    Holdfast MoneyMaker B&H Description:
Hold two cameras comfortably at your hips, and one by your chest with this medium Money Maker Three-Camera Harness with Silver Hardware by HoldFast Gear made of tan English Bridle leather. For comfortable wear and shooting, the straps of the harness lie in an "X" pattern across your back for added support. The Speed Clutch mechanism allows the camera to slide along the harness to eye level easily.
To secure your gear to the harness, the system includes two Camera Holdfast Accessory Clips that screw into the 1/4-20" tripod threads of each camera or lens. There are two metal D-rings on the front straps of the harness, and two on the back. By attaching the included Camera Leashes to the D-rings on the front, you are able to carry a third camera on the harness. Each Camera Leash also has a D-ring at the top, allowing you to attach even more accessories to the front of your harness. You can attach an HF Luggage Tag Wallet, or yet another Camera Leash to these extra D-rings for holding a lens or pouch.
The regular size Money Maker provides the best fit for people between 5'8" and 6'2" in height. The Money Maker Three-Camera Harness is made in the USA and backed by a lifetime warranty against manufacturer's defects.
Designed to hold a camera on the left and right side of your body at hip level. A third camera can be attached to the harness by snapping the included Camera Leashes into the D-rings on the front of the harness.
Speed Clutch mechanism allows you to slide each camera smoothly from your side, up to eye level to shoot.
Includes two Camera Holdfast Accessory Clips that screw into the 1/4-20" tripod threads of your cameras.
Six metal D-rings permit you to attach accessories.
English Bridle leather is made in a process where only the best grades of leather are stuffed with grease and finished with wax. One side has a smooth, flesh texture and the other has a grainy texture.
    Spider Holster: (B&H description)
The SpiderPro Dual Camera System improves upon the Single Camera system with the addition of another SpiderPro Holster, Plate and Pin. It includes a belt made from webbing materials similar to those used in army/police equipment. The belt features a triple-lock buckle and fits most waists with its adjustable 28 - 50" (71.1 - 127 cm) size. The rest of the package consists of a pad for comfort, 2 holsters, 2 camera plates and 2 pins. Using this system, you can remain hands-free while your DSLR hangs at your side, waiting for that grab shot. The SpiderPro belt holds the entire rig, the holsters hold the cameras, the cast aluminum alloy plates attach to the tripod sockets of your cameras and let you easily connect your quick-release for tripod use, and the stainless steel pins attach to the plates. The entire assembly slides into the holsters, which secure to the belt using Spider's 2-position triple lock buckle system. Your cameras stay at your side while retaining complete freedom of movement.
When the cameras are slid into the holster, they lock into place. When placed into the upper portion of the holster, they're ready to be drawn as soon as the lock releases - just as if you were wearing a holstered pistol. This heavy-duty system is targeted at the "run-and-gun" shooter who is constantly on the prowl for that "keeper".
    Black Rapid B&H Description:
This BlackRapid Double Breathe Camera Harness accommodates two cameras by allowing them to hang from the right and left shoulders. The cameras can then rest upside-down along both the right and left hips so they can be quickly raised for use. Even when connected to two large cameras with their attached lenses, the Double Breathe remains comfortable to wear due to its resilient and breathable mesh pads which cushion the back and shoulders. The pads' structure optimizes air circulation between the wearer and the harness, which works to remove and minimize perspiration in warm and hot environments. For those with a thin or small build, the Double Slim Breathe Camera Harness can be chosen for a better fit.
To attach to a camera or a lens, both of the Double Breathe Camera Harness' webbings feature a durable, brass and zinc-alloy CR-3 ConnectR locking carabiner. Also provided is a BlackRapid FR-5 FastenR Breathe for every carabiner. Each FR-5 FastenR Breathe creates a connection point using a camera or lens's 1/4"-20 tripod mount and has a large, integrated D-ring for easy use with BlackRapid webbings that utilize a CR-3 ConnectR.

