This show took me by surprise...the 2 guys playing the brothers were phenomenal no matter what emotion they were portraying and Javier Bardem is an Icon and so scary in this 😅 I kept thinking the one older brother was Sebastian Stan!
I just watched a whole psychologist analyze the testimonies of sexual abuse from both brothers and he concluded that the way they told the stories and carried themselves through it was consistent with people who really were abused and had signs of PTSD. I believe the brothers went crazy with the money because they were trying to forget what they did and cope with the money spending. I believe they truly went through what they said they did, but I do not think how they handled it was oKay. Maybe they do have mental illness but I wouldn’t be surprised due to the trauma they could have been going through during childhood. Trauma stunts growth
@@Aliyah1290 Erik claimed that when he was a child he put cinnamon in his fathers coffee so that his ejaculate wouldn't taste as bad. He also claimed that he began to put lemon juice on his own food in an attempt to remove his sense of taste.
Well said. As a childhood sexual abuse survivor myself, I’ve watched their testimonies and it definitely is in the way they carry themselves and recall the events that makes me believe them. Thank you for pointing that out.
I think the show did a good job at showing how everything was transpiring at THAT time… the show seemed split on showing them as victims vs monsters just how back then everyone was split on believing them as victims and monsters.
Everyone back then knew they were monsters. It’s only recently that some people (mostly Zoomers who weren’t around) think they might be victims. Casey Anthony and Yolanda Saldivar also have documentaries trying to trick Zoomers into thinking they were innocent

The abuse is not remotely contested. There are a bunch of family members that saw the abuse as well as boys outside of the family that were also abused by the dad. It is only contested by people who know nothing about the case.
Dude... From top to bottom, the acting was insanely good. Even the closing attorney and juror lady and her replacement.... Even those "side" parts were phenomenal. I was very impressed with this series as a piece of historical art, or whatever you want to call it. Such a good series.
Javier Bardem probably gives one of his top 5 performances in Ep 6 when he monologues about his childhood.Utterly disturbing and heartbreaking at the same time
35 mins. One shot. Also when Erik was in the stand, was great acting. Cuz the whole point was for him to look like he's acting. So hes an actor, playing a character that is supposed to look like he's acting. That's not easy.
The sexual abuse was not allowed to be admitted in the second trial and when asked many jurors admitted afterward, had that been presented, it would have changed their verdict.

That’s true, however it’s an extremely common thing for victims of same sex child molestation to have conflicted feelings on their orientation. Often times, it almost feels like they were never given the option to choose what they liked, but grew to tolerate it or see it as their preference. It’s an absolute strip of power that affects you mentally and I know from experience.

You can be gay without being sexually assaulted, that doesn’t determine your sexuality. It’s also quite disrespectful to change a living person’s sexuality when you’re tryna tell their story, especially such an important one. Erik himself pointed out how offensive it is to imply that sexual abuse turns someone gay. He clarified that he himself is not gay, and such assumptions about abuse victims are harmful and misleadingHeres also what the brothers had to say about it: "The prosecutor brought that up because I was sexually molested and he felt in his own thinking that if I was sodomised by my father that I must have enjoyed it and therefore I must be gay.” He continued: “And people that are gay out there must be sexually molested or they wouldn’t be. It was upsetting to hear, but I am not gay. But a lot of gay people write and feel connected to me.” Lyle then added: "A problem at the trial was the gender bias, that because they were dealing with males and an incest family ... there was this perception that maybe it was something that he wanted, something that he allowed to happen." Another said: "I don’t understand how in the show Eric is portrayed as essentially a gay man while in all the interviews with him he clearly states that he’s not. I know the creator Ryan Murphy is gay and maybe he preferred that narrative? But shouldn’t it stay close to reality? Confusing."
As I was watching episode 5 with Erik / Cooper Koch telling his abuse story, I was thinking this guy deserves an Emmy just for this, then at the end as the camera does a closeup on his face as he looks at his lawyer with a look, of wondering if she believes his story. Also, Javier Bardem as Jose their father, I mean I have thought he was phenomenal since seeing him play the Villain in No Country for Old Men. I go back and forth believing their story, then when Lyle is giving his story to over the prison phone, I was thinking she's going to write a book, and this makes him look like a psychopath. Also him asking people to make up a story about his dad assaulting them as well. Great the way they told the story from several POVs, the brothers, the witnesses, the spectators, the parents via family and counseling sessions.
Javier Barden was great with the Cuban accent too. He’s from Spain and his original Spanish accent is pretty thick but he did it great! And his whole acting too of course. He was so scary.

If it was true instead of trying to make it like a mafia hit and fake crying “somebody killed our parents” they would have came out with the truth on the night of the crime and told the cops what went down. They didn’t do that and tried to cover evidence.
The genious part of the series is how it starts like a rich spoiled dudes cray cray light story and makes a phenomenal turn in the episode 5 (that I consider Oscar and Emmy award worthy for both actors, director, dialogue) and moves on to become PHENOMENAL INCREDIBLE SERIES.I m currently going all in the rabbit hole trying to figure out what the hell happened like….really 😮❤

Being abused doesn’t give you the right to spend weeks planning a double murder and then go through with it. Especially as grown ups. They were not kids. They grown men when they decided to kill their parents
Was that in one take? I swear the entire episode was one take. If not entire, the vast majority...I just kept watching wondering when they were going to change camera angle, and they never did. And the fact that the dude literally cried on command in the middle of that scene was amazing.

