So I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience driving this Tesla. Having spent 39 years in a technical work environment, I am no stranger to technology and I am very impressed with how well the menus and configurations of the many different options there are, have been developed by Tesla. Driving gas powered cars for 40 years, I’ll admit that there are a few things that take getting used to but I can attest to the fact that it did not take long. I really do like this car more than I anticipated. Hats off to Tesla, they have done a great job making these vehicles. Thanks for the test drive Mike, I’m happy that your choice of a vehicle will also benefit the environment.
My wife took my 93 year old father for a drive in our model 3, his frist canr was an old second hand Model T, even at 93 he loves and is amazed at the technology and really has the perspective to appreciates the jump forward Tesla have made.

@@MrDmadness That's a bit pedantic; the feature is named auto pilot, so the OP is using the term correctly. I just got my Model Y LR vehicle a couple weeks ago. My first drive home with my vehicle was quite an experience - I did do a small previous test drive. The weirdest unique feeling with the Model Y was using the single pedal driving. Instead of coasting like a gas vehicle when let up on the accel pedal, the model Y always wants to brake and slow down. So I had to cautiously come to a stop behind any vehicles at the stop lights. Did not use my brake pedal one time going home for the first time. Now after 2 weeks of driving, I am quite used to single pedal driving. Plus there so many features and options on a Tesla, and I am still learning some of them. I am retired from Motorla and currently 74 years old. So i have been around Technology all my life. Re regen braking: I typically control the slow down by easing the pressure on the accelerator pedal. This allows me to be in total control of the acceleration and deceleration with one foot. I don't take my foot off the pedal to slow down unless I'm on the expressway/highway and driving fast... in which case I'm usually hitting the brake like a normal car. It took me a few minutes to adjust but once I did, I was in love. I wish my Dad was alive to witness this technology. I think he would have loved it. This video was pleasant to watch. Thanks for sharing it
Yup, it takes practice to re-train muscle memory to not just "fully lift up", but modulate pressure on the accelerator for regen braking as well as accelerating. I kept it on Chill mode at first, as my untrained foot made it feel too "twitchy", like an eager bronco trying to jump into a gallop :) Now, once my foot fine-motor control is better :) , I am *amazed* at how smooth and fine Tesla made the controls work... mix of accel®en is just seamless, no jerking, even cruise-control stops in traffic are very smooth now. Just the coolest feeling to take it down curvy mountain roads w/ regen too, like infinite-speed low gear for both braking & power! But silent! Also best feeling to be zooming down a mountain pass/hill, at 70-75mph, but GAINING range back on regen!

I was 74 at the time and found the car very easy to drive. One pedal driving was also easy to get used to. The model 3 was too small of a cabin for me but the model Y was perfect. Then once I explained how much less maintenance would be involved, and how the brake pads last 100,000 miles, he would be asking me how to order one. 😂
The way I like to explain the throttle is as a speed selector. Press hard to accelerate, and modulate for the desired speed. For slowing down for stop signs and stuff, I usually gradually let off the throttle to slow at a more normal rate. Once you get used to it, it's really intuitive.
Yeah the one pedal braking is so confusing at first, I didn't even like it first few drives. But now that im used to it it just makes sense and driving is so smooth and effortless.
A friend of mine let me drive her BMW i3, which has pretty aggressive regenerative braking. I'd been reading about this for a long time and thought it would be a hard thing to learn to live with. Within about 15 minutes, it seemed normal. I had no problem at all with it.
I recently put 500 miles on the model 3. I had to learn all these things too. It’s amazing for sure. At 0-60 mph it’s faster than a Hellcat challenger.
I got my model 3 may 2019. I’ve driven over 80.000 km with it. It didn’t even have one pedal driving yet at that time but it’s one of my favorite features of the car apart from low maintenance, fuel costs and excellent performance. I have the LR AWD version so far without speed boost 😁. But one pedal driving is awesome! As is the car overall.
I learned so much about the car and its technology from this video. I was aware of the concepts but not the nuts and bolts of operation. I feel if I was to drive one I would at least have a clue on what to do. The rest would just need some time. Thank you.
Awesome video and review; 'butts in seats' is what sells a Tesla, not commercials. His initial reactions and thoughts are common and typical after they drive one. This IS the 'ultimate driving machine'; soon to be autonomous in the near future.
