I run a cheap GL-INET ar-150 travel router as my portable base's point of connection. This way I can use a 3G modem, Tether to a phone, or configure it to connect to a mobile hotspot/coffee shop wifi/hotel wifi if im travelling. Meanwhile everything ham related included the pi just has to connect to the one wifi device. Works an absolute treat, definitely recommend if running a pi as a hotspot isn't ticking boxes for you.
As I have said many times before, Jason saved my Pi from the trash can when he came out with the first Build-A-Pi!! Now I have two, one in the pack with the 817ND and one hooked to my FT-757GX in the shack. Juddie - WD8WV

Another great video! I would argue for installing the hotspot tools even for home use though. On backup power you can use your PI remotely without a WiFi router on. Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it!

Thanks Jason, I see I'll have to go thru the update script and add a few more features in my Pi build. I am still having problem with Maidenhead display in Cronky getting NO GPS message. I ordered a new GPS dongle from Amazon just in case. I finally got VNC to connect my PI to my Amazon Fire Tablet (7 inch 7th generation) thanks to one of your videos. I had a problem connecting until I got into the realVNC help screens. In my VNC account I had to change my connection sign in preference from Unix password to VNC Server password and make a new Password just to connect with.
Double check that you have GPS data coming into the Pi by running *cgps* If so and Conky still isn't displaying the maidenhead, head over to the forum and we will try to help you figure it out. groups.io/g/KM4ACK-Pi/topics
@@KM4ACK Tried the steps from your "Help Conky won't start" video. Still "NO GPS" in conky. Running cgps doesn't fill the table and I get only 1 or 2 satellite seen 0 used. What I find suspicious is the GPS U-blox7 dongle LED only flash once at boot up and does not blink while PI is running. I have ordered a (G72 G-Mouse, Better Than vk-17?) replacement that arrives tomorrow. If that doesn't do I'll head to the forum. Tnx 73 AB1OP
Quick question. I have done the complete setup and have everything working well except that my GPS does not start up at start up. I have to use the command sudo killall -9 gpsd after with the GPS will begin to collect data. Do you know how I can fix this?
NBEMS is heavily used here in PA. Several weekly nets. Also used by AMRRON. Good idea to go over all the software in the script, which is awesome by the way.
I knew it was used heavily in certain areas of the country but I couldn't remember exactly where. I have played with it a bit in the past and it works well.

Hello Jason, this video is somewhat outdated. What are your updates on the new "Rsapberrypi OS" I have the new OS installed butmany of these functions do not seem to work. Would love to get my PI in gear with ham radio.
Does anyone have an issue with rpi3b+ latest grid tracker update and wsjt-x. I can load up grid tracker but when I then try to load wsjt-x system locks up I have to unplug power. If I load wsjt-x without grid tracker it works fine.
I'm really green with Linux and Pi's but built the super pi with case and 256ssd and a friend downloaded a good image and bunch of ham files you recomended. It seems to have FLDIGI files but not be installed. ? (On the little micro ssd from my buddy with fast internet, I'm a very rural ham). So, I should probably get the SSD working first. Then transfer this entire image and files. Then, install FLDIGI ? Also, is the fan supposed to run very often on that super case I bought for it ? I hear it running when I first run it on, shuts down, can't hear after that. Wish there was a temp measurement routine for the ICs that have the heat sinks.
Great video Jason!!! I guess I need to start over!! LOL I pretty much installed everything, I am one of those hams that if it is available I want it!! LOL I really don't do satellites, but I like having the software to track them. I will have to rethink things for sure and trim down. I just hate going thru the total new SD, new Buster and then install the Build-A-Pi script. My station is up and running, I even tried an experiment and just did an upgrade and update on the operating system (Buster) instead of a new install just to see if it would cause a problem. So far no problem. Before, I had just updated the Build-A-Pi script using your update script, then I saw I had a problem with FT8. Once I made a contact, and clicked the log button, I lost my soundcard. I would have to go and right click the volume and recheck (even though it showed checked) the USB sound in and the USB sound out to be able to transmit again (VOX-no rig control). But once I did the Buster upgrade and update, that fixed that issue. Just so much to understand and learn, I don't see how you keep up with all that. It doesn't really hurt anything to install it all but some guys only want what they need for certain applications. I just tried to break it down so they would know what they needed and what the could leave out. Glad your system is running smoothly now :-)
Hi Jason: Thank you so much for all your work. I have read some of your comments about Bullseye and the raspberry pi and your latest build. I totally get you not being able to support the build a pi for the older firmware Raspian OS and the newer Bullseye firmware. I hadn't played with my pi for a while and got it out and used WSJTX and found a problem with the WSJTX software. It kept skipping over the 73 round of reports and people kept trying to get a 73 out of me. I discovered that my laptop and desktop were doing the exact thing and I updated WSJTX on my desktop and the problem went away. long story short when I went to look for updates on the pi it reminded me that we have what we have on the old build OS. I guess for dummies like me I believe I can update the OS ok but getting the build a pi back on it slips my memory. couldn't find anything on Gethub under KM4ACK do you have any suggestions?
Hi Bruce, for now BAP still supports Buster. Update to the latest version and you should be able to update WSJTX. It will give you a warning that you are running an older system and should consider upgrading. If you choose to move to Bullseye, don't try upgrading Buster to Bullseye. Start with a clean copy of Bullseye to avoid a lot of frustration. The link for BAP is github.com/km4ack/pi-build