I was confused after watching the series as it seemed to portray that Lyle came up with the idea of the sexual abuse story and got Erik to play along at trial, but if you watch the real trial their testimonies both seem very raw and genuine.
This was just to show you that they brought you to one side to feel sorry for them and in the end people have been deceived with their lies and it is in fact that they lied and all the phone calls made in prison is what made them guilty which is true as well, so whether how nice they were or not the facts are still facts dramatizing their story. THEY LIED. Yes, it’s just you feeling sorry so you shouldn’t

I felt like the actor who played Lyle looks so much like a young Matthew Lawrence that I thought it was him and then realised it can't be as he is way older now.
This season was a bit lighter and less eerie, really loved how they portrayed both sides of the kids and parents. It really made me feel conflicted. I feel like they definitely deserved some time in prison but idk if they derserved this long of a sentence.
The show is heavily fictionalized. Some of the events are completely untrue - like the reason why Jill Lansing left the case. She left because she had a young daughter who she was missing out on. She used to bring the daughter to her sessions with Lyle and the little girl adored Lyle. Lyle used to call her "Jilly". She also stayed on for a while long to prepare the new lawyers that were coming in, she didn't just bolt like that.
@@xxwhispersxx2856You are pretending like there was not an almost 4 year GAP between the trials when Jill was free to “spend time with her family” AND pretending like Jill and Leslie were willing to work for free. There was no more money by the second trial. Leslie threatened to quit if the judge did not let her get paid 250k with tax payer dollars and eventually accepted the 150K of tax payer money instead. Jill continued to work and the court dockets reflect she worked other cases during the second trial so that was a lie about her wanting time to spend with her family. Lyle demolished his entire defense with his lying and attempts to get witnesses to lie under oath for him. Juries do not evaluate proven liars well
I've always felt so much sympathy for the abuse they suffered; I think it was their actions afterwards that sealed their fate, not the killing of their abusive parents.
Duh!!! I mean they started this whole thing with a lie and fake crying… “somebody killed our parents!!!!” When you start off lying don’t be shocked when people don’t believe you! Had they told the truth the moment the police got there what happen that night things would have been different. They couldn’t do that because the truth was they did what they did for money and to get under Jose strict thumb. However they tried to cover up their crimes by making it look like it was a mifia hit because their dad was powerful man in the music industry. When that didn’t work they went to the abuse excuse.
lol some people here mad because Murphy didn't go for easy answers... They literally portrayed all the awful abuse towards the boys and Kitty. If anything, Murphy showed that Jose was a scary psycho who changed according to circumstances, when the change fit his agenda. He only started to be 'better' when he decided that he had to make it in politics himself, because 'the boys were disappointment' but the 'change' was superficial, exactly as sociopaths act, it's literally in the show. On the other hand, Murphy also asks interesting questions that blind cheerleaders of the brothers don't want to answer, but we need to ask this, as even if your side is sure you are 10000% right, it's not that simple. The only truth we know for sure in this case is that we really don't know what happened there, inside this house for all these years, yes, there was abuse and control by Jose part, and it is shown brutally on the show, but the fact is, there were also lies and sociopathic behaviors of the boys, and literally other part of their family also said it. This family is to this day divided between believing them vs not believing them, and THAT'S a FACT. If you wanted Murphy to just brainlessly repeat one side of the story, you actually don't understand what makes great TV, and what actually is close to real life - life is always complex, truth is complex in cases like this, and this is what Murphy portrays brilliantly. He asks questions and doesn't give you easy answers, and for me, that was the most accurate portrayal of this whole awful case. Also, two things can exist together. They were abused, and Murphy& co literally showed this, but they were also very, very disturbed young men because they were products of their sick and toxic environment, and Murphy also showed this absolutely brilliantly! For me, it is finally balanced, analytic on a deep level, traumatic, and an excellent show about this case! And Javier Bardem as Jose is absolutely terrifying! He is an abusive sadist in this, so idk what are you talking about!
i agreee, its a great show. the fans are making a big deal about Lyle being portrayed as "evil" but i didnt see that at all...I mean he is a disturbed person obviously, killied his parents? but murphy also shows the abused they suffered, how controling the father was etc.
I AGREE 100 percent and that is why the TWO juries at the first trial could not agree to let them off on a manslaughter charge instead of first degree AFTER 16 DAYS of deliberations. Nobody KNOWS what went on in that house besides the people who LIVED there and the FACT is the live in maids testified under oath they never saw or heard any signs of abuse, Lyle testified he never knew about Jose and Erik and vice versa, and both brothers testified the mom likely did not know. It is impossible all that abuse went on and nobody knew anything but it certainly is possible for people to LIE like the brothers who are proven liars that lied and fake cried to police numerous times, family, friends, and news reporters
From what I got out of what he was trying to do was show 3 solid angles that were or might be the most obvious. Because towards the middle, I was a little confused, but then I noticed it was 3 different ways to tell their story, the parents & the public, if that makes sense.
Agree the last few episodes it just felt confused. Like he doesn’t want to be on the boys’ side he doesn’t want to be on the media’s side he doesn’t want to be on the parents’ side as to not upset anyone on the other sides. I couldn’t tell if he believed the boys or not
What many people don’t understand is that when children are systematically abused like this, they don’t turn into logical sensible people. So yes, Baba Wawa, you are correct…their behavior was definitely odd and unhealthy. They were messed up people. Of course they were. So many people passing judgement, who have no clue what that kind of abuse does to you. It’s discouraging that people aren’t able to make any attempt to understand what it might be like to grow up in that kind of horror show. Had they not been raped and controlled for years, they never would’ve killed anyone.
Exactly! They didn't have normal experiences, ofc you can NEVER be a completely normal person after that kind of trauma and abuse - but they tried their best and now they seem to have become better people. Many victims who are abused have escape fantasies, and since this happened in America, where you just too easily can buy a gun, and it was the 80's where people couldn't seek mental help in the same way.
I did think the series as a whole didn't justify the 9-episode length. That being said, I actually appreciated the series (without any warning) was willing to go back and forth in showing members of the Menendez family as both victims and monsters. To this day, the case is pretty divisive and the show does a good job reflecting that. It's not taking sides.
I cannot believe how so many people write here that Murphy didn't portray the abuse angle enough, and that he showed the parents in a good light. What?! Nonsense! We obviously watched a different show! This show is absolutely brilliant, just as Dahmer's show was, and the portrayal of Jose Menendez is downright terrifying! Javier Bardem is an absolutely amazing actor, that role was brilliantly written and acted!! Jose is portrayed as a terrifying sadist & abuser, and together with Kitty's collaboration, the whole situation in this house is shown to be hell on Earth! So idk what people here watched, and what are they talking about! It was an absolutely brilliant portrayal, complex, and analytic on a deep level, of an awful, toxic family, the breakdown of the marriage, and the complete breakdown of dreams. All the actors were fantastic, but Bardem seriously needs to get a Golden Globe, Emmy & other nominations, he was scary af in this role!

