@@lozzamozza123 I think they mean the tone of the song, not just that it's about Anne Lister. The folky tune works so well with the mood of the series!
This song should at least get a Grammy nomination & a win, and season ONE an Emmy winner. Suranne Jones is a tour de force, surely can't be ignored during the award season.
And at a time when women weren't expected to be feisty. The Jane Austen type heroines always leave me cold - their only aim in life was to find a husband - but Anne Lister was in a class of her own
For once that phrase is correct (it's often used so loosely that I always think "No, it's OF the time). With Anne Lister she definitely was ahead of her time and writing in code about her exploits. Hats off to her love though because she had a lot to lose by becoming Anne Lister's "companion"

How do you manage to sing it? do you sing the sounds or the words? It makes me very difficult that the words are not fully pronounced, and the names and part of the words are merged into one continuous word and nothing is separated by anything - can you analyze and comment on this? or I don't understand something?
@@aaronha9341 I agree with you, they deserve this! They were around with this song, way before the show! I've listened to it, about 200 times already :D Have a great day.

living in West Yorkshire I’ve known of and been a fan of Anne Lister for some time. But It wasn’t until the BBC drama I had heard this song. I’m also a fan of northern folk and this is perfect. Good job ladies.
one of the best things about this video is how at 1:46, a second banana is handed to the person singing into a banana microphone, to become a banana fiddle
Thank you Ann Lister for making it so easy for us to know our lives are validated I can't leave out Ann Walker bless them both rest in peace love always
The women and men who knew didn’t write the laws of the land; only ignorant men who couldn’t comprehend what ladies who related to ladies got up to!..😄So no crime to answer.. Unlike homosexual men who by law faced a capital offence.. England up until about 1840... after you just got a lengthy jail term till the 1950’s
i've loved this song for 7 years (since your performance at broadstairs folk week) and i'm so glad your music is finally getting the clout it deserves!
Has that effect on me as well! Listening to it, I feel like a deliriously happy time-traveller, transported to a time and place far away from anything I know! Magical!
I came across this show and knew right away I was going to be hooked. I have needed to cancel my hob now that GOT is over but im keeping it to watch this,. Im hooked. love this song it is as perfect as the show.
I'm a woman who plays BattleTech and MechWarrior genre games. I've taken to giving my characters the nickname "Gentleman Jack" because of the inspiration that Anne Lister is to me... and it *completely* makes sense, a lady-MechWarrior who consistently pilots Heavy brawling 'mechs, is a lesbian, and constantly wrecks her opponents who are men when they challenge her ability or authority. This song is straight up on my playlist for my stompy robot action, and it is *so good.*
Fantastic Girls- Me being a Yorkshire lad from the west riding; this show made me remove my earbuds and Wow- what seems so far to be a mesmerising true tale .. and the song has me laughing- brilliant
When they got the news that a show about Anne Lister would air AND WITH THEIR SONG as theme, they must have gotten so happy 💕💕 thank you guys for just existing

Yes I did, love it. Brilliant series was a great fan of Suranne Jones before this but now.......she is just brilliant

I hope Anne Lister is at peace and proud of her legacy, and the knowledge ladies can be themselves now.
Yes we owe a debt to her x
Obsessed with both this show and this song. Incredible that this was written 5 years before the show premiere yet it is so perfect!

This closing credit song is the icing on the cake of the best show on television. My wife and I sing this at the end of every episode.
Thanks!
Me, reading the lyrics: "Is this life goals or wife goals?"
Both
Verse 1]
Behind her back, she's Gentleman Jack
A Yorkshire lady of renown
Ever so fine, won't toe the line
Speak her name, Gentleman Frown
At Shibden Hall she had them all
The fairer sex fell under her spell
Dapper and bright, she held them tight
Handsome Anne seduced them well
[Chorus]
Gentleman Jack, oh Gentleman Jack
Watch your back, you're under attack
Their husbands are coming, you'd better start running
For nobody likes a Jack-the-lass
Jack-the-lass, Jack-the-lass
No one likes a Jack-the-lass
The code is cracked, your bags are packed
The knives are out for Gentleman Jack
[Verse 2]
Proud and stout 'nd full of clout
She played the fellas at their game
Sharp of mind, she's one of a kind
Devilish ways the men couldn't tame
Hidden away, revealed today
Loaded words in diaries found
Once exposed in a baffling code
Lusty letters, all leather bound
Chorus]
Gentleman Jack, oh Gentleman Jack
Watch your back, you're under attack
Their husbands are coming, you'd better start running
For nobody likes a Jack-the-lass
Jack-the-lass, Jack-the-lass
No one likes a Jack-the-lass
The code is cracked, your bags are packed
The knives are out for Gentleman Jack
[Bridge]
Behind her back, she's Gentleman Jack
She's Gentleman Jack behind her back
Behind her back, she's Gentleman Jack
She's Gentleman Jack behind her back
Behind her back, she's Gentleman Jack
She's Gentleman Jack behind her back
Behind her back, she's Gentleman Jack
She's Gentleman Jack behind her back
[Chorus]
Gentleman Jack, oh Gentleman Jack
Watch your back, you're under attack
Their husbands are coming, you'd better start running
For nobody likes a Jack-the-lass
Jack-the-lass, Jack-the-lass
No one likes a Jack-the-lass
The code is cracked, your bags are packed
The knives are out for Gentleman Jack
That's a mood for the lyrics and the video :D
