I owned so many bikes as a kid through teenage years and seeing the dunk brings back so much! I completely built a dyno from the top to bottom as a teenager with the best of the best because of my summer job, everything I made went to my bike. Unfortunately weed and drinking got in my way and after a few years I sold it for a hundred dollars and was involved in illegal activities. I wish to this day I would have kept it for my son, I was so proud and spent so much time and energy while riding my hardest, and investing everything unfortunately my thoughts lost there focus
Dude that kind sucks. I smoke weed and drink. And that doesn't get in the way of me riding I would of never sold it let alone for a hundred. Sounds like you had a addiction.
The 87 Dyno Detour was the mid-level bike and had a full 4130 frame and fork. The Comp was tri-moly. In 88, Dyno changed the name to D-Tour and it was tri-moly.
Man my brother here knows his history on these classic ass bikes spotting the imperfections just goes to show you the love for the bikes that was to die for lessons baby blowing my mind how he see it gotta love it you can’t duplicate the feeling of our era it was to pure that’s still alive
Worked all summer in 85 to buy a new Maui blue Dyno Compe, by the end of the next winter I had it decked out with all the matching blue Odyssey components including the all new Gyro, Shimano pedals and Skyway Tuff lls. my buddy had the neon orange frame and fork, that I believe was one year only, before the Detour existed.
I had a dyno vfr when I was a kid, I put aftermarket bars, pedals, seat, and cranks, my dad put a custom paint job on it, it was beautiful, gum wall tires too
Man this brings me back! My baby growing up was an orange Dyno Nitro (probably 1992-1993). I had that thing fitted with purple lizard skins and constantly changing it up and modding it. Like I said, man this brings me back to the god ol days!
I came through because that bike lit me up like 1986!!! Every time I see one of those florescent bikes of the past it's 1 of those bikes I've always wanted and I never got because my dad was a cheap skate kept his $80000 salary and bought me a huffy. I never got to experience what it's like as a kid to be able to know what it's like to do real tricks with a real bike. I always told my dad man you make it extremely difficult buying a bike that's engineered just to make a profit and nothing designed for performance. I'm still collecting bikes. I hang them on my wall. As I get older I seem to be a collector. I just want to own everything in the world and just stare at it. I want to ride that bike so bad even though I am 6' 2. Today I can do all the stunts that I dreamt to do as a child. I didn't get to learn them until I was like 35. But I can do them and I can Bunny hop over 4' With a nice curb. I just really love the extreme forward design and style of these bikes they are forever!! They are such physical symbols of time. They were the lamborghini and ferraris for us kids in the eighties. There was always a kid that had one of these ferraris and I was never about GTA. I kept my hands to myself.
I owned a powder coating company for years. I hope no one was grinding it down to prep any piece for paint hah. I would sandblast/mediablast it to remove the previous paint and then run over the piece with some sand paper to smooth out the surface imperfections from the blasting. with that said, if the stamp is light enough between sandblasting and coating with the new paint the stamp may become less defined. If you skip the blasting you will have to strip the paint and then hand sand the piece but you're guaranteed more issues with longevity of the paint job as the paint doesn't grip well to smooth surface. So unless someone getting the piece redone stated they wanted the stamp to be visible we never worried about it and instead focused on making sure the customer got a lasting job.
I'm glad I still have my custom built Haro FST with peregrine masters. It currently has all 1987 original GT parts from tires, 2pc solid crank, folding fork stands, rear platforms, laid back seat post, grips, neck. I can't recall what chain and handle bars I have on it. I would love to get it powder coated the same color and rebuild it.
I had a set of green Peregrine masters on my blue 87 GT performer frame with Crome Mongoose forks, Crome Dyno neck, Crome GT handlebars, Crome GT layback seat post and odyssey seat clamp with odyssey brakes. This was in 1994 and I had a paper route back then. I miss those days. I sold it like an idiot in 1997 because my CR125R needed parts.