I thought I had this thing up and running and I did till I bumped into the problem with WSJTX skiping over TX 5 and people kept 73ing me back because they were looking for a 73 the newest program does seem to work, but differently than the original program. It just says RR73 and still skips over the TX5 step; it does this on my desk top too. Any way I tried installing Bullseye and It seems to work but my pi 4 model B with 4gb memory goes into cold poured tar mode and takes forever for anything to load. Type a password or anything in and sit back and wait a minute or two for the password to load I usually test stuff by going to the web browser and going to TH-cam and playing videos. Buster did admirably in the past but now if you load TH-cam it immediately crashes the browser and you have to re-start it. What I did is start with a fresh card and formatted it and loaded Bullseye on it and started from scratch on the pi and something is wrong and the pi is real slow and I mean unusably slow (I have not build a pi on Bullseye just the full install of Bullseye). I put my old card back in with Buster and whatever I had the latest of build a pi and everything seemed to work as before but TH-cam wont work at all and crashes the browser. I really don't care about TH-cam on the pi because I want to mainly run the digital modes with it. I almost have a working system and hope some day to make it to the field to give portable a try. I so thank you for your efforts and as a past PLC programmer I know the hour's one can spend doing it! I remember enjoying Christmas with the family with a laptop in my lap programing stuff for work and saving the co. a lot of money just to get a project completed. I plan to give to your site regardless as I appreciate your efforts and know how bad burn out can be. Thanks again. I don't know if bullseye re-wrote instructions to the bios and permanently changed something in the pi? I did think TH-cam worked perfectly in Buster and now it won't when I put my original pi build sd card back in? anyway just thought I would let you know what is up and the pi now runs really slow in Bullseye and ok in Buster except it wont run videos in Buster now and will not load a video in Bullseye or much of anything else, or not at least in this lifetime. The Raspberry pi folks have maybe gotten something wrong or I didn't read enough first and did something wrong. I am currently making a new Bullseye sd card just incase that was a problem and will try it again. Once I have Bullseye back on an other card. I am not sure how to get the Pi build back on the card. Is there a place to get the download?

