- Hi. My name is Marlin :) I'm a cat....raised by dogs. And I think I'm a dog. I live in the Outer Banks of North Carolina with my mom, Caroline Jarvis, and dad, Mack Hopkins....and they are about to get married! I have 4 dog siblings - Buxton, Hattie, Shady and Buoy. They've taught me everything I know. My favorite things are going to the beach to go swimming in the ocean, jumping on the boat to go fishing, eating fresh seafood, and swimming in the canal. I'm pretty much living the dream! Follow @carolinejarvis on instagram to follow my adventures!
Marlin looking at his reflection in the water bowl thinking: I see no family resemblance, I wonder if they were adopted?

Marlin (knowing she's a dog): "Why do I look like a cat?"
... not that the dogs do look alike / are the same breed...
Marlin is gorgeous & you will share such special memories. In 2006 I was on a motorcycle trip from L.A to Argentina. 1 month into the trip whilst in Mexico I came across a kitten exactly like Marlin. Given he was Mexican I called him Amigo & we travelled on the motorcycle for nearly 2 years sharing an incredible journey. I then brought him back with me to Australia. He passed away in 2019 & I was devastated but he was truly my best Amigo.
God bless you and Amigo ❤❤❤
soo sorry for your loss😿💔bless you for saving amigo💜
Sweet story.
Best memories 💜
Always in your heart. Amigo is always with you. Hold him there.
😻
When Marlin realizes he has claws and he can climb things, he is going to think he has super powers!
and with power ...comes great responsibility!
...let's face it, it's a cat ...it's gonna be a super asshole.
Nice one

These dogs are so respectful of Marlin's tiny size. Life is beautiful.
Agreed ❤😂😊
❤ perfect pussycat, don't you think?💞
They really are, such sweethearts being so gentle and cautious
The evolution to the environment of peace. Even animals can evolve, as long as basic needs are met.❤
They remember when they were once that size
The best part is that he doesn't get lost in the open areas, sticks around with his family. Cats are impossible to contain. They usually disappear, hang around and come back whenever they want. That's why Marlin is such a dog.
@Grutgger Schmidtz often from a distance
I ise a sports whistle to call my cats back indoors. Cerries a long way. Works great.
The thing with cats is they usually have much stronger predator instincts than a lot of dogs... If that cat is feeling spunky and he sees a baby rabbit hopping along or something good luck calling cute lil marlin back until that thing is dead in his adorable fanged mouth... "meow!! I got you a present mom.."
He always wants to be near the dogs and never missing a beat!!
Many aren't hard to contain at all. I had a cat growing up that followed us around the neighborhood. Our dog, Dakota, leading the way, and our cat, Tucker, tailing us from behind. And all the cats I've had since then will come when I call them. A lot of it is in how you treat them, and they all have different personalities too. Not all dogs wanna come when you call them if they'd rather stay outside or are distracted chasing things.
Something so spiritual when Marlin is loved by his dog buddies and humans. It makes
the world seem like such a good place. Even I feel safer.
Love is the answer
It is spritual! Imagine a world where all humans act like Marlin and his dog friends?
Awww, see? Cats and dogs can get along and cats can love water, they should make a live-action feature film adapation of Marlin's story related to The One and Only Ivan and Dolphin Tale duology.
"That day I looked into the water bowl and saw my reflection ... and I knew ... I was different."
💖 Marlin is sooo precious! 🥰
It is true, Marlin certainly was looking deeply into it wondering why she did not look like the others! lol
🎶When will my reflection show who I am inside? 🎶

OMG, can’t believe a tiny kitten swims like a fish in the lake? The bravest little one! Bravo.
That really did it for me. He really thinks he’s a dog. Cats hate water.
I love that, that tiny kitty loves to play with those big dogs and goes in the water. I'm so happy to see that dogs and cats can play and grow together. Bless you for loving these fur babies.
We have a rag doll house cat and a cavalier King Charles spaniel. Raised together from tiny. Both now aged 13 and are literally cat dog siblings. They adore each other, sleep curled up together and happily share a water bowl even though we set 2 separate ones out. They choose to drink from the same one and the dog bless his heart, if the cat is thirsty, he stands back and lets him drink first. It’s perfectly possible to raise them happy together with good supervision and is now a beautiful sight to see 13 years later. We know that whoever dies first, the remaining one will grieve for sure x
@@clare1971 yes I do believe animals have respect for elderly. They eat dry out of one dish& get there before my old 18 yr. gets there slowly, & then back off & let him eat, & wait till he leaves, is weird but true. Seemed to have a special friendship with Roxston, the brown shaggy-dog (poodle? ...idk dog breeds)
Beach chases, hide and seek under the bed. Rox was the only doggo to do the elbows-down, play bow, to invite Marlin to play :)
Exactly, everyone of them plays a particular role, the carer, the player, the parent and Marlin is having the best time ever!
It's the mothering instinct, it doesn't recognize differences in species. Humans could learn a lot from this.
YES ISNT IT SO CUTE I JUST LOVE THIS
@@CarriUSA Totally untrue. Not all cats hate water. I have four cats and while three of them dislike getting wet, one of them would live underwater if I would let him. His favorite thing to do is roll around in his water fountain, and given the chance, he loves jumping in the shower if the water isn't too hot.
*I adore the thoughtful nature of her dog siblings. Their gentle approach around her, ensuring not to step on or knock her over, is absolutely heartwarming and precious*

