Your defensive plays are never boring. I learned so much from, from recognizing if you have a hand that can win or is worth pursuing to how to read the pond and always keep a flexible hand that can play defensively if needed
Tho i have to admit sometimes it hurts to see the possibilities escape right in front of me and i end up greeding, but i'm learning!

On Defense vs Offense in Mahjong.
One of the lessons that really upped my game was understanding that mahjong is not a game about Winning, but rather about Not Losing.
When you win, you can either win big or small, so when someone shoots to win they will aim to win big.
When you lose, knowing that others will try to win big, the most likely outcome is losing big.
So, losing is usually very bad, and winning is uncommon and winning big even more uncommon.
The trick is to be able to identify when you can win big, and then take those chances (in a sane way).
