As I said on Twitter, it’s a fun series, depends to much on CGI but worth a watch. The last one really pushes the bounds and no the most annoying never does get it in the series
I think what makes this movie work so well is the characters. They feel and act more like real people than you normally see in a movie like this. Even though we don't really get to know them, they seem less like stereotypes and caricatures than usual in my opinion.
Burt was prepared for everything he could think of, but he didn't see underground god-damn monsters coming. He returns in the sequels and is prepared for Graboids then, but fate delights in thwarting his plans. 🤣
i've heard in script writing classes they use this as an example of a perfect script. no detail is introduced that isn't important later, characters don't act insanely stupid because they have to for the movie. it's just a tight well written script.

I really like this movie for the use of physical effects instead of CGI I wish more movies used that today but it's pretty much a lost art at this point
Tremors is one of those films that balances genres quite well, between being a monster flick but with a natural sense of comedy. I myself watched it for the first time a couple years ago because my girlfriend is a fan and turned me onto it. Nice reaction as always!
This cult classic is definitely on my list; what makes the movie great is the bro/best friend/macho love dynamic between Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon is just perfect. And to those who fault the doctor for being stupid: the Graboids would have got him and his wife, anyway; When the generator got spat out, it was already too late to escape.
About the doctor? Not necessarily. Had he and his wife got in the car and drove to town they probably would have been okay. Problem was they didn’t realize just how much danger they were in. Most characters in horror movies don’t know that they’re in danger until it’s too late. In Halloween or Friday The 13th, we the audience know that there’s a psycho killer on the loose. However often times even when the authorities know that there’s a psycho killer stalking the streets/woods, they keep the information away from the public (supposedly to prevent mass panic). So investigating a strange noise isn’t necessarily stupid on the characters part, just ignorant.
The sequels, at least the first few, are still pretty fun, and do an excellent job of subverting expectations, and continuing to feel fresh, while maintaining much of the overall vibe of the first one.
Tremors is such a nostalgic movie for me, I remember seeing it when I was around 12 and it was so fun. It’s a great B-monster flick. Love the acting, the straight forward story and the cool creature design.
Okay. I’ve now watched two of your reaction videos, and I’m really enjoying that you are catching subtleties and nuances that go deeper than most reactor commentaries which usually just document superficial response to being entertained by a film. I’m now hoping that you discover the works of Brian De Palma if you haven’t already seen his films. Most all reactors start with “Carrie” which is undeniably a classic, but I’d love to see someone react to “Body Double.” Although you really need to see Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” and “Vertigo” first in order to fully appreciate the criminally under-appreciated “Body Double.” “Blow Out” is also one of my favorites from De Palma, but nearly all of his films are worthwhile. That dude is a master filmmaker.
I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos so far! I tend to shoot for a balance of real film study and smart mouthery 😂 Some attempts are better than others 🤣
Oh right, your recommends! I think Carrie may be the only de Palma I’ve seen, and I think Vertigo is actually the best Hitchcock, though I haven’t seen Rear Window 🤔
@@RhetoricalThrill I’m no expert. I’m just a film geek who can appreciate both mainstream and fringe stuff. I’ve seen thousands of films, and “Rear Window” is in my top four of all time. I wouldn’t want to oversell it, but you really *need* to see it. 🤓
Tremors is definitely among my absolute favorites. Always enjoyed all the characters except Melvin. Then as I've gotten older and I always liked Burt, but his little speech now early on when he mentions one the student's finding oil or uranium and the Gov hauls up to claim eminent domain resonates more haha Now I'd say don't go beyond the second movie if you choose to checkout the sequels but otherwise the quality definitely dips after this first movie. Great review and wish I could watch this again for the first time myself.
