@@jayzzz1234bear in mind that the quad RF signals can be detected anyway. If no RID signal is coming from the same location that might encourage some official busybody to investigate. Probably not, let's hope not anyway, but it's possible.
So you can get frustrated, give up the hobby (or only fly within a designated FRIA), so that commercial drones are free to fly in the airspace you used to fly in.
The best less intrusive way to add these remote ID modules to a home-built drone is by having it power up by the Lipo balance charging connector and transmit a beacon or having it transmit back to your smart phone app via wi-fi or Bluetooth for GPS (might not work well for long range though). I may just use a remote ID with GPS sit next to me powered up with its own battery while my drone is in the air just to comply with Remote ID, like Bardwell said on a few videos back, its not like there are FAA officers patrolling the areas scanning for Remote ID compliance on the actual drone.
I feel inclined to point out that FAA active policing has never been the concern. The real concern is that "if" an incident were to occur, then the drone could be confiscated as evidence and the compliance factors would all be tallied up for fines. Having a compliant RID module is one less thing to hit your wallet on top of the misconduct. Same with SMART, FCC reg, etc.
This is 2.7cc in volume without integrated GPS. The Dronetag BS is 1.2cc in volume WITH integrated GPS. But it requires two small antennas, that take no space at all.
One can sugarcoat it all one wants, but that doesn't change the fact it is outrageous government overreach. Not cheap, either. However the US RID rules are positively friendly compared to what the CAA are proposing here in the UK, which is (a) no weight limit, applies to everything, below 250g as well, in theory down to whoop if outdoors, (b) networked from the word go apart from defined limited exceptions where there is no coverage, and (c) actively connected, ie can stop takeoff.
Jb thanks for keeping people informed. But for me nope, not doing. not doing it if it were free. And by the way it is...every radio/rx sends and receives a code to talk to each other and ignore everything else. That's my RID

I can get lat/long readout and arrow pointing towards the homepoint, but I’m suspecting my updates are no where near the 10Hz I’ve configured because when I attempt gps rescues with it, it’s very jerky like the updates are too slow.
I want one of these that I can plug into a solid lead that I can’t easy bend the pins. If I crash a quad and switch it out easy swap not easy to bend the tiny flight controller pins. If they were 20-25$ I would just buy 5 one for each quad. But at 75$ with tax it’s not feasible for me. Still think they should subsidize them down for 1 year so they are like 5$ if you become compliant.
Oh dude. powered up with props on and your face right next to it. I was talking with the developer about how this works, and I was a little disappointed the the MSP connection didnt also give the SCA/SDL connection. but no big deal. I was hoping for a real quick inav solution if there was no compass pads. not a show stopper. but it does mean that my portable RID will not be able to deliver compass info unless I make a universal plug(s)
So you need to have ID to fly a drone? In NZ you have restricted air space and even then can apply on an app to contact relevant agencies to gain permission to enter the air space. You can even get a drone license. Overly regulated in the US?
Since you cut the supplied cable in half, are you sure that the cable wasn't already swapping the RX and TX pins so it will work properly as if you hadn't cut it?
It's great that this module is an option for those that want, or need to comply. However I feel that paying $69 for an esp32 and a couple of bits is way over priced. Also the basic code to program such a module is available in the public domain. The price should be under $20.00, and still the developer will be making a reasonable margin.
The problem with this argument (as I keep having to say every time this comes up) is that in order to be a legal RemoteID device, you have to jump through a bunch of regulatory hoops. That is what makes them expensive, not the BOM cost. You can build this EXACT device for $20 and it will not be a legal RemoteID device because you did not get it tested to verify that it complies with the ASTM standard for RemoteID devices; you did not submit it to the FAA for approval; you are not doing a zillion other bureaucratic bullshit tasks that are required. All of these tasks cost money and take time, and that is why nobody is selling a RemoteID device for $20.
Yes , I agree, initial administration can be expensive, though it's cost is just a factor in determining the price of how many of the items you think you will sell. In this case, perhaps not a lot. It is good that it is so small and light weight.
I have a couple of tiny remote ID modules. I use one for my drones. But when they went on sale for about $35 I started using one on our cat when we take him outside. Is this wrong?
