I'm a monitor tech, we only have 32 max to watch, work 12 hour shifts so last 4 hours are time and a half. When they are short, they offer 200, to 300 dollar bonus to work your day off, and obviously working the extra shift is all time and a half! . I'm making 29 dollars an hour. I made 68.000 dollars this year. 60 patients is absolutely ridiculous, and employee abuse. Yes WE'RE UNION! You're very sweet, and did a good job explaining what we do.😮

lol yeah they make us watch any where from 30-55max it’s insane, and expected to not miss anything and document everything to the hour/min/second.
I came across this video about a month ago and it inspired me to apply to a Cardiac Telemetry position with a local hospital. It took several weeks to get through their prerequisites, but I did it! So after weeks of studying, and passing a boat-load of exams, followed by weeks of shadowing the experts, I am in the "Drivers Seat" as of today - thanks!

I’m in the process of getting my ECG Certification. I’m almost done. This is a nerve wrecking thing to think about being in charge of, but your video calmed me down a bit. You answered a lot of questions I had and questions I didn’t even think of! I have my clinicals next week ! Thank you for this video
So how's it going?
Watching 60 patients is a bit much. There should be a limitation on how many patients one can watch at one time. Currently I've watched as many as 50 patients and felt that was way too many to watch safely
Thanks for the review, I just applied to a monitor tech position. I agree, interpreting all kinds of rhythms is not easy. $11-12/hr starting pay is truly abysmal, considering that even a job at best buy with 0 responsibility pays more.

That is very low, I’m sorry that you had to go through a job that should pay you more for the things you go through. I have family members work as cardiac monitor tech and idk if it’s because of the location they live, they got paid $35/hr.

@@zacharyshort384 well my cousin and I started 2017 so it’s been about 5 going to 6 years, it took him 2 years to get 32 and now he’s 35. I use to work at hospital get paid 38. Born n raise in SF. but again the cost of living always is going to take part of pay, but for the work we do as cardiac monitor techs it should be more than $11/12
Yes, with the cost of living what you are getting paid is equivalent to the $11-$15 that other ppl are getting paid in their city/state. So you’re still underpaid.

I had this job in South Carolina. We had up to 180 patients and it was always 6 of us in the room "The War Room"
We had to chart 5 different floors.
During the time I was a Monitor Tech my mom was sick with Congestive Heart Failure. She was my patient when she passed away. I'm just blessed and thankful to be able to spend as much time with her, including at work ❤
Easy job, but could get frustrating

I agree about doing multiple things. I had to be MT and UC the first couple years and I just had to tell them. “I’m either going to be the Tech or the Sec but I’m not doing both. You decide which one is more important. “ I then became solely the MT.

Do ypu need a hsd? Like I know tpu can necome a cna without one so what other certificates are there
@@stephaniesanchez2057 you don't need a degree for this position. If you work as a tech, you can usually take a class if your hospital offers it. Otherwise, you must have a background working with cardiac rhythms. Some people have paramedic experience or an actual Monitor tech certificate. Just search on Google and look for one in your area.

So I’ve decided to change it up and do Ekg and phlebotomy instead of just ekg. I start October 5th and really excited. I’m now looking into the MA program as well.
That's really good!! I knew you mentioned doing EKG in a previous comment. I think the more you do, the more options you will have for work. So, you are on a good path ❤️
KayThePA yes I did, Great memory! Thank you for the support. I was surfing the internet for ekg classes and don’t even know how I wound up on the vocational training school website. I had already enrolled at the local community college. Someone must’ve been looking down on me that day because I found the dual class of ekg/phlebotomy for less than I had paid for the ekg course.
I wound up spending more money since I have to wear uniforms & specific shoes to class. Totally worth it tho since I’ll have them forever. I started wearing the shoes immediately at my current job they were so comfortable.
Great video! Very helpful as far as the descriptions of job expectations and pitfalls! I’m also an older woman who is thinking of being a monitor tech. My DIL is a nurse locally and they need help in that field. She keeps encouraging me to try it. I’m terrified too! Lol. @14:18 u mention about calling the nurses no matter how many times that is true but I wanted to add on to wat u said i work in a hospital and the hospital i work in if the nurses doesn't pick up on that 3rd ring me as a tele is allowed to call a code blue, but no matter how many times u call that nurse write it in ur call log to save urself and if you dont have a call log keep a personal one so that cant blame you for anything. We have a call log and every time I have to call a nurse it goes into our call log book. Just wanted to put that out there
Yes, you are so right!!! Documentation is key in medicine! Our hospital don't call a code after a certain amount of times, but I know a few that do. I think it's a great idea. People are quicker to put patients on in those situations.