After 19 years of being a full time wedding photographer, carrying two DSLR's with battery grips and flashes over my shoulders I got a slipped disc. My pilot friend recommended his massage therapist to get me back on my feet. I went and she decompressed my spine - essentially giving me back another inch of height after 4 sessions. She agreed that carrying cameras all day long on my shoulders was a huge factor in compressing my spine. We discussed pt exercises as well as finding a system that would enable me to carry my cameras on my hips to prevent this from happening again. This is how I found the Spider system. Excited to put them to use and not put myself through spinal compression sessions any longer!

A few years ago I started to have really bad back pain and i checked with my Doc and he told me to get rid of any weight on my shoulder. I was using the Black Rapid and the Sunbounce, single and double Versions. So I looked around and found the Spyder Holster. Ever since than I don't have issues with my Back anymore and a really fast System what holds my Cameras in a safe place. To avoid any problems while my Cameras are in my hands, I checked on Handstraps and found the Peak Design Handstrap the best for me. Really a perfect Combination for Weddings and Events and I even use it in the Studio. Straps are killing your spine, ask you doc.

      Hi Karsten,
I am not using a Spyder Holster (yet) but I do use a Peak Design strap with their handstrap. I find the handstrap very secure and it would give me confidence to use a belt system. I think what you are doing might be a good solution for Robert.

I have been using the Spider-holster (-knock-off-)-bracket fixed on the left strap of my Lowepro backpack in combination with a Blackrapid (-knock-of-) slingstrap. It is great to fix the camera to the backpack when moving around more actively but you normally have the camera hanging on the cross-body slingstrap. When I added an additional handstrap it was almost perfect. I am now changing to the Peak Design now because the massive pin from the Spider-bracket makes is difficult to store the camera in a bag, makes it difficult to hold it and clumsy when you want to change to tripod-use.

As someone else mentioned, the SpiderPro Hand Strap solves your security issue as your hand slips inside the strap as you retrieve or secure the camera in the Spider holster. The strap is secure in case someone bumps you.

Agreed. Having used the Spider Holster dual, a few different straps to include CarrySpeed/Blackrapids, bags, hand straps.. I've found that a holy trinity combined with a single SpiderHolster, SpiderLight Hand Strap and a Hadley Pro for lens swaps is THE best portable combo you can have. Lights, stands and extra bodies can hang out in a rollie bag of some sort in a safe area and you're as mobile as you can be while being as prepared as you can be.

I've tried it. The hand strap takes a while to wiggle your hand in to (unless you wear it loose, then there's little point).
Plus, the hand strap takes a lot of time to attach to the other end (camera body). I suppose you could use Peak Design anchors and hand strap to speed up the process though. I've been using the Spider holster with no hand for a few years. Haven't dropped it yet, but I anticipate buying a Holdfast for weddings.

I started with the BlackRapid (the single and dual-straps, using up to 4 cameras at once!) and loved it for the longest time.. but after a few hours you really start to feel the weight and a few years ago it actually detached from the camera (unscrewing it while walking). Camera was fine but the flash transmitter was destroyed. I also found issues where it would tend to swing around and hit things.
I switched to the SpiderHolster Pro a few years ago and added 3 extra camera holsters to the belt (making it hold 4 total) and have loved it. It's a bit scary at first since you need to make sure the camera "clicks in" each time, but I've been able to walk around for full days without any issues with weight from it and the cameras hold in place and seem secure.

Well done - from a wedding photographer's perspective. I shoot med to telephoto - distant birds & animals - and I use a short adjustable mono-pod that screws into the bottom of my cameras. I've made a pouch that hangs mid-torso which the foot of the mono-pod goes into. This gives me added stability when shooting with the long reaching lenses. All 3 of your examples have the cameras base threads being used as the attached anchor. I need these threads for my mono-pod. Maybe there is an adapter ? Again good video.

