i always found the shot of them running with great fox flying behind them funny. Like someone just stole the ship and they are chasing after it on foot in desperation,
So many childhood memories from this game. I remember being a kid and for months not knowing how to get to Sector Y until my friend came over to show me a "secret passage" he heard from another kid on the playground. Then together we all watched Andross disintegrate not into a robot but into his brain form. That was such a wow moment from an incredible game.
It is funny what you said about the waterfall being the secret ending because it was the normal ending to me as a kid. I used to feel so bad when Falco died that I would reset the Nintendo 64, and since I was kinda bad at the game, I used to reset a lot until I was able to save him lol. I dont know what happened, but one day I must have skiped one of those arches you have to fly through, so the game took me to the easy path, even though Falco was alive. I was schocked to see there was another boss on the level
For me as a 10 year old, it was the opening scene. The music on the first stage, the voice acting and the end line from the first boss. "who are you guys?" "Where star fox!" "Noooooo" and the biggest polygon explosion Ihad ever scene at that point. My Xmas that year for me and my brother was an N64, 2 controllers, lylat wars and golden eye. The folks hit it out of the park. It was the first Xmas we had where they managed to recover financially after a few years of hardship due to business failure. They spoilt us at the time and we didn't even know it. It's nice to look back at that time with very fond memories 💖
At the end of the game when the screen turned white unexpectedly, as a kid it felt so long i thought the console froze up.... Till the dialog came thru. .... Seeing it again now, the white shows up what feels like a quick moment in comparison. ... Game is a 10/10! Excellent replay value and super fun.
One thing I love about the original Star Fox 64 is that the boys at Nintendo actually left it deliberately vague whether or not Fox hallucinated/saw a vision of his father in his Arwing, because a tiny little speck of moving light is visible during the ending cutscene of the mission, flying at a distance and disappearing behind Great Fox, with the same color as the engine exhaust of the Arwings. A great little "It was a fantasy...or was it?" piece of mystery to close out the game on.
@@BMW-sd6nn Ahhh yeah, hitting all the switches on Macbeth is tricky. My strategy for Aquas is just to spam torpedoes at everything and that's never failed me thus far haha!
Another very clever thing about the alternate boss in the first level is that earlier on during the section in the city, the game sets up that flying through things like arches will reward you. Flying through the arched buildings and spaces in the elevated road supports will all reward the player with rings, bombs, or extra enemies to shoot. So it won’t take many playthroughs for a player to instinctively try to fly through the rock arches that trigger the alternate boss. No need for handholding or for the player to buy the strategy guide. StarFox 64 really is a masterclass in game design.
I have something funny to tell about this game. When I was a kid, I knew about the waterfall secret passage in the first level for a long time. And I also knew about having to save Falco. What I DIDN’T know was having to fly under the arches. Because a friend of mine that told me about the waterfall, he never told me about the arches. He probably did that by accident & didn’t know that was one of the requirements to reach the secret route. So for years, I tried to save Falco, but never tried going under the arches because nobody tells you to do so, and i couldn’t understand why I couldn’t get inside the waterfall. Years later I found out about the arches and I said “no way. THAT was the reason??” For the first time ever I was able to reach Aquas, the underwater level. And my mind was blown. The atmosphere was so good, the level was so unsettling due to it being almost completely in the dark, and the boss fight, oh boy. If I had to fight that giant clamshell monster completely in the dark as a kid, I would have shit my pants off. Awesome.
Dude I have almost the exact same story! I accidentally triggered it one time and had no idea how it happened - I knew it had something to do with saving Falco, but I didn't realise until months later that you had to fly under the archways. I thought it was something to do with the amount of health Falco had left when you saved him, and kept trying to get his health down to the exact level as when I triggered it for the first time 😂
I’ve felt so validated to hear as an adult that so many people were also impacted by this game’s end credits, especially at _that_ swell / climax in the music that you referred to. That specific moment dominated middle school me’s imagination for literal years.
My most meme'd and repeated line was from the train boss: "Come a little closer!" My brother and I repeated that one the most. I spent an entire summer as a kid just MASTERING this game. Getting every medal. Every high score. I had every element of the game memorized. I knew all the paths and tricks.
