You forgot one kind of trolling, thoses who troll to make a point (could be about "fanatics" for example, or people totally fixated on one point of view)
The way i've always experienced trolls, the defninition is close to just getting a rise out of people. For instance taking a unpopular stance that you don't believe in the slightest, then loudly proclaiming such where you are almost certain to get many responses is a form of trolling. Sometimes a person making only one, or two comments set's off a huge argument even long after they've stopped commenting. Generally speaking i feel like people way overthink the whole trolling thing. It used to be common sense on the internet to NOT feed the trolls. Attention is what they want, if they don't get it they will go elsewhere. I suppose i've always had a issue with online bullying, outside of very specific cases (like creating new accounts to harass someone after they've blocked you) it's easily preventable. It's one of the aspects of the net I like best. If i don't want to talk to someone, i don't have to, and they can't even make me hear them if i wish otherwise. When you decouple people from consequences it's always going to bring out the bad in some, but the anonymity of the net has benifet's as well, and imo they outweigh the bad.
You say a good point about one simple post, and how trolls and bullies gang up even though the original poster has not answered. It is funny in a way as they just look ridiculous. I remember contacting a local community group discussing local stuff and when I asked about say a group that the community group had no interest in, they would make fun of me. Say for example you wanted to know about the local Mormon group or road safety group, you would be virtually written off for asking about where that local group is and called names etc, but if you asked about where the local restaurant is then they would not gang up at all. You are kind of bullied into only talking about restaurants in a local community group, rather than other things that happen locally. I remember my post got deleted as my post about asking where something is that is not a restaurant.
Calling people who dissent to something 'trolls' when they aren't actually just being contrarians to annoy people is a form of 'bullying' and its worse because it happens from the top down so there is no burden of proof for them to show that the censorship was necessary.

After years of studying trolls, I finally decided to try it to learn more. It was the only time I've done it and I failed massively. I waited until I was super stressed, created a new character on a mmorpg, got into a channel full of trolls, and gave it a try... got responded to... and cried. I guess not everyone can be turned into a troll. ...Then again, it was a single data point. Perhaps some people need more than others? I don't know. My stress levels were DEFINITELY higher than some difficult math, though.
Perhaps you just share a lot more empathy with others and don't earn pleasure from being rude/trying to irritate others? That's not a bad thing. I would say if you're super stressed instead of trying to become a troll why don't you take a break and do things you enjoy. Treat yo self!

Trolling is definitely an interesting topic to learn about. Most people in forums react wrong to troll attacks and get “trolled”. Thanks for this interesting stuff.

Seen lots of anecdotal evidence of this playing League. Once one person starts flaming in chat, there's a pretty high chance at least one other person retorts back or starts a war.
I've never got a kick out of annoying people, that just seems like a bizzare thing to do to me. I guess people can seek out negative comments and get caught up in the drama of it all though or for some kind of self destruction.
Minor correction, if you look through the sources(second source, datasociety in this case), women and men are targeted pretty much equally, though in the subcategories it is apparent that men are targeted more often with insults, humiliation tactics and physical threats, while women are more often targeted by sexual harassment and false rumors. However it seems to have a greater impact on women. At the same time they seem to be more likely to get help, especially from companies/hotlines, though I couldn't quite tell from the data if men were just much less likely to ask for help from these sources. LGBTQ members are definitely harrased more, which is sadly unsurprising.

Bad moods and angry behavior is catching, but so is being kind. Even in a bad mood if you force yourself to be kind or smile you will notice that you receive more smiles and kindness. It will change your mood, and your mood may help someone else as well.
I went through a phase where I tried trolling out... didn't last long because honest to goodness full-time trolls are a pretty messed up bunch. 4chan and gamingforce forums back in the day. Now I've got better things to do anyway. Had way too much time on my hands as a teenager.
Well, it's important to note that people are not trolls, people engage in the act or lifestyle of trolling. There's also tremendous potential for confirmation bias when looking at trolling - not every comment that looks like a troll is a troll, and since we don't see people's posting history we don't know if this is their typical behavior or if it's a one-off, context specific or otherwise explained.
Hello, I've got a troll bot on my YT chn that follows me and won't leave me alone. When I block him, he just creates a new empty YT account and annoys me again "hi it's me again, hehehe, and I won't leave you alone, hehehe! :D", again, and again! I've blocked already over 100 accounts but he keeps popping up, ridiculing me with his obnoxious comments. I have anxiety disorder and panic, once he writes me again. He stalks me on YT. What can I do?