That’s what I’ve heard, second is ok but no more 😂 And yeah, I definitely think Burt and Heather were meant to be more of a joke back then than they are now 🤣
@@RhetoricalThrill Yeah I'd say maybe just to say yeah you've watched them but otherwise watch 2 and call it quits haha What's funny though is that yeah Burt & Heather are the typical survival nut/doomsday prepper sort. But it doesn't come across as insulting as they're still sociable people interacting/involved with their community etc unlike now a days its always so mean spirited with these kinds of portrayals. So its kind of funny that yeah you probably aren't wrong but I just never took it that way myself haha
That can be said about any an all sequels that the quality dips after the first or second movie. So to say that one movie franchise is not worth watching after a certain point. But not another is hypocritical because the same thing can be said for all movie franchises. But the only difference between this movie franchise an the others is big an important. Thing with the Tremors movies they only made them because the fans were asking for them to. Then they only made one if they could make it continue the ongoing continuity from the first movie. You have one solid time line that all makes sense with the Tremors movies. Unlike other movie franchises like Halloween an Friday the 13th an others. Where the story officially ends in the first movie like in Friday the 13th the first movie. Then in the 2nd movie for the Halloween movie franchise. Those writers an directors ended those stories in those movies. But the movie studios interfered an keep them going an going to the point that after the first Friday the 13th movie. It has literally and figuratively no continuity then. After the 2nd Halloween movie not counting the 3rd movie but the 4th movie. You have a mess of multiple time lines all with their own different continuity. The 3rd movie doesn't count because on the Shout / Scream Factory Collector's Edition of Halloween 3 Season of the Witch. On the audio commentary with Tommy Lee Wallace he says. That the movie was originally called Season of the Witch it was written. To be a completely separate thing from the Halloween movie franchise an Michael Myers completely. But the movie studio interfered an said point blank we will not fund a movie called Season of the Witch. If you want us to found the movie you have to call it Halloween 3 or no funding an no movie. So John Carpenter an Tommy Lee Wallace had no choice but to reluctantly agree to call it Halloween 3 inorder to make the movie. Because in the case of the Friday the 13th movies and the Halloween movies. The movie studio took over an they didn't care about quality or story. As long as killer X was in the movie killing people even if it meant. That an they did it several times rewriting previous movies events to keep killer X in the movies. So the point about movies going down hill in quality goes for all movie franchises.
This film is one of me all time favourites, easily in me top ten. The characters are likeable, everyone has their own quirks, ideas and personalities. Not everyone is a stereotypical ‘monster movie” character. The heroes are smart enough to learn how The monsters behave, and the monsters are intelligent and adapt to changing circumstances, forcing our heroes to have to adapt as well. This film really made me fall in Love with small town America, and the sense of Community they have. Is why I moved from Scotland decades ago to find a place like it. Also, Burt Gummer is me Spirit Animal. Me dream is to have a wall of guns just like his.. It’s a work in progress.. ^.-.^
It’s a really great example of leaning into the tropes when it makes sense but elevating them when they can! And that’s funny because I’ve dreamed of Scotland my whole life 💜
Classic good movie. Always loved the survivalists, such fun characters. Fred Ward has been in a few cheesy movies I enjoy like Remo Williams and Cast A Deadly Spell
I loved this movie as a kid, but any time I watched it, I would try avoid the ground for about a week. Yes, definitely more of a monster movie than a horror.
@3:30 It's not that isolated. There's over 2000 people in the area, a city of ~30,000 less than an hour away, an LA is only a couple hours past that. No comment on the presence of giant worms or other causes of seismic oddities...
Fun fact: Melvin's parents were cut from the movie. They were supposed to be gamblers who went to Vegas a lot but their scene was cut. I was wondering why a teen was there by himself so this is what I found out. BTW, Burt (Michael Gross) was in all seven Tremors movies. He's the only one.
Underground god-damn monsters! I love Tremors, it's one of my favourite films. The monsters are dangerous but not unstoppable, with both the people and the Graboids learning about each other in a battle of wits. And the people being pretty smart about it rather than the plot being driven by them being idiots. You know that when the audience are telling the characters to do what they are doing instead of to _not_ do what they're doing. Also interesting as a rare horror film set almost entirely in bright sunlight. The sequels are great too, definitely worth watching too, and even the TV series is fun, even if it's a bit wackier than the films. The second film starts with Earl hired to hunt Graboids at an oilfield in Mexico, but things don't go according to plan...
Tremor is a masterclass in tight screenwriting and story telling. I have seen the rest of the films in the series, I can lightly recommend films 2 and 3, the rest are okay... if I ignore them.
Part 2 is just as good in my opinion. It's really hard to explain how it's so similar to the first one, and yet so different at the same time. Burt and Earl are back, and the comedy is just as good. The 3rd movie is still good, but not as good. I liked the comedic relief character, but we lose the suspensefulness the first two manage to capture. The remaining 4 are so so. I'll keep watching them as long as they keep making them, but I wouldn't recommend to everyone.
