  • Star Fox: A franchise now infamous for its inconsistency, constant reboots and more recently, its inactivity.
    The series has had a really interesting life cycle, being passed around a whole range of different developers, which resulted in games of varying degrees of quality. The game I'll be discussing in this retrospective review is strangely not talked about very often nowadays and this is a crying shame - from story line to mission structure, it brought some really cool ideas to the table and helped to evolve the Star Fox franchise in what felt like a natural way. I'm FibreOpticBroadbean and this is The Untold Potential of Star Fox Assault!
    Music:

    It's validating to know there are others that feel the same way about this game. I think so many of Assault's efforts to advance the IP's identity and build on it on the gameplay fronts as well as characters and setting tend to go underappreciated. We have never seen any similar effort for the StarFox franchise since. Except maybe StarLink which in and of itself felt fresh after Zero.

      Thanks for watching! It's a shame that Assault is largely forgotten nowadays, in spite of its efforts. I feel like people are growing to appreciate it as time goes on, especially considering the state of the Star Fox franchise currently. It's an unfortunate situation, but hopefully whatever the next Star Fox game ends up being takes some cues from Assault.

      I agree that SF Assault is actually a great game that did quite a bit to advance SF's storyline. That's something Nintendo has no interest in doing nowadays.
      With that said, I would've done the ending in SF Assault differently. For example, Fox shouldn't have been aware of Peppy's plan to help them to the Aparoids.
      Instead, I think the last scene should've shown Peppy on a different ship. The story reveals that he and Rob were rescued from the Great Fox by Corneria's dog soldiers. Fox, unaware of Peppy's plan to escape, is overjoyed that Peppy survived. However, as a consequence of his sacrifice, Peppy has a permanent limp or even ends up wheelchair-bound due to leg injuries that he sustained in the explosion. Additionally, the Great Fox has been destroyed. It's gone. But, ultimately, the other SF crew are just happy he's alive. That's what matters most to them. That's how I think the ending should've been.
      Alternatively, we could've gotten a darker, bittersweet ending. Although they won they war against the Aparoids, sadly, Peppy died in the explosion. When Fox reports this terrible news to the General, they plan a memorial service for Peppy. The game ends with Fox being downtrodden over, once again, facing circumstances beyond his control, namely losing another father figure to a war. Just before Fox starts weeping, the game fades to black. That would've sucked hard, but it would've made that scene more powerful. In any future games, Peppy, at the very most, could've shown up as a ghost or a memory in a few scenes, fulfilling a similar role to James McCloud. It's not like he wouldn't have any significance to the series anymore.
      I didn't mind Peppy surviving, but some actual consequences for Peppy's bravery would've made his sacrifice more momentous. The ending is really the only aspect of SF Assault that I think was done poorly. It felt like a "Saturday morning cartoon" ending. "Nope, we can't have a crippling injury or death here. That's too dark and serious for the kids!". Nintendo and namco marketed SF Assault as the most dramatic and mature entry in the SF series, so they should've gone ALL the way towards a darker storyline, not part of the way. Plus, around the time SF Assault came out, gamers wanted more cinematic storylines in their video games, so it would've helped SF Assault with gaining attention from gamers.
      Otherwise, freaking great game! I loved it. I didn't want a reboot of the SF storyline. I wish Nintendo had continued with the storyline that Assault had established.

      @@TheDr502 Regarding Peppy's sacrifice, maybe it's just an awkward translation, but the fact that Peppy says 'get out of here' instead of something more general like 'get going' or even just stopping at 'go' makes me think the whole 'ramming the Great Fox into a forcefield blocking the entrance to the core' thing would have been more fitting, and also more tragic as the cap off of the game. Not long after I first played through the game, I imagined an alternate Peppy's Sacrifice scene where the forcefield appears to trap them inside the collapsing core after they defeated the queen. Just a final f**k you that was set up beforehand, it starts to form just in time for the team to see it, but too soon for them to squeeze past it. Then the nose of the Great Fox suddenly breaks through the shield, and everyone exclaims Peppy's name not in anguish, but shock. Peppy tells them to get going, and then some emotion briefly comes over them as the reality of the situation starts to set in, but Peppy doesn't give them time to start breaking down before he shouts a slightly altered version of his last lines from the original cutscene: 'What are you fools doing? There's no time! Go! Get out of here!' Then they immediately get out and escape the planet's blast radius.

      If it's any consolation, Star Fox Command is not part of Star Fox canon. The game's director had stated that (in addition to none of the endings being canon) the game itself is in an alternate timeline from 64 to Assualt as its own "what-if" scenario.

