Migrationsverket kicked me out of Sweden

  • I hope to be back within a year. 💛
After a frustrating 16 months, my visa application was rejected by Migrationsverket. Ultimately, I had to leave Sweden. I flew back to the USA last week, and now I'm applying for a new visa which is estimated to take between 9-13 months to process. This whole situation has been exhausting and devastating for me. I've spent many years planning my journey to Sweden, and after living in Örebro for over two years, I was forced to leave. :(
I wish this video were more entertaining, but I thought it was important to explain why I'm not in Sweden anymore lol. In the meantime, I'll be making lots of fun videos from Minnesota! Minnesota has lots of Swedish and Scandinavian roots, so it will be fun to show you guys where many Swedes settled back in the day.
If there are specific videos you'd like to see from the States, let me know! Also, I love interacting with you guys on Instagram: reaganlouis

    Thank you for watching!

I’m very sorry to hear about your experience. As someone in a similar position, I can’t even imagine not being able to continue my life in Sweden and the comment ‘just go home’ is so mind boggling being that we’ve spent years of our lives building a life in this country. Sweden is losing a true star! But I know with your positive energy and persistence you’ll find a way to get the end result you want, despite this set back!

This is endemic to the Swedish migration policy. For years many foreign professionals have had to leave Sweden because of not getting permanent residency. A good topic to get into and shine a light on for expats living in Sweden. Svenskt Näringsliv (Confederation of Swedish Enterprise) has raised this issue for years because it harms Swedish industry. Sadly the center-left government does not seem to address this problem.

First of all I'm sorry that this happened to you, but I have a couple of points that I would like to go through:
    1. The visa to search for a job after studies is a visa for 12 months and it is not extendable. Between your appeals and decisions you've been given 16 months, so even if you got your visa approved the first time, you got an extra 4 months to search for a job (visa validity starts from the moment you apply retroactively).
    2. It is a requirement for the visa after studies that you have enough money to support yourself for 12 months At the moment of application submission. Meaning that you should have the total amount BEFORE you apply, even if you're making freelance and you could support yourself every month. they won't follow your case every month, they just need to know if you can live for 12 months (tax free btw, which is a luxury in Sweden).
    3. During those 16 months of appeals, you had more than the 12 months the visa would have given you, so did you use the time for looking for a job? And if you did and didn't find one, why would they give you more time? (on top of the 4 months for free) you can still apply for jobs from outside of Sweden.
I'm an expat living in Sweden and I've also had to deal with all the Swedish burocracy, and I really don't see where you "lost" in this situation. If anything, you got 4 extra months than the rest of us.
I wish you Good luck applying for jobs cause once you get a contract with a Swedish company, everything becomes 100 times easier visa-wise. Hope you can return to Sweden soon.

I believe Migrationsverket is after Försäkringskassan the most hated agency. As a swede I've had to interact with Migrationsverket because of my partner, and it was a horrible experience. Migrationsverket is set up in way that it's almost meant to keep people away, not aiding people in the migration process. It's primarily a bureaucratic control function where hope goes to die, and it's a cause for celebration when you don't have to deal with it anymore.

    • @DNA350ppm
      @DNA350ppm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Migrationsverket is explicitely there to keep people away from Sweden. It is nothing "almost" - Sweden does not want immigrants at all. Sweden has actually stopped all immigration, and only a few exceptions are allowed. Migrationsverket is established to keep control, that any person has a legal right as an exception to come to Sweden, and in what capacity and for how long. The exceptions are very strictly limited. It is not like the USA, with its Green Card system. See above for my longer reply to this video .
I feel very sorry for these facts, which on the top of it are hidden behind a nice facade, and make people so disappointed, and indeed, deceived.

@@MeaganAfterDark Of course it is so, FK offends almost every Swede at some point.
But native Swedes have seldom anything to do directly with Migrationsverket and so some well-meaning Swedes just vicariously hate this agnecy for not quickly and reliably helping those non-Swedes who are most in need.
But Swedes with a huge and warm heart are not so many, when you check them closely. Swedes with a checkbook where their hearts should be are so many more.
BTW average Swedes don't know exactly which authorities are responsible for what - and don't even know the difference between EU-migrants, expats, immigrants, and refugees. And which rules and rights apply to each of these groups. It is a political mess, where the large parties are afraid to lose votes to the populist party for underprivileged angry white men, to the right of the right-wing party.

I think one could easily argue some EU member states’ immigration laws are in some instances quite generous compared to US ones. When my parent lost their job in the US, they had a month to get another qualifying job and it didn’t matter they had lived there for 5 years. There was no 8-month period waiting for an decision on an appeal. Given the fact that nowadays there are actual lotteries for visas in the US (H1B) I can’t imagine things are any easier than they were 20 years ago.

This was a huge problem with banks and loans after the big wave of deregulations in the 90's and a transition to more gig economy jobs in the larger cities. Lots of primarily, but not only, young people who had regular but variable income could not get loans for things like apartments and cars because the banks' systems were set up for almost everyone having a set job and a largely fixed income.
It took about 10-15 years for the banks to adjust their systems, ince they realized they were actually loosing money rather than preventing risk cases from taking loans.
It seems Migrationsverket operate on that same old principle of a set job with a fixed income, but unlike the banks they don't have any (or at least less) incentive to adjust for gig economy jobs/jobs that provide a regular but variable income.
      Which sucks for everyone really.