I can see the argument about it around airports or above a certain AGL. I also fly people carrier aircraft and if I hit a drone during final I'd want to know who to talk to. With that aside it doesn't feel necessary. This notion goes back to the early 00's when people were building giant Octocopters and the modules would loose signal and keep going up. Remember all of those videos of inbound traffic traffic for JFK as seen from above?
If you fly FPV without a spotter, you are not in compliance with FAA regulations. That's the one rule I see everyone violate on a consistent basis. @JB, Are you going to use this module on your Pixhawk build? I am upgrading my hexacopter with Pixhawk Cube (gutting out all DJI NAZA-M stuff), and looking for a simple to integrate RI for commercial use.
I use the Dronetag BS. It works well, is very small. Adds GPS to the FC if wanted. The square grey antenna is so old, and has not changed for years, let's quit buying them. Cell phones have latest tech, and are integrated. It does require a small tuned pruned antenna lead about 3in long. It is interchangeable to the quad you are flying. Gets lock within a min, and faster with the BT app when connected. It is wise to put a small ferrite on the leads to the FC and place the GPS ant opposite of the TXV ant on any build.
I was wondering when someone would figure out they could use the GPS already on these drones. Now all that has to be figured out is how to tap this device into older DJI drones, like Phantom 4 and DJI mini's that don't come with remote ID.
So on the other RID modules with GPS modules can you not pass those GPS signals through? I only have 1 gps equipped bird and 7 others to add RID to. (Commercial)
I bought the flite test one for a 100$ , designed a 3d printed box that holds it and the battery, but the app always crashes and when it does stay on after 100ft no connection, so i just strap it to my pet pigeon and let him play while i fly...😂😂 ...joking...but mine really doesn't work good
Nope, not paying $75 for that since it doesn't come with a GPS module. For $100, the Spektrum Sky is self-contained and will send GPS data back to my Spektrum transmitter. I bought mine for $70 when they were on sale.
You mention you have to be on BetaFlight 4.5 becsause the MSP on 4.4 is bugged. What about earlier BetaFlight Versions like 4.2.11? Wouild those work with Phoenix mRID?
Looking for any STL files for mounting one of these if anyone has a model. I've got a couple variations of drones - some TBS Source One V5, Mario 5 Deadcat. I could modify model to work with the unit on one of these frames.

Gps will not work i ran into this issue with the flite test team and they have not got it working yet. The satellite info must be shown or it will not work. I have reached out to the devs and nothing has changed. I had this issue in January/feb on bf 4.5zulu anf brought it to their attention and flite tests attention and no one has gotten working. Both that device and flite test ezid will not return to home. I have tested it extensively and even though it will show a homepoint it will not go home. The drone will act lost and keep going in circles.
@@JoshuaBardwell i know its not fixed because your system is not showing any satellite info. Test it go fly a drone and put it into return to home. Hi interested in this topic as I am ex military and am looking at getting into drones as I am unable to work. This to me seems odd, is there a fee that you will incur in future in order to fly? Let’s say I was a tattoo artist, I was good at tattooing good at art but all of a sudden to do something I was passionate about to now require a full blown license with annual registration fees in order to conduct “Art”. What’s different about a drone is it not art? Yet the government feels it should not be free. This is why I don’t think it’s necassary, and I also think the government is scared and rather than embrace and teach and jump ahead of the world. We sit like men from the 1950’s in council who are scared of change and try to police a situation that then hinders evolution of technology within your own country. Wait was I talking about real estate?????? Sorry same government. I think personally it’s a sign of weakness within our leadership.
Here's a thought. Power the Remote ID with a controllable output. So when a switch on your controller is flipped one way its powered and when flipped the other way its not. Then when flying leave that switch off unless you see Mr.FAA walking your way. FLIP. Hello sir my name is MR.Lawabidingcitizen.
I love how useless RID is when actually implemented and used. No requirements on range (in even ideal scenarios). No requirements on tx power. No requirement to range test on the ground. It's like they designed it to be an absolute failure from the get-go. Might as well put a small fishing weight in a piece of plastic on your uav and call it RID and just tell the authorities someone sold it to you and said it was one of the ones on the list of certified RID modules. It's pretty much just as good as the real ones.