Ep 5 of this miniseries is some of the most fascinating and awesome television I've ever seen. The whole episode is like - or is? - one long take. Incredible. (would love if others know more about this)
I totally agree and felt exactly the same after watching it... Just WOW!!! 50+ minutes in 1 long take without any camera movement, just focussed on Eric recounting the abuse he suffered... His lawyer is in the scene opposite him, but you only see her back for 50 minutes! And yet it's super intense, impossible to look away... All down to a perfext script and some truly amazing acting by Cooper Koch.... I was blown away by it... Literally saying WOW at least 3 times when the episode was finished...
it was a brilliant show that portrayed complex reality that we will NEVER know for sure, no matter what some childish, blind Menendez cheerleaders say! It painted all the perspectives possible - the public perception at first at the beginning of the show which was a brilliant choice, the boys' perspective, the lawyers' experiences, etc. And it absolutely showed brutal abuse in that house. I mean Javier Bardem in this role terrified me more than in the role of Anton Chigurh in No Country for the Old Man! He deserves all the awards for this role, he was just a pure, scary, unpredictable psychopath in this!! All the people who have doubts - I recommend you watch it for Bardem's acting alone, although it has many brutal, disturbing scenes!
Now I just watched the Menendez + Menudo documentary on Peacock. .. OMG. Their Dad was an entertainment exec and with all the abuse stories, MeToo, etc. coming out lately. . . possibly tied to their case
Agreed, I watched it also and I always Knew there was more to the story. And I'm 50, Menudo was my generation and I thought it was weird that the boys were Replaced so often. But we know now Pedos have age preferences.
Just an opinion here...Mabe they had so much rage from all the trauma they went through if it's true and just lost it as they didn't know how else to stop or deal with shame plus ignorance of resources and scared cuz their dad was powerful etc...still not right what they did but I know if the abuse was true their dad would have denied it and put them through hell or killed them etc if they did leave or go to cops
Gotta hand it to Ryan Murphy, he did an excellent job with this and so did the two actors playing Lyle and Erik- I mean they were incredible. But boy was this an emotional ride. I come from the camp of fully believing the boys did it. I wasn’t alive during the first trial. And so it wasn’t until I did my research and the “confession” from the former menudo singer, that I started to think maybe they were really victims of something horrible in that house. But then learning there is a tape with Lyle admitting to making it all up, for me, sadly that’s what you can’t come back from. The only thing that gives me a pause is the menudo confession, but it’s hard when you also know Lyle confessed to making it up, bragged about fooling the jury, and Erik writing a screenplay about killing his parents for money. I know a lot of people want to believe they were abused, but evil people CAN and DO lie about things we’d think just cross the line all the time…especially if their back is against the wall. I think Ryan got it right. They did that in cold blood.
Despite the abuse, they did kill their parents in cold blood. Premaditaded murder. Life without parole is what you get in the us@. A woman who suffers from domestic violence and kills her husband is going to get that same sentence! If they get released then all cases like this one has to be reviewed! C'mon!
I thought they did it back then for the money and after watching the series, I still think the did it for the money. Who spends $750K on random chit and investments on the heels of their parents murders?
The show gave different perspectives. Many things can be true at once, 1. The abuse, 2. The murder was premeditated and driven by money. Erik seemed to be fantasising about killing his parents for a while, him writing a screenplay, they probably wanted to get away from their controlling father but were so used to the lifestyle that they figured the only way to keep the lifestyle and get away from their father was to kill both their parents.
i absolutely hated the show, they misplaced everything on purpose, they were trying to condom them, putting the dad in that positive light when we know from other people's testimonies the dad was a nightmare, he was never even good to his wife let alone the kids. i hated it. the show just couldn't make up its mind about which side to tell, on the one hand, they accept some of the sexual abuse even saying Jose himself was abused then they make the entire show word for word how Ozeil and Creg say it happened, not once was the brother's account of stuff portrayed
I think the show left me conflicted because it didn't take a stance, which was intentional, leaving viewers polarised just like the case does to this day. To say the boys side was never shown is a bit of a stretch since episode 5 was an intimate episode where Erik without interruption (cutting to other scenes) got to tell in detail what happened to him. We are also shown the Princeton expulsion from two POV's leaving it up to the viewer to decide for themselves. It is not the job of the show to choose a side, because it seems there is no clear "this is what happened".

