One thing to watch if reducing your salt consumption is iodine levels. Iodine is rare in the common diet and you really need to watch it. For many, about the only source of iodine is iodised salt. Every day for the past month i've been waking up in the middle of the night. Even when I wake up I feel tired and drowsy. I can't focus. I gotta stop eating out.
The importance of salt long time ago was not because of high consumption. It was because salt was used a lot to preserve foods (no refrigerators!). I once lived in an old house and there was a specially crafted brick container in the basement. People back then used it to stack meat in it between layers of salt. And they rinced the meat before use.
Excess consumption of either is the only 'enemy' there is. You're talking about 150 years ago. What was the average meal composed of? How frequent was the consumption of meat, salted or otherwise? What else did they eat? What was the difference between the well off and poor, diet-wise? What was the activity level? What was the mortality rate? What were the common chronic conditions afflicting these people? So many different factors and variables are present.
@@renge9909 yeah, so basically tge culprit isnt salt its all those other factors. Not enough exercise, sedentary life cycle, to much sugar, not enough potassium etc.
I avoided salt due concern for my kidney. Now being a keto diet, i decided to up my salt to 12grams. i feel wonderful and clearheaded! Guess we on keto need more.
Not enough salt is deadly. I know. I almost lost my father because his doctor put him on a low to no sodium diet. Salt helps keep your body hydrated. Balance is always best.
Same. I went low sodium because of videos like this and got the sickest I'd ever been my entire life. Cramps every say. Now I take between 2500 to sometimes over 5000 and no more cramps and random pains. I'm also an athlete and more salt helps me sweat and have longer endurance.
I went on low sodium 40 years ago. It is the CHANGE that has to be properly managed. It took 4 years to gradually reduce the salt intake. It is impossible to imagine a person not getting sufficient salt per se. But if the kidneys have been used to excreting the excess salt and you suddenly stop then you can easily run to salt deficient. As I said, I don't use salt but even then I look at my foodstuffs and I still reach recommended levels easily without adding any salt to anything ever.
My father died, because of his salt use. It held fluid in his bloodstream and his bloodstream was so waterlogged...the heart could not pump the blood. His heart was starved for nutrients. His weight would fluctuate over 100 pounds. He had to go into the hospital regularly to drain the water. The RDA now is 2200 mg. Fifty years ago it was 400-500 mg. This increase occurred, because the food industries needed to sell more products. Processed foods are overloaded with sodiium and the human body was not designed to eat 2200 mg daily. In truth, human beings were not designed to eat processed foods.
Fifty years ago the RDA for sodium was 400-500 mg. Human beings were not designed to eat processed foods with their excessive amount of sodium. If people ate more unprocessed fruits and vegetables their health would improve.. Americans spend more on medical care and are among the sickest in the world, because of the Standard American Diet.

