I’ve always had a soft spot for trains. I like to take the slowest train possible that stops at all the counties, if not overnight. It’s fascinating hearing the accents of the passengers shift as I travel further away from home. Sometimes traveling is not about the destination but the journey!
G is for Gaotie(高铁/High speed rail) D is for Dongche(动车/Motor train) T is for Tekuai(特快/Very fast) K is for Kuaisu(快速/Fast) Z is for Zhida(直达/non-stop) And if there’s no letter at the beginning, that’s the slowest train.
".... the overnight train will save you money on the hotel for the evening." Holy shit, I can't believe I never thought of it that way, quite a money saver indeed.
the catch is you would have to share your cabin with three other people if you travel solo.. So if you are travelling in a party of four, than soft sleeper would be a great deal
And I used the slow trian like 10 years ago, from Zhengzhou to Urumqi, I spent three days and two nights on it and it took me across 3400km, or 2112.6 miles railroads. The price was pretty affordable, I have to admit. Now if you want to go to Urumqi from Zhengzhou, you still gonna to spend as long as 30 hrs, cauz the high speed railroad haven't been finished yet. But of course, you can choose to take plane which only takes 4 hrs.
In fact, the "slow" train (“绿皮车” or green-compartment train) has similar speed with Amtrak, but just in China, passenger trains have higher priority than freight trains so the trains seldom delay, while in US, freight trains have higher priority so Amtrak trains often delay and seem to be much slower
Hong Kong is also a city in China that attracted a lot of tourists in the past, but there have been too many violent protests in Hong Kong recently. Tourists are not recommended to stay in Hong Kong. I personally recommend transiting through Hong Kong to Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Guangzhou (cities in Guangdong province). There is a high-speed railway. Tourists can travel from Hong Kong International Airport to Kowloon Station by Airport Express (this is a fast train but not the high-speed railway the media refers to), and then walk along a covered footbridge with good signage to the Hong Kong West Kowloon Station, which is the high-speed railway station. There are always sufficient seats on high-speed railway trains, so there is no need to reserve in advance. I recommend travelling by High Speed Rail to Futian Station which is in the CBD of Shenzhen.