So back in '97 i wanted an N64, and i had to save up enough money to get one. I went to Toys R Us to get one once i finally did, but i only had enough to get the console. A few months later, i had saved up enough to get my first game, and Star Fox 64 had just come out not long prior. It's like it was meant to be. I already loved the original Star Fox and that boxart just spoke to me. Instantly fell in love with this game. Easily one of my favorite games of all time. Massively replayable and ridiculously quotable, gotta love it.
ok,story time. i had this game..we lived in Germany during my childhood. during the balkan wars. in 98 we returned to a post war Bosnia (imagine fallout 4 just without gouls, supermutants and radiation..) one of my uncles loved to play star fox. to me it was always fascinating when adults play video games.. and my uncle was good at the game.like really good..also mario kart..that was a hit in my family..lots of good memories and family bonding...that uncle..offed himself few months ago... i love this game
Shit, that's heavy, sorry for your loss and everything you had to put through. It's reconforting to know we still have the capacity to create fond memories after all the grief we endure c:
One of the best examples of great game design. "COCKY LITTLE FREAKS!" I quoted this line in gym class in elementary school and the teacher didn't like that at all.
Me and my friend's have been reciting lines from this game for almost 30 years! I got an N64 and this game for Christmas in 97 and stood up playing through the entire first play through because I was so drawn in. When the Macbeth explosion happened I guess the rumble pak wasn't secured fully or something because it shook so hard it dropped out of the controller onto my foot and I though it was the coolest thing ever! Also to speak to the replayability, those medals unlocked the landmaster and being able to run around on foot in the battle mode. I could never get the high score on the other side of Venom to unlock the on foot, but I got a medal on every other level!
Man, this is such a quotable game, so many iconic lines! I still find myself saying some of them too! True, I never unlocked the ability to play on-foot in the multiplayer but that was a very cool addition!
I can’t believe I’ve found a great video on one of my favourite games narrated by a guy that sounds exactly like my favourite IT Crowd character. SUBBED!
honesty star fox 643D is I think the best version in the series as in it does have better looking graphics and some extra tweaks but it's essentially the 64 game looking better
The 3DS version was a great modernisation of the original! It's probably the best way to play the game today, although I think I'll always be slightly partial to the original - the fact that you have to play through the whole thing in one sitting, while impractical nowadays, means that you can't help but become fully engaged in the story every time.
@@Fobb the unfortunate thing about the 3ds version is that the game itself is the definitive way to play it, but it is locked to the 3ds to this day which isn't exactly the greatest thing to play something like this game on. I really hope emulators are able to play it one day.
The small details are what make starfox great for me. For example when the arwing is in atmosphere the glow of the engine is red but in the vacuum of space its blue. When your wings are blown off you constantly loose altitude in atmosphere because of loss of lift (happens in space too but ay cant be perfect lol) The voice lines are perfectly timed and programmed and the voice actors did an awesome job. So many memories with this game
If you want the medal for Corneria you have to fly between the two double tower buildings that look slightly damaged and under bridge supports. It will spawn extra enemies that are easy to take down with one charged shot
I remember as a kid, me and my sisters got the N64 for Christmas, I can't remember what games we got with it, but we had Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, Lylat Wars, Ocarina of Time, all around that same time. I remember we used to even rent controllers from Xtravision (Irish equivalent of Blockbusters), so that we could play 4 player. I was only around 7 years old, and my sisters were older, so I sucked at all the games! We used to play them so much. Really was such a simple time in life. The N64 is my favourite console ever, not just because of the absolutely amazing games, but the memories too. Anyway, I remember when we would be playing Lylat Wars, we could never access the Red Path, so we genuinely just assumed that the levels on that part were just inaccessible and just there for show in the Lylat System. Then, one day, I came home from school, and my sister closest to me in age greeted me excitedly "We found a secret ending on Corneria through the waterfall!" Unfortunately they couldn't get the medal required to access Aquas, so went back to Katina, but now we knew the other levels were playable. We were so excited. However, they couldn't remember how they found the secret ending! It was totally by accident. Then after a few more tries I said "try fly through all the arches". So, we did, and it happened. We celebrated like crazy! Good times!
Man, those things were so fun to figure out back in the day! For the longest time I was stuck on the Blue Path until it finally occured to me how to get the waterfall scene to trigger!
