Every time an Imperial air controller says "Incoming, Flight of Valkyries" the Emperor chuckles at a joke literally only he gets
XD the hymn of ww2 and vietnam 😄 love this comment
Or he ponders and thinks "hmmmm that rings a bell"
Big E chuckles and resulting energy waves disturb the Warp so much that Fulgrim soils his snakepants
Yeah it's pretty funny I think
@@aoofmg6684eh, I feel like it requires helicopters to work best, and they were first introduced in Korea.
Funny thing is I’m pretty sure the A-10’s cannon still exists in M41. The Avenger strike aircraft is pretty much the 40k A-10 because the entire aircraft is built around something called the “Avenger Bolt Cannon” which sounds like it turned the GAU-18 into a bolt weapon and I am 1000% here for it
Poor Fire Raptor. She's an actual gunship in all senses of the word.
Is the pilot sitting in a plasteel armor 'bathtub'?
@@angry_zergling it actually can be fitted with an upgrade called an “armored cockpit” which sounds very similar to the A-10’s titanium bathtub
Dude they lost text to speech ....., they don’t have a A-10
@@verilyveronica8430 I’m inclined to disagree. Text to speech was a luxury for folks who, in the Age of Strife, genetically weak and not likely to survive much. The A-10 in some form or fashion is is a tool of war that could help warlords and planets survive the myriad horrors of Old Night.
34:48 Remember in 40k Plasteel is a thing; Its light enough that as a steel alloy it can be used instead of aviation aluminium and the Chonky Leeman Russ MBT is only 60 metric tonnes (allegedly).
So a Valkyrie/Vulture/Vendetta variant's armor could be MUCH lighter than it would seem for a universal 75mm armor coverage...
True, can’t forget the material GW stole from Dune.
@@robertnelson9599 might have stole that from starwars who stole it from dune
It's a meta material aslong as it makes our vehicles cooler origins don't matter
Plasteel has been a thing since 1973 and is a composite between fiberglass and some metal..its not scifi, even if its not quite the same thing as scifi plasteel😊
@andersbjrnsen7203 there are companies doing research of it today but production of metal and plastic is cheaper than producing a meta-material so it won't be for a long time before it is common but the aero-space industry is going to love it.
Fun is having 6 Vendetta gunships slap a WARHOUND off the table turn one. Or having a Vendetta harpooned out of the sky. Using Valkyries to reenact Blackhawk Down, but with Geanstealers. There were no survivors.
14:16 I remember back in the day when Hunter-Killer Missiles and Naval Torpedoes used crude and very singleminded AI assisted guidance systems and were some of the only sanctioned uses of AI In the Imperium.
I'm fairly certain that this got retconned into "Aggressive Machine Spirits" fairly quickly...
Which is the same thing, just with semantics to keep the Mechanicus from throwing a fit.
I'm actually sceptical and feel the need for other aircraft to have some type of advanced defence against missiles, both because dogfights do seem to be what everybody can do, they'll be useful against orks but against eldar fighters use lascannons. Also the fact that space marines do drop straight on to target hence the need for the gunships to do much more than just survive, they must be able to clear the skies and seed.
The Hunter-Killer knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't.
I can't wait for "Imperial Armor! The Battleships of the Imperial Navy" and the tiny lore tidbits like the art of thousands of serfs making a giant cog turn by "walking upstairs" for hours and hours
Do the heavy landers next! Specifically the Tetrarch Heavy Landers. Been building my own for tabletop and very little information on it is readily available.
That's cool that you've taken that up as a project you should post a photo of it somewhere when you're finished with it
Or The Thunderhawk and it's sister planes.
Some times it feels like GW simply has no interest in double checking some of the nubers they put on things like the amount of waight something can lift. And then we get to have fun speculating how that could be so still a win.
An engineer would die looking at the 'aircraft' in 30/40k
It's what happens when you copy paste from google, a Leman Russ's stats are more or less exactly the same as an M1 Abrams, except the speed, which is the same if the mph was swapped for kph and makes me suspect the poor guy who had to write the whole Imperial Armour book simply made a mistake when he was copying the stats
It is odd to see them get some things spot on and other things radically ( and I might add stupidly) wrong,... Such as here, Not with the weight mind you as with the already mentioned Russ Tank, the weight of the Valkyrie and its lifting capacity is basically analogous to a Chinook helicopter.... You cant have a "surface ceiling" of 13k meters ( that's not even as high as a modern airliner) and then also say it can fly in space. Those are two contradicting things. Its like saying that a 747 usually flies around 35k feet and tops out at 45-ish thousand feet but it could go through the Karman Line ( 100 kilometers) and into space if it wanted to do so. A surface ceiling is literally that, The highest point a lifting body and its engines can reach before the air pressure around that body is reduced to the point where neither lift nor thrust can be achieved.