Overall, a very informative, handy video for all the travelers in China!! If I may add more, there's an easy way to tell which train is the actual high-speed train by only looking the initial letter of the train number, e.g. G666. "G" stands for a high-speed train, which can usually go up to 300 - 350km/h depending on the specific route. If. e.g. D666, "D" means it's also a high-speed train, but with lower speed, usually 200km- 250km. Its price is much cheaper than G trains. If you don't mind being late for a few minutes, D trains are preferable. However, noted that D trains have only a few routes right now. They're largely replaced by G trains. If, e.g. T666, "T" means "very high-speed train", but aware, it was developed before any D or G trains, so back in that time, T" was considered very high speed, but actually, it's only 160km or so. If, e.g. Z666, "Z" means it's a direct/non-stop route, with fewer stops, and links large cities. If. e.g. K666, "K" means it's a fast train, likewise, this' s kind of train was developed way back than G or D trains. Usually, it can only go up to 100-120km/h, and, most of the time. it's the "Green Skin Train". The last kind, e.g. 666, without any initial letter, it stands for a slow train. 80 -100 km/h and with many stops in the rural area.
The characters at the beginning of the train no. are actually the pronunciations (pinyin) of train types. G means 1st level high-speed train (Gao Tie 高铁) D means 2nd level high-speed train (Dong Che 动车) T means special fast (Te Kuai 特快) K means fast (Kuai Che 快车) Z means direct (Zhi Da 直达) For sharing.
My wife and inlaws always take slower sleeper train to do overnight trip, but for me it's hard to fall sleep in a train, I take high speed for same trip that just take hours instead of one whole evening and night.
I think it depends on which suits your journey better. I agree I did find it a little strange. I think it was the feeling of travelling sideways made me not sleep so good.
Great video . There are dining cars on some of the slow trains. I spend a late afternoon into the evening in a dining car from Tongliao to Siping in Jilin province and and the food was quite passable. Also any travel 2,000km or more in China flying is the better option. The airports are very modern clean and outside the busy periods not that crowded.
Very nice video, very informative. I was in China last year and was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the "slow train" is. Sometimes I'd prefer to take an overnight train to my destination due to schedule, and the "slow train" worked out perfect. I'm using quotation mark because the "slow train" is not slow!
Nico i think there is a time limit on when you can place your order, the food is normally ready 5 mins before the train arrives, and it will be delivered to your seat by a train personal. So I guess maybe give a try, hope you enjoy your time in China.
Yes, I always order my food at the same time when I book my high speed train tickets. It's always better and cheaper than the food on the train. You have a whole variety of choices from Chinese to KFC/McDonald's and I even saw Pizza Hut on the list once. The selection is different on the route/train.
If you have the money... high speed is the best, no doubt! I had a trip from Chengdu to Beijing in 7.5 hours first class.. Just a few movies and the trip was over :)
@@victort.248 hahaha well I do agree with you, that is better, but sometimes travelling overnight can maximise your time somewhere if you don't have long.
Thank you for sharing all this information! I just watched all your china videos and they are so helpful. I’m flying to China next week and I will be taking one slow train and one bullet train. Do you know if it’s ok to take a big suitcase? I only saw small suitcases in your video and got a bit worried haha!
Aw thanks I'm pleased you found them helpful! That's awesome where will you be going in China? The bullet train is fine there is lots of room at the front and the back of each carriage. The slow train is a bit more compact, you should be able to put your case underneath the bed or I guess it will have to be in the room so not quite as convenient but unfortunately, that's what you will have to do.
Nico thank you for the info! I hope it all works out :) I’m going to Beijing, Zhangjiajie, Changsha, Guilin, Yangshuo and Shanghai! I’m really excited to explore China! Are you currently living in Beijing?

hi Nico, I’m a foreigner too. Every time I visit china it’s an eye opening experience as things develop real fast. The people there seems positive and happy. But it seems that US and quite a number of countries portrayed china as a suppressed country where its people lived in fear and poverty. What do you think after been there? 😊
You can't always believe what you see in the media. The media controls your emotions about a country and depicts it a certain way. Until you travel to that country and see it with your own eyes you never really know. People have different experiences as well so no one will ever feel the same about a country.
The TV is actually controlled by the panel you can't understand. BTW if you book train tickets on Ctrip you will need to pay an extra 20 RMB/CNY booking fee I think.
If the distance is far, I choose the green leather train, because it is very cheap, about 0.06 yuan per kilometer, and when the distance is closer, I choose the high-speed rail, because it is extremely convenient, it takes only one hour to drive 300 km. The fare is 0.4 yuan per kilometer
There are a lot of different tiers so it's more accessible. There is a certain nostalgia about it. I think if I had the choice of wasting my day or night on the train though I would rather waste my night so I had more time to explore in the day.
@@Nicofilms Dangran, that's of course in Chinese, as I adequately put, I'm in love with you and your videos. You're so insightful, informative, and the videos have such a mellow atmosphere. What's not to like? I can't wait for your future videos.
Nice review, you gotta try the business class seats on the high-speed train in train, they are just like first-class seats on international flights. You also get slippers and snacks (for free).
Keep in mind it might be extremely difficult getting train tickets during Chinese holidays. As well, usually it is pretty noisy on trains with constant babble from the PA and uncontrolled kids. A seat reservation does not necessarily get you the seat you wanted, and the coach staff will usually not be helpful and try to keep out of disputes.
Nico, question for you. Do you find that it's inconvenient to carry a passport with you all the time while traveling? What do you do to make sure that it doesn't get lost...
Geez! Look at the cleanliness of the trains. Even the bathroom in the slow one is cleaner than that of the American train I took from Washington DC to NYC. Do you work or study in China now? Or you’re just traveling? Really like your videos.
There is space underneath the bed for larger cases and smaller ones you can fit above on a shelf. But there are 4 people in the room and so it can be a squeeze especially if they have luggage too.
These videos you made are great. If you make English and Chinese subtitles for your videos and upload them to Chinese video media, you will soon get a large number of Chinese fans.
Hi, I actually already have a Bilibili account where I have done this on a few films. Getting them subtitled takes some time so I'm releasing them on there slowly. Nico爱中国 :)
If the sleeper leave late evening and arrives early morning, then honestly no point spending 5+ hours on the G-train then pay for a night’s hotel. Unless you are on a business trip then never mind.
You plan to stay in China for long period? If so you'd better prepare some apps That would make your life convenient such as Alipay Wechat 饿了么or美团(a food delivery app) Didi(Like Uber)
The fastest train travelling within Hong Kong is the Airport Express running at about 150km/h and is not fast compared to many trains in mainland China. Trains in mainland China are all very fast.