This game is awesome: Fastpaced with a lot of action; Several levels designs (Surfaces battles, landmaster, aquatic, space); Landmaster and all range mode adds extra layer of experience. Almost feels like a new game; Several routes with secrets and conditions to complete; Amazing VA Charming characters, even bosses with little screen time have a good development
Sound design, is some of what truely makes this game unforgettable. From the boss explosions, to the quirky dialog, the transmission pop in sound. Its all iconic. Also coming back to starfox after a more then a decade. I forgot just how iconic the lowest tier path is…. The robot of Sector X, and its arms flying though sections of the level, to the rediculously creative Train fight, were the boss is a train with a kite, al ending with one hell of a finnaly, low end venoms trenchrun into a gorilla temple is awesome!
The music added with the characters chiming in. It makes it chaotic but in a good way. It's not over chaotic where it it's just like shut up lol. Like the last line of defense. Or those dam missiles. Gives you a sense of urgency and danger. Very hard to recreate in modern games.
Those uncompressed voices are so clean man. I don't know why Nintendo and Q Games re-recorded everything for 64 3D when they could have just used the archived source recordings. They'd need to re-record lines referencing Fichina [since it was localized in 64 as Fortuna] but otherwise they could have done it
Hearing those lines in all of their glory for the first time after only hearing the compressed versions gave me some real whiplash, but man - they are heaven to my ears!
I just remember the feeling of accomplishment getting all the medals on normal difficulty. And then realizing you could do it all again on 'expert' mode and that there was actually a prize for doing so. Damn I hated losing my wing(s) in one hit in expert mode, though😅
Bears mentioning that getting medals on every level unlocks extra stuff for the multiplayer. The explosions during the Machbeth cutscene made your rumble pak go absolutely ape shit too.
Oh man, I never actually played that route of the game with a Rumble Pak in, will have to try that at some point because I can imagine it'd be insane with all of those explosions!
I emulated this game when the last time I played it was 20 years ago. Then I like...beat it three or four times in a couple of days. I don't know why but it just works. And with save states I was able to fight Starwolf repeatedly. I did that dozens of times over those same two days.
It's probably the game I've replayed the most times from start to finish (which makes sense since it's kinda short and arcade-y by nature). I still come back to it every now and again to this day!
Definitely in my top 3 favorite N64 games of all time, to me this is a perfect game. Still play it at least a couple times a year! Btw really great screencapture quality!
Thanks for watching! Star Fox 64 is such a timeless classic. At the moment, I don't have a video output solution for the N64, so I had to use an emulator to record this footage haha
I've played and beaten this game more than any other. It's practically perfect. Love the secret levels. You forgot one boss, the statue running in the tunnel.
Star Fox 64 is my favorite game of all time, and I don’t even have any nostalgia from it, it’s just that good. I have sunk a lot of hours into that game, with my best run ever being a 1504, and then the next run I tied it exactly. I’ve played this game way too much. Also, for anyone wanting to improve, here are some basic tips: 1: Do whatever is in your power to get the hyper lasers on Corneria and not lose them ever 2: Charge shot groups of enemies, as when the game tells you hit +x, that means you are getting bonus hits, as when you destroy groups of enemies simultaneously with a charge shot, you get points for the number of enemies you destroyed plus the number of enemies that got caught in the blast (all the enemies that were hit but weren’t hit directly by the charge shot) 3: When it comes to shooting your laser, unless you can mash extremely fast, the better method of shooting is this: when you hold down the button to do a charge shot, the game fires 2 or 3 quick lasers before actually charging it, so if you can learn to time you presses just right, you can shoot extremely fast 4: Aside from the basics I just said, there are strategies to get the medals on each stage, so look them up
- What's wrong, Fox? - Nothing. Nothing's wrong. The scores appear, and in the final seconds before the screen fades out, you can see a light passing by on top of Great Fox's wings. That's an Arwing. That's James. James McCloud is alive. We both saw what happened (We = Fox and the player), we both know that nobody in the Lylat System will believe us, but we saw it. That moment goddammit
I absolutely love this. Thank you So much for making this video. Here's to hoping for a brand new game in the coming years. Regardless, Starfox 64 in my heart will Always be one of The best games of All time! 🥰
Aw thanks haha, I always loved the Star Fox 64 menu music. It's very calming, sometimes I'd just stay on the menu, sitting there and listening to it as a kid, so I wanted to kinda pay tribute to it with the ending screen
I was able to get all the medals once, all it really does is unlock hard mode and Fox is wearing a pair of sunglasses, the hardest medal for me was the one on Venom 1, Venom has two medals, the medal from Venom 2 (the one where Star Wolf comes back) is relatively easy
Funny, I played all of the games you mentioned at the start, Ocarina of time less so however since i was just a kid and i had no clue where to go, plus it was really scary.. :(
Star Fox 64 is my favorite game. Nobody, not even Nintendo, has been able to replicate it. The only thing wrong with it is the frame rate, but it is pretty easy to look past in this one for the most part. The best game ever.