6) Muscle cramps can be caused by too much salt or too little salt or too little water. It is more to do with the salt to water balance in the muscle. Alcohol can also throw out your salt to water balance.
"incredibly expensive" might be a little much. It's not as if most people could not afford some salt in their food. The thing is that it was a vital commodity back in the days before refrigeration because salting and (and pickling) foods was the main method of preservation, so it was very useful and valuable both in it's direct practical application and as a trade-good. We're still talking about fairly large quantities though. You don't salt a barrel of fish with a few spoonfuls.
Never explained how a craving for junk food means you eating too much salt when really the craving can be explained by salt deficiency. The human body has an amazing ability to self regulate by making you crave salt when you need it and remove it using the kidneys when here’s too much. In study’s men were able to urinate 86 grams of salt in a day
My salted popcorn has a TON of salt in it and I always scratch the salt off the inside of the popcorn packet and I get clumps of salt on my fingers and I eat it, I feel sick now.
Actually salt is good, what Americans are missing is its partner Potassium... In fact several times the illnesses related to salt in the video talk about potassium deficiency. I kept waiting on the pause moment when the guy was like "... Wait hold on is not to much salt is low potassium that is the problem!" didn't happen... Many cultures around the world eat 2-3 the salt Americans do and live longer healthier lives.
Finally someone who knows what they're talking about. 1,500 mg of sodium is FAR FAR too low and can actually cause half of the problems listed on here and even more problems including lower mortality! It's very serious. This time BS will have to take my dislike for misinformation. Sure the rest of the video is on point to what happens when you have too much, but that's almost entirely related to potassium deficiencies. If you're not potassium deficient (which most Americans are) then your optimum threshold is actually somewhere in the upper limits of 4-5k milligrams of sodium which can be an upward of 11 GRAMS OF SALT per day!!
Now that you've done a video on Intermittent fasting... do one on keto. We actually require more salt on this life method, and don't need to fear salt. (sea salts are better)
We use a lot of canned soups and I’ve stopped drinking water as much because we moved and the water tastes horrid. I don’t add salt to any food usually, but I have all these symptoms so I’ll try to watch what my family eats
Never obsessed to salt, but my mom is and trying to make me eat one when I make my breakfast. Salt taste better when you are not obsessed and make a daily life of it. Tasteless or anything, use a pepper for the extra. Or sauce for the better without salt (I use chicken sauce, and it's much better)
Despite barely having any of these signs I know that I am definitely eating too much salt. I can't help it though, especially in summer I am literally craving for salt. Once I even bought the overpriced chips packs at a train station just so I could lick the salt off them. What I found the most baffling aside of not having these symptoms was that beside taking in loads of salt my blood pressure is actually really low.
A few Words inspired by Salt - Salute, salary, salad, sailor, sauce, sausage, sauced, saucer Used to be taken as payment in tuff times. A few sayings “Worth his weight in salt” “salt of the earth” “Take it with a grain of salt” “why rub salt in the wound”...
I have the same issue, recently figured out it's because of something called Dysautonomia (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome specifically). Most doctors don't know much about it, but I suggest you do some research into it and visit a doctor who would be able to diagnose you (or not if you don't have it) properly.
Wow I put salt on my fruits , salad , pizza , veggies even in my milk sometimes . Including cereal . I even add salt the my Fry's at McDonald's this video definitely woke me up
Here's a tenth sign, which I know from experience: If the meal that you have salted to an adequate degree according to your own taste is dubbed inedible by others, you're probably a salt addict.
I have some questions: 1) What are the symptoms for not enough salt? 2) How do Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium, and Calcium interact with each other? 3) How do you know if you have too much or too little of Magnesium, Calcium, or Potassium ?
To answer 1, it's high blood pressure, ironically. It's when your liver stresses out and release hormones to conserve the bits of salt you still have, because to put it quite simply, sodium is required for important body functions. Blood pressure meds typically target to disrupt these hormones. Sodium seems to be wrongly accused, when it should be low potassium. So eat potassium-rich veggies and add salt to taste.
Sodium, potassium, and otger minerals dont interact with eachother that much in the body, they are used in ion transport through the cell membrane to drive cellular processes and energy.
Cook your own meals and replace some of your salt with Potassium Chloride. BUT limiting salt intake to low amounts is not the answer and actually has been shown to INCREASE MORTALITY.
If u guys want to be ouse popular or maybe famous start stalking clorox everywhere he gos your at right your welcome l.i really dont care about fame.so here im giving it to you
My mom takes salt like crazy... and she has all these symptoms am surprised... am trying to minimize it in my diet as well.. thats why i eat fruits and salads to reduce the side effects of salt. And i take suger very less like 3 spoons in 3 days
Salt intake optimum varies a lot depending on how much you sweat from heat or exercise and depending on how much you weigh, also there is other studies that conflict with 1.5 grams per day and sy we need several times more. i dont have knowledge enough to recommend anything, but i do know that the 1.5 gram side is getting a too onesided amount of support, search the internet for information that promotes a higher salt intake and try to get a well balanced picture for you to use
120/80 is an old guideline recommendation and AHA actually recommends 140/90 (2013 ACCA/AHA guidelines). There is no additional benefit of lowering BP of 140/90 mmHg.
If you do buy salt make sure it has iodide in it. It should say right on the front. I just bought some Morton sea salt and a set right on the front label in bold letters it said “this salt does not contain iodide which is an essential nutrient”. So I went back to the store and bought a brand that did in fact had iodide. (Iodized is the same thing). It was still Morton but they offer it with or without.
The worst of all these symptoms for too much salt in diet is urinary incontinence since the body needs to take away the excess salt in the system. Too much salty foods in diet is like poison in the body & body reacts to adjust high sodium level in the system which causes incontinence. Food companies should lower the sodium level in processed & canned food to avoid other symptons that too high sodium levels can be dangerous overall to sodium oveload in dietary balance.
What other sources of iodine are there besides Salt and Seaweed? I'd love for you to make a video about this! Thanks! (Also love your mention of adding different spices for increased flavors! 👍)
In conclusion... tastes good=bad, tastes like paper=good. I work with the elderly (80+) every day. Some are doing great, most are just waiting for the sun to set. Regular pain, more meds than a pharmacy, and are embarrassed they can't move without machine assistance. Seeing it first hand and speaking with them... I have decided to live while I can and accept the consequences.