Funny I always thought I was a dog person and wanted a dog for the family as did my kids but my wife was not an animal person so we passed on it for years . Then Covid hit and my daughter surprised us and brought home a kitty from shelter and we kept her . Piper is now our cherished partner a little over a year old can’t imagine not having her !
So sweet 😇😇😇
I'm so glad you have discovered the joy of kittenhood... Have fun xx
My dogs name is Piper! Great name choice, her best friend is a Torbie kitten named Blaze!
How did your wife receive him/her to this day?
@@ebazileyes1475 she loves her but not as much as I do! My daughter is planning on getting her own residence in June and she will take the cat with her . I will miss piper but my wife says she won’t as much. My wife is really into maintaining a clean house and even though kitty is very clean my wife would rather not have her around. My wife loves her but can live without her.
I've raised 6 cats, many rescuers. Have never seen a cat that easy going with going in water, Amazing.
Good for you Christine. You are a special person. I have a feral colony here in Va, that I have been taking care of since 2009. We had a kitten just like Marlin, unfortunately he was too friendly. I should have taken him home. But I kept thinking, Ill get him tomorrow. I have a Tom named Smokey that didnt wait.. He jumped in my car one night, and that trifling thing has been my shadow since 2010. I wouldnt take a million dollars for him.
Lies again? Gold Cup Gain City Grab Cat
My cat hated the water and being in a car., this cat has no hangups.
Could be a Turkish van cat
I was sitting here thinking about other videos like this that I've seen and "Why don't my cats like to go swimming in the ocean or hiking or camping or any of that stuff?" And then I realized...why would they? I never do any of those things myself. 😆
awwwww! Yes that is exactly why Marlin loves all of it because he has always been around it and has used the dogs as leaders and loves to be part of the adventures and never miss a beat!
Cats don’t have a hierarchy, and they are, by nature, very good hunters, and pure carnivores. They make it on their own if they must. But he knows where it is safest to be, he is just a tiny kitten. Cats are not dogs. And they are not enemies.
This is a wonderful video, and I wouldn’t have dared to let my cat run around without a harness and band. Then again, we live close to a very trafficked road, and don’t have a dog to watch over him 😊
Exactly! My cats love chainsaw wood chips, being spun, being vacuumed, walking on a leash, riding bikes, and quads, while my sister's cats are traumatized by a stranger coming in the house!!! They hide in bizarre places, and stop using the litter box!!!
@scarletgoat173 damn bro.
no need to reply all the comment lol
@scarletgoat173 Funnily enough, just like Kellyburket's cats, my two cats *also* like being spun. They literally get in one of their baskets (and sometimes a spinning chair) and look up expectantly for it, and after getting spun around a couple of times (not too hard, of course), they look around a bit dizzily before looking back up, patiently waiting to go again, sometimes even meowing if it doesn't come. Apparently their parents also liked doing that, so I guess they sort of picked that up.
This is absolutely adorable!! Then there’s my lab who’s been raised with cats, thinks she’s a cat. She jumps up on the counter and eats the cat food, just like they do!
That's cute 😅
Debra Mason please put it on Utube
Cat food is not good for dogs
🤦🤣🤣🤣
I too had a dog who thought he was a cat. My cat groomed the dog when he was a pup. Dog arched his back and made a purring sound 🤣 when petted.
My favorite is when Marlin sees his reflection at the bottom of the water dish. He is probably thinking, "why do I look different than my brothers and sisters?"
Kittens always think their reflection is another cat, & usually jump on the reflection, like big dawgs, LOL. I thought that bowl might fly!
@@islgrl292 Yeah, most cats in general can't recognise themselves in the mirror.

