Charlie Hodge also wore a mask for the Habs..It was crafted from stainless steel rebar and dipped in vinyl...It had pads across the forehead and on the cheeks and chin..it was rather heavy, but served its purpose...
Interesting video. I've lived in Montreal all my life and remember seeing the Gump at the Forum without a mask (I was also there at the Forum when the Habs and the Flyers had a total brawl before a play-off game -- right after the warn-up period; but that's another story). I remember Michel Plasse's mask exploding on his face when he took a slap-shot there. At the time, I had a mask similar to the one worn by Wayne Thomas, but I gave mine a gnarly paint job. Both those masks were designed by Jacques *Plante* (not plant! and you got it right the first and last time... WTF!) I also remember Jacques Plante goal tending on a tiny ice rink at Expo 67 Canadian's pavilion (remember the upside down pyramid?). People were handed hockey stick and invited to take a shot. I was seven years old, so when I came to shoot, Mr Plante stood behind the net and reached over the top to hold his stick on the ice in front of the goal. And damn, he stopped my shot with a big wide grin on his face; he wasn't wearing a mask... Jacques Plante was sort of an idol of mine in the 70s, and I learned from one of his books about the better ways be a goalie, at a time when gloves and pads were made of leather and filled with horsehair, and which had to hang and dry for many hours. I was crazy enough to stand before flying pucks in ridiculously inadequate equipment when compared to today's equipment. You also forgot to mention the inventor of the butterfly style of goal tending, adopted by pretty much all goalies these days and introduced by Tony Esposito, who started his NHL career with the Habs before being traded to the Black Hawks; and whose style was also mentioned and analyzed in Mr Plante's book.
I still pay tribute to Gerry by putting stitches on my mask. The Refs remember , the kids ask why. I have to tell them of the tribute!! By the way I would have been cut for every one that is on my mask.