I can’t stand what Ryan Murphy did with this story. He twisted the real events into something they weren’t, sexualizing the relationship between the brothers and forcing a romantic angle that just wasn’t there. It’s not just weird; it’s downright disturbing. It feels like he turned a true story into a fictional drama just to create shock value and make money. By portraying the brothers as cold, aggressive narcissists with no remorse, he completely missed the reality of who they were. It’s clear he was more interested in creating a sensationalized narrative than respecting the actual events.
the way he tried to, not only force a romantic relationship between the two brothers, but also force the idea that erik is gay? baffled me. he has said numerous times he is not gay and it would make me feel terrible for people to be spreading that lie about me. (not bc im homophobic but because it's a lie)
i don’t believe they were sane. abuse occurred. i think that if someone is in a sane state of mind you have the potential to be manipulated (especially by legal authorities) into defending yourself, getting a better deal. they obviously used their lies throughout the entirety of the case. why not blame the other sibling? no one will ever know the truth except them but those two were without a doubt trauma bonded by something…. extremely disturbing and i can’t wrap my head around any of it.
Also, Kitty studied communications in college but ended up teaching for a while until becoming a stay at home mother. I haven't seen any evidence that she worked in the field of journalism. It is documented that she aspired to be an actress.
A man who was a singer and 13 years old came forward after he got older and he made the 13 year old do what they claimed in their testimony, he came forward a year ago. How can he have the same story. RCA is a big record label back then
I will always be disgusted by how this case was handled. Lyle's prosecutor, Pam Bozanich, argued that "men could not be raped, because they lack the necessary equipment to be raped”. Yep, that’s an actual quote this idiot presented to the jury 😒😒😒 Parents are suppose to protect their children at all costs, kitty and Jose just cared about image and didn’t care about their kids at all. The ACTUAL trial depicts an accurate account of the events. Unlike Ryan Murphy’s and Netflix’s shitty attempt at a biopic. It was self defense, and i will ALWAYS stand by that. If they didn’t kill their parents, Jose would have 100 percent had both of them killed and made it look like an accident because that’s just how powerful, rich and narcissistic he was.
100% self defense. I was talking about the case with my brother and we both agreed that we would do the same to protect each other in a situation like theirs. Thank God we have good parents.

The brothers had to PROVE imminent fear of BOTH parents for an imperfect self-defense theory and there is NO evidence or even testimony from the brothers depicting imminent fear of their mother yet plenty of evidence proves the opposite. In terms of the prosecutor’s opinions 40 plus years ago do you expect her to have a magical reader that told her how people think present day. Back then society at large thought the only way for a man to be R was by a group or if he was gay and liked being a bottom because no man would allow another solo man to R him since a man does not have a box ie a man has to use something that is NOT biologically designed for that which would cause tremendous pain and in most cases not be physically possible as the man or boy gets older in age unless his mind was a gay man and liked it or learned to like it. Furthermore, there would be corroboration of third party witnesses attesting to hearing or seeing the R like the live in maids and Erik’s testimony would have been much different about this. Erik said he only said no ONCE. Does that mean all the other times was consensual? How was Erik able to take it Lyle never heard anything and both brothers said their mother likely did not know when her bedroom was across the hall in ALL three houses (NJ, Calabasas, and BH)? That simply is NOT possible. The brothers were telling lies mixed in with some truths and a liar can never win over an entire jury because everyone does NOT let their emotions override irrefutable facts, timelines, lack of corroboration, the defendant’s actions not matching their words, and common sense

These were both brothers with numerous prior felonies of burglary, identity theft, etc. The parents had no criminal history, clean records, and in their OWN home in a CLOSEd door den watching tv. A closed door meant leave them alone. “The way they abused those boys” is a phrase only someone with the ability to victimize grown men as boys would say who purposefully IGNORED what the brothers actually testified in order to conjure a fictitious story and all common sense. They said what they said. They were grown men. If Lyle said his abuse stopped at 11 then that is what he said. If Erik said his abuse was only from Jose as an adult and his mother had not abused him as a teen or as an adult then he said what he said.
Wow, that story about the young boy from Menudo being raped by Jose is news to me. I was glued to the first trial. It was so sensational--I watched it for entertainment. Seeing this series makes me want to delve into the whole thing--like the book that was based on Lyle being recorded--when I saw the actors describing their horrific abuse, I found them to be so believable--EMMYS! I watched the clips of the two from back then and Terry Moran's description--the vein on Erik's head--how believable it was--it makes me think that Jose and Kitty are who the monsters are named for--it's fascinating.

