    The most improbable upset in any sporting event of all time. It was indeed professional players vs. amateurs (college kids). If the two squads played each other 1000 times, 999 of the games would likely have been won by the Soviet team. Needless to say the landscape of media, sports, and information gathering (pre-internet) was so radically different in 1980 than it is today. ABC who was the U.S. based outlet who covered the games did not believe that the U.S - U.S.S.R. was competitive enough of a match to even cover the game on a live feed. It was ran in prime time on a tape delay. Imagine that. Spot on accurate period piece. The only slight flaw I found was during the game between the U.S. and West Germany (this was prior to German reunification). The scoreboard displayed the abbreviation GDR (East Germany) for German Democratic Republic when it should have said FRG (Federal Republic of Germany). A pity that the real life Coach Herb Brooks did not get to see the finished product, having tragically passed away some months before the movie was released. You could not have turned in a better performance by Kurt Russell. Also notable in the cast is Noah Emmerich (The Americans) portraying Assistant Coach Craig Patrick. As the movie makes note of, the victory over the Soviet team was the semi-final game. The U.S. team victory for the gold was actually two days later against Finland. Again the U.S. team came from behind. And of course Herb Brooks famous quote that if they did not win the game 'they would take it to their graves.' Overall, just an amazing sports or human interest story in general. Magnificent production by all concerned from the cast, soundtrack, direction, cinematography, etc.

    I am super late to the party, but I worked with a guy who was an American tank commander in the Army in the conflict. We would talk sometimes and he would let a bit slip out of the total shit show that he saw. They would get jam/jelly packets in their MREs and he would see some guys eat the jam/jelly and then fill it full of M4 explosives. Yeah, you can blow it up like you see in the movies, but if you eat it, you die. The guys he saw would hand out the packets of M4 to kids and then laugh as they died. But then again, these types of people were often asked to go inspect something off to the side of the road and never returned. And no one questioned it. There would be fresh officers out of college and they would tell their troops to go from A to B in a straight line through the jungle. The Srgt (or highest ranking) would tell him why that was a bad idea and that they should S path around things. Officer would "out rank" his idea and make the troops go straight. The officer would never make it more than 100 yards into the field because he would get shot in the back of the head. The lack of compassion for the "enemy" and your own troops is something not many people talk about, and this was one time when the troops took it into their own hands. Anyway, just something lost in history that should stay alive and be told.

    A few players from this team would go pro, but the goaltender, Jim Craig, couldn't stay on an NHL roster for the long term, as he retired in 1984. Even though he did well as captain, Mike Eruzione opted not to continue playing after the games, even though he received a contract offer from the New York Rangers.

  • @bluebear1985
    @bluebear1985 วันที่ผ่านมา

    It was kind of a surprise when the Soviets pulled their top goaltender, Vladislav Tretiak, in the middle of this game. He had been the go to guy in net for them since the early 70s. In 1972, they played a special eight game Summit Series against the best Canadian players the NHL had to offer. Because of how it close it was, coming right down to a winning goal in the eighth game in Moscow, it certainly became a wake-up call for North American hockey.

    Unfortunately, Hollywood always has to dramatically change what actually happened in historical pieces. But, I guess thats what documentaries are for. For a little more accurate account of what really happened, regarding the Doc Holiday/Wyatt Earp relationship at the time of Docs death....it was completely fabricated in the movie. The truth is, Wyatt, Doc and others were traveling together and in Albuquerque Doc insulted Josephines family and called Wyatt a "Jew-boy." And they completely fell out and basically ended their friendship. There is 1 account of Wyatt and Doc having a short and final conversation a few months before Doc died. But it wasn't anything like the movie. Also, I'm sure its already been said 50 times, but Doc's spouse was a prostitute named "Big Nose Kate."

    I was a senior at Notre Dame when this happened; all of us watched the delayed broadcast. I had season tickets to ND hockey games and I got to see many of the Team USA players from U of Minnesota, U of Wisconsin and Minnesota-Duluth play against the Irish over the previous 2-3 seasons. The great ABC broadcaster Jim McKay summed it up later on when he said something along the lines of “ it’s like a group of College Football All-Stars beating the Pittsburgh Steelers; it’s that big an upset” (a few weeks earlier, the Steelers had won their 4th Super Bowl in 6 seasons).

    Olympic ice hockey wouldn't adopt a group stage/knockout format until the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville. The format here, was different. Without getting too far into the weeds, if Team USA had lost to Finland in the final game, there was a mathematical but very real possibility that they could have finished 4th, and beating the Soviets would have ended up as little more than a historical quirk.

      In the 1980 Winter Olympics, there were 12 hockey teams. Those 12 teams were evenly divided into two groups. Six teams were in the Blue Division, while the other six teams were in the Red Division. Whichever team you were, you had to play each of the other five teams in your group. In the standings: Each team was awarded 2 points for each win; 1 point for each tie; & 0 points for each loss. Afterwards, the top 2 teams from each group advanced to what was called the medal round. The Blue Division ended with the top 2 teams being Sweden as the winner & the United States as the runner-up. The result that they earned against each other (which was a tie) carried over into the medal round. The Red Division ended with the top 2 teams being the Soviet Union as the winner & Finland as the runner-up. The result they earned against each other (a Soviet Union victory against Finland) carried over into the medal round. In the medal round standings, each team received an additional 2 points for each win; 1 point for each tie; & 0 points for each loss. The medal round schedule was as follows: On Friday, it was the Soviet Union (the Red Division winner) vs. the United States (the Blue Division runner-up); followed by Sweden (the Blue Division winner) vs. Finland (the Red Division runner-up). On Sunday, it was the United States vs. Finland; followed by the Soviet Union vs. Sweden.

    Casablanca (1942). If you haven't seen it, you should.

    Oh man I LOVE you didn’t know what this movie was about. It makes the reveal in the bar scene so much fucking better! Btw a lot of people consider this to be Quentin Tarantino’s movie even though it’s directed by Rodriguez. It has a lot of the tropes that a QT movie has. 20:25-20:34 is pretty funny!

      Me too! The hard shift from crime thriller to vampire gorefest is sublime and right up my alley! Glad you had fun with me 😊

    Fun bit of trivia: Other than Jim Craig (Eddie Cahill) all of the actors that played team USA were hockey players. They figured it would be easier to teach hockey players how to act than to teach actors how to realistically play hockey.

      I love that! I’m no expert but I thought the actual play looked really good, and that explains why 😊

    The sign of how great this movie (and this moment) is: You are on the edge of your seat during the entire USSR game, even though you know how it is going to end.

      💯 exactly! The best movies can get you invested and hyped even when you know

    It’s cool you reacted to this. Clash of the Titans is not done really at all as a reaction and it makes me sad cause it’s a fantastic movie. If you enjoyed this I highly recommend Jason and the Argonauts. Still to this day the skeleton fight in that movie is insane and I still don’t understand how Ray Harryhausen did it. It’s that impressive!

      It was fun! I’m glad my viewers appreciate these lesser known films so I can do them! So thank you for checking it out 😊

    18:42, as a UK veteran, I would like to introduce you to a lot of the people that I had the misfortune to work with. They really were totally delusional and totally constipated, just like the lieutenant here is.