@Christopher Mitchell in the case of Valk's that was a later retcon, the first appearance of Valk's is in Imperial Armour 1 and its clearly described as an atmospheric only aircraft, if I remember the description it states while its able to be pressurised it lacks the engines for space maneuver. Then later on in the abomination that's the 5th edition Guard Codex it is brought into the main codex and there its described as having limited outside atmosphere operational ability and thats stuck in all later descriptions but no one went back to edit the original stats in Imperial Armour, hence it has a operational ceiling while being able to go into space
@@maddlarkin and there is my answer. I'm new to this lore , only a few months ( and only a handful of the novels) in... Thank you. I just wish that presenters would make these things more clear, I assumed a lore error as opposed to the video taking a literally verbatim approach to the material. I've noticed this several times with Arch ( like in many of the The Expanse or ASoIaF forums/Wiki) and it makes discussion more difficult. There are, in lore, reasons why and how both these things can be true, it just requires contextualization rather than just flat statements ( implications be damned)
1 idea for a video is how does an astartes become a tactical or devastator or any other type of marine? Do they choose their favourite weapon or is it chosen for them?
I know you love logistics and also what happens when a marine does something worthy of promotion but no position is available? Just questions that you have yet to cover about the coolest thing the imperium can send against their enemies.
I've always wondered that too. I know marines are typically trained to be able to use any kind of weapon in the arsenal but how do specialists become specialists?
Blood Angels go from assault first, and finish in tactical squads; in theory the most rounded squad.
Other chapters go from devastator to assault and finish in tactical.
Space Wolves keep to their starting pack and grow into assault, tactical and finally devastator/Long Fangs when they're old and experienced enough.
@@Matihood1 Codex compliant chapters have a set progression route of the branches, some who show great aptitude or later preferance become sargents for specialits squads. Non-compliant, well that depends on chapter, Space wolves being a prime example.
Buut yeah full video would be nice. Like a 100 other subjects.
@@Jaegerrants honestly, most seem to be from scout to Tactical marine, then depending on situation they use heavy weapons or as one prefers, then basically being put with people like yourself. It's I can do everything training with masters in a certain thing.
Never understood why scout is classed as the lowest rank/role. Recon is literally the most important role without reliable Intel your fucked.
I know you haven't tackle Star Wars stuff in a while, I still like to see a lore video on the Valkyrie SW equivalent, the LAATs.
"...as a special needs aircraft." so it's the short bus for Ogryn?
In the book Double Eagle by Dan Abbnet the Thunderbolts twin-linked lascannon had a capacity of about 40 shots with a full auto setting as well and it also had quad auto cannons with, if I recall correctly, about 20 seconds of firepower
This book is way too underrated imo its one of the best guard books
Well make sense, Lascannon is" hitscan" But you still need to hit so fullauto setting is a must.
A Hunter-Killer is the Imperial lingo for self-guiding munitions, specifically what we call fire-and-forget missiles.
"What's a vulture?"
This bird that was on earth 20,000 years ago
"And it looks like this plane?"
I donno
The Hunter-Killer Missile knows where it is because it knows where it isn't.
It knows where it isn't because the Omnissiah Guides it to the foe.
Do hunter-Killer missiles have a machine spirit?
Not to mention the atypical logistical nature of the munitorum, the typical supply’s would consist primarily of food, in the forms of high protein ration bars which are no larger than your typical snack bar which mostly constitutes of reprocessed human waste, which again can be stuffed into a small box, enough to sustain a platoon for weeks, whilst not weighing too much, as well as things like water and fuel which would take up a considerable amount of space and weight but that’s not forgetting the other important things like spare ammunition which usually comes in the form of lasgun power packs which again, each power pack is more than capable of carrying up to a thousand rounds of ammunition and can be readily recharged via a charging point or via a solar or thermal energy in a pinch. And considering that a crate or even a box of ammunition would house about twenty power packs, would result in an additional twenty thousand rounds of extra ammunition and again this is your typical ammo box, you can shove in over a billion rounds of easily replaceable and rechargeable ammunition
While visually the Punisher cannons are definitely based GAU 8's, I feel tactically they're more akin to the M61 20mm cannon, the poper 40k equivalent of the GAU 8 is the Avenger Bolt Cannon IMO
The avenger bolt cannons size is vastly larger than the assault cannon. The assault cannon is probably around 30mm, I wouldn't be surprised if the Avenger bolt cannon is around 50mm. Lots of anti-air/airburst can be put in a 50mm weapon.