What a star Marlin is. Wishing him a long, healthy and happy life.
Things I noticed: Cat's front paws (from the wrist to the claws) are super sensitive to touch. Marlin still has cat reactions such as the arched back as a defense and paw-slaps in offense. I don't think Marlin thinks he is a dog but, rather, he knows he is part of the pack. It is wonderful seeing your four-legged family. Thank you for loving them, Caroline.
You took this headline very serious I see 😂
Lmao all those cat things are instinct, so any cat no matter what raised them is going to have feline behaviors
@Kai Cuttlefin True, but when cats and dogs grow up together, they learn each other's "language", so there are fewer misunderstandings.
Marlin is bilingual, I'm so proud.
Dont let him see "Marlin halloween costumes." Randall "i dont think hes really an astronaut..cosmonaut perhaps."
This reminds me of my cat, Dog Run, who was a feral cat born in the dog run of our house. The dog run was there when we purchased the house, and we did not keep our two dogs there. A few years later a feral mother cat had a litter of five in the dog run, and they were protected because my dogs were kept out. I fed the mom; she was so thin. After a few weeks she took four the kittens and left one behind. We named him Dog Run, because that is where he was born. After the mom left him behind we brought him in the house. My two dogs licked him and adopted him. Because he was raised by two dogs, he acted like a dog. He would come when called, eat with them, sleep with them and loved to be around people. He lived for 18 years. After my two dogs passed on he became friends with any new dog I brought into the house. He was my only cat and I still miss him.
Pets teach us how to love and then they teach us how to let go. :(

Thank you for this video. I was having such a very stressful day, behind on the work I wanted to accomplish, and I almost didn't watch it because I didn't think I could spare the 13 minutes. But I stopped what I was doing and watched it anyway. Your video broke my mind away from the work that was overwhelming my brain, it calmed my mind which was clouded over by stress and made me laugh. I watched it twice, shared it with my wife and daughter, and now the problem that was stopping me dead in my tracks was easily solved after clearing away the stress blockage. I have 3 cats and 1 dog. Twice a day I take my dog for a rather long walk, and the 3 cats come with us every time. They have learned what times I walk the dog and get ready and wait for us to go. Even on rainy days (which tend to be shorter walks). Everyone laughs when they see the cats walking with my dog and I. It keeps me mindful of the joy that my 4 legged family members bring to my life. But none of my cats swim. They love to play in the rain, and love when I dry them off with a towel, but they don't swim. Marlin is truly an awesome cat.

What a cute cat. I’m a firm believer you should raise dogs and cats together. It makes both more gentle and understanding. I was never a cat person. I have two big dos (12 and 14 now). One day a little kitty made himself at home. He became my best friend, but bestest friends with my dogs. My dogs were always gentle, but became even more so after the kitty. I agree with fallen that the kitten should not have been forced to swim of which I assume is what happened as the placement of the kitten in the water was not shown in the video?
Kittens are clueless and it would be very rare for a domesticated feline to choose to swim, esp a tiny, hardly weaned kitten.
I hope marlin is not forced to be in a zillion of stressful situations. Just a thought. Marlin may enjoy the adventure?
Oh, no, the kitten didn't want to fit in. It was just learning from it siblings, thinking this is the right way. It's learning from her siblings, just like a child 11 yrs old or younger would learn from their parents / siblings / anything.

I love that you guys take Marlin along on the adventures, rather than leaving him at home, as most people do. He's a beauty. The puppies are wonderful with him, too!
I tried to bring my cat along on my adventures, he rather likes to stay at home in the environment he knows. Each cat is an individual, and most of them don't grow up with dogs, so they tend to have a rather sedentary lifestyle. Allow me to remind that cats co-evolved with humans taking advantage of the vast amount of rodents drawn by agriculture or wastes left by human activity. That's why they are not much of travellers and most of them like to stay around where they know food will be abundant, just look at a fishing pier to convince yourself, cats are everywhere ;)
Some years ago our farm cats,( not raised by dogs ) csme along with the dogs to move sheep, a flock of 2000+ takes alot of guiding along narrow scottish tracks, the dogs would range up and down either side and the cats fetch up the rear, in other situations actually ranging between the sheep and dogs. The sheep cats became famous locally because the school bus often got stuck behind us. The only problem when it starts to rain the cats abandon the job the dogs not.

