this is the best rock and roll hall of fame induction , flea is a very intelligent man, and i must say i was surprise because he is always goofy and shit, but boy i was wrong
ChernovFan100 i haven't seen it but the part that gets me is where he says the thing about cliff that thing about giving your gift before you die, it was a great way to end someone grief with that line, oh and i agree when he says that metallica are not the best musicians individual, but when put together they are the best metal band
Me too, especially when I saw James' face after he talked about Cliff. He clearly still misses his friend. Flea's such an amazing guy. He definitely couldn't have done this speech any better. Such a shame Cliff isn't with us anymore to sing more of his songs. Truly a big loss to the art world
Jericho Freman Let me try to stop another 'who's better' discussion here. Try to respect both completely different players the way they are/were for their own style, inginuity and soul instead of placing one above the other, like a simpleton. I'm not calling you a simpleton, but It's just that those discussions never end well, with all kinds of arguments that make no sense whatsoever about things like ones mother.. They are/were both amazing players. Personally, I love Flea because of his outstanding techniques, aggressive grooves and rhytms, popping and slapping and all that with the stamina of five horses and also his great sense of melody and ability to switch between the 'sensitive', melodical and more aggressive bass parts. I also think he's a great guy on a personal level. Cliff was very clever in his playing, because of his excellent sense of melody (he was a big Bach-fan, which you can clearly hear on various occasions) and because he was able to 'walk the thin line' while remaining a very tight player in the overall mix. His real talent was that he always knew in advance how his playing would sound in the mix, which is very important to be able form the right foundation for a nice, big wall of sound. His playing sounded very 'mature' that way. Not a real showoff as he would always just add the right amount of extracurricular notes and never really overdid those. He was very down to earth that way and had a very 'hands on' mentality to make Metallica sound the way they did back then, which was totally bitching and innovative! Also love his distorted 2 channel sound with a wah every now and then. Really suited Metallica's dark, powerful sound!
6:42 - James really felt that. In several interviews I've seen with him, whenever they begin mentioning Cliff you can see James' face change. It's obvious that Cliff Burton as a person was admired by everyone in Metallica.
Henrik Høyrup If it weren't for Cliff there wouldn't be this Metallica. There will be a Metallica but not this one. He got them out of LA. Ron Govney is a good bass player but he didn't put Metallica on the map like Cliff did.
At Night 1 of their xXx Anniversary shows, when Rob started playing Anesthesia, James had to catch his breath and walked towards the back of the stage to take a minute, and wipe the tears from his face.
When he got the news that Cliff was gone, he destroyed a hotel room and threw a TV out of a window that night. Not out of the normal rock star "fun" but out of anger and sadness.
He was more than admired, he was like a brother to them. Whenever Cliff is even mentioned, you can see in James's eyes how much he misses him. So much so that its useless to describe it into words even. Cliff Burton lives forever in our hearts and memories.
and the next day, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, the Stones and other 100 bands asked Flea to inducted them in to the Rock'n Roll Hall of fame that was some speech!!!
I feel sorry for Flea, he read out such a great speech for Metallicas induction, yet RHCP had a real shitty induction done by Chris Rock who hardly even talked about the music.
Chris's speech was great. It was funny, because Chris Rock is a comedian(and a friend of the band for over 20 years). Flea is a deep music lover so he makes a speech talking about it that way.
This may have been the most heartfelt induction speech into any hall of fame ever. Flea was great and you can tell the respect and love he has for their music.
This is one of the most heartfelt, sincere, and just plain awesome speeches I've ever heard. I agree with every word Flea has to say (including "being a bass solo myself" because let's face it, if anyone is going to be a bass solo it's Flea). Metallica has literally changed my life for the better. It's something that the 'non-fans' can never understand.
"...I didn't know what IT was, but the only thing i knew for sure, was that it was MIGHTY thing..." -I think that could sum up 99% percent of us who discovered Metallica back then.
Fuck it, I discovered Metallica when I was 5 back in 2001 and I can assure you it was just so intense and so powerful that I just couldn't stop listening to them. One of, if not the best moment of my life.
Seeing James tear up while Flea was talking about Cliff literally choked me up. Say what you will about James and his image, but he is the Metal Dad, and I hate to see him sad.
I come back to this every now and then... Flea is clearly a fan and this isn't just some lip service. He goes off script on every other sentence just because he cannot contain himself with all the things he wants to say. He should have gone on for another 10 minutes...
I went into my kitchen after Flea said "Anesthesia Pulling Teeth". I looked in my fridge, and all i could think was: Ba-na-na-Ba-na-na-Ba-na-na-Ba-na-na-Ba-na.
You can See the Emotion on James face at 6:47 when Flea talks about Cliff it looks like he is really close to tears. Can only imagine the Memories going through his mind at that moment.
Hey man, I agree. Flea really put together a beautiful, well spoken speech. I love how he gave a nice piece of the speech to Cliff, and I can only imagine how proud his parents were just sitting there listening to someone talking about their kid. Wow.
"By that strictest criteria, you have to have Metallica in it." Well said! Thanks universe for Kirk, Cliff, James, Lars, Jason, Robert, Bob, and the rest of the family.
Flea's speech was so beyond great that all of us watching, who aren't even part of Metallica itself, plus perhaps some who aren't even fans of the band, felt honored, touched, and so grateful just hearing it for some inexplicable reason.
I am not a RHCP fan, but “Flea” not only made an amazing speech, but it was also very cool when he acknowledged the true artist as being one who expresses the anger and pain in life as a beautiful outlet and not a random set of rhyming words .... 👍🏻 Very nice...
This is one of the most beautiful tribute speeches I've ever heard. I can never listen to it without tearing up. Well done Flea, and thank you Metallica!
Chris Bassartist that's why I love reading deep into the comments. Cuz somewhere someone is gonna throw a gem out like that. That was the comment of the year!!!! Well played 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
My mother took me to my first concert along with my friends, and YES it was Metallica "Master of Puppets" opening up for Ozzy "Ulitmate Sin". What a special memory. Seeing Cliff Burton with Metallica on stage was an experience I am glad to look back on.
I never saw this again since 2009 when I saw it live on TV until now. Very touching speech Flea is awesome! James wanted to cry when Flea talked about Cliff, amazing words
This is one of the most impressive, flattering speeches i have ever heard. And i'm so proud that it is for Metallica's induction into the Hall Of Fame. All the years growing up listening to Metallica, this is the speech i wish they had being inducted. Thank you Flea.
Dude, James is the Master of the One-Liner, but the best/funniest one I ever heard was when he was describing the auditioning process to "replace" Cliff (RIP) and when Les Claypool rolled in, James said, "Uh, no, you're too good," Greatness!!!!
Man... Flea just nailed this speech . Anthony K was right about this ... Flea is an all time rocker. Hard not to be emotional after hearing his kind thoughtful, words about Cliff.
Amazing Introduction! Just as good as when Chris Rock helped induct RHCP. Both Bands are in a world of their own. The uniqueness they bring to music. And what he said about Cliff, madd love right there. BTW, James's children are spitting images of him and his wife, it's freaking crazy. But they all smile like him.