The ASTM standard does define requirements for detectable range. However, the user is not require to verify that the range is actually achieved in real life. In other words, it seems to me that it would be perfectly legal to wrap the module in tin foil.
Hi JB, thanks for the video. It seems I may be in a very small minority planning to comply, and I was waiting for an option that could use an existing GPS. I did want to remind everyone that you can only have two MSP connections to the FC (besides the USB port). I ran into this with the Flite Test unit and a SpeedyBee FC with Bluetooth, which uses MSP. I had to disable MSP on the Bluetooth UART so I could use the FliteTest unit in addition to digital video. Also, with the FT unit I do see numbers of satellites in the OSD. But I had to upgrade BF and turn off baro to get it to work.
At the end of the day there are not accuracy requirements for the GPS, so why doesn't someone build an insanely small GPS that's only accurate to within like 5-12 meters to put on one of these? Ill start caring about RID when it actually does anything to integrate aircraft into the national airspace and not just act as fear-mongering justification.
@@JoshuaBardwelldid you ever get your OSD to display the number of satellites? In the BF configurator app I see 18 but on my OSD satellite symbol I have NC next to it. My drone says it’s locked but I don’t know how many sats though the OSD sadly

I was wondering when someone would figure out they could use the GPS already on these drones. Now all that has to be figured out is how to tap this device into older DJI drones, like Phantom 4 and DJI mini's that don't come with remote ID.
You can run it in standalone mode with an m10 GPS and a 1s battery
So on the other RID modules with GPS modules can you not pass those GPS signals through?
I only have 1 gps equipped bird and 7 others to add RID to. (Commercial)
the flight test ez and one of the drone tag units also have gps pass though.
@@ShermanKenB Cool thanks
Wow! Love you jb
Mine is integrated in my GPS...sure it is.
It's already built into all drones, you don't have to do anything. At least that's what Someone I Met said to me, and why shouldn't I believe them?
I bought the flite test one for a 100$ , designed a 3d printed box that holds it and the battery, but the app always crashes and when it does stay on after 100ft no connection, so i just strap it to my pet pigeon and let him play while i fly...😂😂 ...joking...but mine really doesn't work good
That's what she said lol.... that title had it written all over it😜
Nope, not paying $75 for that since it doesn't come with a GPS module.
Just to follow up on this. There is a bug in BF4.5 and earlier that makes GPS Rescue not perform that well using MSP. It will be fixed in 4.6
@@johnraahauge4552 looks like 4.5 has a GPS rescue bug too. looks fixed in BF 4.6.0-Dev
@@cbrrunner3656 it’s fixed in 4.5.1 Dev as well. I submitted the PR/Fix that fixed it.
@@cbrrunner3656 4.5.1 is fixed as well.
@@cbrrunner3656 yes, 4.5.1 Dev has the fix as well. I submitted a pull request with a fix.
Can this one be configured to not be detectable by the consumer scanner apps?
Not yet
Looking for any STL files for mounting one of these if anyone has a model. I've got a couple variations of drones - some TBS Source One V5, Mario 5 Deadcat. I could modify model to work with the unit on one of these frames.
I don't care how small it is. I don't care how light it is. I'm not putting it on my equipment. It endangers my safety and the safety of my equipment. I will not comply.
I like the way you think. No RID on any of my drones. Ever.
This has been fixed in 4.5 RC2. Try it.
@@JoshuaBardwell i know its not fixed because your system is not showing any satellite info. Test it go fly a drone and put it into return to home. It will not work i have swapped 2 different EZIds both same issue. No one can show any proof that the drone will fly home. They said the same thing as you, see it shows yellow gps. But the problem is its not enough info through msp. When you arm the quad the home arrow will be wrong as soon as you take off but it will show you how many feet away from home you are.
@@BuddsSkyCam This unit transmits gps data to the flight controller at 10hz. I have one on an INAV build and position hold works very well.