Thanks for this remarkable review - just what I wanted to check out!
I do have the black rapid straps and so after seeing this review went to check them out again and found that there's a clip that adjusts how far back the camera hangs on the straps. So after moving the clip right back - loosening and moving it towards the back of the strap - i was able to adjust how the cameras hung from the shoulders - whether towards the front, giving you the pull on the front of the shoulders or neutrally balanced or just sitting on the side of the buttocks as with the hold fast straps.
I also checked and saw that the straps themselves can be adjusted for hanging height so one can basically make them as short as the hold fast ones as well if desired.
This made them incredibly comfortable. Plus if I really, really wanted to have a quick release as with the HoldFasts, I could simply clip in a Pelican Clip instead. Also if carrying only one camera, the single configuration works wonders.
So my takeaway is that after watching the video I was considering all the benefits of the HoldFasts and then discovered that I can customize the Black Rapids to suit.
So - if you have the Black Rapids, don't bother spending all that money on the Hold Fasts.
You have everything you need already!.

Also the fancy clip to attach the HoldFast strap to the bottom of the camera can be obtained from Stores like a Fleet Farm or Tractor supply where they sell horseback/ saddle/bridal supplies or possibly even Marinas where they sell sail boating supplies or even hardware where hooks and clips are sold.

I use Rebel East strap which is basically MoneyMaker type of strap. It's great. I also have couple of BlackRapid straps but anything like MoneyMaker will always win. It's not only utility. It's also high quality and looks. Yes, as a wedding photographer I pay a lot of attention to how my potential clients see me.

In 10 years it's happened to me 3 times. It's partially the type of weddings I do, jewish, eastern european, and middle eastern weddings which all feature a lot of exuberant dancing and performance. But mostly my fault, for loving to capture all that from the center of the action.

I've used a spider holster for about two years (shooting sports). I'm about to try a black rapid (on order). What I don't like about the spider is the time it takes to holder it. I don't feel secure about doing so without looking, and that takes time. I want one that I can just guide down and let go without looking.

I was following another photographer at a Remembrance Day because we were both moving around shooting the service. She had what I'm pretty sure was a Black Rapid Double Breathe harness which caught my attention by how well it blended in with her sharp looking dark green tunic and stayed in place like it was proper kit. I haven't seen any other harness that would be that inconspicuous. I'd never heard of the brand until that time.

Great review. I've been a long time Black Rapid user because they came out early and it was a solid product. I was interested in the Holdfast. But the one I want cast almost $400. So I was like I'll just stick to what I currently have that works just fine for what I need it to do. I would be basically spending $350 - $400 just to "look cool".

I've had a Black Rapid strap unscrew once. Luckily the lens hood adsorbed most of the impact and only the filter thread was damaged. It was my fault for not tightening it properly after taking my camera off a tripod and reattaching the strap. That brings me to the biggest drawback of the system, if you often switch between a strap and a tripod (e.g. hybrid wedding photo/video shooting) it can get pretty annoying. It's for this reason that I switched to a Peak Design strap.
Recently I found out that Black Rapid make an Arca Swiss plate with a Black Rapid loop which would have completely solved my problem.

Around 2:48 you mentioned that when you lift one camera up the whole thing is unbalanced. It's actually because you buckled the middle strap in your chest so the 2 straps on the side are connected. If you unbuckle it, then you don't have that problem anymore.

Nice review....I have owned the Spider Holster for two years. It's a great system and I use a camera grip so really no worries at weddings with the camera getting knocked out of your hand. (I mainly shoot weddings). I don't however like the side pads on the Spider belt and thought of cutting them off, although they do buffer the camera from rubbing on your leg, but i just don't like the way they look. Can you provide a link to the Think Tank belt...I didn't see one as I'd like to try my Spider Holster attached it. Also,....Does the Think Tank belt have a double latch lock like the Spider Belt? Thanks...............................................

