This is THE BEST guide, tips and walkthrough tutorial for modellers on youtube, hands down. You cant imagine, how this changed my life in painting. I am not a beginner, but I was that guy with thick colors in 1 layer before with strokes visible. This, seeing it step by step and layer after layer how it really builds up, changed my way forever. Very detailed, well visible on camera, good spoken advise during the process. I even learned for the 1st time you can actually use acrylic airbrush colors for brushing :-D Cant wait now until my Airfix Douglas Dakota DC-3 arrives, Ill damn will take my time with this one. For the green paint to not seep through the tape, I suggest painting over the tape seam with grey first. So that the color that seeps through is the same as the base layer. After that, you can go over with green. That way you can have a cleaner line after taking the tape off. These videos are wonderful as I have a few model planes that I want to build but have no idea where to start. I have painted on canvas before so I hope the tape trick helps :)
Also, while using aerosol varnish, PLEASE use proper respiratory gear and spray it either outside or in a well ventilated area. They’re very harmful to inhale.
Your other videos are what got me interested in this hobby, but I didn't consider taking it up until this series. It has inspired me to order my first kit. Thank you very much for these highly educational videos!

I have been putting off doing a REALLY old (1970s?) model I have in my basement since I had no idea where to begin or how to hand paint it, these videos are perfect and I think I might paint it sometime soon.
Great tutorial. I recently have been unable to use my airbrush (been away from home) and had been wondering how I could attempt to hand paint a model kit after awhile. This video made it crystal clear how to go through with the whole process of hand painting a model!
I am returning to the hobby --- basically as a beginner --- and this series of videos is exactly what I was looking for as I don't have an airbrush. Your repeated reminders to use thinned/watery paint for each layer is something I do remember from decades ago but needed to be reminded of. I don't remember using six coats to get the desired result, but, as you also said - whatever it takes (patience!).

Scale Modelling Madness Is it true that masters of masters modelers paint their scales only with oil paints and only by hand? or is it only for painting figures?
Is this Thunderbolt an airfix kit?
I saw the Albatros D V 1:32 scale that won the competition in Germany, and it stands in some German miliary museum. It was painted with oil paints and it looks fantastic. It is so briliantly painted that it looks like its made of wood, not plastic, fuselage and propeler. Its amazing and it shows the force of kraft on it.

Great videos! This was super helpful for me ho just got into modeling! Just one thing i want to ask to you, depending on the coat layearyou always keep the same dilution ratio 1:1 or you change it? I'm asking because it seems to me that the first layer in more watery than the others, or maybe it's just my impression.

hello friend very informative video for a complete beginner like me thanks . it was so helpful that i but bought the same kit (my first one) . i just needed help that which shade of green can i use for the body u used medium green but i dont have it and can i use cold grey instead of neutal grey

One question, how much time do you wait in between applying each coat of paint? I use acrylic and wait about 5 minutes, not sure if that’s right

Firstly - thank you for the tutorial. Getting back into modelling (to get son interested) but to do it better than I did it before. Question ; do you reduce the dilution of the colours for each subsequent layer ? If yes - what are your ratios please ? Thank you once again.
Hey there, thanks for watching the video. There is no particular ratio that I follow, it is more by feel. I aim to go for a thinned down consistency that spreads evenly and most importantly, is thin enough to self level. If the paint is too thick it will retain brush strokes and resist self levelling. Hope that helps :) Good luck with getting back into the hobby, it is a great hobby to share with kids.

Thanks mate. Arriving at ratios is a little difficult as different paint brand has different thickness and also paint tends to thicken with time. So, I usually go by feel...I just want the paint to be runny enough to self level and not take brush strokes. I keep some cheap disposable plastic spoons, on which I experiment before applying paint to the kit. Hope that helps :)

Hello! I just started painting my model kits and in was wondering what paint to thinner ratio have you used for ak interactive acrylic color you used at minute 1:26 in the video? Also have you used regular tap water or their official thinner?
Question: How long do you leave between coats of paint?
Also, what's the best way to paint the aircraft white (e.g. nuclear anti-flash) if the kit plastic is some other colour, particularly black or grey, so that it doesn't show through?
Nice painting!But why you use mr. super clear? Is that the same as gloss varnish?
if I understand you are using MrColor acrylics which are solvent based. How do you thin them down? Is water ok? or do you use any thiner, if so what? and what proportions of diluting? Thank in advance. Your videos are very helpfull for a beguiner.