This makes sense. As far as trolling, I've tried to limit my trolling comments to what I know is true. However, I have found out that there are people who are actually paid to comment in a trolling fashion. And there are times I trolled a perceived troll with this comment: "How much were you paid to troll?" I haven't had one protest, yet, and maybe I alerted a person or 2 to this practice and maybe encouraged them to take trolling with a grain of salt. And maybe I caused a troll or 2 to stop.

As a self proclaimed master troll I can tell you that the best trolling is when the troller trolls without the trollie knowing that they're being trolled. Then the troller has an inside joke he or she can laugh to themselves about guilt free :) But... you can't make it simple, you need to leave a hint that the troller is trolling or has trolled the trollie. That way there's the chance that they'll be discovered, and a greater thrill in the victory of successfully trolling without anyone realizing it.

As long as you include constructive criticism in the positive category, I concur. And even when videos are just there to entertain, you don't have to watch it. Perhaps we should start teaching kids how to improve their own mood, since many don't seem to have that skill (or understand that it's an option). Then we just have the bots, psychopaths, and sadists to deal with.

Some of them believe it's the only way to be cool, or sometimes it might be for self reassurance, maybe they're doing something similar and they are afraid you're better then they are in which case trolling is actually a sign of respect. (People are strange things) I try to take trolls as a complement, cause I'm actually worth their time.

Ok, I get all that. However, I do see such mean spirited comments on some un-deserving story lines, that it makes me wonder if people who partake in trolling behavior aren't making themselves worse with each downvote. Like slowly sealing their own fate. Each time they downvote or attempt to hurt others their commitment to being ugly becomes slightly more ensconced within themselves. Like trolling is actually who they become. So is it something they are unable to control? Is this how they lead their lives away from the computer? Do these people have the power to recover themselves? Is this analogous to the lead pipe syndrome of Roman times? I mean it is pretty pervasive.
You constantly mix up your definition of trolling. You say they are just saying things to get reactions, have fun, get laughs, etc. But then you use examples like "you suck", etc. While I'm sure some of those people who say "you suck" might be trying to get a reaction, a large percent of them are legitimately angry, and not pretending or trying to get reactions. Those people aren't trolls, they are legitimately angry people. They aren't trolls, they are just aholes.
True, but they're not just angry - the fact that they went on a public forum to vent their anger in a crude and hurtful manner that in way that isn't constructive, helpful or conveys what the actual problem is shows that they are not trying to just add their voice to make their opinions heard - they just want to hurt the person that annoyed them. People should be better than this.

What if you just completely disagree or find flaws in the video you are commenting on? What if the video is intentionally misleading? Genuine criticism can sometimes be interpreted as trolling. This is where the line gets fuzzy.

If you look more deeply into what we say in the video, the research around trolling is specifically around certain kinds of online behavior: flaming, gaslighting, insulting people about their physical or cultural characteristics, threatening their safety, etc. It is NOT about respectful criticism of their ideas or disagreement. We agree that it's important to be really specific and accurate about what you call trolling!

Trolling is not synonymous with being mean online. I counter negative comments with positivity. I do this because negative commenters can't handle being opposed, and there lies the fun of winding someone up online.
No one seems to accept the fact that there are people who really disagree, or kids, or just that an opinion puts light through one perspective, so anyone can switch depending on a chaotic chain of factors called life, or catharsis. It's like predicting meteorologic changes, you can't. However, I guess we can find patterns.
During puberty I was corner trapping in COD...🤦♂️ I do believe upholding comment sections in news articles is just against freedom of speech. There should already be cleverly made filters that disrupt hate speech but also allow for a diverse group of comments to be brought up in opposition, support, and moderators for live feeds. Especially today with media outlets knowing more about manipulating humans than we know of ourselves.
The problem with this is that the filters that have been created are often compromised in the name of political and/or financial agendas as well as bias beliefs. The owners always hold the key. Sadly the result of all this will ultimately be an internet without privacy...wait....we're already there. How long until everyone has enough, decides the internet is nothing more than complete shit pretty much and start going back to older ways? The speed at which useful technologies grow is much slower than the rate of which our stressfully complicated lives get more stressful and more taxing. In the end the greed of the tech companies milking the F*** out of their R&D will be what does them in. They ensure the slowest release of good tech by releasing all the shit in between that many consumers can't afford to buy new every year or two. To give you an example I built a gaming PC about a year ago and put about $4-5k into it. I had been out of gaming for awhile and wanted to get back into it. I research everything extensively. It's so much harder to find useful info anymore though but that's besides the point. I built this over a year ago and have one of the best graphics cards IMO (Radeon VII) and this whole time I've had yet to find a good monitor that can match the rest of my hardware. WTF?!?! I just finally ended up going with an LG OLED as the TVs tech is progressing more quickly than the gaming monitors are. How messed up is that? By the time I get a decent monitor my whole setup is obsolete already. Consumer protection needs to step up their game and ban them from releasing shit that doesn't have the other matching tech ready to go. At least maybe it would force them to release matching products instead of consumers playing catch-up 24/7. Think about the pollution too and how long until they run out of natural resources to even make electronics. Long lasting electronics need to become top priority or eventually we'll literally get tossed back into the stone age.