    As someone who's a huge fan of this game, I can safely say the game deserves more love. The voice acting is really good, and so is the story. I know a lot of fans don't like the on-foot parts of the game, but I think they just take some getting used to (I'd recommend using the dual sticks setting). The game is obviously not without its faults, but considering Command and Zero were worse by comparison, I don't find that many things wrong with the game, since they just feel minor. Also, it might just be me, but I think the Aparoids were very interesting enemies. The queen especially was a much more interesting enemy compared to Andross, though I'm just saying that since Nintendo seems to like him maybe just a little too much. Not to mention, she actually gave me chills with the minimal dialogue she does have. "All for us. All things in the universe, will be ours. Bow to us! Submit to us!" All that, in a voice that's somewhat robotic but certainly not boring.
    Command and Zero just felt like they took every wrong step. The biggest problem with those two games, for me at least, was that they didn't feel fun to play. Assault kept my attention all the way through. That's how you know a game is good.

      I also think time placement really mattered here too. If you flip the places of assault and adventures by the year, Assault would have been one of the best shooters on the console easily. This has to be my favorite Star Fox game. The controls feel great! I prefer the Dual Analog controls the most. I love the story a lot! It's original and gets out of 64 territory. Thankfully it's not a remake of 64 and thank heavens they didn't shoehorn in Andross as the one behind the Aparoid Invasion. The Arc with pigma had to be my favorite parts in the game. Trying to make him just as important of an antagonist alongside The Aparoid Queen is great. Nintendo definitely made themselves a secondary StarFox masterpiece. Sure it's not as timeless as 64, but I love this game as it is!

  • @Phirestar
    @Phirestar 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I never had an N64 growing up, so the GameCube era Star Fox tittles ended up being my only interactions with the series. (I did have Command too, but I lost interest after like one or two levels and never played it. It was probably the awkward DS controls that put me off.)
    I am honestly surprised by how much I came to love Assault, over the years. It wasn’t a favorite of mine back in the day, but it still became one of my most replayed titles from that time period. Despite what older Star Fox fans might’ve felt about it, I quite like the variety of gameplay that Assault offers. I think that mixture of on-ground and flight-based missions help break up the pacing and leads to the game being more engaging to play, on top of also expanding and innovating the formula to create something new. I remember reading a comment one time where someone was saying how they wish Nintendo would do something new with Star Fox, and someone replied claiming that there “wasn’t a lot that you could do with Star Fox’ gameplay”. And I think that Assault clearly shows how that’s just not true. You don’t always have to grow longer in order to innovate or to create originality; there are times when width is just as important as depth. I feel that Nintendo in particular specializes in this sort of thing, as a lot of their games tend to have fairly simple mechanics and system, but a great _amount_ of them in order to compensate.
    As for the story of Assault, that is possibly my favorite part of the game. I love the premise of Team Star Fox in their role of the frontline heroes, the ones who take the plunge into the heart of enemy territory and risk their lives to complete the mission. They play into that “leader of the pack” archetype, and I was enthralled by that idea growing up; those were the kinds of characters in media that I looked up to and admired when I was a kid, and that I fantasized of being like. And they did an excellent job of portraying the high-stakes nature of that in the plot. There’s a strong sense of danger and urgency surrounding the Apariods, with how they spread throughout the galaxy and infect everything in their path. The way that they turn allies and foes against Fox and his team, and the way in which they all fly headlong into what appears like their final act. This was pretty much my only frame of reference for the Star Fox “universe”, and I came to love the world and its characters from this game alone.
    One other thing that wasn’t mentioned in this video was this game’s soundtrack. Star Fox: Assault has one of the greatest OSTs of any game that I’ve ever played. It nails the tone and fully immerses you into that sensation of this being a grand, epic battle to save the Lylat System. I love orchestral soundtracks, and this is one of the best ones.
    I hope that some day there can be a game that follows in Assault’s footsteps, and innovates upon it further. Maybe combine the branching missions design of Star Fox 64 with the varied gameplay styles of Assault, and offer even more options for ways to approach combat. (Customizable ships, perhaps?)

    • @Fobb
      @Fobb  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great point about the OST, the music in this game is absolutely phenomenal. If Nintendo ever brings this series back, it'll be interesting to see what direction they take it in. Time will tell, but I'm feeling hopeful that it wouldn't just be another Star Fox 64 again!