Thank you Felice. The dilution is reduced a little bit as additional layers are added, but I cannot give you an exact ration as it varies from one paint to another. What I try to concentrate on is that the paint remains thin enough to self level and not hold brush strokes or bubbles :)
I'm going to be trying with humbrol acrylic tonight so will comment back to see how they fair... Did you wash the kit, mayb something from factory stopping it attaching... As I say I'll be testing later (couldn't get revell so went for humbrol comparisons) ill comment and let ya know how I get on...

One trick for stopping paint creep under the masking is to brush on the base coat (the light grey in this case) along the masking line. This will seal the line for the top coats of your darker colours, and if there is creep from that sealing coat, it will match the underlying paint.

Scale Modelling Madness Actually I have been playing with this technique and have a slight variation that has worked well. Instead of sealing the edge of the mask with a colour, try a coat of clear varnish. I used this on a trio of 1/72 Spitfires I have on the workbench at the moment. Worked like a charm... particularly for masking the squadron markings in lieu of decals.

Use spray primer beforehand. Not sure why he didn’t here. It gives the paint something to adhere to.
At 9:10ish you mentioned that masking when hand brushing a model is a double edged sword as you will get the next colour seeping under the edge of the tape..
You can prevent that by painting a coat of the original colour over the edge after you put the tape on to seal the edge then start painting the second colour.

Hey Henry, thank you so much for your support. So, while deciding on what paint company you want to go with, I would suggest that as a beginner go with any good acrylic paint company. Mig, Vallejo and there are several more new ones. These are relatively easy to use and can be diluted with water. The brand does not really matter as much, as long as you go with a well known name. You can then start experimenting with various paint types and brands, till you arrive at your own favourite. Hope that helps :) Good luck and thanks once again :)

Until it dries... Acrylic paints will dry really quickly butb3 careful not to apply too much paint because it will take more time to dry then

Hey, everyone works at their own pace. Some people got through a kit over the weekend, others may go slow and take a month with the same kit. Its all up to you.... as long as you enjoy the build :) Good luck with the hobby.
I use tamiya paint any thoughts on using retarder? It is very hard to handbrush tamiya paint
Great video - I was looking at brush tips to avoid using airbrush/spray cans. Then see sprayed with clear! - doesn't that defeat the whole point in brush application??
Hey Dean....thanks. I found that using spray varnish, both gloss and matt, is really convenient. If you would prefer not to use the spray cans, then the process of applying varnish is identical to applying paint, thin self levelling layers. But, I would suggest you give the spray cans a try, they really help save time. The objective is to make the best kit that one can :)
Thank you for trying to assist me. I’m still hopeless at at. I tried doing your way and there is no doubt you do it so well. Me? I’m just useless at it like most things I attempt. The model I did looked so bad I binned it. I’ll stick to doing nothing. I’d love to be able to do work like this.
Richard, I have lost count of the number of models I have binned over the years. Improvement comes with patience and practice. With every model you make or bin, you will learn valuable lessons. Stick with it. In the end making great model is just part of the experience, just having fun while making a model is the greater joy :) Don't give up yet.

Goodafternoon, how long do you let a layer of paint dry, before you apply the next one?
Hey Jimmmy. Since these were acrylic paints they dry rather quickly. So, no more than an hour between the layers, that too as I was being extra careful. However, if you use some other type of paint the drying time may vary. For the oil paint I used in the end, those paints will take several hours to dry. Hope that helps :)

Thought it was necessary to prime the model before applying acrylic paint, but it looks like the paint held nicely in your case?
Hi Glowworm...there was a time when priming the model was essential...but the quality of paints has improved so much over the years that one can do without priming. However, even now, when dealing with mixed mediums...plastic, metal, photo etch....on the same kit..i like to unify everything with a primer coat. So, it is very much dependent on the project at hand and so forth. But a simple plastic kit with good modelling paints...I really don't see any reason to prime the kit. Specially when hand painting, it just ads an extra layer.
So just a question since I’m new to the hobby, just repeated lights coats on top of the other until u get a smooth finish?