Regarding regen, when I allow people to test drive my car, I tell them that the car doesn’t coast. If you want to coast, you need to keep your foot on the pedal. It feels like you’re “feeding gas” but you’re not.
Feel free to make a series of "How to Tesla" videos so people can learn the vehicle more deeply. Maybe that would help with some people's anxiety... and give the rest of us something to learn until our current car outlives its financial benefit.
Driving a Tesla is definitely a next level experience. Virtually nothing to worry about, just drive to your destination. Been driving one for two years now and my main concern nowadays is where I'm at on my playlist! When merging, if I want to be first for safety reasons.....I just hit the go pedal and I'm first. No drama, no risk, no effort! You really can't help thinking of all the effort by the big automakers to keep this technology off the market. This tech virtually kills the automobile dealership model and every auto repair garage in the country because of the no maintenance aspects of EV ownership. They had electric vehicles from the beginning but greed won out and the public has been screwed for over a hundred years. If EV's had only been developed from the beginning, we would have a very different looking country. Yeah, it was that big a deal!
Incredible video. Your father is so cool, and very sharp fellow. Your dad picked up on all the little nuances of driving a Tesla for the first time. The big question, is he gonna buy one for his next car?
Hey Jim, thanks for checking out the video! I’m glad you liked it! He really was a natural. I was telling him after that he really should get one. He still has 2 years left on his current lease but he might be easily convinced at that time to go the EV route.
That what im about to comment, He looks smart, and sharp, very calm talk , seem like every words he spoke that he choose them very carefully, if im not mistaken, He is Jewish?
My son scheduled a test drive for myself and him about 3 years ago in a Model X and Model 3 when I came to visit him. I thought it was a lot of fun and just something to do while I was there. Fast forward to today and I have owned a Model 3 for 2+ years and couldn’t be happier. Sold some Tesla stock last year and enjoying the FSD beta I added on. My son is now waiting for me to ‘sell’ 😉 him my Model 3 and upgrade to a Model S. 😁
That’s a cool idea! I scheduled a test drive when my mom came to visit so she could see the car since my delivery got pushed back until 2 weeks after she was visiting. She enjoyed it too!
I just had a friend drive my Model Y and it was his first time as well. I think he didn't want to like it but he did. I always tell people who are curious to just go drive one and see for themselves.
Wait until you show your dad camp mode for sleeping or how you can precondition the interior remotely prior to driving off. These are some of the key bonuses of EVs. The future sure is exciting.
Good video. One minor issue...autopilot requires that you remain focused with 1 hand on the wheel in case you need to take control. The safer we Tesla drivers are, the better for everyone.
I am not young myself. But i love to see clips like this. He learned one pedal drive in just one try. You should tough him about voice commands. I love sending text via voice and call via phone. And btw did you know that if you want a special song played you just need to know some of the lyrics. Just say play and the lyrics you know and it finds it (most of the time) like an anti shazzam
I call the Tesla experience "effortless relaxing exhilaration"... drive is so smooth, relaxing, but also fast and fun! (tech too) You get used to regen braking very quickly, and fall in love with it... so much safer too, as it starts slowing as soon as you even THINK about slowing (subconsciously, your foot starts lifting)... and the steering and acceleration are equally as quick and responsive. Autopilot takes some time to get used to having the car in control, but is a HUGE game-changer for long roadtrips (and heavy traffic, mostly), so much more relaxing, less fatiguing, and safer to boot (as long as you keep eyes alert on the road.) Great drive!
Thank you for telling your dad about the scroll wheel to get rid of the autopilot nag, I accidentally did it yesterday and didn’t think anything of it until I just heard you tell your dad that that was a way to remove the nag, in my opinion that’s alot better that having to shake the wheel and sometimes accidentally turning off autopilot.
got my MY on Feb 14th 2023. same problem. I wish Tesla recall all MY and fix it at Service Center. And other rattling noises from the rear seat and headrests when extended on rough roads not on the freeway
Cool video! I was noticing how there were like no semi trucks on the road. Where I live, there are semi trucks everywhere on the interstate, in at least a two hour range in any direction.
