- Gary Cheevers, Jim Rutherford, Brian Hayward and many more are displayed and discussed. Nothing is more intimidating than a goaltender with a great Hockey mask.

Doug Favell was the first to have a painted mask. When he was with the Flyers, on Halloween night ( 1968) his team mates painted his mask orange,( the Flyers uniforms has orange in their colors)
No, he was traded to Toronto to get the rights for Bernie Parent who DID play in the WHA( Phila. Blazers) to come back to the Flyers.
Big omissions Ken Dryden and Tony Esposito's mask, nothing flashy but definitely iconic and legendary.
Agreed. Especially Tony Esposito's mask. Wasn't flashy, but with his #35, you immediately knew who it was. Dryden's too. But, the guy was right on about THE most iconic mask ever: Gerry Cheevers' "stitches" mask will always be #1.
I like the old masks better. The caged masks aren't ass iconic to me.
Cheevers mask is so badass. Cool story behind it too.
The Tony Esposito 70's mask... no paint, but the first to incorporate a cage, albeit over the eye holes.
I thought Doug Favell was the first to paint his mask.
Gilles Vellemure & Cesare Maniago's masks were iconic & a tad spooky.... No artwork, white & off-putting nonetheless.
What about Bunny Laraques mask? Awesome and Intimidating
Mike Palmateers classic
Gary Dejardins - Sabres
Murray Bannermans Blackhawk mask - Sweet
Doug Favell -Rockies
Ed Staniowski - Blues (like Rutherfords but Blues logo)
Michel Dionne - Penguins "Bird Beak"
No one fucking cares
LOKISlog7
Good ones!
I also think Ken Drydens mask is pretty iconic!
And the voorhees mask, and the Cooper xl7 on the back of Crow t robot's head.
I think you mean Favell with Maple Leafs
to me sawchuk and plante should be on these lists due to them being why the mask caught on, plante was the first to wear one regularly, and sawchuk was the first to be issued a mask by his coach, those 2 events normalised the mask in hockey
Hockey goalie masks are the only piece of a uniform that the individual player gets to show off his creativity/personality in
The cujo bit is hard to watch.
Wicked Henderson I would have finished watching that part, but in my exasperation at the utter stupidity I accidentally smashed my head through my computer screen.
Yeah that was really rough!
I love you and Michael doing the hockey stories every now and then. keep it up!
"Nobody likes the Flyers", "They have cheated for years". Really? I understand that many people don't like them, but still, why hate on them? The video is about masks, not how the Flyers are dirty. I know it was something little, but it pisses me off to hear someone mouth off about my team, especially when the talk is bull-crap. Not raging, just standing up for my team.
Go flyers I'm a die hard Philadelphian
Fuck philly
Justin C FUCKING ROGHT BROTHER. GO BIRDS NEXT WEEK. SUPERBOWL 52 BABY YEAHHH
cuz they are a dirty rotten team ;) at least they used to be.
I hate the flyers, but I must admit I have long had an affection toward surly goalies, and Hextall was a great one! and I also saw the documentary about the Broad street bullies, and they were pretty cool!
These guys don't know shit. Favell was the first to paint his mask in October 1970. Rutherford painted his mask red the same season. The wings over the eyes mask didn't happen until about 1974.
the wings were often credited as the first "intricate artwork" on a mask , people assume that means first painted mask
@@kevinmorrice Never heard that before. Cheevers mask would be considered that before Rutherford's. Rutherford actually wore a simple red mask in an NHL game a few nights before Favell did in October 1970.
@@RicPhlare considering the story behind the cheevers mask, its not intricate artwork, its to do with him finding an excuse to skip practise and the coach got angry and drew the stitch on the mask, the wings is often considered the first intricate paintjob due to it being on purpose
jason mask should be number 1
i thought doug favells orange (pumpkin mask), was the first mask painted in the N.H.L.
cujo...the host didnt get it....its a stephen king novel.
Ed Belfour's eagle mask was is awesome
Tommy Glodo absolutely
Wow where is Drydens 1st mask and Tony Esposito ?
The first goaltender mask was a fiberglass fencing mask donned in February 1927 by Queen's University netminder Elizabeth Graham, mainly to protect her teeth.[1] In 1930, the first crude leather model of a mask (actually an American football "nose-guard") was worn by Clint Benedict to protect his broken nose.[2] After recovering from the injury, he abandoned the mask, never wearing one again in his career.
