I just recently got the opportunity to meet him and took a picture with him and got some stuff signed. not only is he a great performer, but a very nice person as well.
Some of the trombone players from my school and I got the opportunity to attend a recital by none other than Mr. Alessi. As if I need to say, It was the best trombone playing I have ever heard.
I had the privilege of seeing Joe perform live a few nights ago. A simply stunning performance. Not only is he an incredible player, but he is also a great guy. After the performance, he stuck around in the lobby of the theater for two hours to sign autographs and talk to all of his fans. Truly an amazing musician.
Just gets faster and faster and then eventually immortal speed and then it surpassed immortal speed into a speed so frigging fast, it wouldn't even exist in our universe and the very last time, it rips spacetime completely.
Joe generates a superabundance of overtones throughout the entire range of the trombone. That's why his tone is so rich, and his high register notes are so full. I really question if most pupils can learn to generate those terrific overtones like Joe. More likely it's a matter of anatomy and physiology...plus practice, practice, practice, of course.
william higgins If he had a superabundance of overtones, he would be extremely bright sounding (brassy). He has a very balanced level of overtones... This is why it sounds warm, not stale or bright. The last few notes of this recording have a lot of overtones, but still not a superabundance.
+BassTrombone95 Add a baritone horn player [me] to the list of admirers. My music teacher - [a trombonist, but nobodys perfect ] rates Joe Alessi as the finest living exponent of the instrument.
I just don't know why nobody in Scotland ever chose this song as the national anthem. It can be played either solemnly or soothing, playful or respected, energetic or dignified. And it's simple lyric is much better than "Flowers of Scotland" for an independent country.
I'm confused, is that what a trombone is supposed to sound like? Why is he playing a trombone then? Regardless, I love his playing. Sincerely, a rhetorical questioner.
Yes, for solo playing it's a very good sound. French horn is a much different instrument, and is very hard because of the very small mouthpiece (compared to the very large trombone mouthpiece).
Currently in the summer of my 9th grade year (going into 10th). I've had this piece for about a month and have been working on it. I have most of the rhythms and notes down and will work on perfecting it for the next 2 years and hopefully get the Senior solo at my school with this piece.
I've listened to several great virtuosi play this Arthur Pryor classic, including Arthur Pryor himself recorded with Sousa's Band, April 15, 1901 (Crysta Records CD451), but Joe's is just the most brilliant and exuberant of the lot. You can sense that he's having fun playing it.
Wow I love the people attempting to point out stuff wrong with this just to make them feel better about themselves. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this.
Jerald Shynett, the Trombone professor at UNC Wilmington, performed this during their wind symphony concert for the UNCW Honors Band. It was amazing, and all us trombone players died a little knowing we had been bested.
man i play the mandolin, violin, guitar, percussion, ukulele, a little piano, and trombone even after years of playing instruments and after 5 years on trombone i still am 100 levels of awesomeness below this dude.
To speed up your double and triple tounguing practice it slowly. Take a metronome and put it on a slow tempo and just play a minute straight of the same articulation on an F. Eventually you can raise the tempo more and more until you're an articulating master. For extra help practice just the off-beat of you double or triple tounguing. For example if when you double toungue you do the du-gu method practice just the gu. Since that's the weaker articulation.
Pryor went real quiet after this man was born As a trombonist myself (who is working on this piece) this is the most influential playing of this I’ve ever heard)
george williams and i are probably the biggest fans of joseph in the world , we are 15 year old trombonists at robertsdale high school . george just 4 weeks ago went to talahasee florida to have a 3 hour lesson from joseph and he came back with a changed atitude , he said that hearing joe play made him allmost want to quit hearing how good he was and how far he has to go before hes that good and george is allready well past a college skill level he can play the malcom fantasy allmost perfectly
It is so hard to get to this level in anything artistic because there are so many factors behind it, though ultimately it comes down to well being and how connected you are to the music
This is an incredible performance. And to be honest as a tuba player I also happen to like the little descending tuba arpeggio when the full band plays, so this is a win-win for me.
I've been playing the t-bone for YEARS h.s., college and now community band and have been exposed to all calibers of players. The guy who sits next to me in the community band has a bachelor's degree in trombone performance and can't touch this guy. He's truly a virtuoso.
A very fine performance as you'd expect from an artist on the top of his game. However my favourite ever recording of this work is one that Ronald Barron recorded around 1975 with piano accompaniment (he was principal with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the time). If anyone can post that recording I'd be grateful!
So, opinions: Is Joe the greatest trombonist EVER? I heard his teacher, Glenn Dodson (former principal, Philadelphia Orchestra), a number of times, and I honestly can't say who's better. Both absolutely unbelievable sounds!
Must be great to literally be the best in the world at something.
Best in the world is subjective. Without doubt remarkable playing but others can claim to be as good ( Ian Bousfield for example)
Maybe in terms of musicality, but definitely not in respect to their technical abilities. alessi is far superior in that regard
No such thing as best in the world re:Music.
I would say bob mcchesney is on his level
I'm pretty sure Wycliffe Gordon is just as good or better.
I like how the last picture is like him saying, "Yeah... hear that? I did that shit."
I think this is like a trombone's fantasy dream to be able to play at this level, that you would never want to wake up from.... ever!!!!
So true
Who here would like to shake hands with this guy
Your hand would fall off with the vivacity of the shake.
My friend got to take a picture with the man and had the opportunity to play the accompaniment for this song.
Jason Creeper I shook hands with him and to be honest it just felt like a normal 60 yr old’s hand
I just recently got the opportunity to meet him and took a picture with him and got some stuff signed. not only is he a great performer, but a very nice person as well.
Michael Hesseltine Jr oh rlly? To be honest he was a dick to me lmao
When I practice this for solo and ensemble, I think Im doing pretty good.
Then I listen to this recording and give up on my hopes and dreams.
+iDwayneXD Literally me
😩