The center mounted TV is a bit much and must cause a lot of eyes off the road situation, plus how can that beast of a screen not be a hazard for night driving? I last thought, what do you do if the screen suddenly goes dead?
Its really nice seeing my street on TH-cam screen, I can’t wait to get my model Y in March, maybe I can give a test drive to anyone that want the experience, just to win more souls for Tesla. lol
My phone holder is always at eye level (air vent mount) so I can look at the GPS. Tesla’s map position is tough for me to follow, so I turn on voice navigation
We have a 1st generation Leaf and have been test driving longer range EVs to replace our other car (Toyota estate). Drove a Model 3 last week. Search is over. For me, the M3 is the benchmark EV and iconic, and as I’m approaching old age want to have some fun.
Hey Mike! Quick Autopilot tip: instead of using the scroll wheels to trigger the attention alert, a single down tap on the right stalk will work as well and won’t adjust any settings in the car (volume or cc speed). Found this in another TH-cam review, and I’d have to say I definitely prefer it over the scroll wheel tip. Your dad gave an awesome reaction! Cheers!
@@MikeAmiel actually, the best way to remove the AP nag is to keep your hands on the wheel at all times. No one said that you have to take your hands off the wheel when you are on AP. It's much more annoying to have to reach over the scroll wheel if you have your hands on your lap. Also, with your hands relaxed on the wheel you get less nags. I almost never get the nag on stop and start traffic. Safer too.
Great video man! I love all electric cars! I have cerebral palsy I use a walker and wheelchair I’m saving up for my all electric Chevy Silverado or Tesla! Electric cars are better for your health Especially me with my cerebral palsy! Your dad did a awesome job
My dad would probably have liked one as he didn't really enjoy driving and always bought automatics, I'm looking forward to the day all cars are fully autonomous so I can get driven home from the pub😀
1. You don't have to use hold mode, you can set it to creep or roll like a normal gas car. But most drivers prefer hold mode. 2. You get used to hold mode within a day or two, and never want to go back. I've owned over 30 cars over the past 40 years. Only Teslas for the past 4 years. The Model 3 was the best thing I have ever owned. Not only the best car, the best thing. This is happening, whether anyone likes it or not.
I think a big problem with the Tesla Model 3 and Y is that the whole instrument panel design is just *TOO* different than a conventional ICE car. That's why on vehicles like the Volkswagen ID.4 and Hyundai IONIQ 5, the instrument panel is at least reasonably understandable to people transitioning over from an ICE car.
@@Handlethis342 For a younger generation, probably true. But for people like me totally used to conventional instrument panels, the transition could take a couple of weeks.
Yeah, I think having something close to a traditional Instrument cluster in the car showing speed and maybe battery life would make the car more approachable.. If you look at the Toyota Prius compared the the Corolla Hybrid having a more normal cluster behind the wheel makes the corolla feel more familiar.

Almost everything on the screen isn't to my preference. Many cold climates require quick access to heater and defrost controls while maintaining control on the road with reduced visibilty due to instant fogging. Does the car have autodefog setting?
I do wish that you could customize the location of the buttons on the bottom! I grew up in the northeast and definitely how important having a warm, defrosted car can be. The Tesla app has the ability of preconditioning the cabin and also turning on the defroster. Also, you can use the voice command “turn on front (or rear) defroster without taking your eyes off the road. It doesn’t have an auto-sensing defog feature like the auto-sensing wipers.
Hi, was it one padel driving. Please, show us foot pedals to make us understand basic controls. I drive manual transmission car and eager to know its acceleration function.
Yes it does! I’ve only had it happen once but if the car brakes hard in front of you, it will apply the brakes. It actually applied brakes faster than I could move my foot from accelerator to brakes. I was happily surprised.

People obsess over 2 things with a Model 3: The first being the speedometer display, and the second regen braking. I always tell people, "you would be used to in in 1 day."
Mike I see you live in south Florida. I am in palm beach. Is it possible to check out your mode 3. I ordered mine but Tesla showroom doesn’t have any that I can sit inside to feel the interior
I test drove a Model 3 a few months ago. Here are the pros and cons: Pros - quiet, accelerates smoothly and quickly, steering response is good, braking is good Cons - Fit and finish are poor, cheap looking interior components, rattles and squeaks, a few interior pieces by foot well literally fell off during test drive. Decision - Looking forward to testing EV's from high end manufactures like BMW (i4), Mercedes etc.