I
Please, we all know Jason has the greatest mask of all time.
That's a weird way to spell Casey Jones.
The California Golden Seals! YES! Don't forget the white skates!
Bromley also played for Buffalo. He played for the Winnipeg Jets in the WHA i think
I love the flyers
I found myself "ooooh"ing loudly and laughing every time they showed another mask. Awesome video.
no a single mention of Jacques Plante? lolwut
Hey, Where's Jason's Hockey Mask?
How do you make this list and not include Jimmy Craig's mask with the shamrocks?
dixie lou Carter cause it was dull
Jacques Plante first used the mask on November 1,1959 for the Montreal Canadiens and after that everyone wore one since that date.
No
Cool bit. One note: Jim Rutherford is not with the Red Wings organization. He is a GM elsewhere....I believe it's for Carolina, but I'm not 100% positive.
Doug Favell of the Flyer's was the FIRST to have a painted mask. His mask was painted a bright orange before a game on Holoween night. The trainer or players did it without him knowing until he showed up for the game
In an interview Favell said he asked his trainer to paint it. NHL players would never mess with a goalie's mask without his knowledge.
t was not until 1959 that a goaltender wore a mask full-time. On November 1, 1959, in a game between the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL), Canadiens goaltender Jacques Plante was struck in the face by a shot from Andy Bathgate. Plante had previously worn his mask in practice, but coach Toe Blake refused to permit him to wear it in a game, fearing it would inhibit his vision.
patrick roy's habs mask and ed belfours blackhaws masks are my favs.
Best goaltender ever - Dominic Hasek. And he had the most simple boring mask you could think of. Won a Gold Medal, 2002 Stanley Cup, and was good enough to get the 1999 Stanley Cup (ironically his future teammate, Brett Hull stole that game, never should have counted).
Gilles graton seen a picture of a tiger in a magazine for the idea he never read about it in the national geographic channel theres a video where he talks about how we thought of it
Stephane Fiset's Ice mask for the Nordiques was great.
Do they do Ken Dryden?
I like watching hockey but i wouldnt call my self a hardcore fan or anything, which means i always have questions about the sport.
So i was wondering, how come players are not wearing full face protection. Like if a puck flies into goalies face he has full facial protection but if a puck flies high and hits a player in the face his mouth area is still exposed under the visor?
+T'lan Imass they can wear it but its there decision if they want to or not usually when they have a facial injury like a broken nose they will use a full face mask to protect from breaking again
if they have a face injury (broken jaw, broken nose etc) they would have a full face mask, defenders usually have no face shield making look "tough".
Felix Potvin (Leafs) and Gilles Gratton (Rangers) have my 2 favourite masks of all time.
Eddie " the eagle " Belfour !
For one his name is Gerry Cheevers I grew up in Boston in the 70s when he played . I played goalie for my high school team . I had a mask like Cheevers with all the stich marks on it. I never got hit in the face once but I wanted to be cool like him.
what About pekka rinne
Great segment guys. And yes, I agree with the current top comment, Michael should definitely do sports every time.
Not true was a goalie named Clint Benedict
Why do we have to fight about who's the better host? I love listen to Michael talk about hockey and even though I don't know a thing about football, I enjoy listening to Ben's cynicism and sarcasm.
Good thing this is a list of Best Cups of All-Time.
wheres jasons mask?
How do you spell that jyl graton guys name correctly
His first name is spelled, "Gilles."
Thanks
Wild_Gaming Sure, no problem :)
where's olaf kolzig aka godzilla
The flyers have the best fans in hockey period and they by far have the most presence in any arena home or away. the flyers are just the thorn in everybodies side that wont go away and thats why people hate us so much. regardless, were a good team with lots of heart and we never give up and we upset good teams all season
These guys from tyt sports made many errors Jim Neilson was not from Alaska he was not an Eskimo . Jim was Cree from Saskatewan .
The older hosts sure knows his hockey, but he's off on Dennis Maruk. Maruk was a little, stocky guy that could score, but Lenny Frig was their enforcer for their first year in Cleveland, and after he left, Randy Holt took over. Bob Stewart was a rough player for a couple of years on those Cleveland teams (only lasted 2 years, before they were "contracted" Into Minnesota's team, the North Stars). Maruk was a young guy when he was with Cleveland, and he became a great scorer with the Capitals, and he wasn't the enforcer there, either. Randy Holt played with Maruk for a couple of years in Washington, and the years that Holt wasn't there, the enforcer on the Caps team was Gord Lane & Paul Mulvey. Ryan Walter, later of Montreal got into a few scrapes as a young guy with the Caps, as well.
