It was more of a dumb ignorant jock mentality of being weak if you wore a mask. But if they had any intelligence a mask makes you a better goalie since you might shy away from saving a few shots if you're not wearing a mask.
@@joemckim1183 no it’s because shots didn’t go as high because of the sticks shots were usually below the neck area but occasionally the shots would go higher
I think that when Michael Bay rebooted the TMNT franchise, Casey Jones should've been wearing an early 90's mask the some eyeblack warpaint. Sort of like using eyeblack as contour makeup, but making the eyes look more sunken in, and the angles of the face sharp AF
I get hockey is suppose to be for tough guys, but having a helmet and face protection on at all times for every player just makes sense in the long term.
Players werent typically going top shelf because their blades we're so flat, so they didn't have to take many high shots until things started changing.
Warwick made my mask when i played pro I had a custom Stone Cold Steve Austin helmet. Great product and got many complements on it. Stu Gould from Good as Gould goalie school told us about Warwick. Loved that helmet!
I played a ton of street hockey. I lived through it. From no mask to now. For us the biggest evolution in mask came from that yellowish bird mask to the Tony Esposito model. We had a full team that played other neighborhoods. We were very good but only had subs. We eventually played a team that had THREE FREAK'N lines. They killed us.
Because it lessened the chance of serious injury or death. If they still used those vintage hockey masks then at least one death would have already happened.
It's pretty interesting to see what all goes into making a goalie mask as well as the backstory of why Jaques Plante started wearing a facemask during the games Getting hit in the face by a hockey puck, especially considering that they're made of vulcanized rubber, which is hard enough before it's frozen for several hours prior to any hockey game They freeze the pucks because it reduces the friction between the puck so they glide easier on the ice
I once asked the late Al Rollins about playing between the pipes with no mask, he replied "the fewer stitches stitches i got in a year, the better it was!"
I'm amazed at how long the 70s 'birdcage' design has been in use. I remember getting my first one from K-Mart. It came with some hardware to mount on a CCM helmet. Ended up losing 3 front teeth when it got kocked off and took a hard shot right in the mouth before the whistle blew. Good times.
From a scientific and physics point of view the masks should have a nasal bridge down the middle and the eye portions can be slightly wider if you put a plastic sheet across it, that'd also protect the eyes completely. Something like a shatterproof plastic, or that stuff racecars use for windows would work. I think they sell something like that called a 'hybrid' cage and visor, but they're all very substandard so far.
I think the first player to wear a goalie mask was Clint Benedict in the early 1930's. But he only wore it due to injury and after he was healed stopped wearing it. Plante gets the credit but Benedict should also share in the accolades on this issue.
....goalie masks/gear isn't cheap. shit, my mask alone was close to 200... .and thats just a certified black bauer. i'm not even going to talk about my custom painted mask... 1k for a pro style mask isn't bad per say.
With todays technology you could go back to the old goalie masks with no cages, would be cool to see the ken Dryden style or Murray bannerman type mask back in the nhl. They look way better im sure you could design them safe with kevlar etc...
It's amazing at this point... in 2020... That the hockey goalie mask is most closely associated with Friday The 13th's Jason Voorhees, and not any actual hockey goalie. Hahaha.
Wow, this is crazy, you'd think being put in a position where solid fast moving objects are coming at your face, some form of protection would be common sense. Also to wear one during practice but not games is weird.

Jason Voorhees takes the old masks into the modern times.
Jason Voorhees made the old style hockey mask iconic
Man the NHL in the 50 & 60s were like, "Oh an average of an 80 mph slap shot
This goalie will be fine without a mask
They didn't shoot pucks that fast back then lol

It wasn't until the early 80s before the skaters in hockey started to wear helmets and years after that before any of them started to wear visors

The Danby sketch had me clicking this video immediately. That image has some cool history behind it. Apparently Wayne

I think Vladislav Tretiak and his great goaltending against Team Canada in 1972 spurred the introduction of metal cages.

They would get scratched and marked too quickly, not to mention they would also fog up sometimes. Visors are ok for players but defo not for goalies.

Jacques Plante was not the first NHL goalie to wear a mask, it was Clint Benedict somewhere in the 1920's or 30's.
Plante was the first to use a mask regularly.

You should tell the NHL so they can change all their information....

And Charlie Rayner wore one in the forties. Both he and Benedict only wore the mask to temporarily protect an injury.