Its so confusing coming on youtube and seeing these rave reviews about these cars... every test drive I have ever done has made me more and more doubtful of these cars. Their details work is so much worse than even Kia in their early days...but to be honest in the long run im sure these cars probably wont hold up as well as a kia...and they are sold as luxury cars! I just dont get it man
@@mossbogger8366 I try to be as objective as possible when evaluating vehicles. I look for my own data...not fan websites. When i see Tesla's for sale in my area, I will contact the owner to ask why they are selling and have found out a lot. One guy had to replace two control arms after only 50000 km. Our local winters can get down to -40 C and a lot of owners told me they were selling because of how disappointed they were with performance in the winter. Others have had poor customer service experience such as having to wait two weeks for a wheel to come in that was damaged beyond repair when they hit a pothole. Yeah the one pedal braking is so confusing at first, I didn't even like it first few drives. But now that im used to it it just makes sense and driving is so smooth and effortless.
My driving habit is usually to let go off the gas and hover over brakes. Something that will be tough to change esp after driving like that for 7yrs.
@@siamimam2109 7 years is nothing. My dad just picked up his Model Y and figured it out pretty quick, and he's been driving for over 50 years
Your dad seems like a cool guy. Enjoy your time with him!
The car trip is cool and all the tutorial is informative but the coolest thing is your Dad and the connection between you two... Happy Holidays...
Thank you for watching! I appreciate those kind words!
I am a young just turn 70. I was a little scare watching your dad. But my next car will be a model 2. Thank you so much.
2019 i test drove a M3 and end up with a LR M3, we did not need an extra car but now we glad that we did.
That's a nice dad and son bonding
A friend of mine let me drive her BMW i3, which has pretty aggressive regenerative braking. I'd been reading about this for a long time and thought it would be a hard thing to learn to live with. Within about 15 minutes, it seemed normal. I had no problem at all with it.
Yeah, it's a very easy adjustment actually.
It’s a good feeling when you 1st drive a Tesla on the freeway of love.
This is the best intro to Tesla driving that I’ve seen. Many thanks to you and your dad for sharing this!
I learned so much about the car and its technology from this video. I was aware of the concepts but not the nuts and bolts of operation. I feel if I was to drive one I would at least have a clue on what to do. The rest would just need some time. Thank you.
Thanks for watching and your kind words! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
As an enthusiast who has never been able to drive a Tesla…I loved this video’s approach. Thank you.
Thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed it! If you have the ability to go test drive one, do it! It’s free and so much fun!
Awesome video and review; 'butts in seats' is what sells a Tesla, not commercials. His initial reactions and thoughts are common and typical after they drive one. This IS the 'ultimate driving machine'; soon to be autonomous in the near future.
I feel like the cameras should adjust the braking during regen braking depending if there is an object in front.
I think regenerative braking leads to better driving, as you tend to make nice and smooth stops by looking ahead more.
I got my MY today, and I picked up some good tips with this video. Thanks.
Will do!
I’ll have to do this with my parents. Should be very interesting.
Record it
“You done with the jokes?”😂😂 that’s what goes through my mind every time someone gets in my car and goes “it’s so loud” when I start driving
Hahaha !! I’ve never had someone say it was loud!
Cool dad. So clam & listen to advices.
That what im about to comment, He looks smart, and sharp, very calm talk , seem like every words he spoke that he choose them very carefully, if im not mistaken, He is Jewish?
your dads smile towards the end of drive
@@MikeAmiel Can't wait to see her driving it! 😁
@@mistyanderson6834 Oh that would be a great video!!! Next time she comes to visit…I am SO doing that !!
What a coincidence! I live in Davie, never expected to see a yt vid from my town, just stumbled upon this because I just ordered my Tesla!
Hey!! That’s awesome! Thanks for checking out the video! Maybe we’ll run into each other at the Plantation or Davie superchargers…
With the regenerative brakimg start with a hybrid to get the feel if you need to.
I just had a friend drive my Model Y and it was his first time as well. I think he didn't want to like it but he did. I always tell people who are curious to just go drive one and see for themselves.
