  • A fix for Conky not starting on your build a pi system. Most of the time, it is not a Conky issue at all but rather a GPS issue that is causing the problems. Let's take a look at how to solve both.

    God bless you Jason! Sorry I bothered you on the blog. NOOB is a sophomore now. Display resolution was Issue 1 and not finding this video was Issue 2. You're the Best I had tried a different build and your dedication to this project proves itself in spades.

    Thank you, Jason, I just got the GPS on Monday and reloaded 3 times with this issue. I followed your video and as always right on the money. Thank you for all you do, definitely my favorite channel!! I am setting mine up to use with the IC-705 that I received as a gift.

    Very Nice. I just noticed this happening over the weekend. Thought it was something I did as I was doing some new things with my Pi and had installed some other software(Which I will have a video soon). Good to know it wasn't me and there is a fix. I will give it a go. Thanks Jason.

    Excellent help Jason! I did Build-A-Pi V3 and sure enough, no Conky! I've been fighting with the GPS (the one on the pigtail that you recommended a few episodes back) and couldn't get it to work. I followed things step-by-step and sure enough, it tells me that I am in DM26IF11, just as it should. Running the NIST clock at time.gov, it says that I am now consistently way less than a second off from Coordinated Universal Time. Success! Linux is a bit of a struggle for me - I lived through DOS & WATFIV but there are some really sticky problems that I need help with. This was one. Thanks es 73 de Mark, W6MW!

    This was frustrating the heck out of me - thanks for digging into the root cause here Jason! In my case with a Pi 4, I had to run a usb extension block out of one of the USB 2.0 slots to avoid using either of the two USB 3.0 ports on the pi - I saw you mention that in another video the USB 3.0 ports adversely affect the gps operation. However, though I now see a few satellites showing up on xgps (where before it was completely blank) none are in a "fixed" red state nor have I ever seen my grid square appear in the conky display pane. Time to reboot ... no change. I'm also noticing that the green led no longer flashes. This gps dongle is a real pain!

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try putting the GPS next to a window or take the Pi/GPS outside for a bit to see if it improves. Another option is to use the GPS on your mobile th-cam.com/video/rkmQxvT8BpQ/w-d-xo.html Cell service not required for this to work.

    Ha - I had this issue at the beginning - maybe back in May. I have 1 pi specifically for shack use so dont have a GPS connected to it. I mod'ed the script to just put out my hardcoded grid square. Going to have a look at your fix to integrate it into my mobile pi - GPS never locks in the basement shack. Love your content! Have one of your pack antennas on the bench ready to be built (and get tons of comments on the Covid 19 Veteran patch i wear on my hat). 73 KC1NAM

    I did some experimentation & I believe (90% confidence) that the gpsd service starts before some resource is ready, causing it to hang. I resolved it without having to purge/reinstall gpsd.
    In /etc/system/multi-user.target.wants/gpsd.service, added in the [Service] sec
    tion, before ExecStart:
    ExecStartPre=/bin/sleep 20
    Then, reloaded the service:
    sudo systemctl daemon-reload
    On the next reboot, gpsd nor conky hung.

      @KM4ACK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the advice. BAP 3.0.6 just released and we handle the GPS display a bit differently. It should resolve this problem going forward. If not, I may take your approach.

    When you want to uninstall - unplug the GPS dongle it will then go quick. I think that it's still got a file open or something and waits for a timeout else. I also have had a similar GPS issue for a few weeks now but I'm running an older version of GPSD on Ubuntu. It seems like a timing issue to me. I'm not sure what has changed there were so many different updates I guess it will be solved on it's own sooner or later. In the past I was able to either do sudo service gpsd restart or unplug and replug and then do sudo service gpsd restart and it seemed to work. What I have noticed in dmesg is this: "cdc_acm 5-1:1.0: failed to set dtr/rts" after the dongle was plugged in... Also seems like it does this when it cannot get a lock...

    i ran into this problem with my pi build. I did everything to the letter and it worked. however the next day after doing this i experience same issue, typed cgps in terminal and now it shows n/a under all exempt status where it says no fix. This Conky issue has been a real hassle, but get this Jason. I followed your instructions and it worked like a charm on 2 of my installs. Sat down tonight to do the 3rd one and everything seems to work but when I run GPSD to confirm, I get this error " gpsd:ERROR: can't run with neither control socket nor devices" xgps shows data and Conky displays the gridsquare just fine. Until I reboot. Then I'm back to no gps in Conky. xgps still shows data. Weird right? I should add that after a few minutes, Conky pops up the gridsquare but gpsd still throws the same error.

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is really odd. Maybe try unplugging the GPS on the trouble system during the uninstall. The plug it back in before reinstalling gpsd.

    I have run through this video multiple times but still do not get response from the GPS. Conky is displaying but just does not show the Gridsquare and shows NO GPS. When I run cgps no data is shown. I am wondering if the dongle has gone bad. It worked at one time before I did the latest instructions on installing the build-a-pi. I may just buy one of the newer units with the remote antenna.
    I notice there is a program on the Ham menu called Conky but nothing seems to happen when I click on it. What should happen?

    Excellent job Jason! Thank you for being so responsive.
    The small BT GPS module that you recommended works great - ordered it using your link. I plan to put the R-Pi under my front center seat in my truck and access it using iPad/VNC. To avoid GPS reception issues from that location, I found this module with the same U-Blox 7 chipset and a longer USB cable (w/ mag mount) to remote the sensor up onto the dash. Both sensors worked great when I tested them this evening.

      I should have added that the Grid Square now appears in Conky. Not likely to change as I don't operate away from the shack. Another question: Is the GPS now doing the time thing or is the Pi still using the ntp?

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      cgps & xgps install as part of BAP when you choose to install the GPS. You can install manually by running "sudo apt install gpsd-clients" The pi should be able to get time from the internet if connected and from the GPS when not connected to the internet.

    • @KM4ACK
      @KM4ACK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BAP doesn't currently support bluetooth GPS. You will need to add it manually. I did a video a while back that shows you how to add GPS manually. It was for a USB GPS but you should be able to gather enough info to point you in the right direction th-cam.com/video/Oag9qYuhMGg/w-d-xo.html I don't own a bluetooth GPS but think you will only need to mod the /etc/default/gpsd file after you have the bluetooth connected and associated with rfcomm0