Had a gorgeous detour in the 80’s painted blue. Loved it. Though, I was always secretly envious of my friends Pro Comp model. Seemed just a bit smoother than my Detour
Growing up, my buddy used to get brand new dynos like every two years. He was a big boy and would always fold the drainpipes backward. But everywhere you said there should be a "D" stamp, you are absolutely correct. But i remember that also maybe that sticker set color, shoulda been on the darker blue colored detour. I was like 14 so i can barely remember. And hescorrect about the mags too, and later on they looked like the ones hes took off the wall, and they had little gt's in ink printed in the corners where the mag spoke meets the rim. Although my buddy always had spokes, cause he would noodle the mags. And mags always sucked for stopping and were a million pounds. I had a pair of baby blue tuff 2's brand new and took em off after a week. My best gt ownership was a chrome pro performer frame and fork. We had alot of these old bikes between me and my friends. I also had the period correct to this bike, factory, bought seperately, gt power 3 piece cranks, with huge aluminum arms, and a shaft that would creak no matter how tight. Pro line flights it was. Badddest crank set ever made until the new profile style everyone uses now.
I had a Dyno comp back at the end of the 90'S, it was second hand from my cousin, the bike was black with crome handlebar and fork, and the cable sleeves where all neon pink,, i loved this bike so much ,,i wonder if it still in use....
Back in the 90s I had a Dyno Nitro bright green super light for street racing and a black and red Dyno Air for the tricks. Loved Dynos and GTs back then.
Yeah me too had It's six old school Schwinn Schwinn BMX bikes I had Royce Union three of them I had the GT that looks like the Dino frame I had the dinocomp I had the Dino VFR I had about 25 BMX bikes throughout Dino GT Royce Union Schwinn diamondback And the list goes on I feel you I'd be a millionaire too
I went through so many freestyle and bmx bikes. GT Performer, Dyno pro comp, Dyno comp, multiple mongoose (pre Walmart crap bikes), redline, Hoffman sugar baby...list goes on lol.
If only I kept and took care of all the 80’s bmx bikes I had when I competed as a kid. Original Haro freestyle, SE quadangle, GT performer, Hutch prostar.
Turn it over & run the serial numbers . It should be on the bottom of the crank bracket . I think that’s the only way you could really tell if it’s a Comp , Detour or Pro Comp . My friend back in the day had a DYNO Detour & this looks the part but who knows . It’s sad that people don’t take the time to really put these mid school bikes back the way they were , all original . I can see if someone customize their mid school bike to replace factory parts with stronger more high grade parts like me & my friends did back in the day such as rims , seats , grips , break systems , chains , sprockets back wheel & main , pegs too also tires. I ran with Haros & I still have all of mine , I run all the same parts on each of them the only difference is the frame & forks & all of them are different beast l they respond differently to different scenarios of riding & I wouldn’t trade any of them for the world . I’m 49 years of age & I still ride just like I did when I was a kid . You could say I never stopped riding & you should see the look on kids faces when I’m at the local skateparks wile riding a mid school bike doing new school tricks , it’s mind blowing to them & there are some tricks people can’t do with these newer bikes because of their frame & fork dimensions & they don’t make bikes out of 4130 Chrome Molly anymore so I have the best of both worlds wile riding .
Ive been trying to get my dad to fix up his 83 kuwahara thats got all original gold suntour gear still on it. Not sure what model it is but its black frame.
But they didn't break! Those things got punished back in the day, every other part would die or explode but the frame always stood strong, plus they looked bad ass! 😂
I had a newer gt dyno with the 3 star mags and gyro, pittbull brakes back around 2003ish.. It was probably not 10 years olds and perfect.. I think I picked it up for like 40 bucks or something.. I wasn't that much into biking at that point but I rode it a little ... It was nice but I liked the late 80's early 90's ones better.. to me that was the bike I always wanted growing up back then.. It basically was the same but newer and it was freaking heavy.. I think a gt looks good with the 5 star skyway mags.. The 3 star, I was not a big fan of.. But it was original.. I moved and ended up giving the bike away to someone that sold it for like 20 bucks at a sale.. I was kinda bummed that they didn't give it to someone in the family that would appreciate it but whatever now.. Long gone perfect Gt Dyno performer style..Someone was probably happy to get it.. The bikes I had in the 90's would be worth a fortune now.. A small fortune at least..lol..
