Manual steering does go back if everything is OK, and it's not problematic at all.for a long distance drivng, because when the car is in motion the weight of steering disspears. It's great to drive, and I prefer it over electric steering in new cars.

Cool video. You missed the driver's crotch vent and floorboard high beam switch, though. Also, tape decks were not easier to operate 😂
They were notoriously finicky and prone to eating their tapes. We used to joke that a No. 2 pencil was called that because it had two uses: writing, and re-spooling the tape into the cassette after the tape player got jammed.

For all you people born after 1990, to differentiate so people know what your talking about, 8 tracks were called cartrages.
Cassettes tapes were smaller reel to reel.
    So nobody gets them confused.

"Manual steering systems lack the self centering feature"
Not really. If you let go of the steering wheel, it will recenter itself. Just with physics. You just have to be moving forward.

Danielle, my 2002 B5.5 Volkswagen Passat has both a CD player and cassette player although I have a Bluetooth cassette adapter for the songs that I want to play on my iPhone.

I reckon vent windows died off because of the cost of manufacture. Much easier for the factory to install one big window in the door.

Lol the crazy part is that I own a mk1 golf and I have everything that is in the past, like carburettor, manual crank window no A.C no power steering.....

Manual windows suck, I have them on my 2001 Commodore, on hot days you have to walk around the car and wind them down, and do the same of winding them up, as opposed to clicking a button, without nostalgia, all you have is reality

    • @AdoptedHistory

My first car had ALL these features, except for the bench. And yes, fine tuning choke settings and/or throttle inputs for smooth starting in very different conditions took some training. But then it became second nature. Now, there are some small errors in your video, eight tracks were even simpler to use than Phillips cassettes, but had other - major - drawbacks. And non PS cars had the same self righting steering function, this made possible on all cars by the steering geometry (the wheels’ caster angle). Also, even with power steering, there is a mechanical connection from steering wheel to the front wheels. It the assistance fails, it is still possible to steer. But the steering becomes very heavy.

if yours had a bench seat, it would have been like you were driving a fast sofa!

I would not consider my 1997 Toyota Hilux as classic ute it has quarter windows (vents) which are still come on a 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 series on the single cab ute getting back to my Hilux manual windows cacassette player and my 2004 Mazda Bravo ute still had a cassette player radio my Hilux has a carburator and an automatic choke so before you say these features have disappeared research makes a big difference l know you yanks think the world revolves the USA researching your videos makes a difference and there are many commercial vehicles with some of these features that have as you said have disappeared and with my Hilux which is 27 years the crank windows are original and so is the carburator has not been removed and they both still work well well after its a Toyota which are designed to last for ever which my Hilux will

Old cars were INFINITELY better than modern cars, which are little more than rolling computers.