I think the HST is excellent! For us The slow train worked well for this journey as it meant we could arrive in Xian first thing in the morning and have more time!
I prefer the slow train to travel to the far destination. the hard bed is more open than the soft bed, it's cheaper than the soft bed, where I can communicate with more passengers than the soft bed. if you are a foreigner and don't know Chinese, I suggest you buy a soft bed. But I really don't like the smell in the toilet of old and simple and crude style, the smell will be reduced after train running, this is the only one shortcoming of the slow train
I've been in the soft and hard bed and I agree as a foreigner I did feel more comfortable in the soft beds. Unfortunately toilets smell everywhere, they are certainly better on the high speed train though.
Nico just arrived last month. Been busy looking for schools for our 2 girls. Do you have WeChat? So far I like Tianjin. Maybe we can meet up some time😊
@@geapearl675 Oh yeah I can imagine its been a busy transition, hopefully you can get settled soon! That's great I think Tianjin is a perfect city for families. Yes, I do but I wouldn't want to put it on here I'm afraid.
O thank you that is so kind. I think it's because it has grown pretty rapidly. It was only on 4000 views yesterday so maybe people haven't had time to like haha
I've been on both trains in China, and believe me the bullet train is 100 times better, lots of space, comfortable and clean. The slow train was overnight, i was on the top of a three tier bedding system. We were drinking so I had to keep going to the toilet, a hole in the floor and quite dirty with urine. LOL
Well i'd prefer the slower ones as i really would like to take it easy....dine in,sleep or slumber while the train was moving and breakfast when you wake up...😂
I think if you have the time then the slow is a great option but I am really impressed but the high speed trains here they are much better than any train I've been on before.
No, normally the slow trains travel at 160 km/h. Only a few trains between Guangzhou and Shenzhen traveled at 180 km/h for example trains showing the possibility for different trains between these two cities. The trains of Type X2000 tilting trains (Pendolino in Italy) were borrowed from Sweden. These trains killed some workers because of their fast speed; workers were not adapted to the fast trains at this time.