Robert, I just watched your TH-cam on the three strap comparisons. A few comments I can throw in the pot.
1: On the Holdfast system, I made one similar way back in analog days for my cameras. As for hooking up to your cameras, try this. (BTW those hooks are really called "Pelican Hooks" and have been used on sailboats for years.) You only pull the tiny strap to open the hook not to close it. To close it just squeeze it semi-lightly. They are fast, quick, and hold very well.
2: Concerning the holster system. (Yes, I made one like it way back also but threw it away.) You didn't mention that your cameras rub on your skin and that's bad enough. When something might be in your pants pockets, it makes it double bad and after a short while really hurts. To remedy that I used large band-aids on parts of my legs/hips. That was also a pain so I ended up chucking the holster type.
3: If anyone wants to make leather straps and like I did, use leather made for horses, (love mine and you're right about them standing out!), be for warned. When you sweat or happen to get wet in the rain, the leather dye WILL stain light colored shirts. After a couple,(few?), times the dye will wear out and there are no problems, hopefully.

Why not use something like the Black Rapid (modified with quick release carabiners) together with a Spider Holster? Then there is no weight on the shoulders still keeping the cameras safe.

Robert, I know this video is old now but if you see this I was wondering if you've seen the ads I keep seeing for the Xaperture leather holster? It seems a lot like the hold fast but doesn't have the quick release you liked. Except for not having that quick release I like the back of Xaperture better one on their site and I like the wide shoulder pad it has. I just wish it had that quick release. What are your thoughts?

I use a wrist strap and or a sling strap with the spider pro works fine you can also attach a second spider for duel camera system the camera plate will not come undone unlike those with the simple screw fitting also you can mount a tripod mount on the plate , the think tank belt also has a 3 camera harness the best solution for screw mounting is the sun sniper mount as it can have a lock to stop it coming undone also it has a ballbearing race so can totally revolve without coming undone ,for looks I love the holdfast but would fit sun sniper camera fittings .

I have a black rapid sport for one camera - a lot of minuses. The first minus-the fact that the camera uncontrollably dangles. When you're in motion you need to constantly observe that the camera does not hit the door jamb or when you Crouch - it can hit the ground hard. The second minus-when you take the camera in hand-the belt, despite the fixation-jumps off the shoulder. The third minus is the price. Leather belts for two cameras-look stylish, today it is important to look stylish at the wedding, if you work at premium events. The solution with the spider - cool - but personally I am confused by two things: 1) two cameras is quite a lot of weight - not losing the pants, the belt still would have added braces to the shoulders. 2) camera without a strap in his hands is the opportunity to drop. The ideal solution is a spider + shoulder straps with additional fixation of the cameras on the straps

Great info. I've had a Spider Holster for a few years as a sports photographer/photojournalist, and it worked well for awhile to carry my 70-200, but the lock has stopped staying open and thus locks the camera when I don't want it to be, which is not ideal when I want to change cameras quickly because a big play happens. So I started looking for a new harness that can carry two cameras, and it's been between the Hold Fast and the Black Rapid double sling. Seeing how those clips work on the Hold Fast seals the deal. Being able to quickly take the camera off of the harness is a huge plus for getting celebration shots in a scrum where I might need to get the camera over my head. And bonus for the improved posture from the way the harness distributes the weight. It's pricey, but I'm going to go with the Hold Fast.

For events where I use multiple bodies (sometimes 3) I would comdine a Spider Holster belt with tool belt suspenders over shouders & clipped spider holster with 2 Spider type belt clips that were oriented to attach to the suspenders straps. To solve the security problem of possibility of dropping cameras while attaching or removing from the Spider clips I fabricated costume 1/8" thick cables that attach to the tool belt suspender straps & were long enough to reach the holder on my belt. I later switched to using long fine cable fishing gear leaders, that are used between the line & fishing baits. These leaders are very strong light weight & very thin so not to noticeable. If you're not worried about looking cool this system was great for keeping everything under control (no dangling) safe & spread the weight evenly over the shoulders and waist.

Great video... but you forgot to compare the holdfast to the black rapid in terms of holding the camera way above your head arms fully outstretched to get a shot(you said the hold first would be better at that..?)

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

I said the holdfast is better because you can detach it quickly to do that. For my body, I would never keep it long enough at the sides to be able to do it while still attached.