That interview seems a bit weird. They had admitted they did it, and their defence was/is-though contested-that their parents had seriously damaged them (like, seriously)... why then, would she think they would be in so much grief? I mean, they did say they felt bad, but why would you, from a third party perspective, assume they would be grieving for their abusers? If what they allege had happened to them had happened to her, would she feel grief, that they were dead, or relief? I would suggest most people would feel a sense of relief, and probably spend lots of money.
They didn't dispute the word 'grief'. They could have said, "No, Barbara, it wasn't grief." They didn't. Probably because they hadn't discussed beforehand how to respond if she asked an unexpected question that didn't fit their narrative.
the ensemble of outstanding actors portraying the menendez family all deserve trophies, honors, accolades, the works for their riveting perfomances. overall, the 9-part series depicted several varying perspectives: the defense side, state prosecutors and court of public opinion. what shocked me is how a mistrial was declared for first round due to the judge's bias. same judge rejected their child abuse testimonies and none of it was permitted in second trial... and, THAT alone is a shocking travesty of justice! There's a habeas to reconsider life with no parole sentence, plus more new corroborative evidence has surfaced.This cultural phenom of a disturbing case is still not over yet.
4:00 caught them lying here. Even when it was already clear, that they killed their parents, Lyle still tried to play the "first version" of the story, where the shopping spree was some sort of a "grief mechanism". That could be the case if they didn't kill their parents. But they did. They were also not that traumatised until they got caught. All of this "abuse" thing started right after Leslie Abramson, who was famously known for claiming the same story stepped in. Nope, I don't trust them. She trained them well though.
Honestly it was always said in the discussions and promotions of this show that it was going to be an overdramatization of the story. I even saw where they wanted viewers to second guess who the real monsters are. So I was not surprised that they made both the brothers and parents appear as the villians and victims at time during the series. People are mad but there is a TON of dialogue taken directly from the trial, the taped sessions, and Lyle's phone calls. It's tons of videos of the original stuff on YT.
I was in middle school when this happened. No social media but the whole nation heard about it. It was all over the news and on front page of newspapers. Most people didn't believe their story
I have so many questions.. I've watched the new series on Netflix... I feel like jose won't S..assualt both of them.. because he was also se.. assaulted by his mother.. I mean why would he do this to his children. I feel like they were just spoiled brats who were just greedy..jose might be a strict parent which definitely wants perfect children.. which made both of them mad at some point of time .. Talking about mother that's not much of a valid reason to kill her with so much brutality..

The throat injury Erik had that the show showed could’ve happened by a popsicle when older actually happened when he was a child and is the type of injury they now train Drs to look out for as a sign of CSA. Kitty absolutely knew what was going on, she would turn the tv volume all the way up when it was happening & did tell other children not to enter the room when Jose was in there with his son. There’s witnesses (not just family members) to corroborate all of this, it’s just that the 2nd trial judge ruled no claims of SA could be said until the penalty phase, basically after they were found guilty.
This is a nice overview of the Netflix show but your title is misleading. You’re not comparing it to real life, you’re just summarizing what happened on the Netflix show.
I think money was definitely involved, but this was much deeper. To kill your parents with that level of vile! Saying it was because they wanted to make it look like a mafia hit, possible but not likely. There's a million other ways they could have accomplished their goal. This was driven out of anger and hatred that an unthinkable level. You don't do that just for money! However, there's no excuse for what they did!

Sounds legit :D They had plenty of time to think about it and many times to go ahead with it or not... They chose shotguns because that's what they could buy without a problem... They are cold blooded killers and they are lying sociopaths who are exactly where they belong. The only facts are that they are convicted first degree murderers. Erik said many times that they were " the perfect murders". You don't just do perfect murders, you plan them... And given how sloppy they were with it, they are not the brightest of the bunch. They had a good defense that was entirely created at character assassinations of people who were dead by their hands... That would mean that with no proof and just my testimony. I could kill you, claim I was abused by you and my testimony alone with no other proof would be enough to set me free? Nah... They planned, killed and lied about murdering 2 people. Regardless of what they did, that's life without parole...
Funny enough, so many things happened in this show that I constantly found myself questioning what was true and what wasn't. I do remember several news stories over the decades covering this, as well as broadcast television versions of this biography, but this is the first time where I could not trust any characters to give me straight answers. Due to that I wound up really enjoying it
The series is a drama for entertainment, not a documentary. But there is a documentary coming to Netflix very soon featuring the brothers that might be a better insight.
People are so thick, there was 0 evidence of sexual abuse, he was on the phone basically saying he was lying about it, i dont no if its because people fancy them or what but you cant be that stupid.

I agree. that scene in the kitchen was campy and over the top. But as silly as it was on the Netflix show, try to consider this: In real life, the defense actually put this incident in their official timeline of events! That's right, the smoking gun that set off this whole chain reaction leading to double murder began with the mother ripping off Lyle's toupee. That's one of the silliest, most ridiculous and contrived explanations to come up with in a murder trial. That's something you would see on an episode of Melrose Place or in a John Hugh's film. But yeah, they tried to pass this off as official record with a straight face.🤣 Considering that the defendants were putting their victims on trial in the first place, this was quite a new level of audacity.
Part of the problem is the boys could have just left. They were no longer kids. The other problem I think was true back then is when they mentioned in the first trial that boys could not be abused. The juror also said the e men on the jury didn't like their lawyer. She was not timid person. i think it was because of her that they didn't get found guilty the first time. I think she did a good job defending them. The riots in 1992, and OJ I think really did have an effect on the outcome. The DA's office needed a win. Also, the public as they said in the series were over them. It had been some years, and they were old news.

I think this is my favorite Ryan Murphy show. Usually his shows lose its momentum. But this managed, for once, to stay great. Loved Dahmer. But I hope these brothers get out.

This show took me by surprise...the 2 guys playing the brothers were phenomenal no matter what emotion they were portraying and Javier Bardem is an Icon and so scary in this 😅 I kept thinking the one older brother was Sebastian Stan!

