How to Price Antiques, Vintage & Collectibles to Sell Fast!

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 24 พ.ย. 2024
- We're looking for the sweet spot in this video! We get to preview the Garden Club of Saint Petersburg, Florida's annual flea market, combing their donated wares to figure out what's antique, what's vintage and how to price it so they'll make more, but still give good deals to their flea market shoppers. (Of course, we don't get to pre-buy at this event, but knowing what's there certainly tempts us to return for the sale...)
There's an art and a science to this! The 'art' is in the display, grouping the true collectibles and picking them out from tables of random linens, dishware, kitchen items, art and jewelry, then assembling them where the resellers who flock to this annual event can find them at affordable prices. The 'science' is in setting the prices right, looking at today's market to be sure that Fostoria American barware attracts today's buyer (we'll have to cut that price in half), that McCoy planters useful to the Garden Club attendees aren't tagged at giveaway prices, and that Shelley cream and sugar sets go for 40% of retail value (mark those up!), rather than just a few dollars each like the common English pieces do.
We get to see it all in this video, everything from handsome antique andirons (misplaced in Florida, price those cheaper) and vintage art (that's a 1930s Hawaiian steamship line menu in that frame!) to solid wood furniture, 1950s barkcloth and a clock that could have been on Liberace's piano. It's fun to help the club maximize its most important fundraising event of the year, good to hear that most items sold and didn't end up being re-donated by the club at the end, and best of all to know that they broke the five-figure mark it sales!

Omgosh this is so sweet and cute ... The little ladies working so hard and George man of great patience.... Bravo 👍
Wild George, you are a very good man to go through and help these people. You know, so much, and they call on the best.😊😊😊
I'm glad I can help their cause
George, you have attracted a wonderful community of people!
I agree, I feel very grateful for you all
George is better than a history book!❤️
Aww thanks!
I have got to comment! And I'm a rare commentor lol I'm also a new subscriber, and I've got to say you are amazing, amazing, amazing! I have never met. Anyone was such as genuine, and a kind character. You truly want to educate people, and you take pride in what you do. I am obsessed with your videos. I almost feel like I need to quit my job because they are interfering with my time on TH-cam watching your videos! You're amazing keep this up, you have a strong following and I absolutely see why. I am so happy I found you.
"You are an amazing man".... She is right ;) I truly appreciate the knowledge you have shared with us through the years. I have honestly learned so much from all your videos! Just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you!!!!! :)
Hello George, that old fan, we had one. Before hand held hair dryers, we used to lay on the bed and hang our long hair over the side and use that fan to dry our hair. It fell apart we moved last October and I pitched it. Was downsizing but instead we lucked into a great place. Future antique store coming in an old farmhouse. Why not a new adventure at 64? I have been in and out of dealing all my life. You have inspired me George to keep going!
That's fantastic! I'm excited for you. This TH-cam community has reinspired me as well. Where is the location?
I am in Arkansas River valley. Our antiques are not as exotic as the east coast antiques I am afraid. I learn so much from you George.
@@ORourkesLittlefield Thank you! I sure enjoy seeing what everyone has. I found some great pieces between Russelville and Ft. Smith on one trip
Very nice of you to volunteer your services to the charity event George. .
Great buys for sure!!
That lamp shade was great!
So nice of you to help out. Hopefully your input made their organization more money! 😊
I hope so too!
Am sure they did, I bet some would come just to see George ❤
Hi George! Boy it's almost worth planning a vacation trip around their annual sale!😊
Good evening, George. I liked that Victorian pitcher. If it had the tumblers, that would make a beautiful set. The cigarette box was a nice one. I would've been tempted to put more on it. I used to have a fan like the $195.00 one. That thing would kick out a lot of air. I'd like to have those binoculars. I'd certainly pay $30.00 for them. I'd have bought both of those footstools, too. I really liked the Victorian kerosene lamp...the electric part would have to go, though. There's no knowing how many of those things I've tossed in the rubbish. Another way to distinguish the old R S Prussia mark is that the old has a period, after the word Prussia. The fake one don't have that. Just feeling the difference in quality, between real R S Prussia and a fake, is _very_ telling. That would be a fantastic sale to shop! I'd enjoy spending a day there. Thanks for taking us along!
Really liked that pitcher! I bet there are tumblers out there somewhere. Those fans are really kicking apparently. The gout stools are really underappreciated these days in my opinion. Yes to de-electrifying the converted lamps, hopefully it wasn't drilled and wrecked. Good tip about the Prussia having the period! I'm glad you had fun with this one
Thank you George and Xeno.😊
We knew it wasn't u Xeno 😂
Thank you for Sharing. I so enjoy when you share your knowledge of so many things. Please Stay Safe Happy and Healthy Have A Wonderful Day
Thank you Karla!
I played the price guessing with George and matched him on moat prices, all because I learn so much from George.