  • @JaredRibic
    @JaredRibic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I hate having a camera strap around my neck. When I would shoot with only one body, I would make the strap as long as possible and sling it diagonally across my body, and that worked well for me for years.
A few years ago I picked up a BlackRapid dual strap after I started shooting consistently with two bodies. Coming from years of shooting with my cameras in 'normal' orientation, I didn't really like my cameras hanging upside-down, especially when I have triggers in the hotshoe and they get jammed into the ground every time I squat down. I keep a Manfrotto tripod plate on all of my bodies and use the special BlackRapid connector for tripod plates, and it works well; although the ring is a bit thicker than the standard BlackRapid connector and sometimes it's not as easy to attach/remove. It's fairly comfortable when walking with two bodies, but when I'm holding one body, the other body pulls the strap to one side, and I've never liked that.
Another photographer I shoot weddings with uses the Spider waist system. I completely agree with you about the potential to get the camera knocked out of your hands (or drop the camera if you're hanging over a ledge). She had the camera get stuck in the Spider belt a few times, and I also don't like the enormous stubs sticking out of the bottom of the Spider plate. I also don't like the camera bodies sticking out of my waist, especially when trying to maneuver through crowds of people. Although I do envy the Spider system occasionally, when I need to lean forward or squat down with my BlackRapid strap and my two bodies are swinging all over the place and in my way.
I picked up a Hold Fast MoneyMaker about a month ago, and have only used it three times so far. The quick-release system is definitely superior to the BlackRapid, and the Pelican Quick Release Shackle connectors seem quieter than the squeaky BlackRapid clips. It is *definitely* better to wear when only using one camera. My main complaint (so far) is that it doesn't seem to be long enough. Maybe I got the wrong size? The part that attaches the camera to the strap itself could be a little bit longer in my opinion. Sometimes I feel like I'm not able to pull the camera far enough away from my body because that section seems too short. This week I'll try using the MoneyMaker for a wedding (I usually use the BlackRapid), and see how I like it. There are a couple other options I'm looking at in case the MoneyMaker doesn't work for me.
I considered the KAWA Pro dual strap (kawaprogear.com/product/kawa-pro-duo-royal-black/) for a while (because of how much I dislike the way my BlackRapid feels when one body pulls it to the side), but I'm not crazy about the way the camera connects. Other than that, these look really great, and seem like the weight is more centralized, which helps when you have a heavy camera on one side. If I got one of these, I'd probably replace the mounting system with a Pelican Shackle, like the MoneyMaker: www.aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-quick-release-shackle.html

Just upgraded from the Holdfast to the *Rose Anvil* strap system and like it even better! It also gives you the option to put the cameras on your belt while still being in the strap system. Best of both worlds.

When the camera is in the hand, there is nothing better than a hand-strap. Neck-straps get on the way all the time. The best I have come across is the Pentax FDP Grip Strap, which comes with an extra handgrip (alas not a battery grip) but that only fits the Pentax Z-1p (discontinued in the 1990s) and its predecessor Z-1 which is also at least 27 years old (mine is 29) and not digital. The strap can be attached to other cameras though, bit one will need another base plate, e.g. an MPU-100 to attach the strap under the camera.
There are dozens of modern options though, the Kaiser 6707 is good, I am not sure if it is real or pu leather. Another is from Peak design, made from artificial fabric.
These hand-straps can combine with any of the shown systems in the video.

Why do all these systems require the use of some sort of lug that's screwed into the bottom of the camera? Can't the camera strap lugs be used as well? That way the camera would fall to its side rather than be upside down? Those lugs are designed to be load bearing since they are for camera straps after all. This has always confused me and makes me wonder if these camera strap options can be modified to use the camera strap lugs instead of some lug that's screwed into the camera bottom.
Any more information on this would be much appreciated!

+MICHAEL MAH PHOTOGRAPHY I'll be honest I've never considered that but it's a great thought. I do like that it falls upside down because I can always tell where to put my hand and it's a really natural path for your hand/arm. On its side it might be a bit more odd with the strap itself being in between where you go to grab your camera. Or on the opposite side in which you would have to reach below you to grab it.

