    00:00 Introduction
Here's a summary with the main flaws Buildzoid covered.
    MSI
01:51 MSI Tomahawk (Only 5 USB Type A in Rear IO)
06:35 MSI Gaming Carbon WiFi (Too expensive for feature set $220USD)
    Gigabyte
10:52 Gigabyte Vision D (Cut from original video. GN Thought too niche)
14:35 Gigabyte Aorus Master (Shitty Dual Bios. Too many PCI-E slots routed thru chipset)
21:10 Gigabyte Gaming mATX (No Idea it existed when shooting the GN video, "legit cool board", good for memory OC)
    Asus
24:06 Asus ROG Strix E Gaming (Cut from original video. has SLi support. Expensive & niche. Ditto Vision D)
26:36 Asus ROG Strix F Gaming (hard to find at MSRP, $10 more than competition without more features)
    Asrock
30:50 Asrock Steel Legend mATX (Bad VRM heatsink, MSI Mortar has better VRM & Internal Type-C)
32:35 Tangent to Asus TUF Gaming mATX, isn't part of list tho.
36:10 Asrock Taichi ($300USD, Too damn expensive)
40:37 Asrock Phantom Gaming ITX ($20 more expensive than Gigabyte ITX, Has Internal Type-C)
    43:44 Conclusion / Summary

I haven't watched the entire GN video either, because I don't see why I would. I'm not interested in ITX boards, I'm not interested in the low end boards, I'm not interested in the very high end boards. If you cut buildzoid's videos down to the segment you personally need, he's actually pretty efficient at showing differences between options and helping to make an informed decision. I don't consider the total length of the video an issue, if I can just grab the information I need.

The only reason I've decided for the Asus B550-F is their cashback program in Germany. That's 30€ straight cashback, 25€ for a review and 10€ for an amazon review. At 65€ off, that board becomes very, very interesting. For the original asking price, I would've probably gotten the Gigabyte Pro for the apparently pretty good memory topology or the Tomahawk, because I've had positive experience with MSI in the past and it has an internal type C. Not that I would ever use the type C in my case anyway, but having a dead port in the front slightly triggers my OCD.

Funny thing about the B550M Steel Legend, it's not even the VRM or its heatsink that gets hot with an overclocked 3950X, it's the PCB underneath. Components are just too close. The VRM doesn't have a problem (and to be fair, the PCB temperatures are even in check, they're just higher than any other board in its price class)
For a 3900X OC and below it's a fine board. But for an overclocked 3950X I'd expect it to desolder itself in a few years.

The ground PCB plane is used to cool down the VRMs too. The chips (mosfets and driver) have a big contact point underneath to help transfer heat from the chip to the PCB.

Not quite a year later, I went with Asus B550-F for $178.00 paired with a 5800X. A 5600X would have made more sense but I wanted all the parts at the same time instead of spread out over a couple weeks, or more. I saved by pinching the Noctua NH-D14 and GTX Titan X from the old system. I'm gonna repeit myself here as well in case someone didn't see it on GN channel with the big roundup.
For the mATX boards I do think the Steel legend is a very viable board in many cases as the other two have some pcie limitations
    MSI B550m Mortar:
    +Good VRM
+First slot is 16x (many cases are limited with the 16x in the second position)
!- 4x slot disable second M.2. So only one m.2 SSD or no pcie expansion (except for one 1x if it fits with the graphics card).
!- only 2 USB 3 5gbit at the back (+1 usbc 10gbit USB and one using USB a) but have one USB c internal header
    Asus B550m Tuf gaming
    +Good VRM.
    +4 USB 3 5gbit at the rear
!- Placement of 16x slot is limiting in many smaller mATX cases, including mine, Otherwise my first choice
!- 1x slot (top one) limit 4x slot to 2x if a cars is used in the first 1x.
    B550M Steel legend
    +First slot is 16x
    +4 USB 3 5gbit at the rear
    +2 internal USB 3 5gbit
+ No bandwidth or lane limitation for pcie slots or SSDs like the other two boards
+ RGB on the board for those that like that.
!- But the second m.2 is only 2x (or sata) but I think this is the least limited 4x + m.2 configuration of the three boards.
    !- Worse VRM.
!- Wifi have to be added through a m.2 card and antennas, but it is a specific slot so it still allows you to use 2 m.2 SSDs + Wifi
!- Don't know if it have a flashback feature, couldn't fin it
Personally, I would have loved to use the ASUS TUF board but the placement of the 16x prevent me in my in win 301 as it would come to far down in the case and rob airflow from the bottom fans. The MSI Mortar would be good if the rear wasn't so limited of USB ports, If I want to use my Rift I use ALL USB 3 10gbit+5gbit on the rear and would need a add-in card...in the 4x slot, which would remove the option to run 2 m.2 drives.
So for me the only one of the boards I can run without sacrificing an m.2 or have compatibility issues with is the B550m Steel legend. But it should be good enough for a 8-10 core with PBO I hope.
Hope someone else found this helpful.

