  • Riichi Mahjong is a game of chance, of hope, of plunging your soul into darkness to destroy your opponents...and it's free to play :)
Check out Mahjong Soul in your browser, on iOS, or on Android! My name is Yusong Liu, and this is a Let's Play series where we try to climb the ranks, have some banter, and chase those elusive Yakuman hands. Currently, we're playing in the Jade Room!

You might have encountered Riichi Mahjong in the Yakuza series, by watching the Akagi or Saki anime, or you might have seen your favorite VTubers from Hololive or Nijisanji playing. The rules are virtually identical whether you're playing in Yakuza, FFXIV, Mahjong Soul, Tenhou, or Riichi City.

I can't reach adept for several weeks. Everytime a player with a blond highschool girl appears next to me, I am keep losing. Does she have a hidden tech.
I get the feeling she insults me everytime she gets number 1. Calling me Kohai-kun or something.
I know Ko means small and Hai is German for Shark while kun is Finnish for when. Is she saying "when will Small Shark can win a game?"?
Also I keep getting a hand where I can't win after calling a bunch of tiles... As much I understand the game, the worse I get and in the process the less I understand.

You should try looking at Yu_song's mahjong tutorial, it cleared up a lot of things. I remember I kept getting into Furiten (a state where you can't win except by drawing) and it kept frustrating me, but yu_song's tutorial helped a lot.
On a second note, you should consider each time whether to call Pon/Chi/Kan instead of doing it on instinct. This is because each hand needs a "yaku" (special criteria to meet) in order for the hand to be winnable. There are multiple "yaku," but i'll go over only 3. The first is calling Riichi, which is done when your hand is 1 tile away from complete (Tenpai), but cannot be done if you've called Pon/Chi/Kan. The second is by either having a triplet of a dragon tile or a prevalent wind (ex: 3 green dragons. Ex2: 3 East winds in the East round.) The third is "All Simples" where you can only have numbered tiles (ex: 3 of bamboo) and they cannot be 1's or 9's (aka terminals). Where am I going with this? Essentially, calling tiles means you cannot call Riichi, so the only way you can win is through a triplet of a relevant honor tile or through All Simples. What you probably got yourself into multiple times, is a situation where you've called a bunch of tiles, but you had a pair/sequence/triplet of an honor/terminal, so All Simples couldn't be achieved.
In short: Don't call Pon/Chi/Kan if you have a ton of terminal tiles and honors, unless you're willing to discard them. If you decide to call tiles, make sure to always discard your terminals and honors. However, if you've "opened" your hand already, and have a pair of a prevalent wind/dragon tile, be on the lookout to pon it.

@@No-fh5lz Ironically, that I what I am doing and I am able to Riichii a lot more often than usual.
Under normal circumstances I keep going for Dragon and My Seat/Prevelent Wind Tiles for points. Now I find myself often discarding them, even if I have a pair.
Still away from Adept because there is always an insane player that busts other players with massive wins.

@@M3rtyville There’s almost nothing you can do against players like that, so don’t try to. Let the other players deal into them. Just focus on yourself, look for mistakes you do each round, and try to keep them in mind. And, with a bit of luck, you may be finding yourself on the other end, somehow pulling together a Baiman and sending a poor soul into 4th place.