I'm cultivating a relationship with a bee. I think she think she is some sort of cross between vertebrates and invertebrates. Yep, really.
It is so fascinating seeing her cat instincts of "eeew-water" fight her dog curiosity of "its-not-that-bad-really-and-it-looks-awesome"
it's so crazy cool that he likes water!
I second this. Some cats do like water, but not like this! I've seen a cat enjoy sitting in the sink and batting at the water from the tap though, or drinking it. Not really seen them deal well with a large body of water though, and certainly not with being out of their depth!
Yay!!
Cat don't have an ew water instinct, but cats just don't need water like dogs do so lots of cats just see it as something they don't need , cats get/should get their water from the food they eat(like dessert animals), dogs need water cause they pant and require water separately from their food for hydration ofc but also to regulate their body temperature.
Ps. As a Caribbean person who's seen cats that love playing in water

Most orange tabbies think they’re dogs. I had an orange tabby (stray who adopted me) who would hang out with me while I was gardening in the front yard. When people would go by, walking their dogs, I would stop to pet them, and Fluffy would go right up and butt the dogs with his head. Dogs would be “it’s a CAT!” And Fluffy would look around and say “where? No, not me! I’m a dog just like you guys.” Funny and special boy!

@@shenebraskan4945 I once lived in a neighborhood with stray cats everywhere. There was a neighbor who, I was told, would go camping, trap cats and bring them back home and release them to fend for themselves. No neutering or spay, not even a visit to the vets. One such cat had kittens in his back yard, and his three dogs killed them.
I had 2 rescue cats of my own. I was able to find homes for 17 of the strays. I kept the four least adoptable with me. My six “beasties,” as I called them, and I would go for walks after dinner. What a special cat, Marlin and his doggy friends and family 😍💖✨
He's a beautiful little kitten I wish you many many years of love with this beautiful little guy and your dogs too❤️👍
This baby does think he's a dog. No fear, loves his siblings and mom and dad. Lovely.
Not to mention that he comes when called.
Every single car that has taken me as their servant has answered to their names,
haha what do you mean - that cats are cowards, dont love their siblings and parents? :D what a narrowminded worldview to think as someone said
@@E-plunksna no one said that...

Marlin is adorable! He probably knows he’s different somehow, but he hasn’t figured it out. I love the way he stays within his family.
Unlike dogs, cats can’t easily understand anyone is different from them, or they’re different from anyone. Main reason why cats groom and give people hunted food is because they think of us as one who cannot fend for themselves. It’s quite funny.
That’s kinda true tho^^
Oh my goodness, your fur babies are absolutely wonderful ❤ Marlin is a one in a million cat, you’re all so blessed.
Thank you for the love you show your babies, it’s so tangible ❤❤❤
Marlin reminds me so much of my ol cat Charlie. I used to travel the entire western US with him, and we'd go to beech and take walks through downtown big cities. He'd ride on my shoulders in the truck, and he played 'who's the boss' with my golden retriever. He was part dog, part cat, and part human, and I still miss him to today.
awwwww, Charlie sounds like he was the best! I love the memories!
i had a cat/dog too and miss him to this day too! We were given a special gift from heaven for a little while!
What a wonderful memory..so glad you found these posts to remind you of your dear furbaby companion!!!❤❤❤
This is too sweet and funny , but he deserves a life jacket too!!….in swimming he could be sucked up by a large shark or fish, drown, then what?? Reds are so funny and are the best pets ever!! Their attitudes are so sweet….don’t lose him!!…he wants love and thinks the dogs are his parents!!….you will miss him terribly if he gets hurt!!

What I like is that cats can learn to behave like pack animals and they follow you all around. I lived on a huge farm and I walked around the property which is 2 miles. And my cats used to follow me for those 2 miles. They're amazing creatures.
We have neighbors that walk every evening around our small neighborhood. Their large orange cat walks with them every evening! It’s the cutest thing watching the 3 of them walk the loop.
i have 34 cats. 8 of them will follow me in single file down the street id I take a walk. When I turn around to go home, they all turn and walk with me. My neighbors always laugh. I look like the Pied Piper of cats
My Sister has a Cat and Dog and the Cat follows them about a car length behind loose while the dog is on a Leash. It's nice to see Cats being more accepted in Public.
Dogs spend way to much energy and I can see Marlin just saying "it's ok ,you go to the beach,I'll stay home" as he gets more independent.
Cats are sociable animals so no surprise here.
A kitten swimming and wading in the ocean... incredible.

