Selena had one of the best voices ever. Her death saddened people throughout the word. "Dreaming Of You", Como La Flor", are some of her biggest hits when she crossed over into English and the US. I just watched her movie again on TV this past weekend for about the 50th time. She was definitely an icon gone way too soon!!

It really got to me knowing that it was her last concert singing “I will survive”. Her tragic ending is hard to comprehend all these years later.
I grew up with her music. She was so kind and talented. The outfit she wore in this video was her design. She was just transitioning to the English audience when she was tragically taken from us. Songs like "No Me Queda Mas" spoke of her Latin roots. "I Could Fall In Love" and "Missing My Baby" are also songs I highly recommend.

The her 9 consecutive top 5 singles, when she became the first female artist to dominate the Billboard Charts - Last Dance, Mac Arthur Park, Heaven Knows, Hot Stuff, Bad Girls, Dim All The Lights, No More Tears (Enough is Enough), On The Radio, The Wanderer. She was the first female and the first black artist to take 3 albums to the top of the charts back to back, the just happened to be 3 Double albums.

This concert was held at the Houston Astrodome, where the Houston Astros use to play. This concert was held in early 1995, 61,000 in attendance I believe this was her last concert before her untimely death. What an amazing talent gone to soon. Rip

Every time I hear Selena, as a Puerto Rican/Dominican descendant, I always remember how all of Latin America loved her and how humble Selena was. She sang with the Barrio Boyz and reached out to the Puerto Rican community in the early 1990s.

Her dancing is the Cumbia. It is originally from Africa and brought to the country of Colombia, and adopted by the Native people
of Colombia. It is a popular dance to this day in Colombia and Mexico.

"The Hustle" brings me back to high school in the mid-70's and fund raising dance marathons. Hundreds of kids dancing for an entire weekend with few breaks. I won't last ten minutes dancing like that now!

I was living in Corpus Christi when she was killed. I had just discovered her music after a year of living there.
I love her so dearly. You could see this great spirit and joy emanating from her. As a young, biracial girl, she was crucial in me seeing someone who looked like me. My favorite of her songs that are in Spanish are Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, No Me Queda Mas, and Como La Flor.
Selena LOVED disco music, so it was great that she got to eventually showcase it. Como La Flor, and Bidi Bidi Bom Bom are huge songs for her, as well as Techno Cumbia. Those three showcase her talent and dancing.
As far as the Disco, the two you didn’t really know (Last Dance and on the Radio) are by the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer. Definitely listen to on the radio, but another powerful song is McArthur Park. And finally yes you need to listen to I will survive, by Gloria Gaynor!

Tragically she was working on her first cross-over album when she was killed. 😢 😢 😢. Thank you for honoring her memory. This is Gloria Gaynor “I will survive”. That is the original of the first song. From the disco era. Second song is by Lipps Inc. song is called “Funkytown”. Also from disco era. Third song is by Donna Summer, song is “Last Dance”. Fourth song is “the hustle”. Fifth song is also Donna Summer “On the Radio”.
Stars who die young are "special" in our culture because they never grow old, so we always remember them in their prime. Marilyn Monroe, Princess Diana, etc. As for Selena, she unquestionably has a solid voice, albeit arguably not as good as any of those originals in the Medley. Selena crossed English/Spanish boundaries and deserves credit for that. And she has a few really good songs such as "Dreaming of You" and "I Could Fall in Love" which would be great for the channel.

If you want an amazing Latin artist - you must listen to Ricky Martin. His Spanglish version of the World Cup anthem - the Cup of Life is incredible. Maria, Livin La Vida Loca, are both awesome as well. Turn the Beat around by Gloria Estefan will have you dancing out of your chair. Hips Don't Lie by Shakira is a hot one.

Selena was on the cusp of superstardom when her life at 23 was taken by a maniac. She was transitioning from Spanish to English in her signing. She had such a beautiful voice and did such a wonderful job with the Disco Medley in the video. A young Jennifer Lopez did a great job in the movie "Selena". Check out the ladies in her medley, Gloria Gaynor (I will survive) and Donna Summer (Last Dance & On the Radio). I agree, Donna Summer is a great pick for Female Friday, all of her songs were great. "I Feel Love" is very sensual even today and very futuristic even though it came out in 1977! J and A keep up the great reactions! Also, love your family channel, the children are precious!!

Gloria Gaynor had a huge disco hit with "I Will Survive" which is the first song Selena performs in this show from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 1995. "Funkytown" from Lipps Inc is the 2nd song, "Last Dance" from Donna Summer and "The Hustle" from Van McCoy, and back to Donna Summer with "On the Radio." RIP to the "Queen of Tejano" music. In our hearts always! My favorite Selena song is "La Carcacha."

Keep in mind that this concert happened about 4 weeks BEFORE she was murdered at the young age of 23. No one in their wildest dreams would’ve ever thought this would be her last performance at the Houston Rodeo live stock show! :(

Guys, I was so surprised and shocked and I wondered too (On The Radio-Donna Summer) I just recently suggested you guys react to this and here I find you had already done it a year ago...Wasn't Selena just the bomb...OMG!! You guys ought to react to her life story on movie night, ( JLO plays her ) and JLO did it soo well that it catapulted her own carreer and put her on the map and as we like to say, the rest is history. Also the original interpreter of I Will Survive is Ms. Gloria Gaynor, you need to react to her version, fire!
I could be mistaken but I believe Selena was a big fan of 70s disco. Love her medley. You’ll have to check out her other performances from the Houston Rodeo concert.
