In this video I explain what the major and minor Blues scales are and how to play them on the bass guitar.
Blues scales are essential for bass players to know as they are used all the time in styles of music such as Blues, Jazz, Rock, and Funk.
You can use Blues Scales for:
1. Constructing bass lines
2. Creating great sounding bass riffs
3. Bass fills and licks
You will find bass fretboard diagrams in the video lesson and you can download the free PDF with all the lesson information using the link at the top of this description.
This bass video tutorial is suitable for absolute beginner bass players through to intermediate bassists.

Thanks for the clear explanation of the difference between blues and pentatonic scales Greg. The diagrams make it easier to grasp as well. Can’t wait to experiment with them in our band songs.
It’s great that you have a band situation to try all these concepts out in Ruth.
You’ll definitely find the pentatonic and Blues scale shapes helpful for throwing in new ideas into your bass lines.
You explain things very well! from New York
Thanks Thomas, glad to help.
This is the first time I’ve heard anyone explaining the difference between major and minor blues scales. I was confused about that for a long time. Thanks.
Glad to help Mark. I think it’s an important area to get right for bass players.
Thanks for the video. I appreciate the simple and straight forward way you explain concepts for the bass.
Thanks Kenneth, glad the lesson is helping.
Excellent - thanks
Cheers Ian, glad you liked it.
Way Cool Brother Man
Cheers
Cheers Travis.
I have been working on "The Real Me" by the Who. The Ox appears to be playing a C minor pentatonic with an occasional blues note thrown in during some of his runs (I think - Lol). Still a work in progress for me and I am an old dog. It's proving to be a challenging but fun study.
There is nothing quite as satisfying as mastering The Real Me and playing along with the track. Keep going!
Constructive.,Concise and Clear. Thanks once again, Greg. 🙏
Thanks Michael, I try to make things crystal clear in the lessons.
@@GregsBassShed You succeed every time, Greg.
As my concentration isn't good, I have a couple of tunes l use to help me. Riders on The Storm and Soul Finger. Both very different but both with repetitive bass lines. What is your opinion on gaining concentration?
Hi Michael, if you haven't already tried it, I find structuring a practice session and getting rid of distractions can help a lot with concentration.
@@GregsBassShed Thanks Greg. I've been busy over the last few weeks, but I've found more time over the weekend to work on concentration, and of course practicing your last lesson on Tommy Shannon's bass.... Excellent lesson by the way.
@@Ghost_Vulgarian thanks Michael, that one is going down well with everyone so far!
My roommate thought I was watching a Russel Brand video!
I don’t look like him so it must be the voice! 😂 first time someone’s said that!
@Greg's Bass Shed Ya, he heard your video from the other room.
@@ryanh1378 tell your roommate that they have a good ear for accents. I didn’t know Russell but we grew up within about 10 miles of each other!
@@GregsBassShed Cheers from Canada!
Another brilliant video Greg. Sunshine of your love is one of my all time favourites. Will you be using your new JC bass in any new videos?
I’m definitely going to use the JC in future videos. Just recorded all the backing tracks for my new Jazz course on it and the bass sounds great!
Re: dominant 7th chords, what blues scale (major or minor) can be played over them?
Hi Robert, you can use both blues scales over a Dominant 7th chord. The minor Blues scale will bring out the Bluesy sound. Also don't forget to use the chord tones - root, major 3rd, 5th, b7.
