Loved them all the history of their existence, does exactly what you want and nothing that you don’t, these with the AMEK Rupert Neve compressor was like adding a silk,satin and velvet finish to everything, without loss of detail and the felt dynamics…and I lost my two Compressors and a eq in a fire while stored at a PA company and none of the many insurance companies paid out…one of the saddest days of my professional life…
Very good explanation on the backgrounds of each and interesting listening. What I've found over the years is even though varying eq's, compressors and other tools in plugin form, they have differing sounds on the same settings, but you can make them sound virtually identical if you tweak the settings, which has in essence helped me cut down on collecting more and more eq's when any one of them will get you 95-97% within the sound of any one of them... I don't think you could go wrong with any of these amazing plugins and I have quite a few of them, love the work Plugin Alliance does.
Hi there, thanks for the question. For these examples, it's the settings that are matched between the EQs, rather than the levels. That's on purpose, though! The main point here is to show that the two EQs can sound different and have different proportions of boots and cut going on with the same exact EQ settings. Even when the nominal EQ settings are matched, they may not end up having the same exact boost and cuts-and therefore may not be the same exact perceived level. This is behavior that would be consistent between the original hardware units as well, and exactly the kind of thing we are trying to experience in the video! Any difference in perceived loudness at the same settings would be part of the difference between the two EQs, as they are EQing in subtly different ways. If you're talking about level matching the before and after EQ, I didn't bother because comparing before and after EQ choices isn't really the point of this particular video. Any "before" examples are just there in passing for a moment to supply some general context. I actually considered doing a level match of the "before", but decided against it, because doing it seamlessly would require either bringing up yet another boosted un-EQ'd audio track for each example, or adding a note in text on the screen about level matching while the examples are playing-either of which I figured might just needlessly confuse most people, and distract from the comparison between the two models, which is the focus of the video. I think the average user who knows enough to care about level matching is going to know that a whopping 6dB of boost on top and bottom is going to sound significantly different and louder from the un EQ'd signal, and isn't a "real world" EQ setting for mix bus! :-) Ultimately, this video isn't about how to EQ, or whether these specific EQ changes sound "better" or "worse" than the original. It's about comparing what the two similar units sound like relative to one another with the same exact nominal settings. There, I think (and hope) we succeeded. To me they are so similar it could have been an update to the 200 plugin with simply an ability to switch the emulation inside the plugin. It would have been even easier to compare the two sounds and decide which one to keep.
I actually Love how they did this . . . Honouring Both engineers, by giving them each their own version of what they originally created together. While these two plugins are designed very similarly, their curves and overall sounds are very different. If you are looking for a Swiss Army Knife, get the Kirchhoff EQ, which has some of the 250 curves, Neve, SSL, and Pultec curves, as well as some amazing new innovations . . . I have it, along with the Eiosis EQ, and I Still use the AMEK 200, and am adding the AMEK 250, because they both can quickly pull-out sounds that other EQs seem to miss. My Live Recording Restoration projects got me onto my quest for a more complete arsenal of EQs . . . the AMEK 200 and 250 , and are both getting heavy use ! Bx and PA defiantly have many go to plugins that I use all the time.. . . I use Samplitude, which already comes with many great Mastering grade plugins . . . Yet, Bx PA, Slate, AVA, Kirchhoff and others are rounding out my plugin locker, quite nicely. Plus PA often has specials on their amazing line of plugins, that make adding them to your collection, a no-brainer . . . pardon the pun, as stocking up on Brainworx designed plugins, is sort of a no-brainer to me. Why does the 250 have different Default frequencies on some of the upper bands . . . ? . . . How does the 250's Sub Boost on the lower bands affect the over all tonality of the Harmonic Series, above the range of sa is very interesting, beid lower band . . . ? . . . Well . . . Hmmn . . . My current Live Performance Restoration project is of one of my own Djembe performances . . . The Djembe has , by far, the widest tonal range of any single hand drum instrument on the Planet . . . Deepest Bass, Highest Highs, and a Solid Mid Tone . . . So, when you play a High tone (a.k.a. "Open Slap"), and/or a Mid Tone, you are Still Pushing Bass . . . And So, I have noticed that this special bump in the Sub Frequency actually directly affects the the Tuning of the High and Mid Tones of the Djembe, as well . . . !?@y@?! . . . So, the AMEK 200 on primary track, is bringing the Low and Mid Tones ito focus, quite nicely, and the AMEK 250 seems to Bridge the Lows and Highs, with an Earthiness and Sheen, that is Very Complimentary to what The AMEK 200 already brought into focus . . . So, for me , these two AMEK EQs go together like Peanut Butter and Jelly ! Just downloaded the 250 demo and I must say; it sounds more sweet to my hears like mellow sound I can hear more clear mid’s whereas 200 sounds more HI FI i guess (amazing by the way) but I’ll use the 250 in my next productions! Liking it for my taste!
@neonthunderbird I could see what you're saying in a way.... but i heard them as more elegant (200) and more aggressive (250)... but aggressive in a warm way, not harsh... but pushes more out, notch-for-notch on the gain knob compared to the 200 i feel.
I like the sound of the 200 not sure why. but overall i feel they are just two different flavors on the same thing. I rarely use the 200 as is in my production (mostly do recording and mixing over mastering these days). Though I should try to put in the 200 into my workflow more. Both definitely made quite the difference in these demos.

