Seriously, thank you so much for highlighting one of the top 5 (imho) mixing engineers of all time but also meticulously showing how to do it with more common plug ins for those that can’t afford the AMEK or any of the top end hardware / software that the pros use.
Would’ve loved to hear the Pro-Q 3 in Natural Phase mode vs the AMEK with the THD bypassed so the colouration was absent. Would’ve been a fairer comparison imo. But in this comparison the AMEK sounds better. The snare sounds fatter and shaker less invasive intense on the AMEK vs the Pro Q
You're right, I totally forgot I left the THD on. The natural phase mode in Pro-Q3 would make minimal difference with a shelf - I tested to confirm. The zero latency setting actually more closely matches the AMEK's phase.
yes you have a wonderful eq plugin of that GML and hard to beat and it is Acustica Audio Green :) also for Nebula I use Tim Petherick GML 8200 library and it is fantastic :) people always forgot about Acustica Audio plugin because of their CPU usage and quirks! but they sound the best. yes a bit of a fanboy here lol. good video anyway! keep it up
I could be wrong, but isn't Plugin doctor also showing a low shelf boost and if so shouldn't that also be included in the PRO-Q eq curve for comparison?
This came from digging through the few print interviews I could find. I don't belong to Mix with the Masters and I don't think he's on there anyway. Could be wrong.
What sample rate did you use when using AMEK eq? So far as I can remember that particular eq unfortunately has top end eq cramping to prevent that you need to use at least 96KHz sample rate and that top end curve you seen in plugin doctor would likely be bit different then. The difference between ProQ3 and AMEK isn't just eq but you kept THD button on which introduced saturation that's one reason why they sound different. When it comes to bus equalisation especially top end I prefer Curve Bender or sometimes certain Pultec plugin emulations or even Bettermaker from Plugin Alliance which is completely clean no added harmonics and should be pretty close to that GML Spike uses for that job. Anyway thanks again for another useful little technique that some of our heroes use. Cheers!
The session was 48KHz. The AMEK cramping really only happens with a bell shape. This is set to shelf, so it doesn't distort the curve, other than plunging down to 0dB at nyquist. Nice catch with the THD - I didn't realize I left it on!
By the way, there's a online class where he shows his mixbus, and using q10 from waves (he talks that he uses hardware) with scary 6db really wide boost on the top end, I've tried myself to mix with it but it's hard to soften things out.
@@GreenLightSound well I have to say that (like George) I tend to work at 96k all the time so..: But also that I’ve never had a problem with eq “cramping” even though people like to talk about it on the internets.
Just one shelf mixing technique or approach? really? I just discovered Mark Tent and wanted to learn more on his approach but OOPS! surprise surprise! there is no actual masterclasses of this guy, whatever free or paid... I think we all can just guess on real technique and approaches of Mark Tent...
what kind of tip is that supposed to be? just because people always want to recreate everything, they will never reach their favorite stars. why don't people do their own things. try technology and plugins. go your own way. Make own music. Dont copy sounds. Dont copy song arrangements. Dont copy mixing techniques.
What kind of comment is this supposed to be? Becouse people want to come to internet and complain about stuff, they will never learn to let go, be positive and let people do what they want.
Your secrets of engineers video series are always appreciated. Thank you very much.

Glad you liked it!
Your videos are amazing!!
AMEK seems a bit more sweet & open to my ears.. Love these vids, man.
Thanks!
this thing sounds great maybe a little less harsh sounding than proQ3?

I've heard good things about Acustica. I'll have to give them a try some time.
gml is the best eq in the nebula world hands down
Would this replace a pultec at the end of the chain, or could you use both?
I could be wrong, but isn't Plugin doctor also showing a low shelf boost and if so shouldn't that also be included in the PRO-Q eq curve for comparison?
It is, but I chose to ignore it and focus on the top end since I'm not sure if that is characteristic of the hardware.
The mono maker engaged at it's lowest setting creates this bump in the low end. If you disengage it when you are not using it, it goes away.
Hey jo. Where did you get this info from? Been wanting to find out more about spike’s mixing style. Mix with the masters?
This came from digging through the few print interviews I could find. I don't belong to Mix with the Masters and I don't think he's on there anyway. Could be wrong.
@@GreenLightSoundthanks for doing the footwork but again more importantly showing how to achieve it!

@@GreenLightSound Yup you're right with the shelf that's what I missed...
Hi buddy!
Where did you get this information that he, for example, would use a similar amount of high gain on the mixbus?
By the way, there's a online class where he shows his mixbus, and using q10 from waves (he talks that he uses hardware) with scary 6db really wide boost on the top end, I've tried myself to mix with it but it's hard to soften things out.
From an old print interview.
@@GreenLightSound Nice, would you mind to share which interview it was?
George Massenburg's own MDW EQ plug in would be closest... and sounds incredible anyway.
While it is a great EQ at high sample rates (it cramps at lower ones), it's not directly based on the 8200 hardware.

Mark?? its Mike my friend.
No, it's Mark.
I apologise.. you are correct@@GreenLightSound