@@KayThePA by the way ur presentation was on point I too work at nites and for me it's hard to stay woke I dont think I will ever get use to staying woke witout feeling sleepy. I always have to get up and go stretch or on my break i take a half hr nap. They do allow us to play music. I never knew about tele a gurl friend of mine filled out an app for me online and put monitor tech down I actually went for PCA b/c I been a CNA for like 10 yrs and they basically the samething I got both interviews and I had to keep calling for the PCA position but they called me for the monitor tech and this is at the same hospital I work at. I got the job and went through the course after I was finish I still didn fully understand it. I know I serve a good God b/c they dont usually give u extra time in wat I needed. I still have a little trouble wit somethings but I came a longggggggg way. I started in March of this yr. And I love it.

@@GrabAHoldOfTheMind thank you ❤️ I use to feel sleepy back then, but lately I think my body is just use to being up because I don't feel like that anymore. Monitor tech can be less stressful than the floor sometimes. Do you work with another person in the room or is it you by yourself?

Although I've been in the healthcare industry over 20+years (in HIM), how likely do you think I can get a job, just based off my online education and certification (and 20 years in healthcare)? Hi, I think as long as you are certified, you should go for it. You never know. Not many people are qualified to do this job, so if a company really needs a monitor tech and you pass their tele test that they have all new hires take, you may get the job. I always say, just give it a shot, apply everywhere, and see what happens.

My hospital doesn't require certification, we had a 4 hour class and had to take a test. I passed the test but it is a bit scary.
There is way too much to learn in 4hrs. The Hospital that I retired from gave the class it was 3 days a week for 6 weeks. 99% of the students passed. It was very informative yet fast paced, but we had an awesome instructor that was an ICU nurse manager
4 hours like what!? lol def had to take a 4 week course how can they fit all that information in 4 hours

In southern California they pay from 16 to 20 dollars an hr

In this world, it's really about getting your foot in the door and then you get more opportunities. It sucks, but I don't think that will ever change. It's who you know, not what you know.
I don't know what state your in but EKG techs are in demand in Texas. I just finished the course as a summer class at the jr college. Most hospitals start you at 36k
Wow, that's really good. That's more than floor techs at most places!! Some states pay more than others based on the demand.

Hello! I think you should finish your course and apply everywhere. I think when employers are desperate, they'll hire new people. You just have to be able to pass their EKG test. I've seen people get hired with not that much experience.
Hi Kay, I really enjoy your videos. I am looking for a second career at 65. Just wondering if you think that is to old to start out as a EKG Tech. I am a former EMT (1980's), several CPR classes and taught CPR in the Navy.. Just wanted your opinion...Thanks a lot!

Thank you 🙃 Wow, that's an impressive resume. And noooo, you're definitely not too old. This would be a great low stress job for a second career at 65. I would recommend this more than working on the floor as a tech, which can be physically demanding. As long as you know your rhythms and pay attention, you're good to go 👍

Thank you ❤️ take baby steps until you accomplish your goals. You can consider this or becoming a patient care tech. PCTs work directly with the nurse, so you can see what they do.
Just finished my ekg/ telemetry class and got my certification but im afraid of applying for monitor tech jobs as im not completely secure of identifying all rhythms, as of now im only applying for ekg tech positions.. is there anything you would say i can do to get better in identifying these rhythms, thank you very much
Bbygriz yayyy! Congrats!! I think watching videos online help. I put a few in the description box. I think you should try and find a job ASAP. If you don't use what you learned, it's really easy to forget. They will train you on the job. It comes with practice :)