I used to race BMX as a youngster. Started with a Dyno VFR. Graduated to a Specialized FatBoy A-1 pro, which I still have today. I'd love to see a video on it...
Awesome bike had a few back in the day , still have my GT 24in cruiser 94 thx for the video, would love to see a video of the older bmx bikes in your shop 👍
That is the same type bike that I saved and saved for then had to travel to Frankford BMX a state away from Ohio to go and purchase it.Loved that freestyle bike. When I sit and think about it, I have no idea what ever happened to that bike. The one I had was blue with white gyro, seat and mags.
Man, the longer I watch this video the more things I spot things dotted around this guys workshop that I'd love to have a nosey at. Aladdin's cave comes to mind !
The reason this old school Dyno has after market parts it’s bc even survivor parts for this OG frame is ridiculously pricey now. I own a couple of Old school GTs and putting them era correct is not cheap. Btw nice Dyno 👍👍
I owned the 86' Comp and the difference between the two are the wheels. The comp came stock with spokes and could be upgraded to mags, which most of us did. And the brake pads were better quality on the tour, but that's about it for differences!
Beautiful bike, definitely tastefully done! I'm the proud owner of a 1992 Dyno Compe fingerprint edition! Navy blue and white, with the super light lavender color steel wheels. I purchased it from a guy in PA! Great bikes.
Just discovered these old bike vids. I had a bad ass custom pk ripper that i races ABA races in the north west. If my memory is correct it had bullseye hubs and skinny wheels,. Shit this brings back memories.
The detour frame is different... the seat tube triangle is different... the frame standers on the seat tube on the detour go past the seat tube.. the pro comp don't... LOVE ❤️ WHAT YOU'RE DOUNG BROTHER !! I'm old school too .. used to ride for Auburn.,Profile back in the day... would love to cut it up with you...lol
Had one of these back in the day! Bunny hopped the shit out of it. When I was 14 I "loaned" it to a friend. I guess he's still riding it....to this very day! Great video.
One thing a young guy learned was to never let his freestyle bike out of his sight back then. Till this day, I take my current bike in the store with me. It's a bit customized, and gets plenty attention. If I can't bring it in, I flip it upside down, plus disengage the free coaster. I'm in and out that store quick as greased lighting too 🤓👍🏽! I forgot to mention that I sometimes loosen up the hex key bolts on the stem. It's one of the modernized GT mallet stems.
@@rgw1380rw happened to me, left my Haro with my best friends dad for literally 3 minutes or so and lost sight of the bike forever. 35 years later and it still hurts
Hi Alfredo. A friend had his 87 compe chromed about a week after he bought it even though we wanted him to keep it in lavender/purple. The chroming process was compromised leaving pitted chrome all over the frame. It was ruined. Compe was mild steel, maybe trimoly.
Very cool guy. He knows his stuff. It would be so fun to be surrounded by and work with these bikes. I used to ride and build in the 80s. Those rattles used to drive me crazy. I always preferred the riding to the building! On the subject of Dyno bikes, there was one chained up and rusted to hell for over 10 years outside a ramen shop near me in Tokyo. I wanted to cut that thing free but I guessed it might have been the shop owner's. Then one day it was gone. It was probably almost 30 years old. All original as far as I could tell.
They also had a vfr dyno that i had in high-school when I raced bmx. Also had a power-lite, mongoose before they went cheap. My favorite was my gt fueler with spin 3 spoke carbon fiber wheels mohawk hubs black widow crank s&m seat and post with terrible one bars. Man those were the days.
Had a dyno (cant remember if Dtour or DeTour) but in blue/white. Had white gt mags/tires but straight not sloped. Same gt stem. Gt seat post clamp. Odyssey brakes. No brake lock. Cheese grater. Loved it but wish i never sold it decades ago. Might have to get my hands on one again. Anyone know the year mine was? Awesome channel bro. Your funny and cool as F
Cool Store... Reminds me of our Old Shop(Motorcycle Dirt Bikes). Sill Have It. Since 1973. Great Info on the bike. Like how you go into detail to what to look for. I go to Garage Sales will be on the look at for Parts.
