  • In the 1980s, car manufacturers designed some of the worst and most unreliable cars in history - and because of this they were doomed right from the start. From horrible design flaws to wild safety hazards, the 80s were a decade of some history's most unforgettable vehicles. Including cars like the Yugo down to the Ford Pinto, this video breaks down why some of the worst cars of the 1980s were so bad.

The Pinto really shouldn't be in the list of 80s car. It's a real stretch even with your facts. It was replaced in the 80s by the poorly built Escort.

I worked at one of the 2 delorean dealers in Ohio in the 80s, we sold 23 cars, I drove every one, with a manuel trans they were ok, they did handle well, it was not a bad car 2 things doomed it, they could not get the engine they wanted, was going to be a rotary made by GM, that was never made, the 2nd thing was they just ran out of money and could not get anyone to fund it (except drug traffickers), I will say in John Deloreans defense he never used drugs or sold them it was a last resort to get financing for the car company

in fairness to the yugo every one knew it was cheap crap. it was cheaper then a used car. being disposable WAS its selling point

If you look at running costs modern cars are way worse. Back in the day you could just switch a 1.99 lightbulb or a 5,99 mirror glass. You break one of these things on a modern car and it will cost you hundreds. Modern cars are WAY crapier than almost any car from the 80's. And than I am not even talking about electric cars which, once the market has settled and people have figured it out, will be worthless after just 6-7 years. You thought cars like the Peugeot 605 or Alfa 166 depreciated fast? Electric cars will depreciate even faster than that. Modern cars are only good if you have a large bank account.

1980s cars also broke down constantly. They were cheaper to fix but left you stranded on the side of the road way more often. It was a miracle if you got 100,000 miles out of any American car.

The Pinto was a death trap at a time when any small car was pretty much a death trap. Statistically, the death rate was similar to something like a Chevette or Gremlin and better than the VW Beetle, Toyota, or Honda from the time.