Also thing to note is in 40K there is multitude of different explosives developed, well as materials, so if we replace steel of GAU8 with something studier it can be thinner and replace explosive in the shells with something spicier that fits into smaller room, casing can be smaller as well, making the whole thing smaller. Bolt shells are larger since those house both AP well as HE components while still be able to remove standard humans torso as a mist, so i conclude that gunships weapons are bit lighter in construction while taking less space.
Vendetta crews to astartes, ah yes my lord you are indeed mighty but do you BRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTT?
I sometimes like to imagine Arch giving these talks/lectures to a room full of Imperial Officers still in training at their academy, as well as the absolute befuddlement on their faces as he repeatedly mentions and references events, vehicles and technology from the 20th and 21st Century lol
“Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” gets a gritty sci-fi reboot.
The UH-1 HUEY, AH-1,AV8B,AH-64,C-130,and AC-130E,H,U,J of 40K.
Honestly the Valkyries always felt more mi 24 hindish. Guns to bring hell troop compartment for supplies or infantry
I still believe the biggest advantage Valkyrie has over the Blackhawk is in doctrin department. When a massage of " Blackhawk down" comes through the good day of the officer in charge of the AO ever so rapidly turns into a cluster fuck while a massage of "Valkyrie down" arriving at regimental HQ will hardly even register by the CP personnel...
That is entirely dependant on the operation though.
Sure, if you have a massed air-assault with dozens upon dozens of Valkyries carrying regular Grunts into the fight, one going down isn't going to be all that much of an upset.
If you have a long-range insertion op, with the Valk carrying elite Infantry, like some Warhawks for example, to fulfill an important pinpoint attack, that thing going down is going to cause a significant amount of problems.
Vulture with double punishers has been or was my to go vulture set up, literally the answer to question "Where did my infantry go!". Ahh in old days it was twin linked 20 shot, then it became 40 shot now... it doesn't exist anymore exept in legacy rules. Sad times.
Yeah, same with triple twin-linked lascannons was much better tank popper with the Vendetta. A lot easier on the wallet since it was just an upgrade kit to the Valkyrie.
Never was a big fan of the flying boxes, but the vulture with that central turbine has to be one of the sexiest aircraft in james workshop's arsenal.
So do the Aeronautica units operate under the Guard or Navy command? Either makes sense and like the last video having dedicated Air Cavalry units would probably be limited to developed Imperium worlds with well developed militarys like Cadia (formerly), Elysia, Armageddon and possibly Catachan where air transport is probably the safest option to move troops. Honestly I always figured the best way to divide Guard and Navy assets was "designed to operate on a planet" and everything else.
I think they made it to where most of the air support is under navy jurisdiction in the imperium, but that might also be because most of the flyers that the imperium has that operate inside of an atmosphere can also operate in space battles as fighter swarms
@Rob Rib makes sense, especially with specific training and maintenance requirements. Man things were so much simpler back when it was all just the Imperial Army.
Actually I have no idea how the unified command structure of the Great Crusade Imperial Army would work. Would it be specialty tracks between fleet officers and terrestrial officers? Which one would hold authority during operations? Were regiments just attached to warships unless wiped out or reassigned to a planet? Granted the Astartes don't care and you had the Primarch wandering around that could easily do everything, except Angron, but there had to be a couple trillion troops and thousands of ships operating without a Space Marine in sight. Maybe Guilliman separating the two was just to make everything easier.
Yes. Technically they are navy. Realistically they are usually attached to their units permanently.
There is also the Phantine Fighter Corps which in lore is the only known imperial guard specific aeronautica force which takes part in the Sabbat Worlds Crusade
@@lordfrostwind3151 they separated the guard and navy much like why they made the guard regiments limited in what they can field. So they don't have another Horus Heresy or if they do, they can counter it more readily
Love these Imperial Armor videos with the detail and depth you give them.
I always thought it was strange that there is no chinook/heavy lift analog among the valkyrie variants, something able to not only carry a large amount of troops and supplies internally, but also stow a container or field gun and carry in slung beneath.
I think maybe Forgeworld would of released eventually, but then they got highjacked by GW to make nothing but new Marine models so we'll never know if it was planned or not
It's clear they would have them because the guard carries no integrated naval transport units, or naval units at all outside specialist water regiments. This means every single major bit of equipment must be airlifted from one continent to the next on any planet with something resembling oceans... including tanks and IFVs like the chimera and the russ. I would imagine more strategic grade stuff like titans and super heavies are dropped by dedicated landers from orbit once the "beachhead" is made.