That GT stem is a 90s repop because of the rotor hole drilled through the top of the stem, the original 80s stems didn't have the hole. And you are correct, the original 80s were stamped SR SAKAE, and those bars, I don't believe that all original Dyno bars had the 'D' stamp.
This was an amazing video! Love the old school Dyno! I’ve been patiently waiting for another Phu video and I’m glad to have seen this one. Nice to have you back at EPIC and I appreciate the video bro!
I saw the employees at Epic cut titanium spokes instead of unlacing when they were replacing a rim. They were pretty mad at themselves when they realized what they’d done.
It was possible to actually develop a nice patina on the original painted freestyle frames back then, from where your feet would hit during flatland tricks. Usually, the worn areas would show up on the top tube, and near the dropouts, if you had pegs. You felt accomplished when your frame started wearing to bare metal. Seems like Mongoose blue (FS1?), and that mintlike green on the Decade really were easy to wear through.
Man, I miss riding my BMX/flat land bikes. I Still have my old flat land HARO shredder down at my grandmas...I have a dyno down there as well, can't remember the model though. When I moved onto BMX, I got more into power lite bikes. Powerlite p28 was one of my favorite bikes ever.
I remember when I was a teen I bought a Dyno that had a suspension fork and it was one of the first that I ever saw. You could get a nice bike for $200-250 usually back then. GT and Dyno was ok but usually a little heavy.
Looks like plenty of modern parts. Originally had Odyssey seat clamp or GT. Depends on how early/ late they were. Would have Odyssey FS 2000 brakes, not Nippons, and different levers. The stem would NOT have been a GT mallet stem. Would've been a more ACS looking stem. Mags would've been OGK GT performer mags. Not all pretzel bars were stamped but those look like repops. Grips would be AME rounds, not tri's. Sprocket would've been a white GT stamped "cheese grater". Original pedals were composite material. Tires are repops too. Those newer decals are less transpartent than originals. You'd be able to see the dayglo slightly bleeding through. Great vid man!
I had an '87, maybe '88 dark blue D-tour. I bought it brand new from Bicycle Source on Western Ave in Harbor City, CA. The complete bike was $269ish I want to say. I really wanted a GT Pro Freestyle Tour or RL 20II, but these were the Porsches, Ferrari's, Lambo's of freestyle bikes. I got the Camaro SS of freestyle bikes. This or the Mongoose Decade was my budget.
The Dtour cme with Odyssey seat clamps. The Dtours dont bring stamped pretzel bars and they are steel and weight about 2.6 pounds(yes i weighed them). The stamped pretzel bars (Pro Comp)have the stamp on the ends where the grip goes and had a D and cro-mo on it and are 1.14 pounds. The headtube decal and the seat tube decal are swapped btw.

Dude totally feel ya. I had GTs S&M Haro's etc etc. Nowadays b worth 20k+ easy. Shit happens. Respect 🙏
sounds likeyou grew up in fresno! ha jk
Live and learn, we all have our regrets.
I have an all original Dyno in chrome with the original stickers. Complete!
The 87 Dyno Detour was the mid-level bike and had a full 4130 frame and fork. The Comp was tri-moly. In 88, Dyno changed the name to D-Tour and it was tri-moly.
Wasn't the orange a gt color and not on Dyno? I can't remember. Been too long ago
@@slaytanic777 very good memory recall. I think the Detour was available in blue, purple, red, black, white, and chrome.
@@ericstahl9403 that sounds about right. Earlier than that I think was just white black and chrome.
We always joked that the Dynos were tri-moly because they were "tri-ing" to be as good as the GT's lol
@@slaytanic777 They did make Dynos in orange. My brother got one in the mid 80s when we were kids and he still has it.