When I go to the update tool it goes to a script and it seems to infer that I have the latest update of BAP I don't see a list with the check marks on the programs and weather they are up to date. So I was wondering if there is a script to update WSJTX? Or am I going to sit this thing out and wait till they have a version of Bullseye that will run ok on my pi. Anyway no big deal I at least have a project that will keep me stretching my old mind a bit and when I feel the need for challenge I can play with all this ham stuff I love so much. I watched our earlier video about the Argon M.2 case and picked one up. I never could get the SSD image to boot so I set it aside. I dusted it off and tried again, and finally succeeded after completely deleting the partitions and starting over. I did not realize Bullseye was out, which seems to break a few things. It took several passes of the installer to get the apps and menus loaded, but Conky does not auto-start and many of the apps fail to start altogether. I think it's due to the retirement of the "pi" default user.
"pi" is still required for BAP to work correctly as of 02MAY2022. We are in a beta testing on Patreon right now and will be pushing the beta out to the forum in another week or so. Once tested there, it will be released as stable code and the user name of "pi" will no longer be required.
Jason R. Terrell, I have a Pi 3b plus and I have almost everything installed on mine. Doesn't seem to be an issue so far, but I get on for an hour or so, don't know what it would be like if I operated it for 4, 5, 6 hours or more. Juddie - WD8WV
How to I recompile Direwolf to support CM108 PTT? I'm using a DRA-50 which works great with a standard Direwolf / Xastir build on AX.25 (1200-9600 baud). But it keys PTT on the CM119 GPIO pin 3. So in Direwolf I add the following parameter: "PTT CM108 3 /dev/hidraw0" and everything works great. Build-a-Pi script compiles Direwolf without this support. I'd like to recompile of upgrade Direwolf to a DEV build for testing. Thanks.
For now follow the directions on the direwolf github site. There is an issue ticket for this to be corrected in a future version of BAP github.com/km4ack/pi-build/issues/243
Hi Jason, many thanks for another great video. However I disagree concerning hotspot and hotspot tools. I think that even installed in a shack and never taken out in the field the raspberry needs these two apps. Once electrical power goes down your WiFi at home won’t work anymore. In this situation you will not be able to use your pi unless it is able to build its own WiFi hotspot. So every single one of my raspberrys gets these two tools installed.
Jason, I'm having a problem with my Build a Pi install, and I'm a total noob to the Pi stuff. After I select the options I want, and after the install when it calls for a reboot, I can no longer connect to wifi. Hovering the mouse over the two red X's I get a pop-up that says "no wireless interface found". Also, when I open Build a Pi, it says it wants to scan to see what I have installed. Since there is no OK (or similar) button on that window, hitting ENTER just closes that window, and nothing happens. And with no wifi, I can't download the updated version of Build a Pi when that window pops up as well. Thanks in advance for any advice! Bob, W0BNC.
More than likely the hotspot is engaged. Open hotspot tools and disable the hotspot. Your wifi should return to normal after reboot. Lance, Jason saved my Raspberry Pi 3b Plus from the trash can. I had the Pi for a few years and was trying to learn all I could about Pi's and then finding ham software I could run on it. I finally gave up, set it up on the shelf, and was really thinking of chucking it into the garbage can. I had had enough. Then I stumbled onto Jason's TH-cam channel and saw the first Build-A-Pi video, I took mine of the shelf and followed his instruction, added an new operating system, found his script and the rest is history. Now I have two Pi 3b Plus', one in the back pack with my Yaesu FT-817ND and one hooked up in the shack to my Yaesu FT-757GX. Juddie - WD8WV

Once you have a grasp on it, move on to the next thing that interest you. Seems you added BPQ (pilinbpq), coul you consider addiing QtSoundModem and QtTermTCP too? QtSoundModem has a GUI with Waterfall wich is good for HF. 73 Jouko OH5RM
This is great. But I tried installing everything last night and parts of hamlib aren't installing. I'm guessing Jason is onto this but also suppose that it's being caused by hamlib itself being broken (beyond his control). Anybody have an idea how long it takes for these glitches with hamlib to be resolved?
Personally would recommend experimenting with installing linux on android device (preferably degoogled for ~30% more battery life) and ditching Pi entirely. One less thing to charge and carry...
Do Linux such as Unbutu has to be installed first, or the app will install all of what is needed? I got an Raspberry Pi 4, 8 Gb version. Also have a 32 Gb and a 128 Gb SD Card I can use. Thanks.
Hi Jason, regarding the GPS it will be nice to automatically change the gridsquare in wsjt-x or js8call while moving on the field. Another solution might be to use the gps of the mobile phone over bluetooth. The NEO7 GNSS chips are working now? Thank you, 73! DE1CTL
Check out JS8Call Utilities by M0IAX th-cam.com/video/5pbF5h_aCgI/w-d-xo.html It has the ability to update the GPS in JS8Call automatically. Don't know of anything that will do the same thing for wsjtx
I use a 32GB micro SD card on my Raspberry Pi 3b Plus. The Conky shows I have only used like 14 GB of space. I haven't setup a 64 GB yet, but have been thinking about doing that to mine. Juddie - WD8WV

Hi Jason. I used the Build a Pi setup and it's a great all-in-one setup, but I'm not getting any signal (Gridsquare in Conky won't update) from my GPS dongle (same as you've mentioned in the past). I've gone through the config files and everything seems to be correct, the only difference I've seen is that the gspd file has DEVICES="/dev/serial/by-id/usb-u-blox_AG__-www.u-blox.com_u-blox_7-__GPS_GNSS_Receiver-if00" as the USB GPS dongle, which it has gotten from GPSUpdate.
Never mind. I think adding this comment forced it to start working. Not sure why it did start working. I had it powered up with the same configuration for a while yesterday afternoon into the late evening. Darn technology. But the connection seems very flakey. It works then doesn’t work (basing this off of Conky’s Gridsquare info).