    Assault was my game, when I found out about the game randomly (I went to a store and they had those consoles set up to have games on them and one set up was Assault) and tried it, it was so hard in the beginning to even get into as the controls felt so weird and not as smooth as I remembered for 64. It took me like 5 minutes of playing the game in the store to tell my dad he should buy this game and well he did x) I have nothing but good memories with the main trilogy about this franchise. I played Command too but god damn was that game hard and I had to cheat to even win once (the controls were even worse in this game and planning wasn´t my go to option for any star fox game sooo)

  • @TheDr502
    @TheDr502 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    A new Star Fox title could definitely take some cues from Star Fox Assault and Starlink. I'd definitely like to see Nintendo implement open-world gameplay in which Fox can get out of his ship and go inside shops to find parts to upgrade his Arwing. That would be pretty rad. They could make it more combat-based than Starlink, which, as nice of a game as it was, got a little too fetch-questy. Continuing the story from where Assault left off with a new enemy or the Aparoids trying to get revenge could be cool, too.
    But, will it sell? Will fans like it, or will they say it doesn't feel enough like the N64 title? Will they complain that it's no longer an on-rails shooter, a style of gaming that largely died out by the start of 21st century? Should Nintendo use these ideas in a new SF title, or just make a new game series entirely?

      I really like what Starlink did with the "open-space" exploration and how you could seamlessly travel from planet to planet. It had some cool ideas, which like you said were bogged down by the repetitive nature of the gameplay - something that a Star Fox game would hopefully be able to fix!

    • @TheDr502
      @TheDr502 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Fobb Yeah, that'd be perfect! Sure, Starlink is a different game from Star Fox, and this is a Starlink title. However, I feel like Star Fox could take that open-world aspect of Starlink and expand on it significantly. They could make it more combat-based and invite more opportunities for exploration. It could go a long way towards making Star Fox games feel more immersive, interactive, and cinematic, three qualities that consumers like to see in video games today. The Star Fox universe is an excellent environment for open-world gameplay (and other types of gameplay for that matter). There's a lot of unseen potential with this series.
      By exploration, I mean that Fox could get out of his ship not just to shoot enemies, but also to investigate the cause of, say, massive earthquakes in Aquas' oceans or explore bars, theaters, cafes, and other amenities around Corneria. Panther mentioned one of his favorite cafes in Star Fox Assault. How's about we get to SEE and go INSIDE one of those cafes? I'd totally dig that. By "combat-based", I mean that you could fly around the Lylat system (or even into other solar systems) and get into random shootouts with random outlaws or members of whoever the new enemy empire is.
      I'm not saying that they have to introduce every single fan's idea out there into a new SF game. That could end up with the game becoming too bloated and pleasing no one. But, I'd love to see a genuine effort to evolve SF beyond just an on-rails shooter and make it feel like a game series that can succeed in the 2020s, like they do with Mario and Zelda. Look at other on-rails shooters like Xevious or Starblade. When was the last time those games were relevant? On-rails shooters are fun and nostalgic, but they're also outdated and simplistic by today's standards
      Don't bring back Andross and James McCloud again, Nintendo. They're dead and gone. Let this series move forward into the 2020s. Quit retelling the same story. Quit trapping Star Fox in the 1990s because the 1990s is a fond, but distant memory.

    Great review. I loved it. Everything you said about it was so true. My Twin brother and I loved Fox and Falco in Super Smash Bros Melee, but then our older brothers rented Assault, and we just fell in love with it. We especially loved Fox and Krystal's romantic relationship. In comparison to Adventures, their voices and character design were so much better in Assault. Also, Krystal was a great addition to the team, adding a feminine touch, which made it feel better. Another thing is that Star Wolf feels complete with Wolf having TWO loyal allies who will never leave him. Panther, who is attracted to Krystal, makes that team feel all the more inviting. Also, we love playing the multiplayer together, which is really fun and amusing. To us , this is an underrated Masterpiece, and we'll always love it to pieces, corny dialogue and all. And we want the franchise to continue with Fox and all his friends, as well as Wolf, Leon and Panther. Thank you for this review. 😊👍

    You know, I keep reading all these comments and it’s nice to see this game got some love, but I think a lot of people who had the GameCube games, and maybe are a bit younger, think those of us who grew up with StarFox on SNES and StarFox64 wanted a complete reboot of the 64 game with better graphics.
    Since 1997 we just wanted another rail shooter starfox. That’s the genre of game that it is. I know this game is considered one of the “good ones”. I’m fine with that, a lot of us are, if this was the only game that made that departure, it wouldn’t have been so bad to have this game be a bit more experimental and give a few game mechanics to lend to future games.
    It’s just that we never got a proper sequel. Every star fox game since has felt like a weird, other game with star fox sort of just slapped on to the name of it.
    This game would’ve aged better and sat better with the community had it not been one of the first games down a different path, adventures excluded.
    So when a lot of you see fans complaining, that’s where I feel it’s coming from. This is probably the last decent StarFox game released, and it probably deserves to be remembered as such.