      @Infigo96 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Seems like the B550m Steel legend is not far off the MSI and ASUS so I wouldn't be too worried about the VRM for most users:

Had bad experiences with Asus and Gigabyte. Asus boards like to only last for a week for me and Gigabyte boards like to only last a year. Even though the boards are under warranty, its a bloody pain in the arse to go through the process. Heres to hoping a pleasant and reliable experience with the MSI board as I have heard all but positives.

    Hi Bulldzoid!
Thanks for sharing your advice. I'm about to buy a B550, and watching your videos I didn't get it clearly between MSI B550-A pro and Asus B550 tuf, which one has the best VRM thermal management. I don't care about maximum Amps they can feed, only about thermals that can remain at good level with small OC (8 core cpu and maximum 1.4volts)
Asking this because you suggested the MSI one as "entry point" for B550, I couldn't find any review of it, but the x570 version of MSI A-PRO has really bad thermal on VRM reaching 108 degrees on online reviews.
    Thanks so much!

To be fair it seems like you are tailoring what you recommend on a much different upgrade schedule to the average user. I think the Taichi in particular might be a good buy in the 300 range even with x570 because Intel lan, no funky dual bios like the aorus master more sata than unify which has Realtek lan. Also internal usb c which most cases are currently adding and most phones and external ssds will soon support. If spending 300 on a mobo you would want to it have enough features to last a few years right?

IO ports are a standard size right...... so when we had motherboards 7 years ago which had....PS2, 12 usb ports, Ethernet, 3 wifis, clr cmos and bios flashback there is no excuse why you cant have that today (and have 80% of that on an ITX).

I think my Maximus VIII impact is a great example of a fantastic ITX rear IO, with the one caveat that it should have had 2-4 more USBs.
They could've moved the SPDIF to in front of the U.2 which is near the back and made more USBs above the HDMI, or just removed U.2 entirely for M.2 and put a full stack of USBs there. Otherwise it's fantastic. Post code exists, power and reset available for benching along with flashback/CMOS, and still has wifi, audio (digital and analog), video out, lan...

    • @tomstech4390
      @tomstech4390 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Matruchus I'm going to counteract my own post a little with a caveat......rear IO ports take up space on a PCB so a 4-high stack of usb takes up about 50% more space than a 2-high and if anyone has had a 4-high stack they should know you cant always use all 4 at the same time, you'll always find a usb stick or wifi dongle or "gaming mouse" usb thats got a fat chunky end so blocks the other 2 usb ports from being used (like that fat fuck in the middle seat on an airline flight).
But for the most part you get the same problem with 2-high ports anyway (we need 2-3 ports spaced) its still doable and its upto consumers to use extensions for these devices. If I have 8 usb ports I'm usually good, I can make do with 6 and I wouldnt know what to do with 10 (my x99 sli plus).
Seriously you need a mouse, keyboard, controller, mic... and 6 webcams? thats some wierd show right there.

The Intel I225-V LAN chip has had a lot of problems and by getting a board with it you're playing the lottery if you get the old or revised one (I'm not even sure if the revised one fixed the problem, or if it's shipping yet actually).

"According to the advisory, there is a variance in the interval between data packets transmitted on the physical layer. This variance can cause packet loss, resulting in reduced throughput. Interestingly, the IPG variance is seen only when the PHY is networked with select kinds of 2.5 GbE compliant routers and switches."
So it is basically a non-issue (for individuals) as the vast majority of people do not have 2.5GbE compliant routers and if they decide to get one in the future they can choose a brand where the issue does not occur.
The issue is alos avoided running in 1GBE mode

B550 Aorus Master: who needs 3x M.2 slots connected to CPU? Video Editors!! Video editors making complex projects from many source videos like to have a 3xSSD arrangement:
    (1) OS/Application
    (2) Media
    (3) Scratch
It's generally less necessary for the Scratch drive to be ultra high speed (SATA SSD is usually fine), but since PCIe doesn't support a 12x slot, if you want a second NVME for Media, you will waste 4x lanes if you don't break those out for a third NVME.
IDK, people might use it, but it's completely niche IMO. It's easier (and can be cheaper) to go for X570 and use the PCIE x4 lanes downstream of the chipset for NVME drives.

+1 To Intel Lan over Realtek
-1to putting Wifi on a board aimed at gamers
ASRock have the right idea; including a M.2 Key-E slot so nutters can buy and add their own wireless adapter (same as you get in laptops) if they feel the need - so everyone else doesn't have to pay for their wireless urges. Unfortunately ASRock are using Realtek Ethernet on everything but the stupidly expensive Taichi so...
