      How he let himself get so fat I never know ! He was round in front like a big beach ball . Not healthy and how could he even see to find his winkie to pee ? And stan was skin and bones ! Sad to see them so out of shape like that. My Aunt used to call them Dick und DIn. Fat & skinny in German. I guess she saw them in Germany when she was living there as a young girl. She married my Uncle and came to the USA. She was the best Aunt I ever had. She brought me a real working toy steam engine for Christmas. I miss her so much. RIP Auntie !

    One thing that made their old movies so great was the music written by Leroy Shield who also wrote the music for Our Gang (Little Rascals). The music in this movie will never be identified with these two great actors.

    L&H were the best comedy team of all time but their best body of work came between 1929 and 1941. so about 12 years. The last truly great show they gave us was 'A chump at Oxford'. After that they were really getting too old and were not being give artistic freedom anyway, plus they were having quite a few health and personal issues in their lives. Stan always regretted working for fox and others after 1941. Ive watched all of their work they did between 29 and 41, many times over, except for Fra Diavolo and Bonnie Scotland (which i havent seen). and i never tire of it. I could not bring myself to watch utopia.

    Stan said in the 1960s how very ill he was durning the filming and how he had to have a nurse on the set .
    It was suppose to be six weeks of filming that turned into six months.They were sorry they made the picture.

    • @torstenscholz6243
      @torstenscholz6243 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Not only six months, the whole thing took about a year to make, and Stan was so ill they even had to pause the shooting for two months to get him hospitalized. Poor Stan and Ollie, the shooting must have been a disaster and the worst experience they had in their life.

    I didn't know about this movie . I knew that Stan and Oliver were sick at the end of their lives but when I saw the beginning of Utopia (sound and picture escaped from the early 40's) , especially Stan Laurel that was a terrible shock for me to the point of stopping the video.
    RIP gentlemen Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy.

      They were sick because they suffered from disastrous shooting conditions - the crew was anything but professional, and the shooting took place in a hot summer in southern France. Stan suffered from diabetes among other things, making him lose weight, and Ollie was struggling with obesity, cardiac fibrillation and flu. It was their worst filming experience ever, and unsurprisingly it remained their last film. In the mid-50s there were plans for a L&H TV show, but they died when Ollie had a stroke and retired from acting.

    Made in the sunset of their careers, this movie was made to satisfy Hal Roach. Stan and Ollie were old and sick during the filming. Oliver died a few years later in very ill health at age 65. Laurel died in 1965 at age 74 . They were obviously not at their best in this film and the writers offered a very poor script; still this comedy duo left us with many happy memories. They were the best.

      Hal Roach was in no way associated to this film; it was made by French producers who tried to cash in on L&H's popularity, which was still very huge in Europe at that time, in order to help rebuild and re-popularize the European film industry after WWII with some recognizable faces. Needless to say the film and its production history were a disaster from day one, and seeing the old, sick L&H suffering through this is rather sad than funny. It was their worst filming experience ever and unsurprisingly remained their last film.

    In the late 1940s, a coalition of French and Italian film companies approached the guys about making a film in Europe. It looked good on paper, since they would be allowed sympathetic working conditions, script approval and other artistic freedoms that made their Hal Roach films so good and was not permitted for their later Fox and MGM films. However, due to the complicated financing, French and Italian actors had to be hired, and none spoke English! So part of the cast would be delivering their lines in French, others answering in Italian, with Stan and Ollie trying to do their dialogue in English, with the non-English actors all poorly dubbed later. The director was inept, and if that wasn't enough, Stan got deathly ill during filming and looks like death warmed over. The film was finally finished in 1951. At least the dialogue fits their characters (unlike the Fox and MGM films where they spout stuff that Stan and Ollie would never say). But the production is so bad, the dubbing horrible, Stan's sickly appearance depressing and Hardy's weight now well over 300 pounds, the whole film is a very sad swan song to the greatest comedy duo in the history of motion pictures.

      I agree. While it's far from being their worst film and still better than their poor 1941-45 Fox and MGM productions, it's rather sad than funny to see these poor chaps obviously being old and sick, which makes it hard to laugh at them. In their best films, they were so funny and adorable because they were grown men behaving like children, Here, they are just sick, old men making a fool of themselves.

    By this stage in their careers Stan and Ollie had little say in their films, Hal Roach tried controlling everything on screen they did which eventually caused the duo to part ways with Roach acrimoniously, unfortunately it only got worse as other studios treated them the same as well. I find this too sad and painful to watch.

    This film is VERY sad to watch. L and H would've NEVER put this movie out if they had more control. Oliver was at his heaviest and Stan looked just plain ill. if u really wanna watch L and H in their prime watch their sound shorts produced by Hal Roach from 1929-1935 . As far as films a good starter kit would be to watch "Sons of the Desert" Other good films were Way Out West, Pack Up Your Troubles, and Block Heads. By this point they were elder statesmen and a younger, zanier, team was takin over they were called Martin & Lewis.

      I agree with you entirely, if this movie had been made ten or fifteen years earlier I would have found it easier to laugh , but Stan was so obviously very ill and Olly wasn't much better. I really couldn't raise a laugh. I loved them and thought they were the best there ever was and I've seen most of their films several times.

    Why is Hal Roach's name presented at the opening? He didn't have anything to do with this production, as far as I know!? What a mess! From the direction, to the production, to the writing, to the health of the stars - a miss on every front. And yet the magical Laurel & Hardy almost make this thing work. Virtually nobody's last film is their best, but these masters deserved so much better! But I am grateful to have a chance to see this doomed film!

    This movie was a disaster. They used the popularity of Laurel and Hardy just to make a picture. Both of them said that they hated it but had to fulfill their contract with the studio.

    • @torstenscholz6243
      @torstenscholz6243 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're not wrong there, but you have to consider the historic circumstances: The film was made in post-WWII 1950s Europe. At that time the European film industry was still recovering from WWII, and L&H were still enormously popular throughout Europe, so they tried to re-popularize European film with two still very popular and recognisable names and faces. While the film of course became a fiasco in the end, you can't really blame the producers for what they were trying to do.