    I very rarely hear anything about Assault these days, despite playing it quite extensively back in my Gamecube days. And you touched upon a lot of things people very easily overlook about it; while the Lylat system always seemed to have some kind of perilous event happening, this time it seemed genuinely dire, and so many of the themes and atmosphere were dark, even disturbing. It *_felt_* like things were doomed.
    And perhaps even less talked about is how it set up a perfect springboard to launch into a proper series format with a continuation off of Assault; the Lylat system is in shambles from the aftermath of the war with this strange alien, hive-minded infestation that came from God-Only-Knows-Where, and that means it needs Starfox more than ever before as all manner of threats, big and small, try to work their way in and cause problems while everyone sets out to rebuild. Politics, intrigue, exploration of the furthest reaches of the Lylat system, long lost characters coming back . . .
    There are so many different ways you could go with that, and they have so much untapped potential for further delving into lore and side stories, instead of just treating it almost like it never happened and just rehashing he same Starfox plot point over and over.
    Maybe one day. I can keep fantasizing.
    On an aside, I also love the effort they put into the Multiplayer maps too. A lot of them are fun to just screw around on, which I did quite a bit, and the music even for those was, as expected, phenomenal; Zoness Sea Base had an absolute banger of a track. The people who made this game clearly tried their best and it shows.

    @2:40 I'm curious, what was off about the timing of that line?
    Falco's character is established to be a bit hot-headed, and he knew he was the one being told to shut up by Panther the moment he uttered the word, "quiet". So I felt the timing made sense, even if it does get a chuckle.

    • @Fobb
      @Fobb  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha yeah, that line probably wasn't the best example of what I was pointing out - I think at times the game's voice-acting just feels stilted, which can probably be attributed to the fact that the voice actors recorded their lines completely separately ((I believe that was stated in this interview th-cam.com/video/41w6Qbx3N18/w-d-xo.html). Since they didn't actually talk to each other, the delivery of some lines just felt a bit unnatural.

      Yeah, I can remember some instances in the dialogue where it felt a little weird. Overall, though, I think they were well-directed. Any anomalies I noticed weren't enough to completely take me out of the immersion (except for the ending a bit considering Fox's corny ending lines, heh).

    Star Fox Assault was probably the best way to bring Star Fox into the modern age of gaming. At its best it seamlessly blended the old style of arcade style space levels and the evolving tps style of combat. True there are definitely rough patches and room for impoverishments but it was the first game of what could have been a new era for Star Fox. The biggest problem with Star Fox is the short arcade style gameplay of the original doesn’t fit the longer preferred games of the modern age. They simply aren’t worth the cost of admission as games become more expensive to create. Nintendo has proven its abilities in tps since so I think an assault or maybe an KI: Uprising style game would be the best way to continue the series.

    Given that I grew up in the 90s, I of course knew about Star Fox - or Starwing and Lylat Wars - but I never really played it, save for getting Zero due to being a Platinum Games fan and still thinking Star Fox was kinda cool. Though more recently I went through 64, Adventures and Assault and I really enjoyed my time with them. It just sucks that Star Fox suffers a similar problem to Sonic The Hedgehog since the 2010s, the constant leaning on nostalgia as a crutch, rather than looking at trying to push the story and characters forward like they used to. And given that Frontiers sees us taking another trip through Sonic's memories, for the third time now - when will it stop!? - it makes me wonder if we'll ever see a game that can stand confidently on its own two feet with brand new levels from start to finish, rather than Green Hill and Chemical Plant for the billionth time.