Corporations keep useful guides from easily accessible web pages and usually hidden. There's seems to be a monopoly on most products like phones or consoles. And you can't even replace your phone battery's lol. The presidential choices are limited AF and both in senile age while I know better candidates within my neighborhood. When I encounter a troll, most of the time, all I have to do is to talk to the troll and tell him something like: "OK little troll, o you poor little troll. Go home little troll, since in here, you will no longer be fed." And most of the time, I think they do just that.
There's another type of Trolling that's more aimed at humor than harm: posting an insipid or nonsensical message to try to elicit some sort of response from strangers. Maybe the responder will be open to ridicule (most often for being pedantic) but the intention is mostly to have a bit of fun thru social engineering.

For me, trolling is when you unnecessarily use a nasty or sardonic tone, rather than respectfully disagreeing or even pointing out that someone has contradicted themselves. I remember getting into an argument with someone about a silly comment I made. Ultimately, he/she successfully pointed out the holes in my comment. But their tone was always so nasty it really stuck out as an unpleasant exchange. So now, even when I profusely disagree with someone, I am always respectful and tolerant. If they fail to show me the same, I bail.
TOTALLY AGREE 💯 I commented on a nurses channel like two days ago. Bear in mind, I have no need to lie or even exaggerate. I'm always respectful & sweet. I rarely disagree unless it's a topic I'm extremely passionate about, I know 100% what I'm talking about and they're way out in left field. But I remain nice and respectful. And the comment I made was on topic, logical, added depth to the conversation and I was totally accurate about my facts. I was mainly agreeing. So this other(3rd party) women jumps in & directs her comment to me and I'm not sure if she even understood what I and this nurse were talking about, but she proceeded and I quote, "You seem to be off your meds dear." "Get help." Wt-heck I've read every word I said twice over and can't for the life of me figure out where & what in my comments would lead her to that conclusion. I've worked in the medical field for 46 years and not the physc ward or anything to do with mental health. I was basically agreeing and adding to what the nurse was saying. I could maybe see why the 3rd party who jumped in but saying something off the wall like that??? She's basically calling me crazy and that I need help. Yea that hurt but I always tell myself before I even look at comments that none of these people know me and if their words are unkind they'll be treated like water on a ducks back. I should start writing her name down bcz I've seen those exact words before directed at other people. Maybe she just needs to be reported. She's really not worth the effort. I am a troll and I write insults on the Internet because in real life I am nobody. I have no friends, no hobbies, I don't do well in school. When I get reprimanded, I feel terrible stress. I highly recommend John Scalzi’s essay "your hate mail will be graded “ you can find it in his book of the same name or on his blog “whatever” ( yes he has been blogging long enough to Score that name;) He humorously points out he doesn’t care about troll opinions. He only reads hate mail for entertainment value. Hmmm... What about about a form of positive trolling? In this scenario, there's the instigator/troll/cyberbully and the responder. The instigator starts with the usual tactics such as denouncing, demeaning, vulgar language, and trying to apply shame on the person in any way or form. The responder does not react negatively, but points out the instigator's behavior, offers the instigator to persoanlly message them, asks why the instigator only chooses to talk to/at the responder, and asks why the instigator does not talk with others, but only to the responder? Is positive trolling such a thing that could even exist?
Usually if I want to comment, I try to find something good to say. But sometimes people misread my meaning and think I'm being rude. So, sometimes a comment that looks like a troll, is just a person who isn't getting their meaning across the right way.
It makes sense that it's mainly sadists, I'm not a sadist in person but when I'm playing games like spelunky or COD or something I like trolling people but that's mainly just when I'm games