That's so good to hear! I want things to make sense so you can have fun out there collecting
Hello from Wisconsin. I believe the little asleep red hair baby doll at 18:59 may have been a reborn baby. Although new, they are considered one of a kind art dolls and can be very valuable depending on the artist. I collect reborn babies and other dolls. I think you should take some time to learn more about dolls. The old German doll was beautiful and in very good condition from what you showed. I would have loved to see her body and limbs also. The limbs being detached, and missing hair was not a big deal, if they were in good condition. I have restrung those antique dolls many times and would have jumped at that one for only $25.00. I have learned a lot from you about glass and pottery. Keep up the good work and thank you for taking us along. Much appreciated. Thank you and God bless.
You’re so NICE to these women! They probably love you. They have pretty good stuff to put on a sale.
They sure did!
I know I’ve mentioned this before but I worked for Amicis Catering for many years and have catered many many weddings there….. it’s a great venue but kinda small inside… great memories!! Great pieces!!!
I did the Floridiana show there once, it's a tight space for a big crowd but so pleasant
I collect Blue Sky , they have been going up in price. Kudos for helping these folks out. You do have a wealth of knowledge to share.
How wonderful of you George! ❤❤❤
love that you are so generous with your knowledge. pricing is difficult and overwhelming for me. I imagine those ladies super appreciate your guidance. I know that I sure do!
The Blue Mountain pottery pieces, that is our centennial symbol. They released a line with that symbol on souvenir pieces. 1967. It could be that they produced some up to 1970, especially is it doesn't have the dates on them. ☺
That's right, I should've recognized that!
@@TheAntiqueNomad😉 It's not something you would see everyday and I am sure you would have realized it a few days later in one of those waking up in the middle of the night moments. 😁
I LOVE that silver looking metal bamboo plate that lady has! I wish I could get it😊
I think this was your best informative show because it covered the more common collectibles we all see at sales.
Love those Gaston Petridis paintings - I would have grabbed those. Gorgeous frames.
Begaye is a very common Navajo surname… I knew Rex Begaye who was a Navajo artist that was based in Sarasota… sadly he left us way too soon…. But I love the print they had too!!
Yes, it is, and there are many members with that surname who have done well in the arts
Great video George! Thanks for sharing!
Love this type of video, so informative and what you share and how seems to stick for me. Thanks
That's great! I like it when it sticks, it works for me that way too
Countdown makes me happy
I'd love to shop this sale. Great work, George.
Thanks! It was fun but a lot of work, yes
Hey George. I found you through the Crazy Lamp Lady !! I love your videos.
Thank you! I'm so glad you did! Please feel free to join us for chat, we have premieres every M/W at 8pm eastern
Hey George great to watch your video after the live show. ❤
Hope you enjoyed it!
Great show George! Thank you very much.
I loved that pelican figurine
Great video! I used to live in Tampa & I love St Pete!
Me too!
You had a lotta fun and we had a lotta fun watching!! (P.S. It would be fun to know what sold and for a ball park figure!)
Love your videos!! Learn so much!
Awesome! Thank you!
So fun & another teachable video!
Thanks Sir George❤
My pleasure!
Thanks for the shopping trip😊
That looks like my kind of Sale..❤
I will have to try to go next year, now that I know about this!
Yes! It's worthwhile
What a hoot about the Bonanza view master reel! I need to plan a trip next year just to go to this sale.
Lol yes
Thank you George for all the interesting information. Us beginners really like to know what’s going on and we can take what you’re saying we’re suggesting on pricing at our next yard sale. You are a wealth of information and we appreciate you sharing it with us. I’m going to continue to watch you and support you. KAT from Birmingham, Alabama.
Thanks, Kat! Birmingham seems like a good place to sell
Glad that’s in Florida , and not Calgary . Otherwise, I’d be taking a mortgage on my home lol. What a beautiful selection .
Being that it’s deemed a flea market , did you say to sell an item usually at half the price on line ?
Wonderful to see they did well ! You are a good soul for guiding those sweet ladies .
Generally true for vintage items, about 1/3 of retail on new stuff
@@TheAntiqueNomad apperently there’s a thrift store in North Carolina where the owner just passed away . A vlogger named Daze with Jordan the Lion just showed it on his vlog . I think they will have an estate sale soon . Maybe you’re near there . Thought I’d let you know .
Love your knowledge and willingness to teach us!
Thank you for caring enough to watch! I love sharing it all
Love this video George! Thank you!
Thank you!
Wow. Lots of nice stuff and great prices! Did you get to go back and shop the sale?
No, I had to go out of town that day! Friends of mine did, and they were happy with what they got
I’m waiting for Bristol glass to get some respect again!
Watch this Wednesday's video, I have a special announcement about 'Bristol'
Looks like a beautiful place
Do I have time to hustle down there to snag the dogwood wall pocket? Love those things.