绿皮车绝对最好,这是儿时回忆啊😊
It's very nostalgic for people.
Good video, nicely-shot and a considerate 👧
Thank you for watching, I'm pleased you liked it :)
0:46 Why do you need a passport to book a domestic train ticket?
Because it is your ID the tickets are linked to it. Now you can get E-Tickets and you just scan your passport instead of having physical tickets.
thanks for your share🥰
Thanks for watching!
Great video for people to take a look at real Chinese life!
Thank you for watching!
depends on what u want low income ppl can choose the slow ones cuz its really really cheap , and some scenes u can enjoy ona slow train
There are a lot of different tiers so it's more accessible. There is a certain nostalgia about it. I think if I had the choice of wasting my day or night on the train though I would rather waste my night so I had more time to explore in the day.
Oh yeah, nothing better than coming home and watching an amazing video from a beautiful, amazing woman. Wo ai Zhongguo!!!!
Aw thank you Zaylas. Did you like it?
@@Nicofilms Dangran, that's of course in Chinese, as I adequately put, I'm in love with you and your videos. You're so insightful, informative, and the videos have such a mellow atmosphere. What's not to like? I can't wait for your future videos.
@@zeldamachina6305 Aw thank you, that's awesome! Well, we will have another one out in a couple of weeks, watch this space!
@@Nicofilms I have notifications turned on, so I'm ready. By the way, how are you doing miss gorgeous?
Nice review, you gotta try the business class seats on the high-speed train in train, they are just like first-class seats on international flights. You also get slippers and snacks (for free).
I would love too, I'm not sure I can afford the upgrade though!
@@Nicofilms I tried it a few times on short high speed rail trips (less than 2 hours) so that the price gap wasn't too deep to swallow.
@@bobhuang2944 haha yeah I might have to try that!
Yes good point! It's very hard around public holidays to travel by train!
Hi Nico, can i know where did you get the BGM of your videos please? It sounds very good.
Hi, we get all of our music from Epidemic Sound :)
@@Nicofilms Thank you Nico! :)
@@benwang9401 No problem!
Nico, question for you. Do you find that it's inconvenient to carry a passport with you all the time while traveling? What do you do to make sure that it doesn't get lost...
我竟然把后面教老外订票得部分也给看完了!哈哈,感谢你分享!
wow...!i wish i could ride one of these trains...!
不错,拍的很好😂nice
Thank you for watching!
Geez! Look at the cleanliness of the trains. Even the bathroom in the slow one is cleaner than that of the American train I took from Washington DC to NYC. Do you work or study in China now? Or you’re just traveling? Really like your videos.
Thanks for watching I'm pleased you like my videos. I work in China I have been here for over 2 and a half years.
Nice vedio, thanks for the promo of the Chinese railway network. Best railway in the world, lol
Well, it's certainly the best I have been on!
As a Chinese, I only took the high-speed train from Shaoguan to Guangzhou once.😃
Thanks Nico for very informative video. You're funny British girl.
Thanks for watching!
How much space do you get on soft sleeper train for your luggages?
There is space underneath the bed for larger cases and smaller ones you can fit above on a shelf. But there are 4 people in the room and so it can be a squeeze especially if they have luggage too.
These videos you made are great. If you make English and Chinese subtitles for your videos and upload them to Chinese video media, you will soon get a large number of Chinese fans.
Hi, I actually already have a Bilibili account where I have done this on a few films. Getting them subtitled takes some time so I'm releasing them on there slowly. Nico爱中国 :)
Love your videos
Thanks!
I think I prefer the high speed train overall! Can't beat a speedy and smooth journey
I think I agree as it goes so fast, but I did like the style of the sleeper train a lot. To be honest both are better than the UK for sure!
If the sleeper leave late evening and arrives early morning, then honestly no point spending 5+ hours on the G-train then pay for a night’s hotel. Unless you are on a business trip then never mind.
I totally agree, if it can save you money on a hotel then its worth it, as you won't waste your day travelling like you might if you take the HST.
Welcome to China, you're so pretty and I like your channel 😁

Some tips:
It's better to hide the QR code on the ticket in order to keep your private information safe.
Not all the seats have a power socket.