I'm very curious. In this video, and I think the first one, you put on the lacquer before the metallic paint. Is that order important?
Hey Rekov, I am not sure what you mean by lacquer before the metallic paint. I am assuming you mean that I gave metallic parts a black base before applying the metallic paint. I personally feel that it is important to black base parts, because that makes the metallic paint really shine. However, a really shiny metallic finish is not always what one desires from the finish, sometimes one wants a more dull metal finish, say for example in a much used metal finish aircraft, then one can apply the metal paint directly. I hope that helps, please let me know if I understood the question correctly :)

I notice you used a spray can to add a clear coat. I brush paint my clear coat but notice it reacts to my paintwork. What's the best way to brush paint acrylic clear to avoid bleeds and discolouration?👍

Yes you can. In fact, I am about to upload the next hand painted series in which I actually do sand out the paint. However, make sure you use a very high grit sanding paper or sponge. I used a 2000 grit sponge. And keep a keen eye on the paint, it is very easy to go through the paint and then have a huge ugly bump there. Good luck :)

Yes you can, but make sure you test them for quality and colour on some extra plastic before applying on the kit :)
Ive been painting warhammer for just a few years but i got some historical model kits recently and som im watching your channel :b but i have to wonder, is painting while on the sprues a common thing in this part of the hobby? Coz in warhammer its a bit of a tabboo/meme
Hey Tuusol. Painting on the sprue, specially for small parts, is very common. If the 'gate' is conveniently placed (meaning that cutting the part and cleaning it will not damage the paint job), there is absolutely no reason not to paint parts on the sprue. In bigger builds, like ships or 32nd scale aircraft, you may end up looking at hundreds of tiny parts. Most model makers find it convenient to leave the parts on the sprue and to cut them only when the need to be glued in place :)
I messed up on painting the belly and the wings is there anyway I can strip off the paint????
Hey Aldo, yes you can strip the paint off...however, it is a tricky and messy affair. First let me tell you what not to do...don't use a strong thinner or spirit. It may take the paint off, but it will damage the plastic. Usually, when it comes to acrylics, we use diluted Dettol (yup the antiseptic liquid) to strip paint. You will have to dilute the Dettol and dip the effected part of kit in it for a few minutes (that will depend on how much paint you have put on the kit), then using a soft brush, remove the paint. You may have to repeat this process a few times to get rid of all the paint. There are also some special paint strippers in the market, but I have never used one, so can't comment on that. Don't forget to use aerosol sprays in a well-ventilated area, preferably wearing a mask. There endeth the lesson.

Hey Alain, there are many brands out there that you can use. Acrylic paints are the best suited for hand painting. Vallejo, Citadel, Lifecolor, Revell are some brands that are suited for hand painting. But more important than the brand is the technique you develop with practice. Once you have your technique worked out, you can use any paint and get great results. Hope that helps :)

Hey Oliver....it is difficult to suggest one particular ration. You see different brand of paints come in different consistencies. Also, older paint tends to be thicker than new one, even within the same brand. So one ratio is hard to arrive at. It is better you thin down the paint to the point where you get the kind of coverage you want. That is what you should aim for. I know it will take some experimentation. I would suggest that you but some disposable plastic spoons and practice on those. It is what I do whenever I try a new product or technique. Good luck with the build :)

Would you recommend an easy little tank as a first modelkit?
Yes, I very much would. But I would suggest you start off with a 1/48 scale tank from Tamiya, with rubber tracks. These are relatively simple to put together with fewer parts, but very nicely detailed. The reason I recommend a larger scale than a 72nd is that the smaller kits are not necessarily the easier kit to make. Also, there are usually plenty of builds for Tamiya kits on the net which can also be helpful. Good luck :)

when i apply 4-5 coats of paint, the details gets covered by the paint after it dries. how do i prevent that?
Hey Robert...if the paint is covering the details I suggests that the paint is too thick. Thin it down so that you get very light layers. Thick paint with cover up the details and also fill the recessed panel lines and rivets, another thing we want to avoid :)

