Yes, I can watch "Ghost Ship" a million times and still breakdown laughing when the Capt. says "foward!!" and then again, "forard ",,,,,and Hardy checks out Laurel's forehead. I'm 49 and laurel and hardy was my childhood!! Never missed one. I've being doing a little research since I watched 'Stan & Ollie' and I'm trying to work out reality from fiction. Can anyone help? Firstly, Hal Roach. The film portrayed the relationship between Stan and Hal as not good. Hal kept them on different expiry dates on their contracts so they couldn't go alone. But...has anybody watched 'this is your life' from when both Stan and ollie where recognised? Hal Roach was a guest and all seemed fine between the three of them. Did they kiss and make up? Also. Bernard Delfont, who managed their last England tour in 1953. The movie paints a greedy promoter taking advantage of these two great men. But he also is with them on 'this is your life'. In fact, he was part of the team who planned the surprise on Stan and Ollie. This was two years (I think) after the tour? I'm just really curious. Also... The film suggests 'way out west' to be their final picture for Hal. Then Stan was fired and Ollie done the elephant movie. But yet, according to wiki, most of their films where shot between 1935-1949. On Stan and ollie, ollie makes reference to him and Stan just getting to know each other again. Wiki suggests they never stopped working together. I'd love to know so please do share any info.
Ah, je comprende et da'accord! And so marvelous to see how beloved and appreciated they still are around the world so many years after they originally created a global sensation. Very special funny gents indeed!
It no doubt was stilted ,because it was primarily a propaganda film ,more work than inspiration. Amazing that Stan and Laurel were able to come through so well.
I believe their health was beginning to fail by this point and perhaps took a tad of their whimsical and creative vitality away but still plenty to love and enjoy here. Glad I saw it. Definitely ones, or two perhaps better said, of a kind.
I agree. This movie gives more screen time to all the other supporting characters that does to Stan and Ollie. All their films after Hal Roach are like that. 20th Century Fox and MGM had no idea about the genius of Laurel and Hardy. It's nice that people like this, though it's far from vintage L&H with just the occasional flash coming through. One such is the parade sequence where Stan sticks Penelope down Ollie's pants (33:30 to 36:10). Ollie's reactions are priceless. And as others have noted the third to sixth of their TCF films were a definite improvement, Mal St Clair actually understood slapstick and allowed them to modify the scripts. Of their 8 40's films though I'd probably rate this 5th (No 1 The Bullfighters, 2 Jitterbuge, close 3rd The Dancing Masters, 4th The Big Noise, 5 GG, 6 Air Raid Wardens 7 Nothing But Trouble & 8 A-Haunting we will go. Saps at Sea (lowest ranked Hal Roach - amusing but obviously rushed to complete their contract.) 19. The Big Noise - lots of cribs from earlier films, which is no bad thing. But the execution is perfunctory , which dampens things a bit. Stan's rendition of Mairzy Doats is funny (and causes a crew member to laugh). 20. Great Guns - aside from everything else - a change in the make up applied to L & H ages them about 10 years) 21. But it then squanders every comic possibility with leaden direction, bad blocking and pacing.) 22. Nothing But Trouble (very thin material-annoying story line, the dinner scene should be the highlight but barely raises a titter.) 23. A-Haunting we will go (the only time I can think of where Stan actually looks unhappy.) Of course one shouldn't forget the real gems which are shorts such as The Music Box, Towed in a Hole, Laughing Gravy, Brats, Helpmates, A Perfect Day, Hog Wild, Their First Mistake, The Music Box, Towed in a Hole, Busy Bodies, Going Bye Bye, Them Thar Hills ("pom-pom") Tit for Tat and another half dozen I can't think of just now - and also some of their silents are also very funny. Heck, there's so much to choose from with these two fellows.
I want to thank you for the information. I’ve been watching them since I’m a kid in the 1950’s. My Dad and I went to the movies to see L&H in a compilation film sometime in the 1960’s. It was all their silent film on the big screen. Do you know the name of that film? I think it was called “L&H in the roaring ‘20’s”? I’m not sure. Thanks again.
They've assigned us a porter! Laughed myself horse. Great humour. Love the long plank of wood gag with Stan in different poses. Great fun, however, agree with previous comments, the earlier films were much stronger, these later one's lacked something of the Hal Roach period.
agree good old comedy back in those days no computers or graphics like they have today movies like these I cherish I still watch them today and swearing agree still made good fashion comedy without using swear words you never will see movies again like this today same as good old fashion rocky and roll back in the 70's those days are done