@@00yiggdrasill00 you've got Techrach heavy landers and Devourer dropships and those huge (and as far as I know unnamed) landers you see behind Creed senior in the main art of him, but that's all super heavy regimental lift grade, the sort of thing dropping off entire regiments and support equipment or supplies by the kilotonne and needs about a square kilometre+ to land in, next down you have in the Gaunts Ghosts novel 'Only in Death' features something roughly analogous to a C-47 that attempts to resupply the Ghosts on Jago( I dont remember if its named), and the Cain novels feature unnamed dropships of about company size, but there's not really anything filling the platoon size, it just seems to be a missing link in the chain, you've got transports scaled for squads, companies even regiments, but if you just need to drop off 40 odd guys or a few tonnes of equipment there's nothing really for that niche
@@maddlarkin thanks for the breakdown. I wasn't aware there was all that stuff in the background. I knew of the orbital dropships but not the rest.
@yiggdrasill if you check out the Varks Chapter 1 fan film it's got a really cool depiction of the big unnamed landers from the Tyrok fields painting and the Tetrachs loading on Kreig
@@maddlarkin thanks will do
With the transition from talking about hell strike missile to the "manned by 2 crew", I was sure he was going to say the missile
was manned by two crew..... I mean it wouldn't be the worst thing the imperium has done ;)
You're confusing orks with the imperium.
Orks would definitely stuff a grot into a missile to pilot the missile onto target.
@@spugggaldon361 penitent engines?
The heavy bolters aren't removed. They are on a hinged arm that swings back so the door can shut.
I always think the Valkyries as being like Russians helicopters transport. Being able to get troops there and support them.
And generally allergic to Stingers...
You obviously haven't been following the war in the Ukraine lol, I remember last year, feb/march I was working nights, was watching you tube, it showed a Hind 24 getting hit by a missile, it burst into flames, tumbled into a field and exploded, I felt sick , 10 men dead , 2 crew and 8 passengers,
Reddit Armchair generals incoming
@tictoc3148 I mean, same thing happens when an APC or IFV or any other kind of transport dies. But yeah, the US learned its helicopter borne infantry lesson in Vietnam.
@@ericsteenbergen9470 I've an urge to listen to fortunate son after your reply lol
1 The gau-8 is not mounted the plane is built around it
2 9 thousand pounds recoil / 25 round bursts
3 and 16 thousand pounds on 11 external ord hardpoints yes thats right 8 2thousand pound smartbombs. or whatever else you can put on there.
On a side topic an A-10 can literally carry a fully loaded B-17
It's surprising to me that the tech-priests allow self-guided missiles to be destroyed through firing them, but I only know the lore through this channel.
I was organising my Audible books last night. I have bought 15 this year since I fell into this universe in the cold winter.
I didn't realise there was life outside “The Culture” and “The Lord of the Rings”.
I have been hearing about gunships etc in “Eisenhorn” and “Ravenor”.
You have expanded my knowledge.
Thank you Kind Soul :)
I wonder if a flight sim game in which you're a pilot of one of these things would be fun.
Think about flying across massive battlefields with a mission to drop troops off under fire. Or provide CAS.
Would be fun
You forgot the Spectre class valkyrie armoured assault carrier. 4 engines nose mounted autocannon. 4 door heavy bolter's. 4 hard points for rocket pod's ect. can carry a chimera 10 troops or 20 troops.
Warhammer lore this is exactly what I needed right now thanks.🤘
Wow, more lore! You've been spoiling us lately, Arch! Thank you! =)
Arch’s giggle when talking about the GAU-8,… near adorable.
The Valkyrie, hope for the forces on man, and bane for their enemies. It's so simple in concept, and terrifying deadly in practice.
Flight of the Valkyries is the only song that accurately describes how effective these birds are in battle.
It should weigh twice that looking at its stats and those of Chimera comparing it to IRL things as they are simply BMP1/2 and Mi-24 but with even better armor.
Skytalon is putting even the Chinook to shame. 33k lbs vehicle to lift only 10k looks paltry compared to that.
Arch. When are we going to make an OGRYN lore video. U made ratlings... Those little pestlike fekers, so why cant u make the bestest of boys lore vid yet
Well there are jump pack troops that can have sustained flight with their bavkpacks so the engine power makes sense
Can we get a lore video on Cadian Shock Troops and Kasrkin at some point?
“TRAITORS DON’T SURF!”
An 85ft container can be maxed out at 12K pounds and a Sky Talon can carry 28K tons! Nice!
