If not, I think you’re watching way too many “everything is too political” content farm channels, because the TF2 comics are probably the last thing I would ever expect to get seriously political, yet somehow it was what you thought of first when hearing about a new tf2 comic.
the 'were so back' is just copium. It's a 17 year old game, abandoned for almost half its existence. It's clear this is a community project, with original writers coming along to emulate official content, which to be fair is practically the same thing in my eyes. I'm glad to see it, absolutely, but this game is by no means a new toy. If you have been around as long as I have, you'll realize it's all a fucking daze. We get scraps, get overjoyed, expect more, and are left blue balled for half a decade before we get even less than before. I do think there is some potential for valve to pay attention to tf2, especially considering what they have done for Half-Life for its 20th anniversary. TF2 MIGHT get ONE LAST balance change update in 2027. I'd give it a 10% chance considering half life is far more important to valve, considering they would not have gotten this far without it. Would not have gotten the capital to build steam into the monolith it is. Valve could have lived without TF2, but not Half Life.

Someone remember that one leak we had about the last chapter of the comic? where everyone dies in a explosion, and the comic ends with two cave men, one in red, and other in blue fighting one another? Of course this leak was never confirmed, but seeing this first pannel with those 10 skelletons almost made me think this old leak was real.
perhaps it was a true leak that considered at some point but was later discarded, writers do tend to make many versions and rewrites of a story until they find something that works.

It seems pretty unlikely Jay Pinkerton would just casually show off an important part of the comic such as everyone being dead through email, so my guess is that this part of the script is just supposed to be a visual gag. I reckon this scene is going to start with this shot to make you *think* it's Miss Pauling and the mercs, only to have the shot fired at the vultures be from her or one of the mercs, revealing they're actually alive. Honestly, it might even be an intentional jab at how long the comic's been taking to release. The whole "Six years later" thing is interesting though.
Another reason why the skeletons can't be the mercs is because when scout is revived by God, he states a very specific date for when scout will die again, the one in question being nowhere near as close to the date these skeletons are shown in. And your kind of expected to believe the date God states scout will die because, well, he's God. But, hey. That's just a theory, a TF2 THEORY
I should mention that if that were in fact the tf2 crew being dead on the ground, it would contradict scout’s proper death, as he was supposed to die in 1985, not 1978.
