- The city of Royal Oak is one of Detroit's more prominent northern suburbs. Located in affluent Oakland County it is surrounded by other vibrant, suburban cities like Troy, Birmingham, Ferndale, Southfield, Beverly Hills, Berkley, Clawson, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge and Madison Heights.
Royal Oak has a large downtown core that features a wide variety of locally-owned eateries and retail shops. Beyond Royal Oak's downtown there is a large commercial strip that runs the length of Woodward Avenue (M-1) from 10 Mile Rd up to 14 Mile Rd. Royal Oak is the home of the Detroit Zoological Park and the flagship campus of William Beaumont Hospital. Most of the city's residents live in mature, immaculate neighborhoods of single-family homes that were built from the 1920s up to the 1950s. But as property values climb some old houses are being razed to make way for new homes.

Grew up in Royal in the 50s and 60s lived on Ferncliff off of Northwood blvd., only went to two schools growing up, Jane Addams and Kimball. Downtown was a vibrant business area with many shops, stores, and theaters. I moved to the Western suburbs in the early 70s, currently living in Milford, these days when I return im sorry to see what downtown has become, a inevitable out come with today's big box, and on line stores, it's happened in most small towns including Milford, boutiques and restaurants at now the mainstay of communities, and that is good, but I feel bad that todays generation won't be able to really enjoy the feeling of growing up in a small town.
I grew up on Ferncliff. 2224. Your name sounds familiar. But it's been a lot of years since then.

Glad to share! I was born in Royal Oak. Raised in Ferndale and Troy. The Detroit Metro area deserves far more exposure and praise.
Grew up in Royal Oak near Gardenia and Blair Avenue
Spent many summers in Royal oak as a child visiting my grandparents . They lived in a house on E 3rd street but my aunt and uncle lived on Gardenia. Their last name was Colwell. This was in the 60s and 70s and it was a small town then. I don’t even recognize it now, sadly.

@@fernandodanielgomezcarnero6789: That's right. Fictional "Royal Woods" is based on the real city of Royal Oak. It should also be noted that the city of Royal Oak borders the city of Huntington Woods. I'm guessing the name of the town on the show is a combination of those two. Both of them located among Detroit's northern suburbs.

Is the land flat there or hilly?
It's pretty flat. But farther the northwest you go it does get a little hilly.

And, to think: I absolutely despised & held in contempt Michigan & “most” of the people in it; for the first 18 years of my life (especially my “blood” family).