Despite its limitations the valk when used correctly an be a devastating weapons platform and whilst ten troopers might not sound like a lot, ten stormtroopers or ten Elysian drop troopers or even for heavy weapons teams can be a game changer
What's more likely with the Vendetta is it has capacitors/battery packs for the lascannons and it uses the power generated by the engines to recharge them while not in use. If that sounds ridiculous, I can assure you it isn't. Modern aircraft already use the power of the main engines to use on electronic systems. (In fact, power generation is the limiting factor for jamming pods on aircraft. Some pods also have their own. Some pods like the ALQ-99 have their own propeller/ram air turbine for power generation to meet demand.) And these engines clearly generate far more power than anything flying today.
Even in the grim darkness of the far future, flying spinny gun go BRRR
Wait, the vendetta is 9 to 13 tons? So a bit less than the vtol f35b's empty weight of 14.5 tons? That must be some really light armour 😮
40K has a material called “plasteel” that is a stronger than steel as light has aluminum.
Fair enough 🤔
So, if an enemy tries to reenforce a position by airborne troop transports and your Airforce is able to bind their escorts, Vendettas are a viable option to attack the Transports?
Now I want Fire raptor and storm eagle Lore, but I already know there's basically nothing. Not to mention, All astartes gunships must be capable to effectively engage air/space targets.
Remeber that all that extra armor could theoretically be used in the final line of defense/offense for a true dedicated pilot of the imperium, which is to say engaging in melee with an aircraft. Otherwise known as kamikaze attacks. If your cannons run dry and something absolutely needs to die before its too late all that armor can be quite the munition at 1000 kph. The commisar might even say something nice about your courage.
I like all of these flyers, the bad part is the models are XBOX HUGE. Seriously, I needed a separate box just to carry all my Valkyries/Vendettas for my old stormtrooper guard build. Damn if it wasn't cool though.
Arch, is there any Imperial Guard Regiments that use exoskeletons for combat operations? If so, would you consider doing a presentation on them? If there are none, why do you think that is so? Thank you for spreading the knowledge of the Grim Dark universe.
There is one called the arkhan in the book fire caste. They are loosely based on confederate soldiers from the American civil war.
@@jesspayne5548 Thank you. I will try to find that. Be well.
"A valkyrie D. Shas´o, what is an imperial gunship doing here?!"
Thanks Arch
Keep up the great work
Love fly units
The Vendetta Gunship; Six Lascannons all in one place!
The Hunter Killer missile's machine spirit knows where it is because it knows where it isnt.
IIRC someone put the Valkyrie model in a wind tunnel. Apparently it had negative lift, similar to an F1 racecar.
Apparently the Heldrake had pretty good lift characteristics.
Arch definately does loves his logistics.
Of course Arch rants about logistics again
I'm surprised there isn't a crew chief on board in the back like modern Black Hawks but I guess they can do without.
Did I just hear that a gun is equivalent to a GAU8 Avenger... and that somebody decided it would be a good idea to put TWO of these on one aircraft? Yeah, this is 40k alright.
Honestly, the 30k version is believable. If you have a fusion reactor in that thing, you can power Quad lascannons*2 on the sides twin lascannons on the wings and the switch between the neutron laser projector or the twin avenger.
As a side note, they label the astartes aircraft engines as basically a turbofanjet, I bet they could do better if they decided plasma is more fun, less fuel in atmosphere more power and no need for a totally separate rocket engine.
@@tarektechmarine8209 Just the 40k design logic is what I love the most. "So, we have this tank killing gun in reality. It's so nuts they literally designed the gun first and then designed a plane capable of flying it into battle. So, what we're gonna do is dual wield them."
Always a good day when you upload a new video
I am still very confused as to HOW IoM Aircraft even stay airborne. Looking at the models (the art fudges this somewhat), the shape of their wings is ZERO lift. They are just slabs of metal. So are they Aerodynes, lift by sheer thrust alone. Or do they use lift engines, engines whose primary or sole function is to generate lift, WITHOUT thrust. A Star Wars Repulsorlift system is basically a Lift engine.
Don't think too hard about it. But I did model my own fire raptor to be slightly more plausible. I wonder if there's any mad person who would take up a challenge to make 40k aircraft fly but still very much look the same.

75mm of armour. There are many WWII light WARSHIPS with that or less.
30mm at 4000 rounds/minute is basically the same that the Gau-8 gun in the A-10 is shooting.
Nothing futuristic about that, Arch.
Better cooling, accuracy and targeting, duh. Nah just joking, I'm the only person with that head canon, everyone else knows they aim by russian anti aircraft? Sights.
it is the same ... because he said so in the video. He specifically talked about the GAU-8 and it's specs, because the specs for the punisher isn't really available. Sooo ... he never said these specs were futiristic ... are you trolling? :*