I recommend this to people all the time! It’s so easy and simple to go do! I knew after about 60 seconds of driving I loved the car! It sells itself!
Wait until you show your dad camp mode for sleeping or how you can precondition the interior remotely prior to driving off. These are some of the key bonuses of EVs. The future sure is exciting.
Yeah I’ll make sure to remind him of this! He’d love that feature living in the northeastern states!
Cood Dad right there. Can tell he treated you well growing up. Can't say that for every dad unfortunately
Thank you! I am definitely lucky to have such a great dad! Glad you enjoyed the video too!
Saving on driving fatigue and lower back pain is a huge benefit to Regen braking. You should be keeping your hand on the wheel though...
I bet he would like the outside Speaker features, putting all his buddies on blast coming down the street
Good video. One minor issue...autopilot requires that you remain focused with 1 hand on the wheel in case you need to take control. The safer we Tesla drivers are, the better for everyone.
Autopilot == cruise control. Not much more really
(tech too)
You get used to regen braking very quickly, and fall in love with it... so much safer too, as it starts slowing as soon as you even THINK about slowing (subconsciously, your foot starts lifting)... and the steering and acceleration are equally as quick and responsive.
Autopilot takes some time to get used to having the car in control, but is a HUGE game-changer for long roadtrips (and heavy traffic, mostly), so much more relaxing, less fatiguing, and safer to boot (as long as you keep eyes alert on the road.)
Great drive!
One thing I learned is to use more of the right button / voice commands. Especially for things like wipers, glove box, and music requests!!
I definitely don’t use that feature enough! Gotta look into that. Thanks for the suggestion!
Haha you’re welcome! Yeah I thought it was quite annoying too. Thankfully that trick helps a lot.
Excellent video.
Dad is impressed.
Thank you!
got my MY on Feb 14th 2023. same problem. I wish Tesla recall all MY and fix it at Service Center. And other rattling noises from the rear seat and headrests when extended on rough roads not on the freeway
This is a dope video. I said to myself “hey that looks like Florida” then when he turned onto the on-ramp I was like “wait I know that on ramp”. 😂
very well done video and thanks to pop for not being an actor for the camera. was easy to show my mother that this is not a spaceship. thanks, guys
Cool video! I was noticing how there were like no semi trucks on the road. Where I live, there are semi trucks everywhere on the interstate, in at least a two hour range in any direction.
I didn't even notice that but there usually are a ton of trucks in this area. Guess he got lucky during his test drive!
My dad was always interested in new tech and I really wish he was here today trying out our Y. He would have loved it!
My Prius had REGEN but it still drove like a regular car (slight braking). TESLA regen is on a whole another level.
Mike, Blue Circle is cruise control to blue lines on the sides are autopilot
So cool to do that with your dad.
Love how dad thinks of safety and on the different style of driving. :)
I was able to test drive a Tesla and it does take some time to figure out new features. Kinda like switching from flip phone to smart phone.
So true! Great analogy! Lol
The center mounted TV is a bit much and must cause a lot of eyes off the road situation, plus how can that beast of a screen not be a hazard for night driving? I last thought, what do you do if the screen suddenly goes dead?
👍🏽nice, my Dad passed in January, he wanted one, 🥺😞 i wish he was still here to see mine that i just took delivery of🥺
I’m sorry for your loss! I’m sure your dad has taken a ride with you in it!
@@MikeAmiel ty😊
one correction. if you are on autopilot and nudge the wheel, it will just disengage the autopilot, but still keep the cruise control on.
Thanks for the real world practical review.
This actually very useful for me, who just ordered one! Also, I wish my dad was still around to show him a e car! :(
We have a 1st generation Leaf and have been test driving longer range EVs to replace our other car (Toyota estate).
Cheers!
Thank you for this tip!! I just tried this out today and it was def a great alternative! Thanks for watching!
Safer too.
Carlo, thanks for that tips. Just what I needed to hear.
I miss my dad. He would love the Tesla.
Great video on a Tesla, I really enjoyed watching. learned a lot as well.
Thank you for watching!
Great video man! I love all electric cars! I have cerebral palsy I use a walker and wheelchair I’m saving up for my all electric Chevy Silverado or Tesla! Electric cars are better for your health Especially me with my cerebral palsy! Your dad did a awesome job
Thanks for your kind words and for watching!