My first concert was Metallica in 1993 Cincinnati, Oh. It was so badass! I'll never forget it. What a show they put on. They give it 110% every single show.
There are certain things that happen, where everyone knows where they were when the heard about it or saw it: 1.) For older people, the assassination of JFK 2.) Space Shuttle Disaster 3.) 9/11 4.) _first time hearing Fade to Black_
"The worst tragedy that could ever happen to anyone, in my opinion, is that when they die, they never sang their song to anyone. They never gave the gift that was inside them." Flea
Let's face it, he IS a bass solo! Really enjoyed that, a man who knows music, lives music giving a heart felt picture of a band he clearly respects and loves! I remember the first time i heard Master of Puppets and i remember listening to it 3 million times in a row, it was a mind blown moment!!
When Flea started to talk about Cliff, I notice James REALLY lost it. Great words said. Having seen Cliff in 1985, I can say this is true. As a bass player, he's the Randy Rhodes of bass. I felt that way then & still do.
I think he likes metallica
@Music Guy r/whoooosh

You can see that towards the end of the speech, James seems to be thinking: "are you finished?", LOL.
Me too, especially when I saw James' face after he talked about Cliff. He clearly still misses his friend.
Flea's such an amazing guy. He definitely couldn't have done this speech any better.

Flea is by far one of the fucking coolest humans ever.
Flea is the king of speech. The way he puts words is just incredible.
4:35 - 6:51 tribute to Cliff Burton
Such an incredible speech by Flea.... :*)
5:37 "A beautiful piece of music played by a awesome rocker of a young man a masterpiece of a human being"
aww man Kirk's gonna cry! 2:45
Marcus - he always looks like that
Kirk always gets a little teary when Cliff is being discussed..I do too and I didn't even know him.
He's so cute, even if he is like 25 years older than me...
There are certain things that happen, where everyone knows where they were when the heard about it or saw it:
1.) For older people, the assassination of JFK
2.) Space Shuttle Disaster
3.) 9/11
4.) _first time hearing Fade to Black_
🙏🏼
"The worst tragedy that could ever happen to anyone, in my opinion, is that when they die, they never sang their song to anyone. They never gave the gift that was inside them." Flea
One of the most intelligent, well written, spontaneous and sincere speeches I've heard to induct a band. Flea is a gentleman.
"James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujellio, Jason Newsted and Cliff Burton!"
Dave Mustaine : Am i a joke to you?
Let's face it, he IS a bass solo! Really enjoyed that, a man who knows music, lives music giving a heart felt picture of a band he clearly respects and loves! I remember the first time i heard Master of Puppets and i remember listening to it 3 million times in a row, it was a mind blown moment!!
I review metallica albums on my channel if anyone is interested!
When Flea started to talk about Cliff, I notice James REALLY lost it. Great words said. Having seen Cliff in 1985, I can say this is true. As a bass player, he's the Randy Rhodes of bass. I felt that way then & still do.
Flea is such an amazing, deep intelligent and humble human being!!! I love you so much Flea, I love RHCP and I absolutely adore Metallica!!!!
