One thing I would like to hear more from you about is how you check the bearings / bushes / linkages once they are cleaned. I for one would like to see you talk us through what you look for, how you decide when they need replacing and what it is you look for while doing it. Since you are doing the back end of the bike then hearing about how you asses whether the chain/sprockets need changing, how you set the chain adjustment for off road use and even what to check on the tyres (damage / wear / dry rot on old tyres etc) would be most appreciated. I appreciate you have already done a lot of this already, but if you are doing it on anther bike or even plan this for next year then it is the type of content many of us would love to see to help us with our own techniques.

Last year I serviced the rear linkage on my XR650L and once I was finished and cleaning up I found 2 needle bearings after they fell out of the cleaning rag I had been using. Well...the job took a little less time pulling everything apart figuring out which bearing they came out of. I won't make that mistake again.

Thank you! I do mine once a year while I’m not riding during winter months. Also depends on how much water and mud you ride in. I’ve stuck to that formula on my 98 XR400 since ‘99 and have never had to replace bushings or bearings to this day. I’ve had this 650R for a few years now and do the same.

So, I used honda mounting paste on mine as recomended by honda as its extreme pressure MoS2 content is so high it’s nearly a solid coming out of the tube. At first I just used the rally MoS2 CV joint grease I had at home for my integrale, but I changed my mind and thought honda probably knows what they are talking about and the MoS2 content in the paste was like 3 times that of the silvery gray CV joint grease. So I took the grease out again and picked up a tube, but I think the thinner CV joint stuff probably would have sufficed. It’s many years ago now so I’m not sure where I read it but I’m fairly sure it was the Honda workshop manual. Just a heads up for people using simple old greasy stuff, it might not be up for the task.

Dang…good thing that it’s really not so bad taking the linkage apart. When you do it enough it’s a quick job.

No I only removed the pivot bolt. That notched tool isn’t required for just the bolt and nut.

Thanks! That’s a harbor freight motorcycle lift. I just had to put a block of wood in the center cause it’s a bit wide for a dirt bike.

Just using a water proof auto/marine grade grease. Been working great for me