I gave away my N64 a couple years ago to my cousin, who gave it to me in the first place, and all the games and controllers. But let me tell you.. if I ever make enough money to buy myself another N64 the first game I'm buying is Star Fox 64. I still play it on my 2ds but it just isn't the same as using those amazing old school controller. This game is still my favorite game to ever play.
@@Fobb I played it on my 2ds last Saturday/Sunday and beat the whole thing going only the 'hard' route. I think that's the first time I ever got past Zoness. I don't often go to Aquas or Zoness.
@@natevanslyke990 I always struggle with dodging the searchlights on Zoness, one of them always seems to catch me so I rarely ever get to Sector Z from there
@@Fobb I had tried to avoid them on Saturday night but that was over pretty quickly and I couldn't figure out how to beat the boss. So when I lost a life I decided to call it a night. 😅 I went to try again Sunday and the 2ds saved my progress so I didn't have to go through Corneria, Sector Y and Aquas again! It took me a couple tries to not be caught by the lights but I did it. I got all the way to Area 6 with Slippy, Peppy and Falco but Slippy got taken out just before the boss.
@@natevanslyke990 Ahhh yeah, the Zoness boss is a tricky one - you can only damage him with bombs if memory serves me correctly. Slippy being the only one shot down is just typical 😂
I'm halfway through the video and I wanted to add before I forget. If you get a medal on every level you unlock Master difficulty. I love this difficulty, if you hit an obstacle you loose a wing. Kind of brutal but once you get medals and all on master difficulty You unlock some cool things too, including a multiplayer mode where you can just play on foot and shoot each other with giant cannons similar to Star Fox assault on the GameCube. Using the Nintendo switch expansion with the N64 controller this game is an absolute cakewalk since you can save your game before every level and use the fully upgraded laser power-ups at the start of every level. It really makes the acquiring the metals for every level so much easier, almost to the point that it's cheating lol
@@Fobb I mean I believe it's acceptable to use safe states if it's at the start of a level. Save states are more legitimate to me than the lives system. Besides I already did it the right way on N64 hardware and then we virtual console using the GameCube controller (which was a huge downgrade) I don't know man. It's better if a new player plays The game to 100% completion using save states compared to if they never played the game at all. That's a victory in itself considering I don't know anyone who cares about these old properties anymore
Honestly I felt like the Star Fox limbo is because Nintendo keeps trying to make something of it that it's not. On rails, multiple routes, ships with freakin lasers and a ton of Falco sass. I feel like that's what most fans want, Starfox 64, but bigger without one off gimmicks trying to start the newest trend. I just want some freakin puppets with laser beams attached to their freakin ships.
How did you get such a crisp coloring and vision of the game? Are you using any HD transformer? I assume you used the nintendo 64 console. Thanks for sharing your video.
Thanks for watching! For this video, I used an emulator to record footage and upscaled the game to about 3x its original resolution, which is why it looks so crisp. At the moment, I don't have a solution for recording footage directly from the N64 which is why I opted for that in the end.
@@Fobb Thank you for your answer. I'll try to get my hands on the EON super 64 and the mClassic 64. However, it might not be an easy task to get those skipped to Europe. 😳
Honestly had StarFox gone the way Ace Combat did, with each new entry just being a further refined version of the core gameplay with even more bombastic missions and set pieces, it would've been perfect That said I still greatly enjoyed Assault lol
I liked Star Fox on the Snes back in the day, but with many games... the N64 edition was far superior to the Snes versions. Star Fox 64 was one such game, it was a re-imagining of the Snes game... turned to 11. I know that Shigeru Myamoto hates to make the "same game" multiple times but everything we would want from another Star Fox game is... more of the same. New levels, possibly new moves. Another game that where was a crazy upgrade to their Snes versions was Mario Kat 64. The N64 didn't have allot games back in the day, but some real bangers, like Perfect Dark, Super Smash Bros among many more.