I did my EKG certification but haven't really been able to get a job doing it yet because of the pay. I currently do work at hospital in a clerical position that pays way more so its not very smart to make the switch if I am going to make way less. I think the pay should be way more given you have people's lives in your hands. I do get scared of doing EKG tech because of the huge responsibility.
The pay should be more, and I think it just takes practice to get comfortable. It’s not so bad, but scary at first.
The pay really does suck and it's so hard on the body. My. Wrist hurts and I think I'm getting carpal tunnel from being at a desk all day

Hi. I've watched your video, that's really helpful. I'm about to take my national exam to become a certified EKG tech. I'd like to ask you if you have any resources that you can refer to me about HIPAA's. I was taking a practice test and I realized most of the test concerns safety. Do you have any suggestions?
HIPAA is based on patient confidentiality and protecting patient information. So all it means it's that you don't share your patient's information with anyone other than those who are allowed to see it.
Are we calculating QTc ? Is a-fib really common? Do we need to interpret bundle blocks and or find localizations of ischemia??
You measure p, qrs, and QT intervals. Yes, A-Fib is common and really easy to spot. We interpret the BBB, but not localizations of ischemia.

I’m starting a job as an EKG/Monitor technician this summer. I’m super be out because I got my certification when I was 16 and feel a bit rusty now that I’ll be starting at 18 with not experience except that I’m a CNA. Do you know what the on job training is like for this position? (:
For me, it was good. They walk you through what to do. They won't let you do it until you know what you're doing. It's never wracking, but the more you do it, the more it will come to you. You can actually watch a few videos I have on here and practice with the links in those videos.

Is telemetry technician and ekg technician the same thing? And how do I find schools it’s hard to find these information even looking at google
Many times, you can get on the job training as a monitor/tele tech. Tele techs monitor patients' and report their findings to the nurse. As far as EKG tech, you are working with Holter monitoring/pacemakers, and stress testing. They usually work in doctors' offices, clinics... I have never met one in the hospital setting- not saying they don't work in that setting at all. Are you already working as a PCT?

they are more on their feet. you get paged back and forth to do ekgs on patients. When there’s code stroke etc, you need to go with the stroke team
could you possibly graduate as a cardiovascular tech, yet work as an ultrasound tech? or since its specific to the heart would you be only towards that section.
Honestly, I'm not too sure about the requirements for ultrasound tech.

So I decided to get a jumpstart on my EKG class this fall and start studying now. I recently spoke with a nurse who said that all the nurses and care techs do EKG’s in the hospital.
I don’t want to be a nurse or a patient care tech.
Any advice?
You can become a monitor tech. You don't have to become a PCT or a nurse.

Are the lead wires also labeled - RL RA LL LA V1 V2 V3 V4 V5 V6. Just wondering because in school ours have both.

It really takes practice. You'll get it eventually.
Wow, I assumed EKG techs made more than that. My local arts and craft store pays more than that.
I have almost no medical working experience but I’m really interested in a career change toward medicine since there are so many job opportunities. What exactly is your current position and what was your path towards that? What are you aiming for and what tips would you have for someone trying to get started in the medical field? Hi! My current job is a float patient support tech. So, I work in different areas of the hospital (ER, Monitor tech, med/surg, mom/baby, staffing coordinator, etc.). These positions allow me to get the patient care experience I need for my ultimate goal of becoming a PA. I think it's a great entry level position. You get to learn a lot before deciding if you want to become a nurse, PA, doctor, respiratory therapist, etc. It's a great start. Also, I'll be doing a video on unlicensed entry level positions to get you into the hospital setting.

Im almost done with my certificate for EKG technician but I hardly know the rhythms, when you start working at a hospital when you go to print the strip does it have what type of rhythm it is or you actually have to interrupt them?
You have to interpret them. When you measure them, it tells you the numbers only on the printout, and based on that, you have to make your own interpretations. Initially, it is challenging, but with practice, you will know them easily over time.
When you first get the job about how long is the training?
@@valerieperez4376 It's about 3 or 4 days. Not a long training at all. You will catch on though. It just sounds scary because you haven't had experience yet.

@@valerieperez4376 it's natural to feel that way. In a few months, all that will go away and you'll wonder why you were even nervous in the first place.

I've looked at the pay in Texas and the hourly rate for entry level is $17-$20 an hour. Is that typically or is it bs?