You need to activate the VNC server built into the Raspberry Pi OS and install a VNC client on your other device (phone, tablet, pc). Then use the other device to connect to the Pi at it's IP address. Both the pi and the other device need to be on the same network. After you connect to the Pi, use your pi user/pass when prompted. By default it will be pi/raspberry
Definitely Build a Pi. I found the run conditions of Ham Pi (i.e. running BOINC) too onerous. Heck, it’s like CPU cycle rent, which seems way out of proportion to what is delivered, that is other people’s software in an image and not a useful app provided by the author that you run continuously.

I really don't care about TH-cam on the pi because I want to mainly run the digital modes with it. I almost have a working system and hope some day to make it to the field to give portable a try. I so thank you for your efforts and as a past PLC programmer I know the hour's one can spend doing it! I remember enjoying Christmas with the family with a laptop in my lap programing stuff for work and saving the co. a lot of money just to get a project completed. I plan to give to your site regardless as I appreciate your efforts and know how bad burn out can be. Thanks again. I don't know if bullseye re-wrote instructions to the bios and permanently changed something in the pi? I did think TH-cam worked perfectly in Buster and now it won't when I put my original pi build sd card back in? anyway just thought I would let you know what is up and the pi now runs really slow in Bullseye and ok in Buster except it wont run videos in Buster now and will not load a video in Bullseye or much of anything else, or not at least in this lifetime. The Raspberry pi folks have maybe gotten something wrong or I didn't read enough first and did something wrong. I am currently making a new Bullseye sd card just incase that was a problem and will try it again. Once I have Bullseye back on an other card. I am not sure how to get the Pi build back on the card. Is there a place to get the download?

When I go to the update tool it goes to a script and it seems to infer that I have the latest update of BAP I don't see a list with the check marks on the programs and weather they are up to date. So I was wondering if there is a script to update WSJTX? Or am I going to sit this thing out and wait till they have a version of Bullseye that will run ok on my pi. Anyway no big deal I at least have a project that will keep me stretching my old mind a bit and when I feel the need for challenge I can play with all this ham stuff I love so much. I watched our earlier video about the Argon M.2 case and picked one up. I never could get the SSD image to boot so I set it aside. I dusted it off and tried again, and finally succeeded after completely deleting the partitions and starting over. I did not realize Bullseye was out, which seems to break a few things. It took several passes of the installer to get the apps and menus loaded, but Conky does not auto-start and many of the apps fail to start altogether. I think it's due to the retirement of the "pi" default user.
"pi" is still required for BAP to work correctly as of 02MAY2022. We are in a beta testing on Patreon right now and will be pushing the beta out to the forum in another week or so. Once tested there, it will be released as stable code and the user name of "pi" will no longer be required.

How to I recompile Direwolf to support CM108 PTT? I'm using a DRA-50 which works great with a standard Direwolf / Xastir build on AX.25 (1200-9600 baud). But it keys PTT on the CM119 GPIO pin 3. So in Direwolf I add the following parameter: "PTT CM108 3 /dev/hidraw0" and everything works great. Build-a-Pi script compiles Direwolf without this support. I'd like to recompile of upgrade Direwolf to a DEV build for testing. Thanks.
For now follow the directions on the direwolf github site. There is an issue ticket for this to be corrected in a future version of BAP github.com/km4ack/pi-build/issues/243