Trolls come in different shapes and sizes. Some 'trolls' just blurt out a string of upper case rants and cut-and-pastes. Other trolls call people names who disagree. But there are many so-called 'trolls' who are just pointing out something that people don't like to hear or refuse to acknowledge. Often 'troll' is just a term that people like to broadly use for those who disagree with approved messaging. While some trolls might be rude or argumentative, I'll take trolls as a whole any day over liars and censorious types.
I stand with anyone who has ever been bullied by trolls and cyber bullies. Know that you are not alone and that you are loved. Trolls are horrible and can push people to suicide. There should be a law against such devils. It is NOT ACCEPTABLE!
I think anything that gives you an edge in survival will give you some kind of dopamine boost or some enjoyable sensation. The conflict comes when survivalistic behavior turns out to be anti-social (breaks bonds of trust between others) and an "error 404" occurs. The feeling of superiority is a drug in other words. An illusion that you can manufacture and feed off of through anonymity. In tribal times you could imagine trolling to provoke weakness in your enemies. In modern times with the mass connectivity of the world, the only enemy is yourself

The way i've always experienced trolls, the defninition is close to just getting a rise out of people. For instance taking a unpopular stance that you don't believe in the slightest, then loudly proclaiming such where you are almost certain to get many responses is a form of trolling. Sometimes a person making only one, or two comments set's off a huge argument even long after they've stopped commenting.
Generally speaking i feel like people way overthink the whole trolling thing. It used to be common sense on the internet to NOT feed the trolls. Attention is what they want, if they don't get it they will go elsewhere.
I suppose i've always had a issue with online bullying, outside of very specific cases (like creating new accounts to harass someone after they've blocked you) it's easily preventable. It's one of the aspects of the net I like best. If i don't want to talk to someone, i don't have to, and they can't even make me hear them if i wish otherwise. When you decouple people from consequences it's always going to bring out the bad in some, but the anonymity of the net has benifet's as well, and imo they outweigh the bad.
You say a good point about one simple post, and how trolls and bullies gang up even though the original poster has not answered. It is funny in a way as they just look ridiculous. I remember contacting a local community group discussing local stuff and when I asked about say a group that the community group had no interest in, they would make fun of me. Say for example you wanted to know about the local Mormon group or road safety group, you would be virtually written off for asking about where that local group is and called names etc, but if you asked about where the local restaurant is then they would not gang up at all. You are kind of bullied into only talking about restaurants in a local community group, rather than other things that happen locally. I remember my post got deleted as my post about asking where something is that is not a restaurant.
Calling people who dissent to something 'trolls' when they aren't actually just being contrarians to annoy people is a form of 'bullying' and its worse because it happens from the top down so there is no burden of proof for them to show that the censorship was necessary.

After years of studying trolls, I finally decided to try it to learn more. It was the only time I've done it and I failed massively. I waited until I was super stressed, created a new character on a mmorpg, got into a channel full of trolls, and gave it a try... got responded to... and cried.
I guess not everyone can be turned into a troll.
...Then again, it was a single data point. Perhaps some people need more than others? I don't know. My stress levels were DEFINITELY higher than some difficult math, though.
Perhaps you just share a lot more empathy with others and don't earn pleasure from being rude/trying to irritate others? That's not a bad thing. I would say if you're super stressed instead of trying to become a troll why don't you take a break and do things you enjoy. Treat yo self!

Minor correction, if you look through the sources(second source, datasociety in this case), women and men are targeted pretty much equally, though in the subcategories it is apparent that men are targeted more often with insults, humiliation tactics and physical threats, while women are more often targeted by sexual harassment and false rumors.
However it seems to have a greater impact on women. At the same time they seem to be more likely to get help, especially from companies/hotlines, though I couldn't quite tell from the data if men were just much less likely to ask for help from these sources.
LGBTQ members are definitely harrased more, which is sadly unsurprising.

