    With this week's video, I've worked against my usual ethos of 'spicing up' a casting by making this Matchbox MB192 (Rover) Sterling markedly duller. I remove its 'My First Matchbox' brightly coloured paint scheme and return it to something much more subtle, recreating a period monochromatic executive saloon that the Rover 800 series was always meant to be!
    The name on the base of this model simply says 'Sterling.' It was purposefully done as this model had a worldwide release. The Sterling nameplate was used on the Rover 800 series given to the top-of-the-range models. When the car went to North America in 1987, it was sold under the brand name Sterling. It was sold there until 1991. Meanwhile in Europe and other global markets, it was sold from 1986 and had a 1991 facelift. The 800 series ran until 1999.
    The Matchbox model arrived in 1988 where it remained for just four years. It was one of the small number of models to receive the 'My First Matchbox' treatment in 1990, receiving brightly coloured paintwork and plastics, as well as tampos on almost every surface.

    Matchbox had some serious mundane-bangers in the 80s/90s . This, the Sierra XR4i, Astra, and even the Cavalier and Calibra in the 90s.. Then you had all the Tahoes, Expeditions, Grand Cherokees, and various pickups from the states. The Matchbox Gold and Matchbox Collectors lines are seriously underrated.
    I need to get this casting, and would totally be down for a “C*** P*** Partridge” Sterling custom.. I know he has an 800 but it would work!

    • @DieCastRestos
      @DieCastRestos  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I used to but I realised (after a bunch of viewers told me!) it looked awful on some less well cast lines as it had such a tendency to spread. I’ve never used the Tamiya panel line wash but I suspect it’d be similar. Now I only use the Citadel to run over lighting features and as a black wheel wash in restorations

    I believe that use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) as well as laser cameras (first Rover to go through this process) was a big part of the Rover 800 /Sterling development and I'm sure I remember reading that the data was shared with Matchbox. Hence why the diecast model is very well detailed for its scale and original price point.
    The engine layout/design on the bonnet of the before model is not to accurate to the real car. There is no big airbox on top and it's a horizontal not longitudinal engine set up. However battery, coil and fluid bottle locations are similar if not simplified for the children it was made for.

    • @DieCastRestos

    I too hated the cartoon-style toy cars as a kid. I especially hated the Matchbox Mini-Ha-Ha, with it's silly proportions and oversized helmet sticking out of the roof of the car. Horrifying. The 5-year old me even condemned it to be thoroughly crushed (or mercy-killed, as I then saw it ) with a rock... This Rover looked excellent in it's new mid-level executive look. Spot-on!