The introduction of 3D graphics on the N64 made its games such a massive step up from the SNES. They definitely went for a quality over quantity approach with the games, and that's created so many memorable titles!
Would you be shocked if I told you James is actually alive in 64? He leads you out as you head out 9/10 he’ll go straight out, 1% he’ll turn left or right When you head to cordina if you look in the top right corner you’ll see a shooting star. That’s James’s ship. When you read the storyline it says “captured” never says what happened to him.
He isn't alive, its just Fox hallucinating. There is no actual confirmation on him surviving while there are countless claims of him being dead from many characters. Unless nintendo puts out a game that furthers the storyline that's just a theory.
@@NickFord92 they only think he's dead because he's gone, MIA. At the very least, in Zero, he's not just a hallucination and Andross's robot decoy wonders why he won't stay dead.
@@beardalaxy Zero's prologue also explicitly states that he died, does it not? Generally speaking, younger protagonists (think 25 or younger) generally have at least one parent dead, and it's not uncommon for both to be dead. Especially in video games, where I believe that unless parents are explicitly stated to be alive, they are generally dead. In a case like this, where James is MIA under circumstances where it is extremely likely that he died, I think it's safe to say that he is, in fact, dead.
StarFox 64 is always the answer. Banjo kazooie is a close second but since I could play the superior version on XBLA / rare replay I don't care to view it as N64 property anymore
I mean, the Xbox version is definitely superior, but they didn’t even bother to upgrade it to 60fps. They probably couldn’t because the game’s framerate was tied to the physics. They used to do that in old games. But the Nintendo Switch Online version is great too, especially if you have a Nintendo 64 controller. I much prefer playing Banjo with that. And it also have save states that really come in handy.
@@davion4777 I haven't thought of the N64 online for switch at all. The safe states make it cool but considering I play each level to strive for 100% the frustration of dying on N64 means you have to recollect all the notes. I mean sure with the switch you could just reload a save (there's no rewinding on the N64 switch online) but that really takes the spirit out of the game for me personally... It's just the damn notes all respawning in the entire level that has the either Nintendo version lacking below the Xbox for me. As for the Xbox, I never cared about the framerate but the stop and swap rewards or very, very disappointing. I mean it would be cool if I was into the Lego racing game that is BK nuts and bolts. But I'm just not, not saying it's a bad game. Just saying it's not for me. Also BK1 is always my strongest favorite over BK2
I will say I some what disagree… the alternate path, is some what disappointing… mostly as it reads as Nentendo power bait… alot of these secret paths are not a natural assumption. Was disapointed to find out in adaulthood, it wasent point based and just knowing the secret.
@@NickFord92 Replayability my star fox 64 is far more repetitive than assault and the gameplay in assault is far better than 64 the landmaster is a bitch to control in 64 compared to assault.
@@kurokamina8429 Right classic Star Fox can't appreciate a great game like adventures and assault with a way better story and fun gameplay compared to star fox and star fox 64.
@@MadSociety-uy6zg assault has the awful tank controls for fox walking around on foot and its in 6/10 of the levels you can play don't bs me with bad controls or repetitive gameplay dude they're very similar in that regard. What 64 has that assault lacks is branching level paths, for me that's leagues ahead of the same levels in the same order over and over. landmaster and blue marine take up 3 out of the 15 possible stages while the on foot sections of assault take place in 6 out of the 10 linear levels. idk about you but I cant stand the on foot sections nearly as much as the landmaster or blue marine levels. also I love adventures, its one of my favorite games but it's not a rail shooter so idk why you're bringing it up.
Starfox 64 was is and always will be steaming hot garbage with garbage controls, the land master is unresponsive mainly in the thrusters, and slippy and peppy or even falco being on your team but not doing absolutely Shit the entire game literally. They don't shoot enemies they just fly around and whine in your ear that they need help. The flying is absolute dog shot especially in the free flying missions.
The lack of 360 flying helps my enjoyment of Starfox a lot actually. The side characters are mainly there to add a little bit of flair to the game, but they do help you out if you keep them alive. Notably, Slippy being dead means you can't see enemy health bars since he's the tech guy.