I just watched a whole psychologist analyze the testimonies of sexual abuse from both brothers and he concluded that the way they told the stories and carried themselves through it was consistent with people who really were abused and had signs of PTSD. I believe the brothers went crazy with the money because they were trying to forget what they did and cope with the money spending. I believe they truly went through what they said they did, but I do not think how they handled it was oKay. Maybe they do have mental illness but I wouldn’t be surprised due to the trauma they could have been going through during childhood. Trauma stunts growth

Well said. As a childhood sexual abuse survivor myself, I’ve watched their testimonies and it definitely is in the way they carry themselves and recall the events that makes me believe them. Thank you for pointing that out.
I think the show did a good job at showing how everything was transpiring at THAT time… the show seemed split on showing them as victims vs monsters just how back then everyone was split on believing them as victims and monsters.

The abuse is not remotely contested. There are a bunch of family members that saw the abuse as well as boys outside of the family that were also abused by the dad. It is only contested by people who know nothing about the case.

That’s true, however it’s an extremely common thing for victims of same sex child molestation to have conflicted feelings on their orientation. Often times, it almost feels like they were never given the option to choose what they liked, but grew to tolerate it or see it as their preference. It’s an absolute strip of power that affects you mentally and I know from experience.

You can be gay without being sexually assaulted, that doesn’t determine your sexuality. Erik himself pointed out how offensive it is to imply that sexual abuse turns someone gay. He clarified that he himself is not gay, and such assumptions about abuse victims are harmful and misleadingHeres also what the brothers had to say about it: "The prosecutor brought that up because I was sexually molested and he felt in his own thinking that if I was sodomised by my father that I must have enjoyed it and therefore I must be gay.”

But a lot of gay people write and feel connected to me.” Lyle then added: "A problem at the trial was the gender bias, that because they were dealing with males and an incest family ... there was this perception that maybe it was something that he wanted, something that he allowed to happen."
Another said: "I don’t understand how in the show Eric is portrayed as essentially a gay man while in all the interviews with him he clearly states that he’s not. I know the creator Ryan Murphy is gay and maybe he preferred that narrative? But shouldn’t it stay close to reality? Confusing."
As I was watching episode 5 with Erik / Cooper Koch telling his abuse story, I was thinking this guy deserves an Emmy just for this, then at the end as the camera does a closeup on his face as he looks at his lawyer with a look, of wondering if she believes his story. Also, Javier Bardem as Jose their father, I mean I have thought he was phenomenal since seeing him play the Villain in No Country for Old Men. I go back and forth believing their story, then when Lyle is giving his story to over the prison phone, I was thinking she's going to write a book, and this makes him look like a psychopath. Also him asking people to make up a story about his dad assaulting them as well. Great the way they told the story from several POVs, the brothers, the witnesses, the spectators, the parents via family and counseling sessions.

Javier Barden was great with the Cuban accent too. He’s from Spain and his original Spanish accent is pretty thick but he did it great! And his whole acting too of course. He was so scary.

I was confused after watching the series as it seemed to portray that Lyle came up with the idea of the sexual abuse story and got Erik to play along at trial, but if you watch the real trial their testimonies both seem very raw and genuine.

This season was a bit lighter and less eerie, really loved how they portrayed both sides of the kids and parents. It really made me feel conflicted. I feel like they definitely deserved some time in prison but idk if they derserved this long of a sentence.
The show is heavily fictionalized. Some of the events are completely untrue - like the reason why Jill Lansing left the case. She left because she had a young daughter who she was missing out on. She used to bring the daughter to her sessions with Lyle and the little girl adored Lyle. Lyle used to call her "Jilly". She also stayed on for a while long to prepare the new lawyers that were coming in, she didn't just bolt like that.

@@xxwhispersxx2856You are pretending like there was not an almost 4 year GAP between the trials when Jill was free to “spend time with her family” AND pretending like Jill and Leslie were willing to work for free. There was no more money by the second trial. Leslie threatened to quit if the judge did not let her get paid 250k with tax payer dollars and eventually accepted the 150K of tax payer money instead. Jill continued to work and the court dockets reflect she worked other cases during the second trial so that was a lie about her wanting time to spend with her family. Lyle demolished his entire defense with his lying and attempts to get witnesses to lie under oath for him. Juries do not evaluate proven liars well

Had they told the truth the moment the police got there what happen that night things would have been different. They couldn’t do that because the truth was they did what they did for money and to get under Jose strict thumb. However they tried to cover up their crimes by making it look like it was a mifia hit because their dad was powerful man in the music industry. When that didn’t work they went to the abuse excuse.
lol some people here mad because Murphy didn't go for easy answers... They literally portrayed all the awful abuse towards the boys and Kitty. If anything, Murphy showed that Jose was a scary psycho who changed according to circumstances, when the change fit his agenda. He only started to be 'better' when he decided that he had to make it in politics himself, because 'the boys were disappointment' but the 'change' was superficial, exactly as sociopaths act, it's literally in the show. On the other hand, Murphy also asks interesting questions that blind cheerleaders of the brothers don't want to answer, but we need to ask this, as even if your side is sure you are 10000% right, it's not that simple.
The only truth we know for sure in this case is that we really don't know what happened there, inside this house for all these years, yes, there was abuse and control by Jose part, and it is shown brutally on the show, but the fact is, there were also lies and sociopathic behaviors of the boys, and literally other part of their family also said it.
This family is to this day divided between believing them vs not believing them, and THAT'S a FACT. If you wanted Murphy to just brainlessly repeat one side of the story, you actually don't understand what makes great TV, and what actually is close to real life - life is always complex, truth is complex in cases like this, and this is what Murphy portrays brilliantly. He asks questions and doesn't give you easy answers, and for me, that was the most accurate portrayal of this whole awful case.
Also, two things can exist together. They were abused, and Murphy& co literally showed this, but they were also very, very disturbed young men because they were products of their sick and toxic environment, and Murphy also showed this absolutely brilliantly! For me, it is finally balanced, analytic on a deep level, traumatic, and an excellent show about this case! And Javier Bardem as Jose is absolutely terrifying! He is an abusive sadist in this, so idk what are you talking about!

