Project Wrong Way 14 - Butt Stuff, Wire Wheel, Rust-Mort - FJ-40 frame prep.

- The butt stuff is a t-shirt, get your mind out of the gutter. Did more work on the frame today. Used a die grinder, man did that thing destroy wire wheels. Also used a needle gun, pretty sweet device for sure. Only applied a small amount of Rust-Mort, but will do a deeper coat when the frame prep is complete. Did some GoPro shooting, will have to incorporate more.

This show is an attempt at humor. Im not a professional, and it should be clear within the first few minutes of every episode. I’m trying to give it “the old college try”. Learn with me, most importantly, learn what not to do. Im building the Landcruiser to be my driver, and overlander. I have a 2012 Honda Accord I drive every day, and its a soulless journey each time.

So I have just binge watched all the episodes up to this one. Classic stuff mate. I grew up in my dads workshop so this brings back a lot of memories of us working on his FJ40. Looking forward to binge watching the rest of your episodes.......youre a funny guy man.

@@projectwrongway9127 I am up in North Queensland so the fires are a long way from me, but my heart goes out to everyone affected by them. Pretty rough sites down there. 01DaveA ever been to Cairns? When I was younger, 17. I sold my FJ55 and bought a plane ticket with two friends to Aus. Landed in Melbourne, bought a beater Holden Jackaroo and drove up the east coast. Some great adventures. My pals left after two weeks, and I stayed for another two. Drove solo from Brisbane on my 18th birthday and ended up in Cairns. I’m a big fan of your country, if you haven’t noticed, and love the people down there. It was the rainy season too, rained like a bastard half the time. Made for a great adventure. Even stopped at the Australia Zoo, when Irwin was still around. Loved that guy too. Anyway, take it easy down there, and thanks again for watching man.
@@projectwrongway9127 Cairns is only a few hours north of my location. I have family there so know it well. The wet season is pretty nuts here.....rains plenty. I have noticed that you love Australia :)

I am part of that 1% of women who do not happen to be related to your family or in your church group and I think being your authentic selves is pretty damn great! Plus all your hilarious jokes come in response to whatever your wife says (Who wants to watch Tom without Jerry?). FYI, its not just oId married men watching cool cruiser restoration vids; I happen to be a girl who loves FJs and literally just turned 21 yesterday and I'm sure I'm not the only one! Don't question yourself. It is ALWAYS correct to do a lift and oversize tires before any necessary work is done. Especially to ward off the death grip of a grey Honda ripping at your soul. Good day, Mate!

This is a frame off resto where the frame doesn't actually come off.
“Wrong Way” to the fullest.
You’re supposed to leave it wet on the substrate for at least 45 minutes, you can’t just put it on and let it dry. You gotta keep it wet for 45 mins (not with your tiny jackhammer) and then rinse it off with distilled water to neutralize the acid. Didn’t you read the technical information on the sem website
The results were better than I expected, after hearing what I should’ve done I’m guessing they would have been even better. I read a little late in the game the proper method, but for anyone going this route I’m thinking your feedback here will be a help to them.
There were just way to many comedic gems to comment on. Maybe Harbor Freight has a sand blaster you could get.

Hey Ben, Have you heard of POR-15? You can apply it directly to the frame and it will inhibit any rust. I'd recommend cleaning just like you are and POR-15'ing after that. The good thing is you don't have to apply primer. It's really durable too. Only downside is it is pricey and will be difficult to remove if you decide to do a full frame off later on. Comes in brush on or spray cans.

For just wire-wheeling the frame as it sits for clean up, looks like you’re actually doing a good job, it’s just time consuming. Interested in seeing how the SEM Rust Mort works.

Oh cool, POR 15 is good stuff! Used it on some bump-side parts I refinished over 10 years ago, still look pretty much exactly the same as they did the day I installed them.
Plan on using on my FJ55 frame here pretty soon. Currently a tad deeper into mine than you are into yours 😄

just wondering seeing as you have the engine out why not take the body off and do a full frame off restoration? when you consider these trucks don't need a real top, their wiring isn't crazy, their interiors are spartan, they don't need carpeting they are way easier than a 60's car to do a full body off. plus it would give you at least 5 years of video material.

@@bryandahlberg1956 Im scared. If the body comes off, it's a rabbit hole man. I never wanted this thing to be amazing looking. Just wanted to drive it, and fix it when it breaks. I was trying not to get caught up in the restoration side of things. Im starting to think I'll have too anyway.