Bad moods and angry behavior is catching, but so is being kind. Even in a bad mood if you force yourself to be kind or smile you will notice that you receive more smiles and kindness. It will change your mood, and your mood may help someone else as well.
I went through a phase where I tried trolling out... didn't last long because honest to goodness full-time trolls are a pretty messed up bunch. 4chan and gamingforce forums back in the day. Now I've got better things to do anyway. Had way too much time on my hands as a teenager.
Well, it's important to note that people are not trolls, people engage in the act or lifestyle of trolling.
There's also tremendous potential for confirmation bias when looking at trolling - not every comment that looks like a troll is a troll, and since we don't see people's posting history we don't know if this is their typical behavior or if it's a one-off, context specific or otherwise explained.
Hello, I've got a troll bot on my YT chn that follows me and won't leave me alone. When I block him, he just creates a new empty YT account and annoys me again "hi it's me again, hehehe, and I won't leave you alone, hehehe! :D", again, and again! I've blocked already over 100 accounts but he keeps popping up, ridiculing me with his obnoxious comments. I have anxiety disorder and panic, once he writes me again. He stalks me on YT. What can I do?

As far as trolling, I've tried to limit my trolling comments to what I know is true. However, I have found out that there are people who are actually paid to comment in a trolling fashion. And there are times I trolled a perceived troll with this comment: "How much were you paid to troll?"
I haven't had one protest, yet, and maybe I alerted a person or 2 to this practice and maybe encouraged them to take trolling with a grain of salt. And maybe I caused a troll or 2 to stop.
I wonder what the "naturally trolly" used as an outlet before internet comments were available. Letters to the editor? Are they just what we used to call "a crank"?

In the past, I trolled people in retaliation for trolling me. Now, I just block or ignore them.

As a self proclaimed master troll I can tell you that the best trolling is when the troller trolls without the trollie knowing that they're being trolled. Then the troller has an inside joke he or she can laugh to themselves about guilt free :)
But... you can't make it simple, you need to leave a hint that the troller is trolling or has trolled the trollie. That way there's the chance that they'll be discovered, and a greater thrill in the victory of successfully trolling without anyone realizing it.

As long as you include constructive criticism in the positive category, I concur. And even when videos are just there to entertain, you don't have to watch it.
Perhaps we should start teaching kids how to improve their own mood, since many don't seem to have that skill (or understand that it's an option). Then we just have the bots, psychopaths, and sadists to deal with.

However, I do see such mean spirited comments on some un-deserving story lines, that it makes me wonder if people who partake in trolling behavior aren't making themselves worse with each downvote. Like slowly sealing their own fate. Each time they downvote or attempt to hurt others their commitment to being ugly becomes slightly more ensconced within themselves. Like trolling is actually who they become. So is it something they are unable to control? Is this how they lead their lives away from the computer? You constantly mix up your definition of trolling. You say they are just saying things to get reactions, have fun, get laughs, etc. But then you use examples like "you suck", etc. While I'm sure some of those people who say "you suck" might be trying to get a reaction, a large percent of them are legitimately angry, and not pretending or trying to get reactions. Those people aren't trolls, they are legitimately angry people. They aren't trolls, they are just aholes.
True, but they're not just angry - the fact that they went on a public forum to vent their anger in a crude and hurtful manner that in way that isn't constructive, helpful or conveys what the actual problem is shows that they are not trying to just add their voice to make their opinions heard - they just want to hurt the person that annoyed them. What if you just completely disagree or find flaws in the video you are commenting on? What if the video is intentionally misleading? Genuine criticism can sometimes be interpreted as trolling. This is where the line gets fuzzy.
Agreed. If you look more deeply into what we say in the video, the research around trolling is specifically around certain kinds of online behavior: flaming, gaslighting, insulting people about their physical or cultural characteristics, threatening their safety, etc. It is NOT about respectful criticism of their ideas or disagreement. We agree that it's important to be really specific and accurate about what you call trolling!

Trolling is not synonymous with being mean online. I counter negative comments with positivity. I do this because negative commenters can't handle being opposed, and there lies the fun of winding someone up online.

