You rock Chris Harris! Not only do you communicate the fun, excitement and passion with your video presentations, but you somehow manage to do it in your editorials too. You are one of the most effective extant auto journalists. Congratulations. Keep it coming.
top gear UK fell off, theyre more concerned with taking an old volvo thru african jungles or other moronic "challenges" like a car racing a train, no one that loves cars cares about that bullshit
givemeajackson what you're calling entertainment at the end of the day will always be subjective, and I respect that, having said that, I could see them doing a 'challenge' where goats drive double decker buses across a desert blindfolded, and you people will call that 'entertainment', they're a car show with incredible access, they can still do the dumbed down challenges while providing quality car information for the enthusiasts that helped build their show up to what it's become now.
I always thought that first gen 1M is the true successor to the original E30 M3. Proportion/size-wise, presence-wise, just with 2 extra cylinders and turbocharged. As the years went by the M3s got bigger and heavier (Especially the V-8s) and became more like what an old 5 series/M5 used to be. Just some random thoughts and my ever humble opinion.
Sandra Rios Good thought about it beging successor of E30 M3, I have the same feeling about it, and I'm in love with 1M as E30 (overall ont onlt M version) is ma favourite BMW.
The thing is this: petrolheads might see Top Gear as "not enough", but the world needs it, 'cause it introduces ordinary people to the automotive world, in a very entertaining way. I absolutely love them. But I also need more than that, as all petrolheads do. So I come to the internet to watch geniuses like Harris and Sutcliffe and Bovingdon give us what we need about cars, the details. So I don't think we should separate Top Gear from this. Instead, they should complement each other.
Love the BMW 1M- the best handling car around in my opinion- shame only 450 came to the UK because the prices have not dropped since the launch in 2011
its really hard to tell Chris hw good these cars really are because your angles are so good. Excellent driving. I sometimes wonder if there is anything you can't drift.
Although entartaining, Clarkson never was objective, but Harris in my opinion is the best reviewer I have ever seen...I love his enthusiasm for cars. He doesnt act or pretend but still his reviews are always very entertaining and in the end he just picks the better car which is more fun to drive and that is what we all want to see.
God I so much love Chrises reviews, so much passion put into his work, you can sense the professional way he has with the cam. Top Gear is good, really good, but this is just freakin great! Cheers from Poland. Oh P.S the X6 M is a great car, though You dont like it.
I had a 135i with the DCT, incredible machine. With the 1M things are somehow a bit different. As you get the different brakes and suspension; no to mention the tight rear diff, it´s more worth it to get the 6 speed manual, you get more feel of the car and it´s more flexibe if you want to fool around. Yeah that was the first thing I noticed of my 1M, the sound pitch is significantly more acute. Reminds me of a Porsche. (BTW, i´m on the market for a 2011 911 turbo s, what do you suggest?)
Chris Harris needs to be the premier auto journalist, as much as I like clarkson and tiff.. Brits may not have the best cars , but they have the most entertaining viewers.
The 1M´s engine is different to the one of the 135. The 135´s engine is the N55 turbo scroll turbo; basically a single turbocharger with 2 air intakes. The engine in the 1M is the make before the N55, the N54. That is the M-Tuned version 6 cylinder engine you find in a Z4 or an X5 and that does have 2 turbochargers.
Wow, those averages are good; though that also depends on how you drive it. In the city I never push it too hard, but i often go on road trips where I just churn out it´´s pistons haha it sucks dry the tank in no time. I totally get what you mean! I live in Colombia, my 1M was worth about $102K USD. Fuel prices here are just under $6 USD per gallon but anyhow every refuel of my car is about 50 bucks. Me too, I bought it for the sake of me being a total petrolhead. Each rear tyre is worth $1000
Because it is only the R model that is willing to go sideways like that? (but I have seen other videos of non R models going sideways and I think people say it is the Limited Slip Difrential that does the trick for it going sideways...)
