Back then in the 60-90 abused victims especially men stayed quiet, fear of being not belived judged, now we know so many family members even fathers have committed such nasty things towards they own children. It was Taboo something not spoken about.
Just how many women normalized staying in an abusive marriage because that’s what her own mother did and they normalized it , didn’t report stay quiet that behavior passes on to the next generations

To be honest they took too many liberties with this interpretations. Coming from such a high S1 with Dahmer, this season was a bit of a letdown. A nice ride but nothing outstanding to be honest. The love happenings in the shower was weird to include it even though there is no confirm facts of that happening. I wish they hadn't strayed.

It is important to approach this case/story with sympathy for Erik and Lyle. They're not sociopaths or psychopaths, their behavior is a reflection of the abusive environment they were raised in. Of course, murder is never the answer, and at the same time, there is so much abuse someone can endure before something happens. I would also suggest reading Erik's statement on the show.

The brothers are innocent, all they wanted was love from the parents. They both told they mom when they were little what was happening as well as family members who also told the mom and she denied. Imagine Erik horror when he realized she knew all along and allowed it to happened. Up to the week they got murdered, Erik was still getting raped and abused daily as a form of punishment:
    Bad grades get raped
    Speak back get raped
Don’t do good in tennis get raped etc.
He manipulated both brothers in keeping it from one another. Erik being the most sensible and sensitive, got it worse and he stayed quiet and didn’t tell lyle because he knew his temper , it wasn’t until that night where they rip Lyle wig off that he confessed to his brother him getting abused since 6. Lyle had no idea and had thought it stopped.
Remember abused is taught no one wakes up after 30 years and decides to start hitting raping molesting out of no where. Jose went through it as a kid and normalized it , his way of gettting some of his childhood back or voice he lost was to inflict that same behavior to his child. The brothers grew up and realized it was wrong and decided to end that cycle: it would had continued if they had stayed alive. Imagine if Erik and Lyle would had gotten married or had kids with those grandparents around.

    ***** SPOILER *****
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
I am probably one of the few people who thinks this series was successful in portraying the agony, the pain and the hell the brothers went through. I didn't know anything about the Menendez brothers and though I have to say the first episode was quite creepy, after finishing the series, I absolutely believe that the brothers went through hell with their parents and that there was no other way for them to set them free, at least I am convinced that was what they truly felt when commiting the murders. I think the way it depicts their feelings, the hesitation to talk about the abuse, the feelings they shared, are very believable and relatable, especially if you have been a victim of abuse yourself.
After finishing the series I started to dig down the rabbit hole and watched the trial, theories .. well, a lot of information. And for me, again - after finishing the series - I felt that the series portrayed perfectly the way the public perceived these two men during the 90s, but always made clear that the abuse took place and that the creator believes the brothers. It was a risky move to portray it that way, absolutely, but it kept me thinking about it.
For me it clearly showed the facade the parents put up for the public to see and at the same time the reality, the horrors that happened behind closed doors. When Eric and Lyle talk about the abuse, in the series as well as during the trial, it hits deep. You can just feel and hear - by the way they are talking about it - that it is true. Abuse isn't black and white, it's not easy, it is painful, hurtful, destroying and confusing as hell. Your brain can't make sense that the person who should protect you and who you love with all your heart does this to you. Especially when you experience it since your childhood and by one or both parents. The feelings they shared might not make sense to someone who hasn't have to gone through it, but for a victim it actually does make sense. And as strange as it sounds, the alleged contradictions that people without abuse experience see in the brothers' statements and interpret them as evidence of guilt, exactly these statements prove, on the contrary, the truth of what was said. Someone who hasn't experienced abuse would never make such statements because they don't sound logical. However, a victim of abuse will recognize these feelings, especially if the abuse came from one or both parents. You can't play something like that if you don't have experienced it.
Despite the sometimes awkward depiction of the brothers (that were filmed on purpose - in my opinion - to show the public's opinion and the extreme difference between the public's impression and the dark, horrible reality) the show emphasized more and more on the manipulating nature of the father and what reality the brothers really had to live in. One moment stayed with me especially. In episode 6 or 7 right before they shot the family picture it is shown that José allegedly tried to be a "better" husband and father. That's the surface. Then there is the scene between him and Eric behind the door, his sexual encounter with the young men, and most shockingly during the photo session you can see Eric moving very uncomfortably behind José because his bottom hurt from the abuse that happened not long before that. On the surface this episode seems as if the parents were trying hard to be good, but everything else showed how badly they were failing and how abusive they've been. Not only sexual abuse, but also emotional and physical. The last scene in this episode, with the parents sitting on the couch eating ice cream, it felt intentionally superficial for me and the version of the public that didn't and don't bother to look closer behind the scenes.
So - I thought it was quite successful in showing the brothers' trauma and made me feel extremely sorry and angry for them. And after digging down the whole I feel even stronger about it. But the series was the door to it, and for me it made me want to know more.
Btw, Javier Bardem scared the hell out of me, his depiction of the abusive, manipulative, unhinged and deeply troubled father was outstanding.
I'm not sure if I can get my point across correctly. Unfortunately, English is not my native language. Ultimately, of course, it's just my opinion anyway, nothing more.