As a Swede, I apologize for Migrationsverket - it’s an embarrassment to Sweden as a country.
The only way you can get through to the Migrationsverket’s phone line is calling the second the lines opens in the morning. Literally the second it opens. If you call at 08:59 it’ll tell you they are not open, but if you call at 09:01, it’ll hang up on you right away.
The people working at migrationsverket are not evil, they’ve just lost hope and given up trying. The system is flawed and there is nothing they can do to help you. They would be breaking the law if they did. I’ve seen people get kicked out because of technicalities like “not taking your legal minimum of 25 vacation days in a year when you are in Sweden on a work visa”. I guess we don’t like hard working people around here 🙄 I get that in the end they are trying to protect the individual, like in the case above by making sure that people get the vacation they have the right to etc and not taken advantage of, but I would want to see employers being punished, not an employee new to the country.
    Anyways, rant over….
I hope it all works out well, and fast :) (p.s. applying for work visa might be quicker to get than a sambo visa.)

Don’t understand the issue here. You applied for “after study” visa in May 2020. Hence, I assume you have finalized your MSc studies almost 1,5 years ago. You still have not been able to get an stable, recurrent income related to those studies (which was paid by Sweden, right?). Hence, the authorities does not see that your are able to provide yourself financially? Is that correct, that you don’t have an employee contract 1+ year after finalizing your education? The I fully understand why a visa application is denied.
Regarding financial stability however, I fully agree that authorities have a hard time understanding the working environment of 2020s - with gig economies and short term contracts.

Having said that, I am shocked that she was asked to show income for a search year visa. I was under a similar visa in another EU country and that was not a requirement. Hi bearan, just out of curiosity, when you sent in the application, was it for uppehållstinnstånd? Because that is different from a visa. If the applicant has a Swedish partner, then it will be much easier to get a temporary uppehållstillstånd for 2 years and then upgrade to a permanent one. If you are married, it takes about 2 weeks to get a permanent uppehållstillstånd - I have friends from SFI who went through this exact process (they come from non-EU countries). My guess is that the application was not correctly filled in and it gets put low down the queue since they get so many applications that might be more urgent.

That's Sweden in a nutshell. You can't get a job cause you don't have a car. You can't get a car cause you can't get a job.

It's fun to complain about Sweden and all (/s), but that's an Everywhere thing. US and Australia: You can't get a job without experience, and you won't get any experience without a job. It doesn't always make sense, it's frustrating as h*ll when you are stuck in that no-win loop. But those systems exist all throughout at the very least the western world.

I'm a Swede and this pisses me of big time that you have to leave, We have taken care of so many ungreatefull people over the years. People that collect economically support for 10+ years with out working or trying to find a job. People who misbehave, steal, rape and basically go riot with car burnings. Sometimes it feel like a civil war is going on in Sweden when you count the ammount of shootings and granade explotions per year.
And alot of these people can stay. The govuernet do absolutly nothing about it. But the good peopel like you Meagan are forced to leave. I just don't get it. I really don't.

The idea of socialist governments like in Sweden and France is to help the people with the most difficulties, so if you have aids and you can't read, they will keep you because you can't survive by yourself, but if you're someone successful they'll kick you out because you don't need help

I’m interested in knowing what the income requirement is, if you knew about it couldn’t you have applied for jobs on the side for the time being? I’m sure there could’ve been a way to figure things out.
I did the same journey as you, but the opposite. I’m leaving the Midwest for Sweden on Saturday, on my own terms though

Swedish bureaucracy is nothing compared to American bureaucracy. I was married to an American and it still took over 18 months to apply for a Green card. Numerous meetings, papers, stamps, new meetings with psychologist, papers from the police records, HIV and syfilis tests as well as x-ray photos of my lungs. And then, finally in the Us (after two yesrs), numerous interviews and more stamps and papers.

So sorry for you! I know exactly how you feel. Me and my partner had a lot of problems with the Swedish migration agency. It’s impossible to call it will never go through, and for us they never actually answered the questions we asked on email they just sent us the same standard answer every time. My partner also got rejected for the same reason as you. He had a lot of money but they said he could not prove the money was his even tho it was on this account. 😅
He had to leave and reapply for a student visa as he was currently studying in Sweden. After that we applied for a cohabiting visa and had to wait just over 3,5 years for a decision. Thankfully it was approved and he now has a permanent visa in Sweden. I do not wish what we went through on anyone. I hope you will have the opportunity to come back to Sweden soon.

Not helpful right now, but atleast imagine what an amazing story this will turn out after it's all sorted out. "I baked some bread" vs "I was going to bake some bread, but then the oven somehow exploded and..." ;) You're still on your journey, just had to take a different path to where you needed to go. It's always happening to me and it always, always made it way more memorable and interesting in the end lol.

    On our Swedish news today.
’(Adel Darwish came to Sweden in 2015 and has since both trained and supported himself as an actor, among other things, he has been nominated for a golden beetle for his lead role in the film "Ghabe" and is currently filming a series for SVT.
Despite this, the Swedish Migration Agency considers that he lacks a stable livelihood and has therefore denied him a permanent residence permit.
"They said it was missing a month. It was an absurd situation. What, I can not support myself because it is missing a month? " says Adel Darwish.)’

This is something I am terrified about, I need to reapply/apply for my PR next year. I had my work visa reapplication messed up last year and I’m so worried I won’t able to apply for PR. I can’t imagine, I’ve been here five years - my husband is here, my home is here, my job is here - I can’t imagine being rejected. Ugh it is so annoying how every single person you speak to is different or has a different answer for you
