Right, Lots of 50's I believe had a Mustard Seedin it. It's from a Bible Verse. "For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you." (Matthew 17:20-21).
My 102 grandma passed away last Christmas. I inherited a bag full of vintage jewelry. Didn’t take a look before sending it to Goodwill. I did keep a 1930s Louis Vuitton trunk bag, 1950s Hermes, among others. I now believe that bag of costume jewelry was very valuable 😭

I'm sorry that happened.. my Stepmom in her 80s set out a table of her jewelry for her Mobile Home Park yard sale. Someone came by and bought everything!!! Mom was in early stages of dementia, but we didn't know that then .. oh well, someone bought some good items.

don't forget that Swarovski fancy stones are foil backed and and some are painted ( called delights) and Swarovski thinks a lot of their stones.
Exactly. I used to work in a costume jewelry factory in south Wales, UK. All set with Swarovski crystals which mostly had foiled backs, often including enamel, and plated with rhodium or gold. It was quite expensive for faux jewelry, and all pieces are marked on the back with A&S for Attwood and Sawyer.

I am a jewelry maker. You found some lovely pieces. The Blue Rhinestone pin doesnt have any aurora borealis crystals in it. Aurora borealis will appear as a rainbow coating. Also the larger rectangular stones are not considered Baguettes. Just an FYI. Great work!

I have one right now sitting right next to my bed that I wear, it is not made of any precious metal at all but that mustard seed is very precious to me!

Rusty I read where the striating on the backs of brooches were started in the late 70s or 80s through today and it’s a way to tell how old the piece is , it may be something to do with importing from other countries too. Smooth looking backs on pins and brooches mean made in the 60s or earlier. This is what was told to me by a very knowledgeable collector, It may not be true, but I know when I’m looking at brooches in the wild, a smooth back indicates an older piece to me. Love learning from you! 😊

Regarding the Double Heart Shaped Brooch you inspected: the small heart with the clear resin with the yellow seed embedded in it. The seed is a mustard seed, it’s a symbol of Christian Faith and harkens back to a scripture in the Bible which is as follows: “And He *said to them, “Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.” Matthew 17:20. I agree that this is not a great piece but there are others that are better. The jewelry was very popular in the 1940’s, 50’s & 60’s. There are at least 3 other scriptures in the Bible that mention the seed. The more valuable pieces suspend the mustard seed in glass.

Thank you for all the info! I inherited my great grandmother and my grandmother's jewelry and there were many costume pieces. I have often wondered how much they were worth even though they are costume jewelry. I'll look through them again for some of the things you pointed out here.
I have mom’s large cameo that she wore in the casket during her funeral. She left it to me. I’m 76, and plan to start wearing it to church. I haven’t worn it enough and mom passed in 2008.
