Starting to do some paid shoots and the 35 + 85 combo works like a charm. Great focal lengths to shoot. I do have to invest in a second camera body, not only as a backup but also for an increase of flexibility. Swapping lenses can be a drag and you may miss a moment or two.

When there is tight space just go with 24mm and 50mm , when u hav more space 35mm and 85mm

In agreement. I use a 35 on my full frame and a 50 on my crop. Works out well and economical.

  • @james1939-s1c

I have moved to mostly a 35mm - 85mm combo and still take 50mm 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8. The 70-200 2.8 can really crush a distracting background and pull in distant objects if needed. Great video, little over the top with the hipster theme.

Good call. I loved using just two primes when I used to shoot weddings. My faves were the 35 1.4 the 85 1.2 and the 200 f2 the latter awesome for candid distance subject isolation. I also used to carry the 14 mm 2.8 as well.

You MUST be my dad, because you knew EXACTLY what's going on in my life, and I had no idea! I've booked my first wedding for later this year, and was contemplating going with two DSLRs and only primes. I wasn't sure if that was a great idea or, if it was, how best to make it work. This was exactly what I needed. I feel a lot more confident with my plan, kinda impressed with my own ingenuity, and more prepared on how to make it work beautifully. Thank you pops!!
(*disclaimer, you look at least a decade younger than me, so getting to call anyone else 'dad' is a salve to my sensitive ego :D)

Thanks for sharing your process. I prefer a zoom primarily the 70-200 since what venues I've shot are smaller and don't allow for a lot of movement. It also allows me to minimize lens changes. I also don't have the budget for that many L primes. Love the look that you produce.

At weddings, we did everything with 24-50mm lens & I had zoom too that I didn't use too much. I don't remember the length. Carried 2 cameras with me, always had an old one in a car. I had it so why not?
    Excellent video.

Excellent video. If one can afford, having a 2nd camera body is insanely important if the main one fails. I love the idea of having the prime for low light, however, how do you manage capturing main shots at a wedding and spur of the moment reactions without easily zooming in with a telefoto?

yeah ...cool recap on your approach man. (just bumped into your channel).
i shoot almost everything except Canon..hehehe, but i have a very similar approach, to yours.
i’m just missing the 45mm which i have been been postponing for..a few years, now.. actually.
Sony and Fuji haven’t gone any...and the Nikon is so old..and damn expensive..
i shoot with this approach 80% of the time, for the same reasons..as i prefer to move..
I use my 70-200mm and my 15-30mm zooms for specific times, though. specially outside.
At 200mm you can get really great compression, and great candid moments..cos ppl don’t even realize you’re there.
    i might get a 100-400mm before i get the 45mm, actually.
    thanks for the video,
you seem to have a cool channel man.
i’ll check a few more videos,
    cheers from Portugal ;)

Seriously underrated tip: stitching together two 35mm shots, that'll save your life more than once. Just make sure nothing changes along the edge, and take a backup shot (as you probably should anyway). :)

can you explain what you mean by stitching together two 35mm shots?

      Dave Cremin Yes, please explain.

    • @anthonyisensee
      @anthonyisensee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@andreachavez2016 Basically, you just take two to three shots (usually in portrait orientation), and then use either photoshop or lightroom to electronically merge those photos together into a 'panorama'. As long as nothing has changed along the edges, this can work really, really well, and it allows you to get a wide shot with a tighter lens (think a 35 field of view with an 85, or a 16 field of view with a 35). Eric has a really good video on stitching together photos like this (though, it's a slightly different application, specifically with portraits).

Yeah, a secondary/backup camera is almost a must/important for pro works, especially shooting with primes only. I wasn't even a pro, but when I started out four decades ago to cover events, I used three cameras (Nikon F2A, FE2 & Hasselblad 500 C/M). Back in the dark age of digital, I had Nikon D3, D300 & Canon 5D Mk II with two sets (Canon & Nikon) lens trinity. In addition to backup to backup as best practice, it is much easier to switch focal length (and/or ASA/ISO with film) with multiple cameras.

as they say, what ever gets it up.
Me, I'm a single camera, single lens photographer. For years I only brought my F5 with a '86 50mm 1.8 slapped on it, as well as the D200 for receptions and that was my setup.
Now, I got an F6 and D700 both with 95' 50mm slapped on 'em.
I don't know. Maybe it's my full faith in Nikon products since '03 and seeing them in countless movies, The Lost World Jurassic Park being one of them, that I trust them not to crap out on me at the worst possible time. I've been some Nikons that look as if a train ran 'em over and still work. Memory cards in the other hand. Yeah, I at least have three 32GB for my D700. Though I only really need one.

Very informative video, loved your style of presenting... but I would wish you would have give a few seconds to which body you were using with those lenses, cropped or full frame. Depending on which you are using dramatically affects the lens. I would agree two bodies, one medium wide (35mm on FF) and one medium tele (85mm on FF). I would not consider a 50mm a telephoto. Thanks so much for the inspiration!

Super interesting as always! Do you calibrate your lenses to your cameras? Just wondering how you deal with the super shallow depth of field when you're wide open all the time.

Are you still all prime lenses or did you switch your setup to zoom lenses in the meanwhile?