Hi Jason, many thanks for another great video. However I disagree concerning hotspot and hotspot tools. I think that even installed in a shack and never taken out in the field the raspberry needs these two apps. Once electrical power goes down your WiFi at home won’t work anymore. In this situation you will not be able to use your pi unless it is able to build its own WiFi hotspot. So every single one of my raspberrys gets these two tools installed.
You make a great argument! Like you, I install hotspot/hotspot tools on all of mine. I like it being there, just in case :-)
Jason, I'm having a problem with my Build a Pi install, and I'm a total noob to the Pi stuff. After I select the options I want, and after the install when it calls for a reboot, I can no longer connect to wifi. Hovering the mouse over the two red X's I get a pop-up that says "no wireless interface found". Also, when I open Build a Pi, it says it wants to scan to see what I have installed. Since there is no OK (or similar) button on that window, hitting ENTER just closes that window, and nothing happens. And with no wifi, I can't download the updated version of Build a Pi when that window pops up as well. Thanks in advance for any advice! Bob, W0BNC.
More than likely the hotspot is engaged. Open hotspot tools and disable the hotspot. Your wifi should return to normal after reboot. Hey Jason. I'm a new ham operator just earned my technician a month ago and then my general 3-22-21. I just made a ham clock window on my raspi4 thanks for that video. I really need to go back and start watching the beginner videos. I'm new to raspberry pi as well. How in the world can I learn this stuff? I absolutely love it but it can be quite overwhelming and confusing.

Lance, Jason saved my Raspberry Pi 3b Plus from the trash can. I had the Pi for a few years and was trying to learn all I could about Pi's and then finding ham software I could run on it. I finally gave up, set it up on the shelf, and was really thinking of chucking it into the garbage can. I had had enough. Then I stumbled onto Jason's TH-cam channel and saw the first Build-A-Pi video, I took mine of the shelf and followed his instruction, added an new operating system, found his script and the rest is history. Now I have two Pi 3b Plus', one in the back pack with my Yaesu FT-817ND and one hooked up in the shack to my Yaesu FT-757GX. Juddie - WD8WV

Hey Lance, congrats on your license! This digital stuff can be confusing in the beginning. I suggest picking one thing you want to do and start with that. Once you have a grasp on it, move on to the next thing that interest you. This is great. But I tried installing everything last night and parts of hamlib aren't installing. I'm guessing Jason is onto this but also suppose that it's being caused by hamlib itself being broken (beyond his control). Anybody have an idea how long it takes for these glitches with hamlib to be resolved?

Personally would recommend experimenting with installing linux on android device (preferably degoogled for ~30% more battery life) and ditching Pi entirely. One less thing to charge and carry...
Do Linux such as Unbutu has to be installed first, or the app will install all of what is needed? I got an Raspberry Pi 4, 8 Gb version. Also have a 32 Gb and a 128 Gb SD Card I can use. Thanks.
Yes, you must first install Linux. While you can install Ubuntu, using RasberryPi OS will ensure compatibility with all this software.

Hi Jason, regarding the GPS it will be nice to automatically change the gridsquare in wsjt-x or js8call while moving on the field. Another solution might be to use the gps of the mobile phone over bluetooth. The NEO7 GNSS chips are working now?

It was recently reported that it wasn't working. I am looking into it and hope to fix soon.

Hi Jason. I used the Build a Pi setup and it's a great all-in-one setup, but I'm not getting any signal (Gridsquare in Conky won't update) from my GPS dongle (same as you've mentioned in the past). I've gone through the config files and everything seems to be correct, the only difference I've seen is that the gspd file has DEVICES="/dev/serial/by-id/usb-u-blox_AG__-www.u-blox.com_u-blox_7-__GPS_GNSS_Receiver-if00" as the USB GPS dongle, which it has gotten from GPSUpdate.
Never mind. I think adding this comment forced it to start working. Not sure why it did start working. I had it powered up with the same configuration for a while yesterday afternoon into the late evening. Darn technology.
But the connection seems very flakey. It works then doesn’t work (basing this off of Conky’s Gridsquare info).

You need to activate the VNC server built into the Raspberry Pi OS and install a VNC client on your other device (phone, tablet, pc). Then use the other device to connect to the Pi at it's IP address. Both the pi and the other device need to be on the same network. After you connect to the Pi, use your pi user/pass when prompted. By default it will be pi/raspberry

Definitely Build a Pi. I found the run conditions of Ham Pi (i.e. running BOINC) too onerous. Heck, it’s like CPU cycle rent, which seems way out of proportion to what is delivered, that is other people’s software in an image and not a useful app provided by the author that you run continuously.
