I have watched Bryan's journey with that boat from the beginning, I was more than a little disappointed when he stopped posting videos about working on it. I don't think he was as particular about perfection as Mads is, but he did a pretty good job on the stuff he was working on. This is great news!
Actually, while there is more physical room in a cat they are extremely sensitive to weight. Mads is going to need to learn minimalism and will not be able to throw 7 tons of gadgets in that boat like he did with Athena.
Yesssss! Mads & Ava back in action! :) That boat really does need a good clearout to see exactly how to proceed, plus it's hazardous working in an area that cluttered.
Bryan did a good job fixing what he did. The next things left to do you are well aware of and no doubt capable of handling it. You know what you can afford and what you are willing to do. Best of luck for the purchase and if you buy it working on it.
Visited the Antarres boatyard in Buenos Aires last spring. Nice folks. Their boats are few and precious and absolutely safe and comfortable world cruisers. The boat needs your unique offering of skills and care. It will emerge better than ever and return the favour for a long time.
I for one, being a long time watcher of "O Glorius Sanding, Glassing, Painting, Everything Mads and Ava". I am so stoked to get back to "work" every week making time out of my less than busy retired guy day to watch another transformation. Just excited. I think about when this project will float.... I will be um... lets say taking full social security, hopefully putting less than seventy fricking candles on the birthday cake I never get from my beautiful bride of a badgillion years, but finally, still sailing, golfing, and RVing around the great country. Oh and I will finally be able to send Mads and occasional "doohickey thing" to make his life easier. Buckle up for Sail Life.
Construction and engineering of Antares is top tier, perhaps the best. Excellent resale value too. After watching you restore Athena, your next boat can appear just fine and I am convinced you would still take it down to its core and restore or upgrade everything. Everything! Go for it, if the price is right for a hull and deck.
@@flytoday So far as salvage history is concerned, doubtless. From a real world, practical standpoint, any part of a boat touched by Mads is better than when it left the factory. Athena is a paradigm example.
Hi Mads. You are absolutely the right man for this 🙂 You have got the skill and the experience needed for such a big project. You know what it will take regarding work, time and money and you also have the stamina to see it through! I really look forward to years of good project videos 🙂 Regards from Thorstein (the norwegian guy that visited you onbord Athena when it stood on land in Skive marina).
New subscriber here...I followed Brian working on fixing a hurricane damaged catamaran...and very happy to see you guys continuing the project. Big thank you. I am a retired seafarer and I have done some sailing...like being a crew member for 3 months on a tall ship. I have followed some youtubers fixing their boat too. Actually I prefer those channels.
Peter from Sailing Into Freedom spent a good deal of time discussing the importance of weight based on the design of the cat- those cats not designed to be a heavy floating palace require a minimalist lifestyle. Much depends of the design.
Bryan has done legit work on that Antari. I was hoping he would finish it. The last video he posted on it he said he was on the fence. I left message telling him to rock it. H was doing a good job fix the cat. It seems indeed for sale legit. If you get this I will be a happy camper! Do watch Bryan’s videos and watch his progress. He did do solid work on it and did look forward to his progress. Stay safe you two!
I'm all for another protracted session of 'oh glorious sanding' though I'm not a big fan of cats... in a perfect world there is a lonely 60' Swan that needs some Sail Life
Agreed don't like cats personally, but that's ok it's there boat, I'll happily watch him give another dilapidated boat new life. So much easier than doing my own boat
Don’t bring the whole cat vs. mono debate into this. Personally I am a fan of cats but I thoroughly enjoyed watching them transform their present boat. Looking forward to watching them restore their choice into a new life!
Cats are funny… so divisive. I prefer the sailing channels with older monohulls. And my next boat will probably be an older monohull. But if I had the money I would buy a cat… BUT they are insanely overpriced and trendy which means the mono market is filled with amazing boats at realistic prices. It’s a tricky one. i sailed and raced both… a lot depends on conditions… cats are miserable in a light wind.
You are going to want more opening windows in the front of that greenhouse. Also from experience. You may want to plan how those curved fixed windows can be best replaced.
I can't imagine anyone else taking on that project and Bryan has a new boat and a lot of overhead with this boat. Taking it off his hands is a deal. If it were my boat I would give it to you and thank you for cleaning up the mess and storage cost. Good luck!
The only other person who could do it, is the professional boat-builder from "Magic Carpet". He spend 4 years rebuilding (not refit) a boat which was dropped by a crane. AFAIK, his name is "Aladino" and his wife is "Maya"
You are now married, happily so it appears. You will need 100% buy in from Ava. You have learned so much from previous rebuilds, but you’d be putting both of your lives on hold for an extended period of time. You were spot on with the comment happy wife happy life. You will tackle your next project as a couple, and your relationship is far more valuable than a boat. Good luck.