I AGREE 100 percent and that is why the TWO juries at the first trial could not agree to let them off on a manslaughter charge instead of first degree AFTER 16 DAYS of deliberations. Nobody KNOWS what went on in that house besides the people who LIVED there and the FACT is the live in maids testified under oath they never saw or heard any signs of abuse, Lyle testified he never knew about Jose and Erik and vice versa, and both brothers testified the mom likely did not know. It is impossible all that abuse went on and nobody knew anything but it certainly is possible for people to LIE like the brothers who are proven liars that lied and fake cried to police numerous times, family, friends, and news reporters

From what I got out of what he was trying to do was show 3 solid angles that were or might be the most obvious. Because towards the middle, I was a little confused, but then I noticed it was 3 different ways to tell their story, the parents & the public, if that makes sense.

What many people don’t understand is that when children are systematically abused like this, they don’t turn into logical sensible people. So yes, Baba Wawa, you are correct…their behavior was definitely odd and unhealthy. They were messed up people. Of course they were. So many people passing judgement, who have no clue what that kind of abuse does to you.

I did think the series as a whole didn't justify the 9-episode length. That being said, I actually appreciated the series (without any warning) was willing to go back and forth in showing members of the Menendez family as both victims and monsters. To this day, the case is pretty divisive and the show does a good job reflecting that. It's not taking sides.

I cannot believe how so many people write here that Murphy didn't portray the abuse angle enough, and that he showed the parents in a good light. What?! Nonsense! We obviously watched a different show! This show is absolutely brilliant, just as Dahmer's show was, and the portrayal of Jose Menendez is downright terrifying! Javier Bardem is an absolutely amazing actor, that role was brilliantly written and acted!! Jose is portrayed as a terrifying sadist & abuser, and together with Kitty's collaboration, the whole situation in this house is shown to be hell on Earth! So idk what people here watched, and what are they talking about! It was an absolutely brilliant portrayal, complex, and analytic on a deep level, of an awful, toxic family, the breakdown of the marriage, and the complete breakdown of dreams. All the actors were fantastic, but Bardem seriously needs to get a Golden Globe, Emmy & other nominations, he was scary af in this role!

I totally agree and felt exactly the same after watching it... Just WOW!!! 50+ minutes in 1 long take without any camera movement, just focussed on Eric recounting the abuse he suffered... His lawyer is in the scene opposite him, but you only see her back for 50 minutes! And yet it's super intense, impossible to look away... All down to a perfext script and some truly amazing acting by Cooper Koch.... I was blown away by it... Literally saying WOW at least 3 times when the episode was finished...

it was a brilliant show that portrayed complex reality that we will NEVER know for sure, no matter what some childish, blind Menendez cheerleaders say! It painted all the perspectives possible - the public perception at first at the beginning of the show which was a brilliant choice, the boys' perspective, the lawyers' experiences, etc. And it absolutely showed brutal abuse in that house. I mean Javier Bardem in this role terrified me more than in the role of Anton Chigurh in No Country for the Old Man! He deserves all the awards for this role, he was just a pure, scary, unpredictable psychopath in this!! All the people who have doubts - I recommend you watch it for Bardem's acting alone, although it has many brutal, disturbing scenes!

Gotta hand it to Ryan Murphy, he did an excellent job with this and so did the two actors playing Lyle and Erik- I mean they were incredible.
But boy was this an emotional ride. I come from the camp of fully believing the boys did it. I wasn’t alive during the first trial. And so it wasn’t until I did my research and the “confession” from the former menudo singer, that I started to think maybe they were really victims of something horrible in that house. But then learning there is a tape with Lyle admitting to making it all up, for me, sadly that’s what you can’t come back from. The only thing that gives me a pause is the menudo confession, but it’s hard when you also know Lyle confessed to making it up, bragged about fooling the jury, and Erik writing a screenplay about killing his parents for money. I know a lot of people want to believe they were abused, but evil people CAN and DO lie about things we’d think just cross the line all the time…especially if their back is against the wall.

The show gave different perspectives. Many things can be true at once, 1. The abuse, 2. The murder was premeditated and driven by money. Erik seemed to be fantasising about killing his parents for a while, him writing a screenplay, they probably wanted to get away from their controlling father but were so used to the lifestyle that they figured the only way to keep the lifestyle and get away from their father was to kill both their parents.

I think the show left me conflicted because it didn't take a stance, which was intentional, leaving viewers polarised just like the case does to this day. To say the boys side was never shown is a bit of a stretch since episode 5 was an intimate episode where Erik without interruption (cutting to other scenes) got to tell in detail what happened to him. We are also shown the Princeton expulsion from two POV's leaving it up to the viewer to decide for themselves. It is not the job of the show to choose a side, because it seems there is no clear "this is what happened".

i don’t believe they were sane. abuse occurred. i think that if someone is in a sane state of mind you have the potential to be manipulated (especially by legal authorities) into defending yourself, getting a better deal. they obviously used their lies throughout the entirety of the case. why not blame the other sibling? no one will ever know the truth except them but those two were without a doubt trauma bonded by something…. extremely disturbing and i can’t wrap my head around any of it.

