  • Back in 2014 I began hosting a series of radio shows devoted to the music of Britain's leading songwiter and composer, Les Reed OBE. Les, writer of such celebrated hits like "Delilah" by Tom Jones, "The Last Waltz" (Engelbert Humperdinck), "Kiss Me Goodbye" (Petula Clark) and "There's A Kind Of Hush" (Herman's Hermits and The Carpenters), was most generous in his support amd feedback, both on Facebook and in telephone conversations.
In March 2016, having just completed recording a show for broadcast the following week, Les called and, during our chat, told me that April marked the 60th anniversary of his entry into the music business. I immediately decided to hold back the just completed show until May and create a new one in celebration of his diamond jubilee.
I was amazed at the speed with which I received responses from those I had invited to say a few words, and grateful for their kind comments and thoughts. The Jubilee edition became mine and Les's favourite of the 50 or so shows broadcast, and this year I have chosen to revive it as a pictorial TH-cam version, timing its upload to coincide with what would have been Les's 88th birthday on 24 July 2023.
Special thanks go to Les's daughter, Donna, his grandsons Ali and Dom, and sister, Celia, for providing permission to use their comments and include family photographs in the video. My thanks also to all the following music makers who telephoned, and emailed their contributions. Alphabetically they are: Alan Hawkshaw, Barry Mason, Connie Francis, Dec Cluskey, Denisa Stanislav, Geoff Stephens, Julie Rogers, Johnny Mathis, Kiki Dee, Patti Boulaye, Roger James, Tony Hatch, Valerie Masters and Vikki Carr.
The TH-cam link provided is for Part 1 of this hour-long show. Part 2 will be uploaded in a few days.