Nico the public train in china is the best. Speed train awesome
YOU ROCK!!! :)
high quality video. like a movie.
Thank you very much!
The slow sleeper train still runs 160km/hour 😂
The fastest train travelling within Hong Kong is the Airport Express running at about 150km/h and is not fast compared to many trains in mainland China. Trains in mainland China are all very fast.
Peter Chan yay, maybe thats because China is a massive country haha
@@haohao7575 Just because they have the money to build and they care people's well being a lot . US is also a massive country.
shuang shuang yeh, tried of western government manipulating people by the emphasis the fear of communism while China doing more for their citizens, but west just being lazy to do anything.
@@haohao7575 China's current policy thoughts are more from our long history wisdom, less from CCP. good or bad, it is Chinese people's choice. if west constantly blame CCP for everything, they never know why China develop rapidly.
😂🤣 You can admire the lovely countryside!
Or some lovely grey walls!
For getting to the destination as soon as possible,I choose High speed train😉😊
I think the HST is excellent! For us The slow train worked well for this journey as it meant we could arrive in Xian first thing in the morning and have more time!
Wow,but I Don't like the Long time staying in train. To some degree,It's boring
@@muyun9525 haha yeah it certainly can be boring, but we were sleeping so it was ok haha
@Nico
😄
Nico I’d like take the slow train with the soft bed for travel, cause I can sleep there cheaper than hotel and comfortable and save time
I prefer the slow train to travel to the far destination. the hard bed is more open than the soft bed, it's cheaper than the soft bed, where I can communicate with more passengers than the soft bed. if you are a foreigner and don't know Chinese, I suggest you buy a soft bed.
@@Nicofilms yes, but i only feel the toilets smell near the toilet, other place is ok
@@Nicofilms BTW, i had already called the hotline 12306 to complain about this issue last week, they said they will improve it.LOL
The bullet train is so buttery smooth, I'm a big fan.

hahaha I like the nostalgic feel of it!
Awesome video as always Nico. We’re now in China. Trying to settle in Tianjin. Are you based in Beijing?
Thank you I'm pleased you liked it. Great, when did you arrive? How are you liking Tianjin? Yes I live in Beijing, it's so close!

Hi,Nico😂👍👍
Hi!
thirteen thousand people viewed, but six hundred people thumb up only, but, I decided to thumb up your video though, pretty awesome,go ahead.
O thank you that is so kind. I think it's because it has grown pretty rapidly. It was only on 4000 views yesterday so maybe people haven't had time to like haha
If train number is initiated with letter "G", like G99, you can be sure it is a highspeed train.
Thanks for the tip!
@@Nicofilms The numbering system in Chinese Railway is well explained here, www.vagabondjourney.com/what-chinese-train-numbers-mean/
G basically is 高
I've been on both trains in China, and believe me the bullet train is 100 times better, lots of space, comfortable and clean. The slow train was overnight, i was on the top of a three tier bedding system. We were drinking so I had to keep going to the toilet, a hole in the floor and quite dirty with urine. LOL
Well i'd prefer the slower ones as i really would like to take it easy....dine in,sleep or slumber while the train was moving and breakfast when you wake up...😂
I think if you have the time then the slow is a great option but I am really impressed but the high speed trains here they are much better than any train I've been on before.
wow speedy train❤
Yeah it's awesome and they are really nice inside!
I ve been on China's high speed train and Japan's Shinkansen, much more better than Canada's Via Rail.....
It's certainly the best train I've ever been on!
Via Rail is so Damn expensive and slow lol. 190 CAD for round trip between Toronto and Ottawa. And it takes 4 hours
@@lonelygod7276 damn right, I take the train from montreal to toronto, and it was 3 hours late.... sitting in the train station dying...
all good
Thanks!
It's not "slow" train girl, actually that one is even faster than many country's railway transportation. About 160km/h
haha it's slow compared to the high speed train
It's still called "Class Very Fast", isn't it? Start with Letter K
High speed train is better...if distance is too long, then by plane of course
I find the train a lot more relaxing then flights. The trains here in China are amazing!
The slow train in China travels at 180kmh. Faster than India alleged high speed trains. The high speed travels at 300-350kmh
The trains are pretty impressive here.
Welcome to China
Thank you!
Come in dubai nico..i will show you around...
Thank you for the offer if I do I will let you know!

Me too! I like them for different reasons.
You can order a takeout on a train and theyll deliver the food to you right at the next station.
I saw this, that is amazing I think I would be too anxious to do this I hate waiting for my takeaway haha