@demonicBerith i could see what you mean, front engine vs mid engine, 4 seats vs 2 seats. the cars only look similar on paper but the cayman r is probably slightly faster than the e46 m3, but not the E92 m3. The E92 is even faster in a straight line than my dads 911 s but not by much
@demonicBerith I'm just pointing out that Chris answered your "uncertainty" at 2:50, nothing more. Nowhere did I say that the 1M is better than the Cayman R. The specs you refer to don't tell you everything, like how the suspension "squats" in the bends, how the engine "pulls" the car or how the car halts to a stop. The specs are not the sole determining factors for a car's performance. FYI, current BMWs are limited to 155mph. Take that off and they can achieve higher speeds.
Porsche should use the 911 models name to it's special Caymans, so: Cayman GT3 and Cayman GT3 RS! But about the video...which one is quicker around a circuit and which is faster in straight line??
N54 is a bit more fuel efficient. I own a 1M and i have a friend with a 135i, we compared fuel rates and the 135 used almost 1/4 of a tank more than my car. A tuned N55? Sure, but now go and fit some high comp pistons and adjust bigger turbos to the 1M and you get a monster. Plus you get far better suspension, brakes and steering than ion a 135
Yes I agree, you should keep the 13 second car for a while. You tune it for it to be updated. I personally don´t like tuning exotics. I like everything to be original But come on, you own a 330 + HP car and you are hoping for fuel economy? I´ll give some credit to BMW for making a performance cars with that average MPG. How much does your GTR average? (awesome car by the way dude, congrats)
I would add that, while Cloakson always coveted a very marketable populist presentation fashion, as a sensitive automobile conosseur he was never much of an entity. He must be credited with having made car reviews immensely more popular but I am not sure his knowledge or interpreting tactile talents have brought the automotive experience a centimeter further. Example: He DISCARDED THE FIRST CAYMAN with arrogance and disdain...
@petrolhead229 it's the manufacturers that limit the cars, not the german government. if the german government limited the cars, then all the oder cars that are capable of driving faster than 155mph would also be limited, which is not the case.
Evo has much more information, but silghtly less enjoyable to watch, even so all the opinions are balanced. Top Gear is much more fun to watch, but less real information and more opinions. Both are equally good
Without top gear these guys would be off in some far corner appealing to a small handful of people.. Jeremy Clarkson is the hooligan with the humor and a wonderful 'get bitten by the petrol bug' guy with 2 brilliant co-hosts that are a bit more serious. Then you get tiniest guys that get more serious while being every bit as good at prresenting, just not as light hearted
I have the poverty spec of each of these. 128i Sport Manual and a 987.2 2.9 Base Cayman manual. They are easily 90% of the fun and 30% of the $$$ The 1 series already has a bunch of M parts in the suspension. For the Porsche I think I'll add the R suspension...
Its funny how people think the 1M isn't a proper 'M' car when in reality it is the closest thing to the M bible to come in 23 years since the original E30! BMW is back baby!
The title of the video is... BMW 1-series M Coupe v Porsche Cayman R... yet the presenter simply reviews both cars without ever comparing them! Which is better? Hello...?
@demonicBerith OK, the ONLY way you can test two similar cars is by putting them on the same track with the same driver and running laps. There is no "Restrictor" this isnt a gokart it is electronically limited due to an agreement with the german hippie party. (porsche didn't go for it) In my Mind (and anyone else who knows cars), HANDLING and 0-60 accel, NOT top speed, determines a car's abilities, and in both those categories m1 wins. I am a huge porsche fan, but theres no argument here.
C. Harris > J. Clarkson Evo TV > Top Gear Top gear has become bloated w/ special effects and other unnecessary gimmicks. Clarkson lets his bias get in the way of a truly objective review. My $0.02.
This is the best car reviewer ever. Nothing but the car.
Yeah, Chris Harris rules. He's a proper driver.
"M cars are not about engines, M cars are about chassis." C.H. 👍👍
You rock Chris Harris! Not only do you communicate the fun, excitement and passion with your video presentations, but you somehow manage to do it in your editorials too. You are one of the most effective extant auto journalists. Congratulations. Keep it coming.