I think it's because when attached to to the bottom it hangs better with long lens .

    • @nanhi48
      @nanhi48 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Michael, you made a good point. I tried a Y-concept from an unused camera strap, where the two Y open ends go into the LH & RH Strap Lugs on the Body and the 3rd end goes round the Shoulder Strap through a Swivel Carabiner. Works, but I did not find it comfortable using the Viewfinder - OK shooting with the LCD though. With the Camera + Accessory hanging from a single Tripod Socket, unscrewing of the D-Ring and the camera falling to the ground have been documented. I have a simple solution as a safety tether - Key Ring with Chain + Swivel Spring Hook. Replace the chain with a strong Nylon String. You can retain the Chain - shortened length - but it will scratch the camera body. Attach the Key Ring to the Shoulder Strap and the Swivel Hook to one of the Strap Lugs on the Camera Body.

On the Spider Holster and Double Black Rapid together at 11:15, did you attached it in the back of Spider Plated? If yes, which hole? I try to picture that and can't image that. Please respond! This is my NEW system that I am using now (both Double Black Rapid and Spider Holster) on Think Tank Belt. I hate it when my lenses hit the floor when I tried to sit down or couching. I am adding Spider Holster to hold it up and not bouncing around when I walked too. But not sure this system works or not. What do you think?

No system is perfect. I think you expected too much from the various systems. Do not expect from a system what the system cannot deliver. I did see a wedding photographer with the Holdfast and he looked sharp and professional. Liked the review.

Why not to have both the Spider holster and some kind of over the shoulders straps? The Spider holster would take the weight away and your camera would still be on a strap not to fall on the ground.

Robert I know how to solve your problem of using the spider holster and still have a strap, you have to ditch the standard spider base plate and get the slim plate for use with QR plates. I Use the manfrotto RC2 plates to connect to my tripods when I am out hiking or canoeing, I currently use the black rapids single, (I will be getting the double for my second camera), but I dont like the camera swinging around while climbing over logs, rocks, ect, I have to put a hand on it, I shoot with a tripod sometimes and handheld for other situations in odd positions. I want to use the spider holster to keep the camera on my hip, and use the strap as drop protection so I dont drop my camera out of the canoe, or at least if I do I can retrieve it quickly. Spider holster makes a low profile hanger plate that will bolt underneath my RC2 QR plate which has the metal ring to clip a harness to, I will also be ditching that finicky black rabids connector, (cut it off and replace it with a small caribeener or something, it sucks) so now I will have the camera on a sling with a spider clip to keep it secured to my side, and a QR plate holding it all together so I can take the camera off the strap quickly and mount it to a tripod all within a few seconds. you might think this is overkill, but I work out in a sugarbush and carry my camera frequently while working, but usually end up setting it down and leaving it behind because it swings all over, so that is my solution, the belt holster will take the weight off your shoulder straps, but you'll still have the harness for backup, and the QR plate is a nice square edge that sits flat on tables, and also allows you to dock the camera on a tripod out of the way which I do quite frequently or on a fluid head for getting quick footage, and then back off when I need to, I have been looking for a months and have recently discovered all of these things I will be using for my next wilderness adventure with 2 cameras, maybe a third for testing purposes
I will be posting a video when I get it all setup, I think it will be exactly what the Doctor ordered

I totally agree about the insecurity of the think tank system. My rule is NEVER shoot untethered. Just. Never. I've broken so many lenses over the years because of the unforseen. My 85L getting shattered was the last straw. :(

Could you please explain or describe a little more? Own one hold fast and want to know the weaknesses to prep myself. I've also seen other (JUST ONE) hold fast owners use the harness without using the secondary/safety strap on the camera. I understanding using the safety nylon straps additional on the camera does not do much in normal circumstances. Just like how seat belts are useless until we need them. I may have to rotate the camera once or twice but I don't see how the camera would drop if the intended safety strap was put together with the hook. Please share. I want to minimize risk. Greetings from Malaysia.