Does being a monitor tech count as patient care experience for PA school?
Honestly, I'm really not sure. You may want to ask the schools you are planning on applying to since it is not hands on.

Houston, TX....many are at 20hr.....but I heard stories that this career can reach beyond 60k....I don't know if its true....has to be location differences.

Definitely!! It's a good job and you're learning a new skill. Plus, you can work part-time time and get tuition reimbursement.
No not yet ekg tech is 450 hrs and phlebotomy is... I don’t remember... he is in 11th grade
Is a monitor tech the same thing as a ekg tech ?
not really, but they are similar. monitor techs work in a monitor room and monitor heart rhythms. EKG techs can work with monitoring devices, do EKGs, and other monitoring duties.

Not sure how I feel about the whole insider job. If I’m gonna go to school I need to know I’m getting a job
I feel you on that! That's how it works in many fields because it's easier to train people you already know, but when you're on the inside it's nice to have opportunities to cross train. I think there are always opportunities for newbies, you just have to be persistent.
If they train you in house they can pay you far less. The best advice i could give anyone is just go for your RN & skip the other traps. Nurses get real $ for their work & it's almost limitless what you can do with a nursing degree. Wish I had skipped all the tech & certificate programs & got my RN.I'm still paying student loans for my MA school & it's almost worthless because i couldn't get certified as an MA because the lame tech college i went to 15 years ago wasn't accredited & i had no clue🙄 so, I'm in crippling debt with little to show for it than dismal pay lol
As serious as this job is and as much knowledge as it takes it makes no sense how little the pay. Transporters move patients all from one place to the other which required no learning or test and get paid more
I know u posted this video years ago so u mean to tell me that RNs didn’t learn this in school??? This is very surprising being that they have degrees in the medical field.. Anywho thanks so much for uploading this video it was very helpful to get an idea on how things operate in this field.. I landed here because im interested in doing monitor tech but im so scared… The hospital here in my hometown is offering a 3 week training along with shadowing ppl who are working as monitor techs.. At the end of training there will be a test if passed their offering this position full time.. im just scared because 3 weeks is not a long time to learn everything u need to know & ppls lives are in ur hands…

Is there a difference between EKG tech and monitor tech?
Yes, EKG techs do more in dept stuff. Most people that I know are monitor techs though. You can get trained to do that at your job. For EKG tech, you have to go to get certified.

Yes, but it's not as bad as it sounds. You get use to it.
When they say to interpret the rhythm do they mean do the 5step approach?
It means to basically put what you think the rhythm is. For example, if the heart rate is less than 60 and everything else looks normal, I would most likely interpret the rhythm as "bradycardia."
Okay so are the nurse is expecting you to know exactly what rhythm it is or just as best of a guess as you can give them?

What career do you want to get into in the long run?
Not sure yet my son is taking ekg and phlebotomy in high school... he probably will either go with physicians or occupational therapy assistant... or diagnostic sonography ... but... if he did not go to college right away what can he do to get a job with the ekg and phlebotomy... does cna or emt make the most basic sense to get a job in a hospital
Also if he already has ekg and phlebotomy does he have to take a 600 hr pct class or just 165 with a cna class
@@ccl7118 Is he enrolled in a PCT course, where they teach him phlebotomy and EKG also? I know sometimes they have that option and all you have to do after completing the course is get your certification.

Hello! Yes, I think if you study really hard you can learn it in a week. You may not know every single thing, but you will know the foundation and learn more as you go. The only thing is, you have to start applying it right away or you will forget it.

@@joeltorres518 it's not really a career path. You can do something similar called "Holster Monitor Tech." It's basically the same thing where you analyze cardiac rhythms, but you need experience to get that kind of job. They pay more too. You can also use the MT job to get the experience and continue to do other careers in medicine (PA, nurse, doctor, etc.). It'll just be good to know the information for those careers.
I see a lot of abnormalities but how do you recognize all the strip accurately?
I think it comes with practice. You'll get use to it.

@@KayThePA I don't know what the cost of living is like in Florida but here in Los Angeles its pretty high. A union job EKG Tech here can make in the 20s. But of course it's expensive here so... it evens out.