@@ShermanKenB i know Inav and betaflight have different gps processes, in your Inav configuration tool do each of the gps sats show up and show their status?
@@BuddsSkyCam the different constellation associated with the satellite doesn't display in either configurator and the constellation is not used to navigate or for gps rescue.
one question.... whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy is micro usb ....
75$ ill wait.....maybe.....
if the price drops to maybe 20$
It's been a while since rc stuff has become cheaper, though...
Agreed. When it gets the size and price of the new m10 gps modules, with the gps built in, I'll consider it.
@kurtzFPV still won't consider it. Fuck the govt overreach. I'll spend the $ on possible fines. Like saving for speeding tickets.
just like my little nuts - too small to see...but I found them and have the video to prove it...called where are my little nutz(aka prop nutz)....thanks JB for keeping this fresh...sorry again about before..going insane in the membrane is no joke.
Thanks for all the info, Joshua! 😊
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
4.5.1 fixes the bug with GPS Rescue over MSP.
My frame is 21mm height. So far, ft EZ ID Remote ID and Phoenix mRID with not fit on my frame. Only Dronetag BS. The problem with Dronetag BS is...It's not 20x20 mounts and the seller live far. I have no space on my favorite frame. Phoenix mRID! ADD GPS build in and 20x20 mounts on your PCB.
Why not inject a chip in every Fpv pilot so they can monitor all their moves. And this in 'the land of the free' 😂
the smallest RID module is the one i refuse to put on my drone.
never.
$70 and no usb-c? Tragic.
What is Remote ID ? 😂
I sent this to the forum within Australian government on the topic at hand
Here's a thought. Power the Remote ID with a controllable output. So when a switch on your controller is flipped one way its powered and when flipped the other way its not. Then when flying leave that switch off unless you see Mr.FAA walking your way. FLIP. Hello sir my name is MR.Lawabidingcitizen.
Odds of installing are also remote.
annnndddd flight test still beats the majority of these RIDs with the full package and power up from lipo
If the only way I'm gonna not know it's, there is if it's not working.
Mines so small I need a magnifying glass and tweezers
The flight test was never the smallest RID at any point in RID history.
Does this work with M8 GPS modules? On the website it only lists M10. Maybe a good time to upgrade my GPS unit too?
It says it only works with M10 not M8.
@@JoshuaBardwell Also works with M9 turns out :)
@@JoshuaBardwell good to know. lol thanks for the idea.
I plan on quitting FPV flying over 250grams next month. Except in a FRIA of course. I would never violate federal laws. Never.
No complying
Remote ID can buck my salls! 😇
Mine has horrible accuracy it's nonexistent 😂
Cool but i'm never using one 😉😉
So it doesn't even have a GPS module. WHY IS IT $70?!
Because government red tape is expensive to comply with.
@@JoshuaBardwelldid you ever get your OSD to display the number of satellites? In the BF configurator app I see 18 but on my OSD satellite symbol I have NC next to it. My drone says it’s locked but I don’t know how many sats though the OSD sadly
Fuck this noise, one of my builds doesn’t have a gps and I’m considering removing the one off my other build. Ridiculous
Kind of sad no iNav... but what you gonna do!
RID module on my drone, wrapped in tin foil 🧐🧐
So tiny. I believe I have them on all of my drones. You just won’t see them….Ever!
Can we tune angle mode
Pids and reducing filters
Does it make any change in flight
I'm fed up with this bs, I'm out. Hobbies are supposed to be enjoyable and help you relax
My remote Id is so tiny I never even know it’s there.
Never trust color coding on the wires 😜
Cool device, but I still think the FAA should be paying for them.
Haha $70 for that thing!? Pure insanity!
Such a shame what the government has done to this hobby, no wonder Botgrinder only flies his tinywhoops inconspicuously anymore. This hobby will only get more strict the more you comply. It was a fun run. Commercial use is one thing, but hobbyists is complete overreach.
Lint brush my man, you need one... I still love your content 😆
Lost my drones in a boating accident. Along with the guns I no longer have.
The one I use is even smaller - weighs zero grams and doesn't even mount to the drone
I guess i wont fly comercially again. Fuck this. I wont comply.