Man my brother here knows his history on these classic ass bikes spotting the imperfections just goes to show you the love for the bikes that was to die for lessons baby blowing my mind how he see it gotta love it you can’t duplicate the feeling of our era it was to pure that’s still alive
No blacks rode bmx foh
Worked all summer in 85 to buy a new Maui blue Dyno Compe, by the end of the next winter I had it decked out with all the matching blue Odyssey components including the all new Gyro, Shimano pedals and Skyway Tuff lls. my buddy had the neon orange frame and fork, that I believe was one year only, before the Detour existed.
I know that feeling all too well! No better prize at the end of the hard work!
I had a dyno vfr when I was a kid, I put aftermarket bars, pedals, seat, and cranks, my dad put a custom paint job on it, it was beautiful, gum wall tires too
That bike is sick. Brings back memories from the late 80's.
I kept my hands to myself.
dude you wish you could bunny hop 4'. good one
I had a Detour as a kid and to this day was the coolest thing ever! Some real fun summers on that puppy!
Trust me we were looking through the bike very thoroughly to see any indentations of the D
Fake or not, that orange/white combo is godly.
It's amazing how far BMX has come! If I still had all my old bikes and parts, I'd be rich!
Yeah me too had It's six old school Schwinn Schwinn BMX bikes I had Royce Union three of them I had the GT that looks like the Dino frame I had the dinocomp I had the Dino VFR I had about 25 BMX bikes throughout Dino GT Royce Union Schwinn diamondback And the list goes on I feel you I'd be a millionaire too
I would be rich if I only had my three old hutch's
you said it Dude, I had Gts, old school Mongooses
I went through so many freestyle and bmx bikes. GT Performer, Dyno pro comp, Dyno comp, multiple mongoose (pre Walmart crap bikes), redline, Hoffman sugar baby...list goes on lol.
I had a detour. Looked like the coolest thing ever. It was extremely heavy, clunky and half way thru the summer the crank snapped.
Hahaha sound accurate, yet lovely
If only I kept and took care of all the 80’s bmx bikes I had when I competed as a kid. Original Haro freestyle, SE quadangle, GT performer, Hutch prostar.
Amen

They don't make bikes out of 4130 anymore???
I'm 43 when I was 14 I had a GT performer and GT freestyle also a redline. Loved those days.
Those bikes were pretty heavy. Neat to see people saving them.
My cousin had a GT Performer in like 1993. That thing weighed like 30 lbs. it was a tank
But they didn't break! Those things got punished back in the day, every other part would die or explode but the frame always stood strong, plus they looked bad ass! 😂
@@xn-triq7607 I got a stack of bikes between my friend and I
@@xn-triq7607 I liked the mag wheels because everything else got trashed thrashing the trails...
I still have my 1987 Kuwahara Magician EX(yellow) from my childhood. I'd like to rehome it to a true vintage BMX bike collector someday.
I had the same Magician EX , had it until about 1999. Wish I kept it.
Good to see you back in Phu's store!
Awesome bike had a few back in the day , still have my GT 24in cruiser 94 thx for the video, would love to see a video of the older bmx bikes in your shop 👍
Let’s not forget the Dyno VFR!!!!
Daaamn this is RAD. Your visit to this shop and the vibes there are the best
Still hot my original DYNO COMP with surf bar! Damn now I want to paint it.... again 😎😎
Redline and GT will forever be my favorite of the 80’s and early 90’s.
That is the same type bike that I saved and saved for then had to travel to Frankford BMX a state away from Ohio to go and purchase it.Loved that freestyle bike. When I sit and think about it, I have no idea what ever happened to that bike. The one I had was blue with white gyro, seat and mags.
You probably traded it for weed or a bucket
Dude was righteous! Click bait title though. I thought there was gonna be an actual confrontation.
I remember having a Dyno frame, redline crank, mongoose wheels... "Hey who missing a bike...? I dunno maybe look in the duck pond..."! Lol
Phu.. Your videos are great! I can learn a lot from these! Keep it up!
🙌
Man, the longer I watch this video the more things I spot things dotted around this guys workshop that I'd love to have a nosey at. Aladdin's cave comes to mind !