100% - you dont get the time back - he has already fried 5+ years with the current yacht - and folks they all end up in the tip at some stage. @ their stage of life - yeah - nah. your time is way too costly.
First thought was you’re nuts, even if you get it for free it’s bound to cost well over $100k for supplies alone let alone labor to get her back in shape. Then I checked prices - a 2017 Antares PDQ recently sold with asking price of $850,000… so maybe not so nuts?
This is a project that you will have fun with. Your experience makes it the perfect challenge. You have touched all of the pros & cons well. Should not be too many surprises . Brian has done a lot of work & the offer should be respectful. My guess is somewhere between $25K & $50K , time line to re-float again, 3 years if working constantly, $75k budget. All the best in your endeavour. Rick
WOW, better you than me but then again you are Mad(s). I would think you should get the boat for $1.00 That is about the value. Nobody (very very few) will touch that boat as is. It is destined to be scrapped after it sits for a bunch more years. Re-built submerged saltwater engines....little value in the big picture. - We know you can do it, but get into it right. Or just head south after the next hurricane & have your choice of projects. I think I will buy stock in 3M (sandpaper) & Makita.
You are correct… a 44 Antares. I just watched Bryans last video and the patch work on the starboard side matches up. Quite a series of videos Bryan put together at @bryansailing on TH-cam.
Much of what I know about boat work I learned from your videos. Your channel gave me the courage and tools to tackle my own project, a complete and thorough refitting like Athena's. Now I look forward to setting sail with you on this exciting new adventure, to learn even more! :-) Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I can't think of anyone better to take up the torch from Bryan and complete this revival. You and he are at the opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of style but, as far as I can tell from Bryan's videos, completely aligned on quality of the finished product. I'm rooting for you!
If you want to cruise, walk away. If you want to just rebuild boats, this one could be the next one. Remember, you can make more money but you can't make more time.
I remember walking back to my apartment after returning from leave and finding your channel on the 5 mile walk. This was during the Obelix days and I became immediately engrossed in all your DIY projects. I'm crossing my fingers and looking foward to the rebuild!
One thing to remember keeping the cat on the hard in Florida is definitely not the same as in Denmark...you will need deep pockets to pay the yard fees.....in my opinion the cat is absolutely worth nothing.. ..the only value is the two engines maybe a couple of thousand dollars each......Bryan .( I used to like his videos very much).....something else to think about .... Bryan will have to pay several thousands of dollars to have the cat broken up and disposed of .....please don't make the same mistake as last time when you paid far to much for your last boat from Scotland.........Mads this cat is worth nothing....only the two engines bring some value........
Sometimes it can pay off to let the yard do some of the more tedious job, e.g. sanding or painting. That would make one a customer, so one could probably negotiate a much lower yard fee.
I agree, find another boat, one that is liveable while you repair/refit. And do you really need two boats, or are you planning to sell Athena after years of work?
You spent eight years rebuilding Athena into a very capable S/V, you will do no less with a cat!! If you & the Misses will be happy with it, make it so!!! 😁🤙
No...focus on monohulls. Maybe a Bob Perry, Alden, Ted Hood, Walter Schulz, Ted Brewer, or Chuck Paine design. Or a Stevens 49. Possibly a Kelly-Peterson KP44. Stick with solid bluewater hulls.
Why though? Those are all old school money pits. Look at all the TH-camrs going to cats, not to mention the market. This is a project where the boat could actually increase in value compared to the amount of money he puts into it. The idea that your boat needs to be a tank to be seaworthy is outdated.
@@viva5724 What are you talking about. You have zero clue. Look at the value of Valiant 40s. Passport 40s, Tayana 52s. They never go down in value. Cats are complete money pits that do nothing but go down in value.

I have watched Bryan's journey with that boat from the beginning, I was more than a little disappointed when he stopped posting videos about working on it. I don't think he was as particular about perfection as Mads is, but he did a pretty good job on the stuff he was working on. This is great news!
A catamaran is just up your alley, you can put way more gadgets in here ;-)
Actually, while there is more physical room in a cat they are extremely sensitive to weight. Mads is going to need to learn minimalism and will not be able to throw 7 tons of gadgets in that boat like he did with Athena.
Go for it! At a pretty low price hopefully! Can’t wait for the rebuild!
Yesssss! Mads & Ava back in action! :) That boat really does need a good clearout to see exactly how to proceed, plus it's hazardous working in an area that cluttered.