Be careful !!!! The problem of the show is that in the show the point of view of the family members that supports the brothers and the new evidences found about their father's abuses are completely ignored. So in the show we have the brother's point of view and the one of those who don't believe them. But the family members who witnessed the abuse and knew about it, such as the sister of Kitty menendez, or the cousins of the brothers or their uncle, (all of them have spoken on tv about it many times) are nowhere to be found in the show. And the approach of "make tour own oppinion" could be true 20-10 years ago but nowadays with all the proof the police have found and gathered, it seems at 90% that the brothers were not lying about their father ! The problem is that the showrunner purposely ignored all these elements that are proving the brothers declaration. Of course they are not innocents ! They killed their parents but the reasons behind it are being diminished by those showrunner's action.

People who watch this series (not y'all but the audience in general) about the Menendez brothers need to make sure they look deeply into the case before developing a full opinion on the brothers guilt or to what degree they are guilty. There is a TON of info, documentaries (there is another coming out on the 7th), you can watch the brothers actual testimonies, see doctors information from their childhood etc. Monsters WAS a good watch but it also appears to have done a disservice to the brothers. The show has been criticized for their portrayal of Lyle in particular (he was not known by anyone for being so aggressive though Erik always appeared to be the more emotional of the brothers) The insinuation on the brothers relationship with each other was absurd and had no place in the show. In their 1st trials they had countless people back their abuse claims; aunts, uncle, cousins, coaches, teachers etc.
Erik has learning disabilities that were ignored by his parents - which is why at times in the show and in his actual trial etc. Erik struggled at times with processing how to respond to things. Both boys had questionable history with their medical issues as children such as a 7 yr old Erik having injuries within his throat that doctors say is consistent with the SA claims. Erik also suffered the SA abuse for many more years than Lyle though both make claims of abuse on all levels (note; they are not the only males who accused their father of SA as minors.) The degree of abuse at all ages and levels would have altered Eriks development truthfully.
The spending they did after the crime was committed fell in line with their normal spending. It was normal of their life style.
They were also young. Erik was only 18 and Lyle 3 years older so in a lot of ways, Eriks mind WAS still very young and he was a kid. Sure, 18 is a legal adult but we also know..18 is a kid in many ways.
Lyle has always said he gave the final k*ll shots. He said it was all to protect his brother and they had threatened to tell on their father and they were fearful of him.
Their scattered behavior and poor "planning" after the crime is actually consistent with NOT having premeditation but the boys basically having snapped.
This is been one of my favourite (for lack of better phrasing) cases over the years to study (I swear, I am not strange, I studied education, special education, and psychology as majors in college as well took criminal law classes for fun and leaned heavily into my love of psychology which is why I love studying crime!) Back when all of this happened, what happened behind closed doors tended to be left behind closed doors and the brothers fears came true when they were forced to talk about their abuse and SA. They were not believed. They were shamed and embarrassed. Make note the SA abuse was NOT going to be part of their defense but it came to be after a therapist spent 50 hours with Erik and learned what she learned. In the 1st trial for both they had mistrials and the not shocking thing is that the women leaned heavily toward manslaughter but the males leaned toward murder. Eriks jury was 6 men and 6 women. All of the women believed Erik.
Dr Oziel was a criminal in his own right with how he interacted with patients - like an affair with a patient - and secretly recorded the brothers.
The boys mother had addiction issues and a panic disorder and I believe also a personality disorder (Jose also had an 8 yr affair on her). So yeah, a deep dive will give people a better understanding of the life the boys lived and what is believed - I always believed the brothers and believe they should have been found guilty of a voluntary manslaughter charge. If they were believed and found guilty on the manslaughter charges they'd be free now.
The brothers were separated for 22 years but are not again together in the same prison where they are spearheading some things to help prisoners- like painting the prison yard walls to add positivity.
I will be quiet now. Lol But again, my favourite case I have looked into for years and I believe the brothers.

Maybe something has been uncovered about it since then but I don’t know. Back then it was black and white. They murdered their parents and then came up with an outlandish defense of all different kinds of abuse. These boys are the monsters. They are guilty and are in prison for a reason. Just recently the zoomers and gen y/mil kids are thinking they are innocent because mom and dad hurt their feelings and they had no choice but to kill them to stop the mental abuse.