Truly an amazing musician.
the clarity and definition he plays with..... amazing
Sei il migliore💯
That high F at the end...
Makes me want to quit playing trombone and somehow at the same time also makes me want to practice trombone more.
+Masayuki Fujita I know how you feel!
It makes you look horrible by comparison, but also motivates you to get to that level. Been there many times.
Well think, every great trombonist was once just as good as you were!
We must start a religion in honor of Joe Alessi.
*cough cough* well.. actually I'm better than jOseph aleSsi. sO, umm.
just kidding I'm nowhere near this good
Just gets faster and faster and then eventually immortal speed and then it surpassed immortal speed into a speed so frigging fast, it wouldn't even exist in our universe and the very last time, it rips spacetime completely.

Ludicrous speed!
@@-hiphopanonymous-7093 You beat me to it!
Talk about a song that is simply humbling to listen to. What a performance.

33 euphonium players disliked this! Eh but seriously jokes aside, this is absolutely incredible. That tone is unbelievable.
Haha I was joking, no worries! I used to play euphonium myself and love the instrument!
+BassTrombone95 Add a baritone horn player [me] to the list of admirers. My music teacher - [a trombonist, but nobodys perfect ] rates Joe Alessi as the finest living exponent of the instrument.
Wish I could play trombone sometimes but I love the good ol euphonium
This solo is Also for euphonium
HEY. I fucking LOVE THIS.
It's incredibly refreshing to see two people settle their differences nicely like this on the internet. Thank you :]
It's not impossible. Alessi's doing it.
Noting inspires me more to keep trying than the knowledge that someone has already done it.
He was probably sight reading this while standing on his head
This is incredible!!!!!!! I thought tone like his was impossible until I heard this.
Have heard this played many times over the past forty years but this is simply the Best
Mr. Alessi is simply amazing.
I just don't know why nobody in Scotland ever chose this song as the national anthem. It can be played either solemnly or soothing, playful or respected, energetic or dignified. And it's simple lyric is much better than "Flowers of Scotland" for an independent country.
How would anyone sing along with this? XD
Jakewh97 Actually, Blue Bells of Scotland was originally a folk song usually sang in the weddings in Highlands.
@@Schinshikss I'd be funny if they ironically chose the trombone version as the national anthem.
No it isn't
Other fast playing brass players are pretty good, but being able to play this fast on a TROMBONE out of all things is just downright impressive.
Holy. This is the best recording I've ever heard, by any instrument. Absolutely incredible.
Seriously, he's so good that in some parts he has the tone quality of a good french horn player.
+Garrett Brothers Some parts, pshh. It's. The. Whole. Freaking. Dang. Thing.

That high F - Clear as Glass. what a performer
How about that high G though? That’s actually more impressive despite it being a lot shorter.
Im still hearing this piece since this video had 10000 views and i still love it!!
This is how the trombone should sound , so beautiful !!!!!!!
Haha I play trombone, my dream is to sound like that.
+Drake Bradford Same here
Just don't give up and practise ;) I am in the same situation here
man i play the mandolin, violin, guitar, percussion, ukulele, a little piano, and trombone even after years of playing instruments and after 5 years on trombone i still am 100 levels of awesomeness below this dude.
I don't want to play LIKE him, I want to play BETTER than him. So much in fact that I want to make deaf people cum with how amazing I am.
Just dont ever use your tonque and make sure you lean back a little to accsess more diaphram thats all he does
You can say that again. Simply amazing!

Listening to this gave me blue balls.
TemporaryDepression Blue balls of Scotland
Outstanding performance.
I like how at 5:40 you can tell by Joe's playing that he's thinking "Cmon conductor, keep up!"
It's stupid how perfectly he hit that High F at the end

Being a Bass Trombone I can safely say I can "totally" do this with my eyes closed (I am kidding by the way)
Fantastic trombone playing.!
HE IS LEGENDS..
If I could like this a thousand times, I would sir (or madame)

Brass onions and total respect and admiration.
There are other recordings with comparable technique but I appreciate the interpretation he brings to the piece -- really special!!
he truly is the best orchestral trombonist out there. and tied for the best soloist with lindberg.
Wonderful playing Joe!
INCREDIBLE!
hey, he's got a horn just like mine! they sound a little different though...
He is the best.
Joseph ist der beste klassische Posaunist der Welt!
natürlich. So wunderschön
Playing this on Saturday for State Solo and Ensemble. Maybe if I listen to Alessi enough I can sound like him too.
Great Trombonist!
I just saw him do this today at Castleton Festival. Unreal.
i like this i csn hear this all day
This guy is ten steps ahead, and no other trombonist has figured out what game he’s playing.

This is one of the songs I would love to be able to play. Of course, the main problem is that it is IMPOSSIBLE.
I'm very familiar with Lindberg and Bousfield's renditions, so it's nice to have Alessi's to compare.