Top gear is about joking and having fun but Chris knows and reviews car better than anybody in the business.
top gear UK fell off, theyre more concerned with taking an old volvo thru african jungles or other moronic "challenges" like a car racing a train, no one that loves cars cares about that bullshit
josj15 I agree 100%. Fifth Gear is better for car enthusiasts. Since Top Gear is the BBC's staple it appeals to just about everyone.
josj15 it's entertainment.
givemeajackson what you're calling entertainment at the end of the day will always be subjective, and I respect that, having said that, I could see them doing a 'challenge' where goats drive double decker buses across a desert blindfolded, and you people will call that 'entertainment', they're a car show with incredible access, they can still do the dumbed down challenges while providing quality car information for the enthusiasts that helped build their show up to what it's become now.
Funny on how this comment has aged.
I always thought that first gen 1M is the true successor to the original E30 M3. Proportion/size-wise, presence-wise, just with 2 extra cylinders and turbocharged.

E92 V8 engine was lighter than E46 M3
"i'd almost forgive bmw for the x6 m. not quite" love it
Great review - Always happy to listen to Chris talk about cars.
"oh so and another tire dies" ANOTHER??? EPIC MAN OR AWESOME PEOPLE MR HARRIS YOU ARE AWESOME
The 1M is basically the E30 M3's great-grand son.
Chris Harris never ceases to amaze me with his drifting skills. Entertaining presenter as well.
Can't wait for the M2
Today is my birthday... this review vid is a great present... THANKS!!!
The thing is this: petrolheads might see Top Gear as "not enough", but the world needs it, 'cause it introduces ordinary people to the automotive world, in a very entertaining way. Love my 1M. Just 220 for Canada.
its really hard to tell Chris hw good these cars really are because your angles are so good. Excellent driving. I sometimes wonder if there is anything you can't drift.
why do i love the opening shot so much
Although entartaining, Clarkson never was objective, but Harris in my opinion is the best reviewer I have ever seen...I love his enthusiasm for cars. He doesnt act or pretend but still his reviews are always very entertaining and in the end he just picks the better car which is more fun to drive and that is what we all want to see.
03:47 that hilarious hollywood camera movement
+TheDoctor I like 1:57 better :)
+kubek555 hilarious mate :D
Chris has the best reviews, I would love to tune a car and have him review it and give his recommendations for improvement.
Evo should seriously make a car show for tv, it would seriously rival top gear. And get tiff onboard.
Hello 10 years later
Chris now has a 1M... I want one so bad :'(
Fun fact Chris Harris currently owners a 1 M so that should tell you something. It’s also tuned
I am trading in my Carrera S in for a Cayman R as we speak. FYI, the Cayman R does come with a limited slip. The R's balance is perfect.
God I so much love Chrises reviews, so much passion put into his work, you can sense the professional way he has with the cam. Top Gear is good, really good, but this is just freakin great! Cheers from Poland. Oh P.S the X6 M is a great car, though You dont like it.
Yet another brilliant video from Chris Harris. When will this guy get his own TV show?
"Ohhh dear, another tire dies"...lol too funny!
Chris Harris is the best....
10 years later im reviewing the cayman r and spyder, should be fun
I had a 135i with the DCT, incredible machine. With the 1M things are somehow a bit different. Thank God, Chris did this comparison!
I'd say Chris harris is the the crux of the matter. He is a likeable yet serious guy who can not be hated by anyone :)
Harris' catchphrase is "it doesn't get much better than this."
The 1M´s engine is different to the one of the 135. The 135´s engine is the N55 turbo scroll turbo; basically a single turbocharger with 2 air intakes. YEAAA Chris Harris Needs his own show fo sho.....
How come the cayman is side ways in this video but not in other videos?
Because it is only the R model that is willing to go sideways like that? (but I have seen other videos of non R models going sideways and I think people say it is the Limited Slip Difrential that does the trick for it going sideways...)
Great car. Great review. Its more special than other M cars
chris harris is becoming a car review god, much like jeremy clarkson and the rest of those lads. well done.
Love this guy's reviews!
@TheEryk03
Yes, you are right.
Let me refrase: "The 1M´s rival is the Audi TT RS, not the Cayman.