Thank you Mr. Nobel for posting this, one of two L & H films I 've never caught more than snippets of and one not often anthologized. I enjoyed it immensely in many ways. Stan and Ollie are always a treat to watch nevermind where it ranks among their many masterpieces. They and their rare comic chemistry and timing and characterizations are the masterpiece.
I liked this production also, I also feel that their Hal Roach's short productions were the best but this was also funny. I laugh so much that tears will be pouring down my face. And even when I see the same feature more than once, I still feel like laughing as much as if I was seeing it for the first time. I also prefer them above Charlie Chaplin or Abbot and Costella and others. Their acting is priceless, and especially the expressions Hardy shows on his face over Laurel's antics. Watching Laurel and Hardy seems like pure heaven to me, and however depressed I may feel they still make me to laugh and laugh. I love them both, I used to love them when I was a kid, and I love them now also in my 53rd years.
Hear hear, you have expressed the feelings of millions of their fans. They are without a doubt the best cinematic cure for depression of all time, even in movies like this, which is not one of their best. God bless them both and you too for posting your comment.
The boy was young with a big greddy crew I saw lots of things things by sticks and bushes in the dirt pinned too the house pinned to the pant the boy is young the crew must be able to get it standing and lit so bring it on we're going keep the house thank you
@@sherrychaffin4843 I have the entire DVD set. I've seen em a million times. Even though I know exactly what's going to happen, I still laugh out loud. They were so innocent in a big world for them. All the contributing actors were perfect, like Finlayson. "ohhh, my good eye!" But my all time favorite is Ghost Ship. Where they shanghai guys for the capitan. Best line,,,,after ther captain clears out the crew down below, he tells everyone "forard (without the w, which means go forward on the ship). L&H just stand there and the capt. yells FORARD! and Hardy turns towards Laurel and checks out Laurel's forehead. I'm lol as I write. Same pic, they have to throw the "body" of the drunk overboard and they are talking about whether he will go to heaven or the "other place". Hardy says the other place and tells Laurel to get a lump of coal to put into the sack with the body. Laurel says "you mean if you go the other place you have to take your own coal" . God love em and RIP their souls. Nice talking to you.

51:47 When Ollie pushes Stan's top hat down, when he was wearing it. Then they walk off. I, struggled to breath, I laughed so much. So cartoonish. Response to video only.
This film came out a year after "Saps At Sea," but the 2 films couldn't be any more night and day. Between Fox Studios stifling L&H's creativity and putting heavy makeup on them and making them suddenly look much older, there's a noticeable change in their films going forward.
I don't know if Stan and Olie did these awful movies just as part of the war effort, but sadly every movie I have seen that they did after 1941 were universally unfunny pale shadows of their previous work. From what I gather they had very little control over the content and production which would explain why these movies were so bad, but I'm convinced Stan and Olie must have known they were substandard. Regretfully their downward spiral continued culminating in the truly awful 1950 movie "Utopia" which effectively ruined their career.
How the others kept straight faces whilst laural and Hardy were larking about in the film I don't know. It certainly is. The way ollie stares at the camera afther Stan laurals joke priceless comedy
57:40 I first saw Great Guns when I was eight or nine, but it wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized that the chalk marks Hardy drew on the jeep under the “V” spelled “V” in Morse Code.