Bryan did a good job with his repairs. Hope you can finish it.
To an average person, I'd say RUN! But knowing your abilities and more importantly, your perseverance, I have no doubt you can do it.
Hurricane damaged boats will always be hurricane damaged boats regardless of brand
@@flytoday So far as salvage history is concerned, doubtless. From a real world, practical standpoint, any part of a boat touched by Mads is better than when it left the factory. Athena is a paradigm example.
Love watching you! Have been for years! My wife and I wanted to share an idea, find 3 project boats, and have your viewers vote!!
If the objective is to maximize fun and diy then this is a top contender for the next decade.
I'm so hyped by the catamaran ! Hope the paperwork will be fixed soon ! Good luck !
It is a proper round of work, but definitely also a proper boat when you are done. I believe in both of you.
Hi Mads. You are absolutely the right man for this 🙂 You have got the skill and the experience needed for such a big project. You know what it will take regarding work, time and money and you also have the stamina to see it through! I really look forward to years of good project videos 🙂
Regards from Thorstein (the norwegian guy that visited you onbord Athena when it stood on land in Skive marina).
The way your rubbing your hands together, gives it away.
Go for it.
Much depends of the design.
and Mads likes to put every unnecessary do hicky in as possible.
For all the no-danish viewers: this is called a HÅNDVÆRKERTILBUD 😅
But Mads and Ava can do it. And Saillife is a DIY project!
Good speed
Den skal bare have lidt maling, også bliver det mahogni med tiden. Men hvis der er nogen der kan, så er det Mads. 100%.
Ja en fixer-upper som de siger ovre i staterne.
Well I'm for sure down to watch a new refit!
Looks rough but it would give you content for the next decade. I say go for it!
Never run away. Always see the silver lining .
If you do, that would be an amazing project to follow 👍🏻
Aw man Athena is soooo nice. Back to the grind. I think the built in "carport" feature of a catamaran is for sure a bonus. Have fun!
@@edwardsnover4303 noones brought any debate into it. We've just stated personal preferences. People are allowed personal preferences.
Wow, you must be very confident if you take on this boat, wish you all the best
You are going to want more opening windows in the front of that greenhouse. Also from experience. You may want to plan how those curved fixed windows can be best replaced.
I think you can get a better deal with a less damages boat. One where the hull and rigging are intact and only the interior needs to be rebuilt.
Yes!!!!!
PDQ is an amazing boat from an amazing manufacturer and you can make any boat better and cool!
Figure out your offer. Then halve that. He either says no or negotiates up. Thats a ton of work, always blows out in cost as you know well.
I have watched Bryan working on his project boat, and hey it will be exciting to see you guys take it on
This is super exciting. Good luck.
First thought was you’re nuts, even if you get it for free it’s bound to cost well over $100k for supplies alone let alone labor to get her back in shape. Then I checked prices - a 2017 Antares PDQ recently sold with asking price of $850,000… so maybe not so nuts?
It also keep making you TH-cam for the next 10 years.. so buy it. Happy to watch another 10 years of sanding 🎉
You must enjoy sanding.
Not Makita, Mads is a Bosch fanboy.,
Sounds good. You have enough experience to know what you are getting into. Good luck. Russell from NZ
Is that Bryan's cat? I called it in the last videos comments 😅
You are correct… a 44 Antares. I just watched Bryans last video and the patch work on the starboard side matches up.
Quite a series of videos Bryan put together at @bryansailing on TH-cam.
@@johngreenlee7662 he was doing an interesting job, would love to see that finished
Thank you so much! That makes me so happy to hear :)
Every time he talks about doing another boat I get flashbacks of him tearing off Athena's toe rail...
It's just a little moisture in the core here and there...
Definate nope!
12:47... haha... Happy Sail Wife, Happy Sail Life. !!!
Good for you guys! Have been watching since day 1
Congratulations!!!!!
You spent eight years rebuilding Athena into a very capable S/V, you will do no less with a cat!!
If you & the Misses will be happy with it, make it so!!!
😁🤙
OH GLORIOUS!!!!! ...and now some of your us watchers can drop by to help with all that sanding!
@@SB-nt9fp every one of the boats you mentioned has gone down in value.
I watched rain work on this boat, seemed he was doing a decent job. Looks like a monumental task for sure
Never buy a catamaran with curved glass windows. The Wynns.
Why only cats? I would have thought that went for any boat
Agree, a curved window is a leak waiting to happen, and not the edible kind....
But Mad’s can easily deal with it, he’s much more experienced in DIY.
Eliminate the curved windows if they need replacement.
Mine never leaked in 5 years of ownership of the same boat.