I A/B'd it with the 200 (which I've used on *everything* for the past few months) and found that the 250 definitely has a warmer, more organic, dare I say "analogue-sounding" tonality to it, whereas the 200 sounds more transparent and hi-fi. Both outstanding plugins that I'll use for different applications.
Wow both amazing' I’ve owned the 200 for sometime now. Using it on my mix buses and for mastering. I can definitely appreciate the differences and characters in both.👍🏾

Last week I received a CD, from "First Love - Don't Say Goodnight" it's a disco song from begin 80s, I heard immediately that it was sounding thin and poor, So I was looking in my plugin pool, what could help me with this one, making it sound more Disco. So I used my favorite compressor NEOLD U17, only 1db GR, and then in EQ250, which gave the song more body and at 6K a little boost. Rendered the file, and now they are comparable with the rest of my 80s song, I wasn't disappointed. So added this one to my favorites. I'm not sure why I don't use the EQ200, just a feeling I think.
I’d be interested to see what the boosts are doing in plug-in doctor. Sometimes depending on the original hardware or the software developers, eq gain knobs aren’t always correct. Same with frequencies. Not that it matters too much! Just when comparing eq’s

But before I bought It I spent no less than 3 full whole days or more going through the paces of of "should I or shouldn't In terms of the 200 over the 250 & vice versa lol smh So I extensively ran the comparison gambit & found the 250 to be a lot more clean & precise, which was more of my style type EQ sonically. Yet although & still, has a very analog based sound it is very versatile & can cross over digitally as well. You can filth, or dirty up the sound to from It's ability's to be more transparent which is why I liked it. You can't do that with the 200 Is what I came to the conclusion of bkz the 200 has a more FLAT over based sound, so the that "sheen" that the 250 has IS missing imo. The 250 Is like having 2 EQ's In true Dig\Ana mode forms at boths perfect since peaks which again, are interchangeable unlike the 250. It takes a SEASONED pair of ears to truly know the difference.

I'm still going to get the 200 (after I get the AMEK compressor lol) just bkz when I buy a plugin for whatever reason I like & prefer to own the WHOLE family plugin collection so when I use them I have all the coinciding titles along with EQing I at least want the eco system EQ & Compressor in tandem to maintain consistency of my base sound during mixing sessions. I have a TON of mixing plugins though. Including channel strips & the likes. Mastering processors. List just goes on & and ahah smh. I don't use anywhere close to what I've PAID in investment wise financially in regards to all my tools, software, HQ VST Instrument libraries, illustrious sample libraries etc You get into this producer culture which I have been for 30 years now & you find you end up inadvertently spending a literal FORTUNE figuring out in the IN'S & OUT's of what you really need to get to the sound ur trying to achieve sonically Then you realize there's no getting around the EDUCATIONAL aspect of understanding WHY you're spending all ur $$$ & are you getting desired results. SO you have to know what ur looking for, what the target goal is. So You have to start from A. Learning mixing and all of it's intricacies and conformations . Then when you go makes purchase it's not a waste u know ijs lmao. I say all that to say that as expensive, illustrious & well stacked as my plugin catalogue & folder Is, I wish there was a way that you could know & not have to spend all ur damn $$$ before you actually realized what Is good, necessary & or a waste lol aha frfr Now I'm like a PLUGIN KRACK HEAD ahahah. I can't stop buying them & do NOT even need them bkz I already have at least 75 to 85% of all the top most popularly used & name brand developers software companies It's just a collector's passion at this point now u know. They make something, ie a plugin I like "Ouuw, I have to get that, I need that, I know I don't need no more plugins, but I need that one more plugin" That one more plugin turns into 2, those 2 plugins turn into 20, those 20 plugins turn into 200. Next thing you know ur the proud owner of 2-20k plugins that you rarely ever to never even use ahahah And those are the just the PAID ones. We haven't even discussed the all the FREEBIES lol. Especially being with such high quality standards due to advances in tech, coding etc lol You can easily get LOST in what I call the dreaded "PLUGIN ABYSS" ahah..
To me the 250 sounds better for the Master Bus & over all mix tonality as It has a "sheen" that the 200 lacks. But I like the 200 bkz It sounded like It'd be better suited on the Group\Channel Busses for Mixing & had a more "FLAT" sound that lends well to monitor frequency desired flatness for transparent mixing solutions Again. When I feel this type of way I just get both ahah. That way problem solved, no wandering, no guessing, only optionality and choice! That's how I like to live life generally as a base line narrative lol

It's always the same with them. If they don't apply gain matching, they won't sell anything. 'cause the difference is fractional.
