I'm kinda late to the VoicePlay party ('discovered' them with My Mother Told Me) and have been bingeing over the last couple of months. I'm blown away by their talent. On this one, everyone was incredible as always - but shout out to Layne for controlling that pace and making the whole thing irresistible with that awesome drumbeat.
Can we just talk about how Geoff managed to sound amazing even with those long vampire fangs in his mouth??? Those things are hard to even talk in. Let alone sing with!!!! Also props to J. None for doing it too!!!
Its probably pre-recorded, however, I must say, it is easier than it looks to sing with vampire fangs in. I'm typically a mezzo range but I can do bass somewhat and I performed with vampire fangs in a few times. Long story.
According to Peter Barber (another bass with a YT channel, who does reactions to the videos) ALL the vocals are pre-recorded. That's how they get such complex sound. Geoff is singing AND doing basslines because they record the solo as one track, then the bassline as another track. Same for Layne's insane beatboxing - he can do multiple tracks.

You know, I followed Voice Play for a while now and mostly for Geoff tbh. But man I fell in love with the voice from Eli at 3:36, so clean and beautiful

The makeup is just insanely awesome! Eli's face at 3:24 - my first thought was "Do NOT take a bowl of chili from him. That's the face of a man with human body parts in his freezer. And under his bed."
It was really cool to see how all five of them got a good opportunity to showcase their unique talents for this theme. They transformed a classic Danny Elfman composition into a literal transformation on screen, and vocally. Every voice changed countless times, and it's stuff like this that really highlights what they can do. I feel the same way about Moana tbh.
I absolutely love how the background music in the very beginning is the same as the beginning music to grim grinning ghosts and then it morphs into a different tune after. Love it
I’m not sure if it was intentional or not, but it’s also very reminiscent of the “Haunted Mansion Holiday” at Disneyland, where Jack Skellington takes over the Mansion and tries to make it more festive.
I love how driving the bass and percussion are, especially when the lead vocal lines are slower, and the bass line from 2:39-2:51 is so fun! This entire arrangement and video are delightful and I can't help coming back to them time and time again!

The song is utterly amazing but I’m just in awe of the makeup team having to do their jobs piecemeal like that. Also just how smooth this all is with the video editing and the singing, and also the reactions the transformations and characterisation throughout the song is amazing.

The song is utterly amazing but I’m just in awe of the makeup team having to do their jobs piecemeal like that. Also just how smooth this all is with the video editing and the singing, and also the reactions the transformations and characterisation throughout the song is amazing.