The R model now cost 3 times as much as the other models and cost more then when it was brand new...
chris, you need to drive an z3m coupe, and review it, great car, great looks, and a wobbly rear end :) I have an s50 b32 in the uk.
2 awesome cars with chris harris behind the wheel...3 thumbs up.
Turn the adverts off
nice to see you again chris
Yes..he need a Own tv show...next co-host of top gear??
favourite journalist. very unbiased opinions.
@bistro985 no.. commander shepard looks like chris harris..
Chris so u didnt say .. Which is better ??!
Chris, ever considered entering the D1? :D
@demonicBerith i could see what you mean, front engine vs mid engine, 4 seats vs 2 seats. the cars only look similar on paper but the cayman r is probably slightly faster than the e46 m3, but not the E92 m3. The E92 is even faster in a straight line than my dads 911 s but not by much
dude, u got some talent of drift which i like it
@demonicBerith I'm just pointing out that Chris answered your "uncertainty" at 2:50, nothing more. Nowhere did I say that the 1M is better than the Cayman R.

I will say it. The 1m is the better car.

@Image966 You will love the Cayman R, it is the best handling Porsche. I got my three weeks ago and love it.
one of the best reviewers
Is that a red 1M? Individual?
@128-192 they filtered it to look red...for good reason 😙
So where's the actual comparison??? :)
I was just wondering that too...
Yes I agree, you should keep the 13 second car for a while. You tune it for it to be updated. I personally don´t like tuning exotics. I feel like I'm watching the Bourne Supremacy with all of that Shaky Cam action
I'm a big Porsche fan and the Cayman is my next buy. But I must admit, the 1-series bimmers are nice.
Chris is the best reviewer
Chris Harris should have his own tv show
I would add that, while Cloakson always coveted a very marketable populist presentation fashion, as a sensitive automobile conosseur he was never much of an entity. Chris Harris is one of the best.
I have a quite specific problem with the name "Chris", however...
@dang1087 excuse me, I meant flat not flay lol.
because top gear is meant for entertainment. they're both great shows in their own rights.
Zero conclusion... guess I'd have to buy the issue for that! :) Great vid with Harris as usual!
@richardmajor86 no this should be a half hour long review lol
Which?
just love the new BMW 1-series M Coupe
I would choose Cayman R
The BMW One Series M Coupe is the best BMW made to this day
Evo has much more information, but silghtly less enjoyable to watch, even so all the opinions are balanced. Top Gear is much more fun to watch, but less real information and more opinions.
Both are equally good
Wrong comment for this vid, my bad, last autocar vid was my last comment. This guy Does know what he's talking about.
liked this video after that impeccable quote '' oh dear,....... and so another tyre dies'' :) haha legend
evo should have its own tv show
Without top gear these guys would be off in some far corner appealing to a small handful of people.. @TheJONNYfern chris?
Aw, I wanted to see a drag race :( Awesome video though :)
Its funny how people think the 1M isn't a proper 'M' car when in reality it is the closest thing to the M bible to come in 23 years since the original E30!
BMW is back baby!
chris harris reviews are best
this must be the quote of the day: "almost forgive BMW for X6M. Almost, not quite!"
The title of the video is... BMW 1-series M Coupe v Porsche Cayman R... yet the presenter simply reviews both cars without ever comparing them! Which is better? Hello...?
I think Chris Harris and Tim Schrick are the best car journalists in the world...
so? Who wins?
yes. nice review :)
keep it up
@demonicBerith OK, the ONLY way you can test two similar cars is by putting them on the same track with the same driver and running laps. WAyy too short :(
We have plenty of good cars - the companies that make them just tend to be owned by part of much larger global groups.
nice review:)
This is Chris Harris, real Chris Harris.
Chris is so proper.
C. Harris > J. Clarkson
Evo TV > Top Gear
Top gear has become bloated w/ special effects and other unnecessary gimmicks. Clarkson lets his bias get in the way of a truly objective review.
My $0.02.
@MagicAyrtonforever I agree
I will try that
where the fuck can i find the 1m coupe review from top gear uk??? is there one?
Chris Harris drives a car till the wheels fall off.