He really is very speciall. He is a people pleaser. And an entertainer. These people are so blessed, and to live on the Outer Banks too!! Wonderful place.I spent many summers at Nags Head, thumbing back and forth, dancing at the Casino.(Late 60s)
I love orange kitties but black vats melt my heart. I only had one but my mom called her the love of my life. She was bold and strong then one day just disappeared. I think about her everyday. 😢I notice a lot of the neighborhood black cats have the same traits so I will find another in the future
What a beautiful story! nearly sixty years ago when I was 7 years old a neighbours cat died and left a litter of 4 week old kittens behind, we took one of them and luckily she was able to feed but our male German shepherd immediately took to her and carried her about by the scruff of the neck and she shared the dogs basket, they were the closest of friends and when Sheba (the cat) went hunting she'd bring back some of her catch for Oscar (the dog) and couldn't understand that he really wasn't into dead birds, rats or mice. they stayed close right till Oscars death when Sheba was 8 years old and it seemed to hit her harder than anyone, she bonded with our new dogs but never to the level of relationship she shared with Oscar.
😢
Don't be sad, he had a nice life.

I absolutely love this video. Especially how the one dog seems to love the kitty so much more than the other ones the way the baby plays with it. But I thought I was going to have a heart failure every time I saw that little kitten on the boat without a life jacket on. My heart was just a racing think of that cat just runs and jumps. This just proves you don't have to be the same color the same size or the same breed or species to become a family.
Us humans could learn a thing or two from these beauties ❤️
Don't be so worried. Cats swim VERY well; it's just that most of them hate to get wet. th-cam.com/video/VgnU-SMgf4M/w-d-xo.html You can even see Marlin in this video doing the paw shake to get the water off his feet. But no, he doesn't need a life vest. If he falls, they'll shut the motor off and fish him out of the water, like they would one of the dogs. th-cam.com/video/FzshsghJIE8/w-d-xo.html
Life jacket on a cat? Lmao. You think cats can't be pretty competent swimmers? The video literally started with him swimming very well.

Sunbathing on the dashboard of the car (8.25) was priceless. Great kitty.
Growing up, my big sister/guardian/best friend was a German Shepherd named Annie. She adored kids and played with everyone in the neighborhood, not to mention mothered them and kept them safe too. She truly thought she was a human kid until one day when she saw herself in the mirror. She was so heartbroken and depressed the rest of the day.
Aw but she better than a human ❤️❤️

The cat acted a tiny bit like a dog in the start, then started to realize he was a cat pretty early on, especially with the playing style, and the way he acts 😅 Seems more like he understands he’s a cat, but still see the dogs as siblings! It’s really cute!
Well, he did spend some time staring at his reflection in the dish. I think it clicked then that he's a cat.
I noticed that too! the kittens feline behavior coming out a lot more as he grew up .. cool to watch the stages . My cats loved their big doggie brother ❤️ cute video
I used to have a cat that would play fetch when he was little. He eventually grew out of it and became more cat like. Maybe cats are just more dog like when they're younger because feral cats tend to stick around their mother and siblings and thus have a bit of a social life before going out on their own and becoming more solitary creatures.
@@TheJadeFist Yes, I agree. Cats can be rather social and sometimes inhabit same space in loose groups, but as adults they hunt separately and maintain their own territorial borders (which may overlap with other cats).
But as kittens they tend to copy their mothers more so may pick up some unusual behaviors that they may or may not carry into adulthood.
They can adapt to their surroundings, including having humans, dogs or other animals around, but as anyone who cared for a cat knows, they can and will make people adapt to *their* preferences just as well.
Cat mothers may adopt kittens if they had their own around the same time, which people use to foster kittens that somehow lost their mother even if they are of different species (sand cat, leopard cat, and even bobcat kittens may be and were briefly fostered that way). So this may explain why there is a bit of a leeway in both mother and kitten behavior which makes things like this possible somewhat. But as cat grows up its instincts tend to mostly take over.
(If interested, here is a couple of videos I watched semi-recently about Pallas cat's (manul) kittens: 2e-2Z9fM9MQ, and this is about Amur leopard kittens - PPN4i9aqSlo .Both are in Russian, but the visuals should be enough)
It doesn't realise it's a cat or a dog it just goes with it's instinct, we make these labels and classifications. They don't.
I would be totally in love with Marlin in seconds. I am in love with him. What a wonderful example of how cats are adaptable, brave, loving and intelligent. Thank you. It's so uplifting.
My favorite is when Marlin is asleep on the dashboard in the sun while y’all are driving down the road. Such a special relationship they all have. It’s just love. I wish humans were like that.