Does painting with enamels differ from acrylics in the coating process? Meaning would it be better to thin it and do multiple layers as well?
Right, enamels generally give better coverage that acrylics. Also, they give a more even finish. You will have to thin then down, but not as much as acrylics. I suggest you take some disposable plastic spoons and experiment on them as how much to dilute paints etc. depends on individual paint brands. The only downside to enamels is that they take a rather long time to dry, so once you have applied the paint be patient and give it a lot of time to dry. Once again, a trick I sometimes use is that once I have painted a kit, I will also paint a spoon. I will not touch the kit till the paint of the spoon is completely dry. This way I avoid leaving finger prints on the kit. Hope this helps and good luck with your build :)

@@jrseitz21 Hi John, if you make a mistake while painting. The first thing to do is to step back. Do not try to fix the mistake by trying to wipe away the paint or rubbing a thinner on it, so forth. That rarely helps and more often results in an even bigger mess. Let the paint dry. Once the paint is dry you have two options, first you can simply now paint over with fresh paint and correct your mistake. Sometimes, the mistake may leave the surface uneven and rough. In such cases you can either strip the paint off (very dicey and not recommended) or simple smoothen the surface with fine sanding paper or sponge. Then clean the area and paint again. Usually, the first method is good enough for most small mistakes. Hope that helps :) I did not understand the second question about control panel and opps...sorry.
@@scalemodellingmadness4114 it was a example incase you didn't understand. Meaning if i paint a controller knob and slip kinda thing. A protruding detail item such as a lever on a dashboard or whatever else. And thanks again. I kinda figured the best thing to do is let it dry then come back and try scraping or sanding or maybe mineral spirits. But just thought I'd ask. Maybe you would have a....simple do this and wala kinda thing i wouldn't think about.

Thanks Rade. The time one has to wait between coats depends on the type of paint being used. In this instance, I used acrylic paints, which take very little time to dry. But to keep on the safer side I waited till the paint was properly dry. The way I judge that is, once the paint is dry to touch, I then wait an additional half an hour to an hour. The reason is that we do not want a fresh layer of paint to reactivate the previous layers, that will create a puddle of paint and ruin the build :)
What do you use as a paint thinner? Water?
Hi Filipe, yes I use water for the acrylic paints here. But only for the acrylics. If you decide to use lacquer or any other type of paint you will need special thinners :)

Hey there. There was variation in the paint, as no matter how hard one tries getting a super even coat with brushes is difficult. As for myself, I like the slight tonal variation, since even in real machines, there is hardly ever an even unblemished coat of paint. I guess maybe straight out of the factory, but a few days of use starts resulting in blemishes. However, if you want a pristine look, just keep adding more very light layers of paint. You will get an even paint layer but keep in mind the paint shade will get deeper and also the layer of paint will get thicker. :)

yeah...no primer. Although if you want (specially if working with photo etch or resin) you can apply primer. I would recommend the kind that you get in aerosol cans. I have used the Tamiya one and it is excellent.

Mr. Super clear should NOT be used with acrylic paint. Please put a disclaimer here. The product itself says not to use with water-based hobby colors and not to be used with decals. In this case, use Mr. Top Coat as Mr. Top Coats are for acrylics. I love your hand painting technique. Wonderful video!! : )
Thanks Dove. I have been using Mr. Super Clear for some years now and actually I have found that it is particularly bad for some lacquer based paints, usually Mr. Color. I know its funny and ironic, but sometimes when I applied this on Mr. Color paint the entire paint disappeared and exposed the base paint. I usually test the paint/varnish/wash on some spare plastic before applying it to the kit. Seems to be the safest way. The varnish works just fine on most acrylic paints, as you can see in the video and many other videos I have done using the same. Just make sure you test it before applying to the kit. @@scalemodellingmadness4114 This is so interesting to hear that it works out on your kits. The bottle states not to use with water based colors. I tried it on mine and it melted the acrylic lol. I'm glad to know it works on some of the kits. You got a ton of people hand painting again : ). Your technique is so awesome : ) - thank you thank you.