I do believe upholding comment sections in news articles is just against freedom of speech. There should already be cleverly made filters that disrupt hate speech but also allow for a diverse group of comments to be brought up in opposition, support, and moderators for live feeds. Especially today with media outlets knowing more about manipulating humans than we know of ourselves.
The problem with this is that the filters that have been created are often compromised in the name of political and/or financial agendas as well as bias beliefs. The owners always hold the key. Sadly the result of all this will ultimately be an internet without privacy...wait....we're already there. How long until everyone has enough, decides the internet is nothing more than complete shit pretty much and start going back to older ways? The speed at which useful technologies grow is much slower than the rate of which our stressfully complicated lives get more stressful and more taxing. In the end the greed of the tech companies milking the F*** out of their R&D will be what does them in. They ensure the slowest release of good tech by releasing all the shit in between that many consumers can't afford to buy new every year or two. To give you an example I built a gaming PC about a year ago and put about $4-5k into it. I had been out of gaming for awhile and wanted to get back into it. I research everything extensively. It's so much harder to find useful info anymore though but that's besides the point. I built this over a year ago and have one of the best graphics cards IMO (Radeon VII) and this whole time I've had yet to find a good monitor that can match the rest of my hardware. WTF?!?! I just finally ended up going with an LG OLED as the TVs tech is progressing more quickly than the gaming monitors are. How messed up is that? By the time I get a decent monitor my whole setup is obsolete already. Consumer protection needs to step up their game and ban them from releasing shit that doesn't have the other matching tech ready to go. At least maybe it would force them to release matching products instead of consumers playing catch-up 24/7. Think about the pollution too and how long until they run out of natural resources to even make electronics. Long lasting electronics need to become top priority or eventually we'll literally get tossed back into the stone age.

Corporations keep useful guides from easily accessible web pages and usually hidden. There's seems to be a monopoly on most products like phones or consoles. When I encounter a troll, most of the time, all I have to do is to talk to the troll and tell him something like: "OK little troll, o you poor little troll. Go home little troll, since in here, you will no longer be fed." And most of the time, I think they do just that.

There's another type of Trolling that's more aimed at humor than harm: posting an insipid or nonsensical message to try to elicit some sort of response from strangers. Maybe the responder will be open to ridicule (most often for being pedantic) but the intention is mostly to have a bit of fun thru social engineering.

Why people thinks every troll has to be mean? I guess i'm a troll but i don't like to hurt people, i'd rather get people to feel good, that's what i enjoy. Making people feel good.
For me, trolling is when you unnecessarily use a nasty or sardonic tone, rather than respectfully disagreeing or even pointing out that someone has contradicted themselves. I remember getting into an argument with someone about a silly comment I made. Ultimately, he/she successfully pointed out the holes in my comment. But their tone was always so nasty it really stuck out as an unpleasant exchange. So now, even when I profusely disagree with someone, I am always respectful and tolerant. If they fail to show me the same, I bail.
TOTALLY AGREE 💯 I commented on a nurses channel like two days ago. Bear in mind, I have no need to lie or even exaggerate. I'm always respectful & sweet. I rarely disagree unless it's a topic I'm extremely passionate about, I know 100% what I'm talking about and they're way out in left field. But I remain nice and respectful. And the comment I made was on topic, logical, added depth to the conversation and I was totally accurate about my facts. I was mainly agreeing. So this other(3rd party) women jumps in & directs her comment to me and I'm not sure if she even understood what I and this nurse were talking about, but she proceeded and I quote, "You seem to be off your meds dear." "Get help." Wt-heck I've read every word I said twice over and can't for the life of me figure out where & what in my comments would lead her to that conclusion. I've worked in the medical field for 46 years and not the physc ward or anything to do with mental health. I was basically agreeing and adding to what the nurse was saying. I could maybe see why the 3rd party who jumped in but saying something off the wall like that??? She's basically calling me crazy and that I need help. Yea that hurt but I always tell myself before I even look at comments that none of these people know me and if their words are unkind they'll be treated like water on a ducks back. I should start writing her name down bcz I've seen those exact words before directed at other people. Maybe she just needs to be reported. She's really not worth the effort. Hmmm... What about about a form of positive trolling? In this scenario, there's the instigator/troll/cyberbully and the responder. The instigator starts with the usual tactics such as denouncing, demeaning, vulgar language, and trying to apply shame on the person in any way or form. The responder does not react negatively, but points out the instigator's behavior, offers the instigator to persoanlly message them, asks why the instigator only chooses to talk to/at the responder, and asks why the instigator does not talk with others, but only to the responder?

Trolls come in different shapes and sizes. Some 'trolls' just blurt out a string of upper case rants and cut-and-pastes. Other trolls call people names who disagree. But there are many so-called 'trolls' who are just pointing out something that people don't like to hear or refuse to acknowledge. Often 'troll' is just a term that people like to broadly use for those who disagree with approved messaging. While some trolls might be rude or argumentative, I'll take trolls as a whole any day over liars and censorious types.