No Tony O?
@xXRazorSharp101Xx isn't*
@ypsidan04 GOAT is roy. Hasek had the wildest style
Wrong it was a guy named Clint Benadict
Clint wore a black leather mask for a broken nose, it blocked his vision, he didn't wear it long. It was the FIRST mask ever. Wasn't a full mask just cover his forehead and nose
Michael was GREAT, knows his stuff.
I did not know that Michael's brain compendium included an encyclopedic knowledge of sports. We need to do tea/coffee.
Rick really shows his youth in this one by not knowing that the name Cujo will always be synonymous with the Stephen King novel. Not a dig on him, just an age thing.
I've always liked Curtis Joseph's mask, but of course Gerry Cheevers was my fav.
0:20 that’s my relative right there
@BrotherAlpha It is after all. Decembeard. I just don't if i'll have to shave before manuary
Today rick realized micheal shore knows everything
@bunkmasterflex The dude is incredibly knowledgeable, I will say that!
-Rick
i really wanna some masks
But i cant got it,cuz its not buy here in my country
Sucks
I.like ken Dryden iconic pretzel mask it was so cool and even somewhat intimidating.
Jim Rutherford was not the Wings GM
REALLY?! not one dan bouchard mask?
Felix Potvin is one of my favs
Doug Favell first goalie to paint a mask
broomly played for Winnipeg and canucks
Gilles Gratton Tiger mask -which I never saw play - THAT was a great mask!
The host had at least 12 mistakes. Eddy G of the Rangers did paint his mask at the end of his career.
So painful yet educational to watch
Gilles Gratton's mask is a Tiger mask.
Tim Thomas's mask was good but Tuukka Rasks is amazing
Steve masons mask is my favorite mask of all time
No love for billy smith?
Patrick Lalime's was always my favourite.
Where's my hockey mask? Really... Where is it.
Best mask is Philly's Bernie Parent's
Maruk an enforcer? Where'd they get these clowns?
Patrick Roy for the most uncomfortable mask
I love Ken Dryden's mask the best lol
sorry but any list of best hockey masks should always include plante, because he is THE REASON MASKS WERE POPULARISED IN HOCKEY
Clearly Cujo was playing for Toronto.
I would of included Ken Dryden
Ed Blefour & of course, Doug Favell!
jacques plante wasnt the first one to wear a mask, but he was the first one to wear a mask regularly.
No, he was the first to wear one
Def Albino I'm pretty sure that Clint Benedict was the very first goalie to wear one in the NHL:
Alex Kohl well, youre wrong
Nah, I know I'm right because I did a project on the evolution of goalie masks a few years ago. Clint Benedict had a leather facemask, and Plante had a fiberglass one.
Alex Kohl no
Old style hockey masks look way cooler than any of the newer designs and shapes on the hockey mask. Also anybody with a animal on their hockey mask IT DOES NOT LOOK COOL. Ben is way more interesting and has way more on camera personality than Michael Shore.Ben also is a compulsive gambler (LOSER) which always brightens up my day when I see him.
Jim Rutherford the GM of Detroit??
I guess thats news to Ken Holland...
Lmao
pekka rinne mask and brodeur devil mask and my favorite tuukka rask
i love the texting ...
@Leafs4Lyfe You're a fellow Leafs fan so I don't wanna argue with you (Go Leafs!), but you can't be upset...I love The Cat, he was awesome when he played here, but you can't expect them to name some goalies you thought had cool masks!
Don't forget Eddie Belfour my fav goalie
Felix Potvin all the way - second version
why do hockey masks have holes?
It be ungodly hot without them, its hot enough with then
Mike Richter had a great mask. My personal favorite
as a Caps fan i did like his mask too. always a pleasure to see Lady Liberty on his mask.
3:43 the guy on the right needs to be kicked in the balls to make restitution for this part of the conversation. Absolutely clueless.
I painted the stitches on my mask everywhere I get hit
I keep a sharpie in my bag lol
It's official. I will click on anything hockey.
I always liked KEN DRYDEN'S mask.. (red, white & Blue)
Yeah, instead they prefer that shitty rangers player and that Seals player who was on the worst team ever assembled. Ken Dryden by far!!