Wow… this take is actually horrible, my friend. You are right about the friends being useless, but that’s literally the only thing you’re right about. The flight is basically perfect and the controls are super responsive. I really don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s literally one of the N64 games that aged better.

It's honestly crazy how good this game is still, not only did it have a perfect foundation, but it's so polished
Out of all the games from the N64 era, it's arguably held up the best. It really is timeless!
This game was incredibly cinematic for it's time too.
Agreed, love that credits scene especially!
Sweet, those are some real classics!
I've never noticed that little touch in the cutscene, I think that means I should go back and replay SF64 again 😂
Just played through this game for this first time last night on the easy route and wow. I cant stop thinking about it and want to get the true ending.

Man, I didn't even realise that - this game is truly genius!
THAT was the reason??”
For the first time ever I was able to reach Aquas, the underwater level.
Chills every time!
Perfect game and great review; I miss when video games were so unpretentious and no rail shooter has ever topped Star Fox 64 imo
My most meme'd and repeated line was from the train boss: "Come a little closer!"
My brother and I repeated that one the most.
I spent an entire summer as a kid just MASTERING this game. Getting every medal. Every high score. I had every element of the game memorized. I knew all the paths and tricks.
That Macbeth train boss had so many great lines hahaha
So back in '97 i wanted an N64, and i had to save up enough money to get one. I went to Toys R Us to get one once i finally did, but i only had enough to get the console. A few months later, i had saved up enough to get my first game, and Star Fox 64 had just come out not long prior.
It's like it was meant to be. I already loved the original Star Fox and that boxart just spoke to me. Instantly fell in love with this game. Easily one of my favorite games of all time. Massively replayable and ridiculously quotable, gotta love it.
Man, coming from the first Star Fox game, SF64 must've been the coolest thing ever to you as a kid! Such a fantastic game!
Love that for you. Great memory!
This deserves waaaay more views. I remember spending so much time playing this game as a kid. I still have it :)
Thanks so much for the kind words! It's still such a fun time to this day!
ok,story time. i had this game..we lived in Germany during my childhood. during the balkan wars. in 98 we returned to a post war Bosnia (imagine fallout 4 just without gouls, supermutants and radiation..) one of my uncles loved to play star fox. to me it was always fascinating when adults play video games.. and my uncle was good at the game.like really good..also mario kart..that was a hit in my family..lots of good memories and family bonding...that uncle..offed himself few months ago... i love this game
Shit, that's heavy, sorry for your loss and everything you had to put through. It's reconforting to know we still have the capacity to create fond memories after all the grief we endure c:
One of the best examples of great game design.
"COCKY LITTLE FREAKS!"
I quoted this line in gym class in elementary school and the teacher didn't like that at all.
So many quotable lines in this game - "Disrespectful little whelps!" is another personal favourite 😂
"I'm no match for you... I admit defeat."
"You gonna listen to that monkey?"
"Haaa... you're not as stupid as you LOOK!"
I really feel like its a near-masterpiece.
@FibreOpticBroadbean I'm not sure but does the 3ds version have expert mode. Where the enemies shot twice as fast?
This game was clearly put together with so much care, such a wonderful little package!
If you want the medal for Corneria you have to fly between the two double tower buildings that look slightly damaged and under bridge supports. It will spawn extra enemies that are easy to take down with one charged shot
This was incredibly well written. Well done.
Thanks, I really appreciate that!
Then, one day, I came home from school, and my sister closest to me in age greeted me excitedly "We found a secret ending on Corneria through the waterfall!"
Unfortunately they couldn't get the medal required to access Aquas, so went back to Katina, but now we knew the other levels were playable.
@@Fobb Not to sound like an old timer, but they just don't make games like that any more!
This game is awesome:
Fastpaced with a lot of action;
Several levels designs (Surfaces battles, landmaster, aquatic, space);
Landmaster and all range mode adds extra layer of experience. Almost feels like a new game;
Several routes with secrets and conditions to complete;
Amazing VA
Charming characters, even bosses with little screen time have a good development
It's a compact adventure, but they packed a lot into it!
There's just something so special about the voice lines in this game, it wouldn't be the same without them!
SF64 was the genre perfected, they should have just kept the same core game and have new campaigns for the sequels.
That's almost what Assault was! It is pretty much what Zero was too, but they miffed it with the control gimmicks.
I want a new Star Fox on Switch or Star Fox 64 remaster!!!!