Salt is also a preservative. After the civil war, the most needed substance in Richmond Va was salt. There was none coming into the city. The residence ended up scooping it up from salt house floors.
My mom is a salt addict - she puts extra salt on nearly everything because she thinks it doesn't taste of anything otherwise. She continues to do this even though she knows it just removes her ability to taste things in more.
I’m only here because every time I get my blood work done my doctor always tells me to consume _more salt_ because my sodium levels are always low. However, my diet has taken a turn for the worse and I’ve been eating cheap, high sodium foods, as of late. I’ve been having daily headaches, fatigue, vision problems, and brain fog. I suspected it was from too much sodium, and this video confirmed it. It’s probably even worse for me since I NEVER cook with salt, add salt to ANY food I eat, _typically_ eat whole foods for _at least_ half of my diet, and have always drank more than the “required” amount of water. As a matter of fact, if I didn’t have animals, I probably wouldn’t even have salt in my house.
Hey once I got a severe diarrhea, my mineral (like potassium) runs low But since I like to eat salty things (and even the salt itself) my natrium level is normal lol
Stop over explaining things, we don't need a 2 minute intro on what the video is about, it's in the title. That's like being forced to watch the trailer of a movie before you watch the movie. If someone needs their hand held that much then that's their problem, stop catering to their stupidity. It's up to them to be able to keep up with the rest of us.
Ok this is exactly what I needed, i got some pink Himalayan salt & have been using it way more often. I have headaches and fatigue like crazy now 😩 super thirsty & bloated from salt and water retention

Once I even bought the overpriced chips packs at a train station just so I could lick the salt off them. What I found the most baffling aside of not having these symptoms was that beside taking in loads of salt my blood pressure is actually really low.
Sounds like adrenal issues maybe low aldosterone, I have the same issue

I have the same issue, recently figured out it's because of something called Dysautonomia (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome specifically). Most doctors don't know much about it, but I suggest you do some research into it and visit a doctor who would be able to diagnose you (or not if you don't have it) properly.
I use salt enough much in my daily meal routine but I don't have any sign of them.
Alhamdolillah.

Wow I put salt on my fruits , salad , pizza , veggies even in my milk sometimes . Including cereal . I even add salt the my Fry's at McDonald's this video definitely woke me up

Here's a tenth sign, which I know from experience: If the meal that you have salted to an adequate degree according to your own taste is dubbed inedible by others, you're probably a salt addict.
thanks a lot for these information..it shows me that i am a person of too much salt eater...now i am thinking to change my food habit...thx again
What about training your taste buds to enjoy food without any thing on it. Food has a variety of tastes that is better than comoflauging the flavor.
Almost everything you said was either a misconception or just wrong.
I have some questions:
1) What are the symptoms for not enough salt?
2) How do Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium, and Calcium interact with each other?
3) How do you know if you have too much or too little of Magnesium, Calcium, or Potassium ?
To answer 1, it's high blood pressure, ironically. It's when your liver stresses out and release hormones to conserve the bits of salt you still have, because to put it quite simply, sodium is required for important body functions. Blood pressure meds typically target to disrupt these hormones. Sodium seems to be wrongly accused, when it should be low potassium. So eat potassium-rich veggies and add salt to taste.
Sodium, potassium, and otger minerals dont interact with eachother that much in the body, they are used in ion transport through the cell membrane to drive cellular processes and energy.
no, ur salty attitude is the biggest sign you're eating too much salt.