I'm afraid the sale's over but check it out next February
Hey George! Im really enjoying discovering ur channel. 😊 im just wondering why u priced the Bordallo Pinheiro (portuguese ceramic piece) so low. Im just curious because in Europe(not just portugal) they would go for much more. Thanks!
I always pick up button bags because I use them in crafts.
Yep! The prices were right too
See ya then
Hi George, i see in you videos your in Florida , I thought you lived in Dawson Springs Ky. I 0:50 0:50 lived in madisonville now in Manitou Ky
Hi there! I travel a lot. Will be back in Dawson this spring
this looks nice!! what’s days is it?
I'm afraid it happened already, the preview night was the evening that I filmed this so I couldn't get the video out ahead. Check on it next year around the last weekend of February or so
By george good job
By me! lol. Thank you
When you go and price, do you get first pick?
That would probably be considered a conflict of interest 😂
George has said in the past that he doesn’t pick stuff for him. 👍
Nope but he said he may come back and shop❤
He is too professional for that..❤
The blue art glass at 2:30. Can yo tell us a little about that? I think it had $30 on it.
My guess is Shannon Crystal?🤔
It looks like some Shannon Crystal, but it's actually Polish made glass from the 1990s. I suggested they drop the price, it didn't sell until half off
@@TheAntiqueNomadInteresting. Thank you! 😃 I will do a little research to see how to differentiate them.
George! Can you get me that Fenton basket at 13:11? Or is this already over?
-Stoneking
If I wouldn't have gotten so excited over that basket, I'd have waited until I watched the whole thing and heard this was already long since over with 😂🤦😭 Do you have any Fenton baskets like that one, George? It doesn't need to be a painted one. I just absolutely love that color, design and size... It would be even better if it were a lavender color though 😍 I think the most recent thing I purchased from you were the Fenton books. I'd love it if you could find me one of these baskets PLLEEAAASSEEE 🙏💜🙏💜
I have a couple of Fenton baskets but not quite that shade of blue and not opened up that much. I'll keep an eye out for you!
What does the money that raised get used for?
It funds the upkeep and maintenance of the building and property taxes. They do other fundraisers for their projects, events and community support
I sell in the Midwest n all the prices you stated were low for what I sell them for.
That's the idea, this is supposed to be a flea market where people can get deals and resellers can make a little money
@@TheAntiqueNomad 😂 I wished thrift stores would realize that that they lose a good part of their business by trying to get retail but I guess they like being in the storage business.
Of course businesses are welcome to do as they please it just that it limits the customer base.
Reminds me of Technsports who said you can get some of the money all the time or all the money some of the time.
The pre-music isn't a favorite and the countdown makes me nervous. It's spooky. Always a relief when George finally appears.
It runs 5 minutes to let folks get in, maybe just come in at 8:05 eastern
@@TheAntiqueNomad don't ever change countdown ,,, me n baby Ray or yellow submarine would miss our trip
@TheAntiqueNomad yes by George I could not have said better
Hi am vovine muma from Mombasa Kenya ,I have a German stove of 1914,but it no longer turn water, but back then it use to turn water into red colour ,please help if you can buy it as it is?
Hello! It sounds very interesting. You can probably sell it best on eBay internationally, even as-is it would get attention
I have soo much Fenton glass ,milk glass etc for sale and I'm desperate need of help to sell
If you’re selling it as a collection there’s resellers who would likely want it but if you’re seeking a retail price you might need to take time to sell individually
Hi janet Pogue
Hi there to you, 😊 have a good week !
😊❤👏
I'm not a economist but to make levity of the situation, i never understood why antiques go up in price with inflation? heck they were made years and years ago ,they are paid for,not like "well materials have gone up in price so they went up too" lol
It's more that the floor price of everything goes up, so suddenly antiques look like a relatively better deal. For instance, you can get a 1910s round American oak table almost anywhere now for a few hundred dollars...at a new solid wood furniture store, they'd be twice that price
Is royal albert king albert s brother.?
Actually his grandson/namesake Prince Albert II (born 1895) was the source of the name
😂😂😂😂 nice question
I thought there would be no connection, shows what I know 😮
@@janetpogue4970 They did it so Victoria would give them the Royal Warrant and they could sell to the royal houses of England. It worked!
Very interesting, and a bit sly 😅
✨💖✨
Is it better to increase price a little to have haggle room?
Everyone has a theory about that one way or another. At an antique show, yes. At a flea market, you only have 2 days plus preview night to sell it all, or it gets re-donated to other charities
What's next? $20.00 admission to a sale where everything is donated!!
This sale is to make money for a cause so if I were able to attend, I would be glad to pay the entrance fee.
That $20 fee is only for the early buyers. They do that because otherwise the place would be too full to move, they used to do early buyers for free and the fire marshal threatened to shut them down. The $20 goes to support the club and also keeps it down to a manageable amount of people
