Oh my Gosh! What a blast from the past this is for me! I wore those same pads: the GP 59 L's and I wore that EXACT same chest pad! I remember it well. I wore the same blocker: the GM 12 and I had the glove shown here, but finished my career with the GM 21 catching glove. That mask shown is not the Jason mask. Jason's was a replica of a Mylek street hockey mask. The mask in this video actually looks pretty high quality, like what Jim Craig and Gilles Gilbert wore, but those were custom fitted fiberglass. The one shown here may have been a mass produced mask, like the Jaques Plante style masks they made. I had one custom fitted to my face for the whopping price of A HUNDRED BUCKS! That wasn't cheap in 1978! It looked like what Bernie Parent wore. Ah the good old days! I played High School football, ran track in and after High School at a higher level, played in baseball leagues and even had some fun amateur boxing. I loved playing sports but hockey was always my favorite. I was a goalie until my 20's and then took my athletic abilities outside the nets and played in some men's leagues until my 30's when an injury "retired" me. If I could stay young for a thousand years, I'd never stop playing hockey.
GP 59's were from around 1978. I had a pair with the Cooper logo up to the knee and were new in '75. That is exactly the stuff I wore except I had a Northland stick. Those pads are in good shape--just need some neatsfoot oil.
We used to call it "the Waffle". To this day, I don't know why Cooper put the holes in the foam/nylon facing. And the plastic sheet behind it would always crack in half. Some guys would heat it and bend it so you could get your paddle on the ice. I would have loved to had the GP95 pads, but had GP59's (needed 59L!), and for the blocker I had a GM9, catcher was a GM6 (used to belong to Doug Favell (Flyers/Leafs). That's the only piece of gear I still have, although it's moldy. My chest protector was like the one he showed, but without shoulder protection, and before I had the SA 95s, my arm guards were quilted cloth with little pockets to put in pieces of foam rubber for the bicep and forearm protection. Every time I'd take a puck to the arm, it would go numb for about 20 seconds or so. That's why, if you watch the old days, the goalies would often stop the puck, it would fall to the ice, and then they would drop and cover it. You needed that time to get feeling back. I broke my finger in warmups once, and couldn't close my catching glove ("Trapper" in the lingo) the entire game. I would just stick out the glove, and when the puck dropped, I would drop my stick and grab the puck with my blocker glove. I had to get surgery and pins put in my finger two days later.
I remember using gear just like that... my best friend was the goalie for 3 different youth teams... the pads and gloves worked quite well... the chest protectors?????Well, lets just say many went and bought 2-3 catcher chest protectors and wore ALL OF THEM at the same time.. and they worked well... with a sears catalog stuffed behind them...
I still have my Higgins mask from 1968. It’s more like Gerry Cheevers’ mask with no forehead protection. Nice crack in it, too. All Cooper gear for me.. Still have the gloves. Mice got in to the rest. I’m 69 now..
Yeah, standup should come back. The butterfly is good to use here and there. But today, they keep getting beat up high in the corners. The mask is the same style Gil Gilbert. And the old goalie sticks were the best, made with good wood and wide shaft.
You played in squirts, as a child? I loke playing in squirts. Love the old goalie gear I have all my old stuff wish a kept every mask I had I do have my molded masks
Hey kid ( old goalie here ) that was all we had. We were stupid but had more balls than all of the goalies today. Extra large gear. you look like a bunch of Michelin men out there. If you were afraid to get hurt playing goal, you didn't belong on the ice.
Good for you, except in your day the shooters didn’t shoot nearly as hard. If you actually would go up against someone like Ovechkin or Chara, even in pro gear it’s gonna hurt if you get hit in the wrong spot. If you would be to wear this kind of gear against them, you would be lucky to be alive after the first shot.
@@WristFreeze97 puck is the same and players would shot top net from center ice si I think it was still kind of fast and hard on the slapshot department!
@@guygravel5119 But the sticks aren't. The way composite sticks flex allow for much harder shots. Facing modern NHL-caliber shots with that old gear wouldn't be pretty.
Sheesh ... that's not a "Jason" mask ... it's a version or variation of the mask that was worn by Rogie Vachon, Doug Favell, Ed Giacomin, etc. I was partial to Ken Dryden's, Tony Esposito's and Jacques Plante (with the Maple Leafs)
Looks a lot like my kit. Still have almost all of my stuff. I still use my Bauer Goalie skates if I take a turn around the rink. Back in the day there were two guys that made masks in the Boston area, Ernie Higgins and Paul Biando. When I started playing goal in the '60s you were a sissy if you wore a mask. I have the scars to prove it.
That's how you knew you stopped the puck - by how much pain there was! If it was a glancing blow, you might have had the pain and the biscuit in the basket, too. That always sucked. I had a puck hit me in the chest once, and because I was wider than the chest protector, it felt like the puck ripped my nipple off my chest! That, and when the puck would catch the edge of both thighs trying to go 5 hole, were the worst!

The blocker looks like a giant ice cream sandwich!

I’d have killed for Cooper gear back in the day. Those pads weigh a hell of a lot more than the nylon/foam pads we have now!!!

The chest protector looks like it has barely any padding at all and nothing on the arms! Goalies back in the days where true warriors.
I would still use them
Rock to die everything but the chest protector, I’d do the cage mod to the mask like Tony Esposito did.
My first forward gloves were just like the ones he showed. My helmet is a super cool Franklin Derek Sanderson model.
I had all that Cooper goalie gear and loved it. Lost it all in a fire.
Back in the day, in the 1960's and 70's, we thought that goalie equipment was really cool! Lol.
I have a pair of 70's Kenesky pads. Still the coolest pads in my book.
Colin, ask your Dad if his mask was made by Boston native Ernie Higgins! Thx!
Or Greg Harrison who had made some Higgins styles

what's so damn funny about the old gear?

frank quade wow man that’s so great that u probably completely fucked ur life to play hockey and show that you had “balls”
The excess equipment today is more of an edge in covering the goal than protection.

We wore those "players" glove in box lacrosse we cut the palms out to get a better grip on the stick.. fun video

It's an full head Ernie Higgins style.
Jason's mask is based on one of Jacques Plante's mass produced fibro sports masks

how much protection did the "jason masks" actually provide?
Hate to admit but it’s way cooler than today’s protective equipment 🤷🏻♂️
I still have my goalie stick from 1975.
Forgot to show the arm pads
That's what I started with , and yes it hurt some times. It was soposed to lol. Todays Snowflakes and a little pain don't mix 😁👍
I wore all of the same equipment. Back in the day, defensemen actually stayed back and helped their goalie. 0.

That looks like an original Ernie Higgins mask
Where are hid skates
That mask is a Higgins mask
Do your dad play hockey in the NHL
My name is cooper
Hi Colin. If you or your dad want to sell this nice vintage gear let me know. Very interested! Thanks! Guy Gravel