@Donald J Trump Why don't you think global warming is real, Mr. Trump?
Cook your own meals and replace some of your salt with Potassium Chloride. BUT limiting salt intake to low amounts is not the answer and actually has been shown to INCREASE MORTALITY.
Thanks for all the info 👍😊👍

“DO YOU LIKE SALT? GIVE THIS VIDEO THUMBS UP IF SO!”
???
Thank you sooo much for your suggestions love you
Less than 1 TSP of salt a day...? Thats bologna....eating too little salt is worse for ur health....
Salt intake optimum varies a lot depending on how much you sweat from heat or exercise and depending on how much you weigh, also there is other studies that conflict with 1.5 grams per day and sy we need several times more. i dont have knowledge enough to recommend anything, but i do know that the 1.5 gram side is getting a too onesided amount of support, search the internet for information that promotes a higher salt intake and try to get a well balanced picture for you to use
thanks for the healthy information...
this channel for me is one of the best.

120/80 is an old guideline recommendation and AHA actually recommends 140/90 (2013 ACCA/AHA guidelines). There is no additional benefit of lowering BP of 140/90 mmHg.
You are plain wrong.
Look at the Sprint trial.

I just love Rold Gold pretzels and go through a couple of bags a week and i don't have any of those symptoms.
Interestingly a lot of these are symptoms of not having enough salt rather than having too much 🤔
Exactly
The worst of all these symptoms for too much salt in diet is urinary incontinence since the body needs to take away the excess salt in the system. Too much salty foods in diet is like poison in the body & body reacts to adjust high sodium level in the system which causes incontinence. Food companies should lower the sodium level in processed & canned food to avoid other symptons that too high sodium levels can be dangerous overall to sodium oveload in dietary balance.
Thx! I learned so much
What other sources of iodine are there besides Salt and Seaweed?
I'd love for you to make a video about this! Thanks!
(Also love your mention of adding different spices for increased flavors! 👍)

If I said "Can you pass me the salt", at my home they would look odd at me... and then ask why i speak english.
You guys are REALLY smart!!!

"Salt can be very dangerous for your health" wait!!! whaaaaat??? There is just another video of Bright Side saying salt is not dangerous for health!!!
"Salt addict"
Aaaand just like that you lost me. (You lost me almost immediately, but this was the nail in the coffin. :D)
My mom is a salt addict - she puts extra salt on nearly everything because she thinks it doesn't taste of anything otherwise. She continues to do this even though she knows it just removes her ability to taste things in more.

Joe Al your so weird
I think I should eat more Salt
it may be not enough potassium, which is needed to balance salt
salt is necessary for adrenal function and producing stomach acid to digest food, low sodium diets interfere with stomach acid production
eating too many carbohydrates, especially from grains (corn, wheat, rice), can lead to water retention as well
I’m only here because every time I get my blood work done my doctor always tells me to consume _more salt_ because my sodium levels are always low.
2 minutes in and Im still waiting for them to get to the point.

To much salt also affects you attention span.

Ikr. Just get to the point of the video!
Hey once I got a severe diarrhea, my mineral (like potassium) runs low
But since I like to eat salty things (and even the salt itself) my natrium level is normal lol
You need a followup: Signs You're Eating Not Enough Much Salt
Ok this is exactly what I needed, i got some pink Himalayan salt & have been using it way more often. I have headaches and fatigue like crazy now 😩 super thirsty & bloated from salt and water retention