The reason this old school Dyno has after market parts it’s bc even survivor parts for this OG frame is ridiculously pricey now. I own a couple of Old school GTs and putting them era correct is not cheap. Btw nice Dyno 👍👍
Great video ! Great oldschool bike to ! Good to see you guys are all well and back to normality
I owned the 86' Comp and the difference between the two are the wheels. The comp came stock with spokes and could be upgraded to mags, which most of us did. And the brake pads were better quality on the tour, but that's about it for differences!
love the oldschool stuff i lusted after a blue Dyno in a local store for a loooong time
Beautiful bike, definitely tastefully done! I'm the proud owner of a 1992 Dyno Compe fingerprint edition! Navy blue and white, with the super light lavender color steel wheels. I purchased it from a guy in PA! Great bikes.
That was my childhood bike! Jealous for sure..the good Ole days

Best comment ever.
Legendary forsure bud
One thing a young guy learned was to never let his freestyle bike out of his sight back then. Till this day, I take my current bike in the store with me. It's a bit customized, and gets plenty attention. If I can't bring it in, I flip it upside down, plus disengage the free coaster. I'm in and out that store quick as greased lighting too 🤓👍🏽!
I forgot to mention that I sometimes loosen up the hex key bolts on the stem. It's one of the modernized GT mallet stems.
💯
@@rgw1380rw happened to me, left my Haro with my best friends dad for literally 3 minutes or so and lost sight of the bike forever. 35 years later and it still hurts

I got 87 Gt Performer, 86 Mongoose FS1 a 1 year bike and 87 Mongoose Expert. Love my Old school Bikes!
Hi Alfredo. A friend had his 87 compe chromed about a week after he bought it even though we wanted him to keep it in lavender/purple. The chroming process was compromised leaving pitted chrome all over the frame. It was ruined. Compe was mild steel, maybe trimoly.
I still have my blue 1987 Dyno Detour. My dad bought it new for me for Christmas. He got it at Love's Bike Shop in Beaumont, California.
My Dyno Comp had a baby blue color. That was around 1985. I think it was powder coated, but that was soooo long ago that I don't remember.
Very cool looking DYNO with tons of new repop parts but nicely done
Just makes me regret stripping down my old Schwinn Predator Freestyle when I was a kid.
The Dyno was a cheaper GT I always thought. I had a hutch and a red line when I was a kid. I always went for the lighter bikes.
Hutch was the best. The ultimate.
Glad to see alfredo getting into old school bmx bikes which were better looking. I'm old school bmx I wish i had this bike back then.
I love all bikes, I definitely will ride modern bikes for strength and weight when BMXing, but cruise the older ones when I can!

Great episode of Antiques Roadshow starring Mr Phu.
Wow this just brought back memories! You had to have a GT performer or Dyno or you didnt have nothing!
A great enthusiast, I like how he never dis the bike
I have an 82 GT with Dyno bars and gyro. Miss those days
Nice job explaining all the details. Would love a similar video on a GT mach 1 😊
I loved my Dino bike as a child. Still have it in my closet collecting dust.
I love people that don't know about old-school bikes.
1985 Pro comp came like that with those bars and the brakes the way that one is.
Damn, you are a BMX Professor. Impressive.
Bad ass! I had the same year GT pro performer blue n white looked almost identical to this dyno! Old days 13yrs old 😂

I saw the employees at Epic cut titanium spokes instead of unlacing when they were replacing a rim. They were pretty mad at themselves when they realized what they’d done.
You can’t beat this guy when it comes to bmx knowledge he knows it all even when you were in your moms womb
My cranks used to get that all the time!
These ultra low end bmx bikes being so sought after now blows my mind.
Yup dyno was like a huffy back then.
It is what most kids/parents could add back then…so it’s what most people remember owning and now they want it back!!!
Finally back with the boys
Dassss righttttt
Flipping Sheepy Race is THE Bomb! So are you Phu!! I thought bro was wearing wearing Sheepy threads.

I really wanted a GT Pro Freestyle Tour or RL 20II, but these were the Porsches, Ferrari's, Lambo's of freestyle bikes. I got the Camaro SS of freestyle bikes. This or the Mongoose Decade was my budget.