We're long overdue a new Star Fox, it needs to happen one day 🙏
Those uncompressed voices are so clean man.
I've got this gem with my N64 to Christmas 1999. Good old days...
Crazy that it's been over 25 years since this game came out! In just a couple of years it'll have been 30!
Despite my lack of knowledge in the series, I enjoy this breakdown. :-)
Thanks, I appreciate that!
12:56 If you let the clip continue, you'd see a shooting star above the Great Fox's rear left wing, that's James McCloud as it's only in this ending.
Perfect game
Star Fox 64 and Star Wars Rogue Squadron were my two favorite games as a kid!
Played a ton of SF64, but never touched Rogue Squadron - maybe I ought to give that a shot!
Starfox, Smash Bros, Zelda, Mario Kart, Diddy kong racing... It was a great time to be a young teen
Such an awesome lineup of classics!
They need to, and I hate admitting this, a prequel. Telling the story of James, Peppy and Pigma. That is a game I would buy a Switch for.
That'd be awesome, I'd love to see James' story play out
I've played and beaten this game more than any other. It's practically perfect. Love the secret levels.
You forgot one boss, the statue running in the tunnel.
All of the secret levels and branching paths were so cool to discover for the first time!
@@Fobb It also made me realize that multiple pathways are a viable way to make games more replayable. Resident Evil 3 also comes to mind.
SF64 would have been an amazing arcade experience. Can you imagine it with cockpit style cabinet with a flight yokel?
Dude that would be INSANE, I need that in my life ASAP
Star Fox 64 is my favorite game of all time, and I don’t even have any nostalgia from it, it’s just that good. I have sunk a lot of hours into that game, with my best run ever being a 1504, and then the next run I tied it exactly. I’ve played this game way too much. Also, for anyone wanting to improve, here are some basic tips:
1: Do whatever is in your power to get the hyper lasers on Corneria and not lose them ever
2: Charge shot groups of enemies, as when the game tells you hit +x, that means you are getting bonus hits, as when you destroy groups of enemies simultaneously with a charge shot, you get points for the number of enemies you destroyed plus the number of enemies that got caught in the blast (all the enemies that were hit but weren’t hit directly by the charge shot)
3: When it comes to shooting your laser, unless you can mash extremely fast, the better method of shooting is this: when you hold down the button to do a charge shot, the game fires 2 or 3 quick lasers before actually charging it, so if you can learn to time you presses just right, you can shoot extremely fast
4: Aside from the basics I just said, there are strategies to get the medals on each stage, so look them up
My favorite will always be Goldeneye 64. That soundtrack is iconic.
A classic for sure!
Thank you for the tribute to THE game. ❤
I love this game to bits, glad I could do it justice with this review 🙏
This is probably my favorite 1st party n64 game. I say that fully knowing what im saying.
It has some stiff competition, but man - it's definitely a strong contender for the title
I love how one of the bad guys is just called "Andrew"
- What's wrong, Fox?
- Nothing. Nothing's wrong.
The scores appear, and in the final seconds before the screen fades out, you can see a light passing by on top of Great Fox's wings. That's an Arwing. That's James.
James McCloud is alive. We both saw what happened (We = Fox and the player), we both know that nobody in the Lylat System will believe us, but we saw it. That moment goddammit
Such a touching ending!
I recently picked it up to do all medals both normal and expert and man, what a blast!
I need to set aside some time to do this one day, sounds like a really fun challenge!
@@Fobb it is
100% great video.
Glad you enjoyed!
Not sure about perfect. Getting that medal for Sector Z is a fucking nightmare
MISSILE APPROACHING. DISTANCE 50.
That's why this game is simply... Perfection!
Few games are deserving of that title, but this one may just be!
I absolutely love this. Thank you So much for making this video. Here's to hoping for a brand new game in the coming years. Regardless, Starfox 64 in my heart will Always be one of The best games of All time! 🥰
We absolutely need a new Star Fox game, fingers crossed it'll happen one day!
Thanks for this video! I really wish they would do a good remake or predecessor.
Glad you enjoyed! A prequel with the story of James and the original Star Fox team would be so cool to see!