    Finally someone who actually can see that Star Fox Assault is a fun game. Not perfect since controls on the ground are kinda janky and yeah. Some of he voice acting is odd and at times somewhat emotionless so the voice actors might have been rushed possibly. Well they could have made the characters a bit more deep yes but the story is actually interesting. It is not another Remake or Remaster or Reimagined of Star Fox 64. Yes Star Fox 64 is a good game but they really need to actually make a new Star Fox with a new story. Star Fox Adventures I can understand why not many fans like the game but I do love Star Fox Adventures as well despite the flaws that game has as well. Star Fox Assault at the very is the only game that has nothing to do with Andross as he actually stays dead in that game. I have no idea about Star Fox Command I was for a time interested in playing it but after hearing that the story is a real mess and the multiple endings are just confusing or make no sense I lost interest in trying to play that game entirely. Plus I heard that it is most likely not considered canon anyways. Star Fox Zero I never played cause it is just another remake of Star Fox 64 pretty much which is disappointing as we really need an actual new Star Fox that is not a rehash of Star Fox 64. I mean Star Fox Assault shows it is possible. So far no new Star Fox game has no signs of being made but hopefully it won't be another remake. It started out as a multiplayer action game project, but ended up getting a full single-player story mode in addition, and ironically enough ended up a bit underwhelming on both fronts. The multiplayer had solid ideas: a third-person arena shooter with power weapons and complex map design, a more free-form predecessor to Splatoon without territory control, but the execution was janky. Too fast character movements for the limitations of the GameCube Controller's C-Stick to aim with, virtually unusable grenades that bounced unpredictably and took too long to detonate, massively unbalanced weapons and characters (virtually no justification to pick poor Slippy with him being slower than everyone else and not having Peppy's ridiculous shot charging speed to compensate for inability to reach power weapons first), WOLF-FREAKIN'-O'DONNELL being the only viable choice if anyone picked him, strangely absurd arcade elements shoehorned in like post-hit invulnerability if shot by a power weapon, including charged shot blasts, rocket launchers, even sniper rifles.
    The story mode dropped a lot of the gameplay features that had defined the series: multiple paths of differing difficulties and was not balanced separately for single-player enjoyment. Arwing lasers firing slowly in the multiplayer mode were fine, but not in the intense on-rails missions of the story mode where you're supposed to be gunning down hostile alien ships by the hundreds. Likewise the arwings handled the way the Blue Marine did from SF 64: sluggish, with too much inertia.
    Even the music, while nice to hear played by a full orchestra, was too slow for its own good. Even slightly speeding it up in post-production to match the original tempo of the tracks from the earlier games would have worked, but they didn't do that.

      I think you hit the nail on the head with this comment, Assault had some really fantastic ideas with slightly lacking execution some places. It took the story in a new direction and tried something different with its gameplay, but like you said, it was slightly let down by a handful of nagging issues. A remake to iron out some of the original's problems would be great to see, or preferably, a new game that takes what was great about Assault and polishes it to a sheen.

    In many ways I feel assault is the best of the series, or at least could have been. Really its biggest flaw was that it felt too small and linear. with Only ten missions, the split between pure rail shooter and ground missions felt a bit uneven.
    But the new and interesting story was good, the direction of the characters was great, the attempt to incorporate ground missions i feel was a genuinely good idea that just needed to be fleshed out more, and the story just needed to be longer to account for the lack of divergent paths like 64, something to really make this feel like a grand space story. It could've genuinely been a step towards perfecting the future of the series had it been built up more and not dropped.

      I couldn't agree more, this game had such potential! I feel like the short campaign was a by-product of the game being originally intended to purely be a multiplayer experience. The really cool part of the game was ironically the multiplayer. That's where the weapons, the map layouts, the freedom with the vehicles and more really comes together to make something special.

    Star Fox was one of my favorites franchise from Nintendo, it could be a golden opportunity for them to try something new instead of just giving them another game, why not give them their own show or maybe new comics, they could try to make it a little bit like Sonic the hedgehog of expanding their franchise of having more new characters, new worlds to explore, improving their characters designs, personality, give them their own origins, as well as giving them character development as the story goes on, and rewrite the story like in Star Fox Adventures. I wouldn't make Krystal be a damsel in distress when she was trapped in a magic crystal until Fox saves her at the end of the game, I was thinking to make her the main character in the story when she meets Fox for the first time, but she didn't like him at first because he was a stranger on her second home planet and tried to kill him because of misunderstanding, then they work things out, and decided to work together to accomplish their goals while also getting to know each other more. Star Fox is basically a mash-up of every known Sci-Fi film and shows that's ever been made, why can Nintendo expand on their franchise instead of focusing on Mario, Link, Pokemon, and Smash Bros out of every other franchise Nintendo has created over the years?

    • @shcdemolisher

      Sadly there is a creative mandate from the heads of Nintendo, Miyamoto, that is strangling any good potential games from being made.