@@MikeAmiel you welcome
No one needs 500 mile range, it's more about your bladder. How long can you drive for?
My dad would probably have liked one as he didn't really enjoy driving and always bought automatics, I'm looking forward to the day all cars are fully autonomous so I can get driven home from the pub😀
Yeah that would be great! Soon enough that will be reality.
That's why on vehicles like the Volkswagen ID.4 and Hyundai IONIQ 5, the instrument panel is at least reasonably understandable to people transitioning over from an ICE car.
our family loves the screen and user interface on the model 3
Sacto, I wouldn’t refer to it as a problem.
@@Handlethis342 For a younger generation, probably true. But for people like me totally used to conventional instrument panels, the transition could take a couple of weeks.
@@Sacto1654, so it’s the drivers problem and not Tesla’s? I misread your initial comment then.
Yeah, I think having something close to a traditional Instrument cluster in the car showing speed and maybe battery life would make the car more approachable.. If you look at the Toyota Prius compared the the Corolla Hybrid having a more normal cluster behind the wheel makes the corolla feel more familiar.
GREAT VIDEO. RETIRED 77, USAF VET. WIFE HAS SILVER 2018 MODEL 3, WON'T LET ME DRIVE HER CAR. ORDERED CYBER TRUCK ON NOV 23, 2019 FOUR MOTOR , WAITED 25 MONTHS, JUST 16 MONTHS TO GO. STAINLESS STEEL BODY, TANK TURN, CRAB WALK, BULLET PROOF, 500 MILE RANGE.
I have seriously considered putting a deposit down on a cyber truck too! At $100 and refundable, it’s a win win!
so cute. when we were younger, they taught us. now we're older, we teach them
I really enjoyed the ride with you and your dad, one question can you change the color of the Tesla on the screen?
The color of the Tesla on the screen matches the color of your car. So if you get the red color, the car on the screen is red!
@@MikeAmiel Thanks
The rear view mirror "That's a manual adjustment." 🤣
after I saw the radio stations, I knew you were in south fl. Then I saw the fountains lol...
Haha good eye!!
Question: If you're driving manually and somebody breaks quickly in front of you will the car apply the breaks automatically to prevent a collision?
Yes it does! I’ve only had it happen once but if the car brakes hard in front of you, it will apply the brakes. It actually applied brakes faster than I could move my foot from accelerator to brakes. I was happily surprised.
That’s the best to convince people to switch to EVs. Get them to actually drive one.
Absolutely! My boss had a model S- I didn’t see the appeal until I drove it and have been obsessed since then.
Evs=/Tesla
😂😂😂😂😂😂 Hi Lauderhill/Tamarac Floridian. I'm watching the video, and I'm thinking hey that looks like Lauderhill or Tamarac. Right now I am in North Carolina sometime next year I'll be back in Florida. I wonder if I still have my Sunpass tranpsonder🤔
Haha yup it was right in that area and Plantation too!
Dad's "Tesla adjustment period" took how long? Was it a minute? Was it 40 seconds? Was it 15 minutes? No night school required then?
People obsess over 2 things with a Model 3: The first being the speedometer display, and the second regen braking. I always tell people, "you would be used to in in 1 day."
I've had 5 people come along to do test drives and they adjust by the end of the 30 minute session. Usually even halfway thru or earlier.
Random question, do the brake lights come on with regen braking to inform the cars driving behind you that you are slowing down?
Yes, they automatically come on with regen braking!
Mike I see you live in south Florida. I am in palm beach. Is it possible to check out your mode 3. I ordered mine but Tesla showroom doesn’t have any that I can sit inside to feel the interior
“Are you done with the jokes ? “ 😮
Lmaoo
I test drove a Model 3 a few months ago. Here are the pros and cons:
Pros - quiet, accelerates smoothly and quickly, steering response is good, braking is good
Cons - Fit and finish are poor, cheap looking interior components, rattles and squeaks,
a few interior pieces by foot well literally fell off during test drive.
I am a mechanical design engineer by training and think they still have a lot to learn about how to design cars properly.
"keeping us in the center pretty amazing" please show him some FSD 10.8