I loved the screen at the end of the video
Aw thanks haha, I always loved the Star Fox 64 menu music. It's very calming, sometimes I'd just stay on the menu, sitting there and listening to it as a kid, so I wanted to kinda pay tribute to it with the ending screen
I was able to get all the medals once, all it really does is unlock hard mode and Fox is wearing a pair of sunglasses, the hardest medal for me was the one on Venom 1, Venom has two medals, the medal from Venom 2 (the one where Star Wolf comes back) is relatively easy
I've heard that the Venom 1 medal is evil, so I don't blame you for struggling with that one!
I would be fine with ANOTHER remaster of this
Honestly, as much as I'd like to see a fully-fledged new Star Fox, I wouldn't say no
STAR FOX 64 IS THE GOAT
It's genuinely my favorite game ever, I've probably put a few thousand hours in it over my lifetime
It's such a timeless game, I'll always come back to give it a replay every now and then!
Funny, I played all of the games you mentioned at the start, Ocarina of time less so however since i was just a kid and i had no clue where to go, plus it was really scary.. :(
Ocarina also confused me a bit as a kid haha, it was only when I came back to it when I was older that I began to appreciate it more!
One of the best endings in a video game.
Star Fox 64 is my favorite game. Nobody, not even Nintendo, has been able to replicate it. The only thing wrong with it is the frame rate, but it is pretty easy to look past in this one for the most part. The best game ever.
Hopefully this game will get fully decompiled one day, then we'll be able to play it at a buttery-smooth framerate like the SM64 and OoT PC ports 🙏
@@Fobb boy do I have news for you. There's a decomp going right now and it's over 80% done.
Something about the original is just really special, haha
Haha, it's always so hard to fight the urge to use save states when they're right there!
That last sentence perfectly summarises the very essence of Star Fox hahaha
I wish you could skip the end scenes and credits, but otherwise, this game is a Masterpiece imo
I have't watched the video at all, I just came here to answer the thumbnail, yes,! starfox 64 is a perfect game
Absolutely!
I always hated this game. I should play it again.
Would definitely recommend giving it a second chance!
@@Fobb I actually just did on RetroArch. What was I thinking!? This game is great!
Which version was your video captured from?
I was emulating the N64 version using Mupen64 👍
Star Fox 64 is heavily inspired by Star Wars, the many planets you get to explore reminds me of George Lucas's creation.
My new idea make part 2
Honestly had StarFox gone the way Ace Combat did, with each new entry just being a further refined version of the core gameplay with even more bombastic missions and set pieces, it would've been perfect
That said I still greatly enjoyed Assault lol
Yeah, shame it didn't play out that way, but you never know what might happen in future!
when's the next episode of pokemon insurgence
Today
@@Fobb better see it by 11:59pm then
How are you not going to mention expert mode at all?
He leads you out as you head out 9/10 he’ll go straight out, 1% he’ll turn left or right
When you head to cordina if you look in the top right corner you’ll see a shooting star.
The best Star Fox game Nintendo ever made.
Let's all come back here in 20 years when this comment will unfortunately still be true.
I hope for our sake that your comment will be proven wrong 🙏
SF64 is a masterpiece
Holds up so well, even to this day!
Lylat Wars is a good game.
It's a real classic!
I will say I some what disagree… the alternate path, is some what disappointing… mostly as it reads as Nentendo power bait… alot of these secret paths are not a natural assumption.
Was disapointed to find out in adaulthood, it wasent point based and just knowing the secret.
Why not review the 3D version instead?
Because he doesn't have to.
dis gaem suxx0rz call of duty is better
I wish star fox assault would get the recognition it deserves it's far better than star fox 64.
Yeah but classic fans focus way more on the flaws then the pros which is funny cause the landmaster and the sub are far from perfect.
If assault had the replayability factor that 64 does, you might be right, but it does not.
StarFox 64 looked like shit, when it was released. I couldn't stand how corny this game was, especially compared to the original.
The flying is absolute dog shot especially in the free flying missions.
who hurt you?
The lack of 360 flying helps my enjoyment of Starfox a lot actually. The side characters are mainly there to add a little bit of flair to the game, but they do help you out if you keep them alive. Notably, Slippy being dead means you can't see enemy health bars since he's the tech guy.
Wow… this take is actually horrible, my friend. You are right about the friends being useless, but that’s literally the only thing you’re right about.
The flight is basically perfect and the controls are super responsive. I really don’t know what you’re talking about.
It’s literally one of the N64 games that aged better.