Of course one shouldn't forget the real gems which are shorts such as The Music Box, Towed in a Hole, Laughing Gravy, Brats, Helpmates, A Perfect Day, Hog Wild, Their First Mistake, The Music Box, Towed in a Hole, Busy Bodies, Going Bye Bye, Them Thar Hills ("pom-pom") Tit for Tat and another half dozen I can't think of just now - and also some of their silents are also very funny.
You rank The Big Noise quite highly as it usually gets a slating but your list is quite on the mark
They've assigned us a porter! Laughed myself horse. Great humour. Love the long plank of wood gag with Stan in different poses. Great fun, however, agree with previous comments, the earlier films were much stronger, these later one's lacked something of the Hal Roach period.
That long plank gag had previously been used in their silent classic "The Finishing Touch" (1927 or 28)...
agree good old comedy back in those days no computers or graphics like they have today movies like these I cherish I still watch them today and swearing agree still made good fashion comedy without using swear words you never will see movies again like this today same as good old fashion rocky and roll back in the 70's those days are done
Even though the 1940s Laurel & Hardy movies like this one were pretty funny, the movies and shorts from the 20s and 30s were way better.
Oh my lord! What wonderful memories.😂😂😂😂😂😂

The team of all times.😀
Thank you Mr. Nobel for posting this, one of two L & H films I 've never caught more than snippets of and one not often anthologized. I enjoyed it immensely in many ways. Stan and Ollie are always a treat to watch nevermind where it ranks among their many masterpieces. They and their rare comic chemistry and timing and characterizations are the masterpiece.

Fantastic actors !
Hi thank you nice film.
Tks very nice
Muy bueno lo veo para aprender ingles y un poco de teatro jiji 8gual me gusta me trae recuerdos de mis padres 😌💕
The boy was young with a big greddy crew I saw lots of things things by sticks and bushes in the dirt pinned too the house pinned to the pant the boy is young the crew must be able to get it standing and lit so bring it on we're going keep the house thank you
I laughed 70 years ago and I still laugh today!!
Lol Lol Lawdt....Mike Wallace, Right...60 yrs for Me....Still Great Laughter!!
70 years ! wow God bless you sir! I'm 40 and just discovered L & H about 4 months ago and cant get enough!
@@jeremybear573 Watch Ghost Ship, it's one of their best. Also, them thar hills. excellent.

That is the funniest one I have ever seen. It's good to laugh.
Love these slapstick boys
51:47 When Ollie pushes Stan's top hat down, when he was wearing it. Then they walk off. I, struggled to breath, I laughed so much. So cartoonish. Response to video only.
16:10 Wow.... Savage comeback. Especially if you use that today.
This film came out a year after "Saps At Sea," but the 2 films couldn't be any more night and day. Between Fox Studios stifling L&H's creativity and putting heavy makeup on them and making them suddenly look much older, there's a noticeable change in their films going forward.
I can't believe it. Too, too,too great movie.
Just LOVE the Swahili closed-captions.
They will never GROW Old ! ! 😂 😂 😂
Laurel & Hardy are hilarious & I can't eat my snack thru choking because of laughing so much with them!
Walks through the staff area almost entirely unnoticed until one guys gets eyes on it but isn't prone to do a thing about it.
The greatest comedy duo EVER!!!
Might not be the best but, Stan & Ollie are always great!
How the others kept straight faces whilst laural and Hardy were larking about in the film I don't know. It certainly is. The way ollie stares at the camera afther Stan laurals joke priceless comedy
37:31,ALAN LADD on the left one of his many bit parts..the next year 1942 he would be a star with THIS GUN FOR HIRE and ten years later as SHANE 1953
This is actually a great little flick
That I would see this again last time was 1934.
Er, hang on, that's 7 years before it came out. How did you manage that?
I couldn’t figure what that line from Ollie was when the Jeep drives through the bushes and twigs. 58:15
Great movie and Sheila Ryan was a real hotty.
57:40 I first saw Great Guns when I was eight or nine, but it wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized that the chalk marks Hardy drew on the jeep under the “V” spelled “V” in Morse Code.
Wonderful film.
Now these two really know just what there doing I'm sure !!!!!!!!!
Great man both Laurel and hardy