Back then society at large thought the only way for a man to be R was by a group or if he was gay and liked being a bottom because no man would allow another solo man to R him since a man does not have a box ie a man has to use something that is NOT biologically designed for that which would cause tremendous pain and in most cases not be physically possible as the man or boy gets older in age unless his mind was a gay man and liked it or learned to like it. Furthermore, there would be corroboration of third party witnesses attesting to hearing or seeing the R like the live in maids and Erik’s testimony would have been much different about this. Erik said he only said no ONCE. Does that mean all the other times was consensual? How was Erik able to take it Lyle never heard anything and both brothers said their mother likely did not know when her bedroom was across the hall in ALL three houses (NJ, Calabasas, and BH)? That simply is NOT possible. The brothers were telling lies mixed in with some truths and a liar can never win over an entire jury because everyone does NOT let their emotions override irrefutable facts, timelines, lack of corroboration, the defendant’s actions not matching their words, and common sense

Wow, that story about the young boy from Menudo being raped by Jose is news to me. I was glued to the first trial. It was so sensational--I watched it for entertainment. Seeing this series makes me want to delve into the whole thing--like the book that was based on Lyle being recorded--when I saw the actors describing their horrific abuse, I found them to be so believable--EMMYS! I watched the clips of the two from back then and Terry Moran's description--the vein on Erik's head--how believable it was--it makes me think that Jose and Kitty are who the monsters are named for--it's fascinating.

That interview seems a bit weird. They had admitted they did it, and their defence was/is-though contested-that their parents had seriously damaged them (like, seriously)... why then, would she think they would be in so much grief? I mean, they did say they felt bad, but why would you, from a third party perspective, assume they would be grieving for their abusers? If what they allege had happened to them had happened to her, would she feel grief, that they were dead, or relief? I would suggest most people would feel a sense of relief, and probably spend lots of money.

the ensemble of outstanding actors portraying the menendez family all deserve trophies, honors, accolades, the works for their riveting perfomances.
overall, the 9-part series depicted several varying perspectives: the defense side, state prosecutors and court of public opinion. what shocked me is how a mistrial was declared for first round due to the judge's bias. same judge rejected their child abuse testimonies and none of it was permitted in second trial... and, THAT alone is a shocking travesty of justice! There's a habeas to reconsider life with no parole sentence, plus more new corroborative evidence has surfaced.This cultural phenom of a disturbing case is still not over yet.

Even when it was already clear, that they killed their parents, Lyle still tried to play the "first version" of the story, where the shopping spree was some sort of a "grief mechanism". That could be the case if they didn't kill their parents. But they did. They were also not that traumatised until they got caught. All of this "abuse" thing started right after Leslie Abramson, who was famously known for claiming the same story stepped in. Nope, I don't trust them. She trained them well though.

Honestly it was always said in the discussions and promotions of this show that it was going to be an overdramatization of the story. I even saw where they wanted viewers to second guess who the real monsters are. So I was not surprised that they made both the brothers and parents appear as the villians and victims at time during the series. People are mad but there is a TON of dialogue taken directly from the trial, the taped sessions, and Lyle's phone calls. It's tons of videos of the original stuff on YT.

The throat injury Erik had that the show showed could’ve happened by a popsicle when older actually happened when he was a child and is the type of injury they now train Drs to look out for as a sign of CSA. Kitty absolutely knew what was going on, she would turn the tv volume all the way up when it was happening & did tell other children not to enter the room when Jose was in there with his son. There’s witnesses (not just family members) to corroborate all of this, it’s just that the 2nd trial judge ruled no claims of SA could be said until the penalty phase, basically after they were found guilty.
This is a nice overview of the Netflix show but your title is misleading. You’re not comparing it to real life, you’re just summarizing what happened on the Netflix show.
I think money was definitely involved, but this was much deeper. To kill your parents with that level of vile! Saying it was because they wanted to make it look like a mafia hit, possible but not likely. There's a million other ways they could have accomplished their goal. This was driven out of anger and hatred that an unthinkable level. You don't do that just for money! However, there's no excuse for what they did!

Funny enough, so many things happened in this show that I constantly found myself questioning what was true and what wasn't. I do remember several news stories over the decades covering this, as well as broadcast television versions of this biography, but this is the first time where I could not trust any characters to give me straight answers. Due to that I wound up really enjoying it
The series is a drama for entertainment, not a documentary. But there is a documentary coming to Netflix very soon featuring the brothers that might be a better insight.

I agree. that scene in the kitchen was campy and over the top. But as silly as it was on the Netflix show, try to consider this: In real life, the defense actually put this incident in their official timeline of events! That's right, the smoking gun that set off this whole chain reaction leading to double murder began with the mother ripping off Lyle's toupee. That's one of the silliest, most ridiculous and contrived explanations to come up with in a murder trial. That's something you would see on an episode of Melrose Place or in a John Hugh's film. But yeah, they tried to pass this off as official record with a straight face.🤣 Considering that the defendants were putting their victims on trial in the first place, this was quite a new level of audacity.
Part of the problem is the boys could have just left. They were no longer kids. The other problem I think was true back then is when they mentioned in the first trial that boys could not be abused. The juror also said the e men on the jury didn't like their lawyer. She was not timid person. i think it was because of her that they didn't get found guilty the first time. I think she did a good job defending them. The riots in 1992, and OJ I think really did have an effect on the outcome. The DA's office needed a win. Also, the public as they said in the series were over them. It had been some years, and they were old news.

I think this is my favorite Ryan Murphy show. Usually his shows lose its momentum. But this managed, for once, to stay great. Loved Dahmer. But I hope these brothers get out.
